AJJ: November 6, 2016 Warsaw BK

“You’re an irreplaceable human soul with your own understanding of what it means to suffer” sings Sean Bonnette in AJJ’s “People II 2: Still Peoplin'”. The band formerly known as Andrew Jackson Jihad has spent its decade-long career writing songs about the myriad of issues involving depression, anxiety and bi-polar disorders. This year AJJ released its sixth full-length album The Bible 2 and the record offers a breakthrough of sorts — not in a traditional music industry sense — but rather a true explication of a path beyond a life dictated by the limitations of mental illness. The linked tracks “No More Shame, No More Fear, No More Dread” and “Small Red Boy” plot a path to wellness through self-determination. While the message may not work for everyone, the concept that we are in control of our own destinies — even if only a little bit — is inspiring and hopeful. AJJ has often used dark humor to offset the troubles of the characters in their songs, but the protagonist in songs like “People II: The Reckoning” lives in a spiral of “manic depression” that “comes and goes”. The Bible 2 offers a character who swears off doubt, resentment, fear, and fixations, and ultimately controls the inner devil “Red Boy” through power, truth and nurture.

AJJ are currently on tour in support of the new album and arrived in Brooklyn last Sunday for a show at Warsaw. This is the band’s third performance at this venue, after the date last year that we recorded at Knitting Factory. From the outset, the energy was palpable — this is a band with a tremendous relationship with its fans. There was two times during the night when AJJ had to ask the crowd to move back to prevent crushing the people up front. The set was culled from a strong representation of the band’s best material and included most of The Bible 2. In the end, it was clear that this is a band at the top if its game and offering a message that is both welcome and necessary for all of its fans.

I recorded this set by using the hypercardioid Neumanns from the front of the soundboard in this large venue. The excellent board feed was provided by the band’s superb touring FOH Stripes and the mix resulted in a recording of which we are extremely pleased. Enjoy!

Joan of Arc: October 7, 2016 Knitting Factory

October 31, 2016

img_0193

The last time we recorded Joan of Arc, I noted that they could be a bit of an acquired taste; that they are a band that rewards listeners who want to be challenged, not who show up for something typical. At this Knitting Factory performance, their first in New York in quite some time, they doubled down on that statement, as they played a set of songs that was alternately fascinating and head-scratching, but consistently expectation-defying. The current band includes Tim Kinsella on guitar and vocals, regulars Bobby Burg and Theo Katsaounis on bass and drums, Jeremy Boyle and the artist Melina Ausikaitis, who performed both an a cappella number mid-set and joined Kinsella on vocals at points in addition to playing some custom instruments.

This set was meant to showcase the band’s forthcoming album, He’s Got the Whole This Land Is Your Land In His Hands, which you can pre-order here, and which is of a piece with the band’s general perspective. The record contains a heavier emphasis on electronic instruments than one might expect from a member of the legendary Cap’n Jazz and the much-vaunted (or maligned, depending on your perspective) “emo” scene, which was a term that never really meant much of anything, but means even less when considered in light of this band. Songs like “This Must Be the Placenta” (the album’s first single) and “Stranged That Egg Yolk” are sure to stretch boundaries for some fans, and if their reception tonight was to be believed, Joan of Arc’s fans are ready for them. Things got weirder after we hit the halfway point, with Ausikaitis’ pseudo-Appalachian a cappella number followed by “The Hands” from the band’s first album, which then led into a lengthy aside by Kinsella about seeing the Misfits in a hockey arena, followed by two mostly-instrumental songs that I found to be the most compelling in the set (if these have names, please help me out), which made up a combined twenty minutes of the just-over-an-hour total.

In total, then, this show felt reminiscent of that show back in 2011: depending on one’s perspective, some things may have “worked” better than others, but you have to applaud the whole of it for its willingness to take risks, to let things go to uncomfortable places. Based on the preview tracks floating around on the Internet, the new album should be a more than worthy entry into the band’s canon, and represent some of the best of those experiments. Nearly twenty years after their first album was released, Joan of Arc know who they want to reach and how they want to reach them, and that has continued to make their story one worth following.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK4V microphones next to the soundboard with a feed from house engineer Rob. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Luna: October 1, 2016 – Rough Trade

With their reunion currently in its third year, I think its safe to assume that Luna is back. The band has been doing these brief and intermittent tours since 2014, and the current one (four dates) completed with two nights at Rough Trade in Brooklyn. The first night was a standard mixed set and the second night included a complete performance of the Penthouse album.

The Saturday show began in earnest with 23 Minutes in Brussels, a lengthy song with a propelled instrumental segment that usually works as a show-stopping number. From the outset it was clear that this was going to be no ordinary night. There was classic numbers, obscure tracks, a song from Britta Philips‘ new solo album Luck or Magic, and ultimately two callbacks for encores. But what was most striking about this show was the band’s positive energy, tight arrangements and relative feeling of being at ease. They’re comfortable being Luna and that is a very good thing that bodes well for more tours and for our presence at local (and some distant) shows.

