Country Mice: November 16, 2011 Glasslands – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

Yes, New York, we do have our very own homegrown answer to Alabama’s Drive-By Truckers, and they’re called Country Mice. They don’t celebrate Southern roots they don’t have (two bandmembers are from Lawrence, Kansas), sure, but the rootsy tinge to their sound, married to big, balls-to-the-wall major chord riffs, will draw immediate comparisons. Although I had enjoyed sets of theirs before, this PopGun Booking‘-sponsored show at Glasslands showcased a tight, confident and mature band ready to take things to the next level. This set, opening for the Nashville guitar wizard William Tyler, led off with some new songs before moving into material from their recent Kanine Records release Twister and continuing to mix those in with the non-Twister material.  After the already-packed house had screamed its approval for songs like “Morning Son” and “Bullet of a Gun”, the set crescendoed, appropriately, at the final number, “Festival” off of Twister. With Twister under their belts and more good ideas coming, Country Mice are sure to keep winning converts on both sides of the Mason-Dixon.

I recorded this set with Schoeps “open cardiod” microphones to give a wide, expansive soundstage, coupled with a soundboard feed by Josh at Glasslands. The sound is excellent. Enjoy!

Arbouretum: October 14, 2011 Glasslands – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

Thrill Jockey’s band page for Arbouretum describes them as a “taper’s dream”, and they could well be right about that.  With open song structures, a hard-rocking, Southern-informed psych-rock sound an solid dose of showmanship, the band comes off a bit like an updated, thinking man’s version of bands like CCR and Lynyrd Skynyrd, and they play a hell of a good show that doesn’t belie that comparison.  The band took the stage behind a veil of smoke, launching into a brief psychedelic intro before hitting full stride on “False Spring” the leadoff track to their 2009 record, Song of the Pearl.  That led into “White Bird”, the sole song played from their latest Thrill Jockey release, The Gathering.  The musical virtuosity only went up from there, with “Down By the Fall Line” leading directly into “Mohammed’s Hex and Bounty” in a combined 17-minute piece that found the band in top form.  Frontman Dave Heumann puts a lot of thought into his dense, literary lyrics, and (somewhat unusually for an indie artist) actually sings them so you can hear them.  As audience members called out various rarities and covers throughout the set, the band finally obliged with a ripping version of CCR’s “Long As I Can See the Light.”

I recorded this set with my usual mounted setup of DPAs on the center post plus a soundboard feed from Josh, the head FOH engineer at Glasslands. The sound is excellent.  Enjoy!

Eternal Tapestry: October 14, 2011 Glasslands – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

Portland’s Eternal Tapestry brought their heavy left coast psych rock to Glasslands this past Friday night, performing three long-form compositions of their densely layered guitar, bass, and saxophone (an instrument that seems to be making a big comeback lately!). The first two numbers came from the band’s latest record, Beyond the 4th Door, but the final track, “Doing Your Own Being”, was my personal highlight. With its eastern-inflected sax melody, the song is not only compelling, but rare. Released only on the very-limited-edition box set, Not the Spaces You Know, But Between Them on North Carolina imprint Three Lobed Recordings, this was likely many audience members’ first exposure to this incredible tune. Eternal Tapestry have reportedly made several records by essentially culling down live in-studio sessions, so unsurprisingly, the actual live show is a thing of beauty, as the band reworks and expands upon their songs on the fly. They don’t make it out east as often as we would like, so don’t miss them on the next go round.

I recorded this set with the DPA microphones mixed with an excellent board feed from Josh at Glasslands. As usual for this venue, the sound is excellent!

Without question one of my surprise favorite performances of the year was Hoop Dreams, a Blacksburg, Virginia band signed to Captured Tracks. We caught them on a summer night at Glasslands with a packed crowd, typical for a PopGun Booking, and for what was likely their NYC debut. While having only recently released their first single XCPR (which has found a permanent place in my daily playlist) this summer, Hoop Dreams performed ten highly polished songs. With the captivating voice of vocalist Max Brooks and bass-driven melodies, Hoop Dreams could easily be the kid brother of Depeche Mode and The National.

Acidjack and I captured this performance with a pair of Schoeps Cardioid microphones and mixed it with an excellent soundboard feed provided by the house. We hope you enjoy this breakout performance and fantastic recording!

Skeletons: August 25, 2011 Glasslands – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

Originally a solo project of Chicago native Matt Mehlan, Skeletons‘ lineups change frequently, but their commitment to challenging, engaging post-rock does not. Skeletons are reflexively described as “experimental”, but that tag ignores Mehlan’s proclivity for making music that can be as catchy as it is complex. This show at Glasslands, courtesy of PopGun Booking, kicked off with “More Than The One Thing,” a feel-good tune whose combination of tribal, global sounds with pop songcraft brings to mind acts like Vampire Weekend and Here We Go Magic, and followed, as it does on the band’s latest record, with the similarly catchy “Wal-Mart and the Ghost of Jimmy Damour.”