I recorded this set with the Schoeps cards mounted inside of the soundboard booth and mixed with Evan’s superb feed. The sound quality is pretty much ideal. Enjoy!

Big Ups: September 13, 2016 Baby’s All Right

Big Ups

Big Ups are a band that I keep coming back to, not only because they’re the current standard-bearers of American post-hardcore but also because they’re a vital part of the NYC/Brooklyn music scene. We’ve seen them on bills with legacy acts before, but sharing a bill with Girls Against Boys is perhaps the most appropriate of all for Big Ups, who reference the eighties and nineties DC/Dischord scene that birthed GVSB. Big Ups are a couple decades removed from that era but they’re keeping the spirit alive with their tight craft. Their latest album is Before a Million Universes on Exploding in Sound—one of best labels out there for great young bands; and whether you’re a veteran of the nineties or a younger listener, it’s more than worth your twelve bucks to grab a copy of that limited vinyl.

Acidjack and I recorded this set from the stage lip combined with a board feed and it’s pretty outstanding. You know what to do!

Girls Against Boys: September 13, 2016 Baby’s All Right

Girls Against Boys

Twenty years ago, in 1996, I turned fifteen. Girls Against Boys were touring their third Touch & Go record, House of GVSB, and were scheduled to play Tramps a little less than a month after my birthday. I somehow scraped together $45, scammed a ride to (Nobody Beats) The Wiz, and bought a simple Aiwa walkman with a record function and a clip-on mono microphone, all in order to document my favorite band.

If you were born anytime after House of GVSB was released, you might not have heard of Tramps or The Wiz; Touch & Go has mostly folded; and it’s possible you’ve never held a walkman. But fortunately, in a limited capacity, Girls Against Boys persist. While the band certainly doesn’t play as much as they used to, we got a tour in 2013 (with David Yow contributing some vocals) and even some new music: The Ghost List sounds incredibly vital for any band, much less one that hadn’t released new music in eleven years. In 2014, three-fourths of GVSB reactivated their 80’s Dischord band Soulside and played a couple gigs at Saint Vitus in support of their reissued final album, Trigger. Lucky DC-ers even got a brief New Wet Kojak gig at the Black Cat. Soulside played some more shows last fall in Philadelphia, Chicago, Los Angeles, and San Francisco.

But back to Girls Against Boys: Last Tuesday the band played their first show since that 2013 tour, a warmup gig in anticipation of their appearance at Riot Fest Chicago. The set starts off with one from 2002’s Jade Tree LP, You Can’t Fight What You Can’t See; but aside from “Basstation” and “Let’s Get Killed” (off The Ghost List), it’s a lengthy tour of the band’s 90’s Touch & Go output, featuring their most well-known material from Venus Luxure No. 1 Baby, Cruise Yourself, and House of GVSB. For the hardcore fans, there’s the deep cut “Distracted” which appeared on the “Disco Six Six Six” single, and was rarely outed back in the day. The crowd packed into Baby’s small, sweaty, and still partially under construction room for what was to be one of the longer GVSB shows I’ve ever seen. The band were even called back for a second encore of “Rockets Are Red” after the house music had gone on, surely a rare occurrence these days. Aside from some rusty bits here and there and some jokes about their age, I’d swear we were transported back to that ’96 tour.

Girls Against Boys have another festival appearance scheduled at the Sound on Sound Festival in Austin, November 5th. I have it on good authority there are plans for another Brooklyn warmup gig beforehand, so keep on a lookout for that.

Update: GVSB will be playing Saint Vitus on November 3rd with the always great SAVAK. Tickets available here.

I recorded this set—with a massive assist from Acidjack who manned the deck while I rocked out—with a pair of mics on stage combined with a board feed from Baby’s FOH, Devin. It slays.

Matt Valentine: August 14, 2016 Union Pool

Matt Valentine

Any Matt Valentine or MV/EE tour poster will tell you that tapers are welcome; and we’ve never been shy about taking him up on the invitation. We caught up with Valentine earlier this year for his solo release Midden Mound. And now a few months later, we returned to Valentine’s space homestead for this Sunday night space folk set highlighting his new record, Blazing Grace. As usual, you’ll find Valentine’s signature blend of noisy folk songs and trippy jams here. Meanwhile, Valentine wrapped up his tour last night, but he’ll no doubt be hitting that golden road again soon so keep an eye out for next time—we’ll see you in the taper’s pit.

I recorded this set from our usual location at the venue combined with a board feed from Union Pool FOH, Doug. The results are excellent. Enjoy!

Dinosaur Jr.: August 5, 2016 Rough Trade NYC

August 9, 2016
By

IMG_1084

Any story about Dinosaur Jr. in New York really must start with the shows that didn’t appear on this site — the band’s singular string of seven shows at Bowery Ballroom back in December of 2015 (they’re going to be officially released in some form). There, the band celebrated the thirtieth anniversary of their debut album — an extraordinary feat for almost any act, even more of one for a band who some would argue didn’t hit their commercial potential even during the heyday of their style of music. Joined by an all-star roster of guests every night, J. Mascis, Lou Barlow, and Murph proved how much they’ve meant, and continued to mean, to the music that’s been made during their run. That old saw about being defined by the company you keep? There’s a reason for it.

Which brings us to this much more intimate show at Rough Trade NYC, on the heels of the band’s latest tour with fellow late 80s/90s stalwarts Jane’s Addiction. These homecoming nights are always fun, giving a band a chance to unwind in front of friends after a touring slog. The band rewarded us with some first-time playings of their just-released new record, Give A Glimpse of What Yer Not, which could as easily be the mantra of a band whose consistency and quality has been remarkable through lineup changes and a hiatus. If their first shot at “Goin’ Down” was a little rough (in Barlow’s opinion, anyway), the crowd wasn’t bugged by it, as the band showed off the new album tracks alongside many of their best-loved favorites, including their biggest commercial hit, “Feel the Pain.” Of course, the diehards were there for the older classics like “Freak Scene,” “Gargoyle” and “The Lung,” as well as my personal favorite, the night’s closer of “Out There.” If it wasn’t a two-plus hour bonanza of rare tracks and guest stars, this show was closer to what any band really wants to be about — enduring classics played to enduring fans, in a set that proves that their new material is just as vital as the old. After some much-needed rest, I’m sure we’ll see them back at it to tour the new record in full. We’ll be there.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK5 cardiod microphones in our usual spot in the venue with an Aeta PSP3 preamp for extra clarity. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Thanks to Dinosaur Jr.’s management team and the Rough Trade staff for helping to make this happen.

SAVAK

Local favorites SAVAK just released their excellent first LP, Best of Luck in Future Endeavors. We had seen a preview back in January and thankfully Unblinking Ear brought them back to Union Pool for their Northside showcase. This afternoon set literally picks up where the album leaves off with a few new songs like “They Are Bones,” “I Don’t Want To Be Defended,” “Loma Prieta,” and “Sick of War.” Like in January, Greg Vegas joins in on saxophone for a few numbers and I’m honestly surprised we didn’t hear cries of “more saxophone!” from the crowd. No further dates currently scheduled for SAVAK, but I’m sure we’ll likely see them again soon promoting this record that will justifiably end up on some 2016 best-of lists.

I recorded this set from our usual location at Union Pool, the room mics combined with a board feed from FOH Kevin. I mixed those down and then Sohrab provided some additional mastering. The results are excellent. Enjoy!

You may have not heard of Matchess before, but chances are you’ve listening to music from Whitney Johnson for a while now. She’s accumulated some impressive credits playing with her like-minded Chicago neighbors Ryley Walker, Circuit Des Yeux, and Bichin Bajas, not to mention her band Verma who have got a few records out on Trouble in Mind. Meanwhile, Johnson has been releasing a steady stream of solo work under the alias Matchess: Seraphasta was released in 2013 on highly respected tape label Digitalis and was then reissued by Trouble in Mind, who also put our her second record Somnaphoria. Just this past May, she switched to Austin label Monofonus Press for her latest album, The Rafter. Matchess combines vocals, synthesizers, tape loops, and live viola into textural, ambient songs. Her compositions are anything but grounded, sounding more like something sighted or visited in outer space. Among other appearances at Northside Festival, including one with Grouper, Matchess joined in for the Monofonus Press showcase, giving us all a respite from the heavier fare with her quieter, but challenging, set.

The Gotobeds: June 11, 2016 Union Pool (Unblinking Ear Northside Showcase)

The Gotobeds
[photo via Lauren Piper, Bushwick Daily]

Consider The Gotobeds music by and for music nerds. The Pittsburgh post-punks aren’t shy about their influences—hell, the band is named after Wire’s drummer after all. And while some internet rags may take issue with a band that wears its influences proudly, these guys clearly don’t take themselves overly seriously and they don’t expect you to either. Their first record for Sub Pop, Blood // Sugar // Secs // Traffic, came out on June 10th and that weekend they stopped by Brooklyn for a couple shows at Northside Festival. We made it out for a typically loose set at the afternoon Unblinking Ear Records Showcase at Union Pool. The band plays the hits old an new, including my personal favorite, “Bodies,” which has been stuck in my head since last August if we’re talking earworms… So pretend it’s Saturday afternoon: chill out, have a beer, soak in the songs—and while you’re at it, go see The Gotobeds on their ongoing tour.

I recorded this set from our usual spot in the venue, with a soundboard feed from Union Pool FOH, Kevin. The results are excellent. Enjoy!

As an added bonus, we’ve uploaded the complete set from the Gotobeds’ show at Saint Vitus last year, which had originally been redacted to exclude songs off their (then) upcoming record. Check here for the restored recording!