But in case anyone was worried that Skeletons were bowing to the college-rock set, Mehlan took the show in a radically different direction, with a combined 22-plus minute combination of the free jazz referencing “Paint Over It” which segued directly into “Grandma”, with its engaging lead guitar and propulsive beat. “Thank you for making it through that,” Mehlan joked at the end of that mini-epic, but he needn’t have apologized for what was, in my view, the highlight of the set.  One of Mehlan’s greatest strengths is his ability to change directions rapidly and weave disparate elements into a cohesive whole, and this combination spoke to that fusion element perfectly.

I found some songs, in particular the first two, slightly more accessible (meaning, poppy) than their versions on the band’s latest record, People, which is released on the Oberlin-based Shinkoyo.  That may also owe to the fact that this show was played by the band’s leanest lineup – Mehlan also enjoys playing shows as the “Skeletons Big Band”, which gives him a much more expansive sonic palette to play with.  While People was well represented at this show, it is worth delving into Skeletons’ back catalog as well, including the excellent Lucas, which was released on Ghostly International in 2007 (and represented at this show by the melancholy slow-burner “Push ‘im Out”).  I’ll be looking forward to Skeletons’ next show – hopefully with the big band!

I recorded this set with a perfect soundboard feed combined with the DPA microphones and an analog preamp.  The sound quality is outstanding. Enjoy!

Exitmusic: August 19, 2011 Glasslands – FLAC/MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

A Friday night show at Glasslands, setup by PopGun Booking, featured four great bands including Exitmusic, a duo of Aleksa Palladino and Devon Church. This Secretly Canadian band has been on the scene for a number of years, but recently signed to their new label and are slated to release their upcoming EP, From Silence. While we missed Exitmusic during their recent residency at Pianos, the show at Glasslands did not disappoint as they played six songs, two of which we had not heard before. Their first song, “The Sea,” filled the room with a complex, layered sound that immediately had the listener fully immersed. By the last song, a seven minute epic titled “Sparks of Light,” it was clear that Exitmusic has a captivating sound that will, no doubt, continue to evolve with each live performance.

This set was recorded with a pair of Schoeps Cardioid microphones clamped high on a column dead-center in the room. Derek, Glassland’s sound engineer, provided an incredibly well balanced feed which resulted in one of the best mixes I’ve heard from Glasslands. The sound quality is excellent and we hope you enjoy!

The folks over at PopGun Booking have a deserved reputation for putting some of the best up-and-coming acts on the Glasslands stage months and years before the wider public notices. When I saw Widowspeak back in March, they were a very new band with almost no recorded output, but they were already very much on their game as performers, with many great songs already in the hopper. Almost five months later to the day, and the band was back at Glasslands celebrating the release of their self-titled debut record on the hot Brooklyn imprint Captured Tracks.  The band’s set was if anything more confident and polished than the March show, and unsurprisingly featured more songs, including the newer tracks “Gun Shy”, “Hard Times”, “Half Awake” and a new number I could not identify by name (just bought the album this morning). “Half Awake,” being performed live for the first time, is one of the most somber tunes in the band’s catalog, but it is beautiful in its bleakness.

We also caught another great performance from the band back in June, presented by Brooklyn promoter ToddP at the DIY venue 285 Kent next door. This set sounds fantastic, and although a bit shorter than the Glasslands set, has many of the band’s strongest songs, including the standout new single “Gun Shy”. I’m also a sucker for the band’s cover of Chris Isaak’s “Wicked Game,” which they played at the show I saw back in March, and is also the b-side of the “Gun Shy” single.

The 285 Kent set was recorded with Neumann microphones and a soundboard feed from an ideal location in the venue that avoided a lot of the chatter going on. The Glasslands recording was made with perfectly situated Schoeps microphones and a great soundboard feed from Derek, but there is a light buzzing emanating from an onstage monitor that is captured in the board feed. With that caveat (and a bit of crowd chatter during a few songs), that recording is also excellent. Enjoy!

White Suns: June 16, 2011 Northside Festival, Glasslands – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

The arresting noisecore squall of White Suns is not for everybody. The band makes challenging, relentless music that pushes boundaries and often defies conventional understandings of song structure and composition. To the unitiated or unready, their music might just sound like an unholy racket – discordant, squealing guitars, sporadic gunfire bursts of drumming, demolished electronics. But White Suns are clearly fine with that – this is not a band that bends its will to the masses, clearly. But unlike a lot of the bands of their type, they are not merely cerebral avant-rockers pushing boundaries for boundaries’ sake. Their songs seethe volatility and anger a la more traditional punk and hardcore, but without their often rote structure and dynamics. The crowd at Glasslands on this opening night of Northside Festival was clearly ready for White Suns, and the band gave a short but powerful set, opening up with a brooding, clangorous improvisation into the song “Voyeur,” followed by an untitled new number that was the most straight-ahead hardcore song of the night, and ending with a seven-minute “Fire Sermon,” a masterful exploration of noise dynamics that found singer/guitarist Kevin Barry repeatedly knocking his mic stand to the floor. Although their set came and went in about 20 minutes, White Suns left an indelible impression.

hi and lo and I recorded this set from the same location as the Mr. Dream and Sleepies recordings. The sound of this one is particularly good. Enjoy!

Sleepies are a Brooklyn punk band that I have now had the pleasure of seeing twice, both times on bills shared with their friends Mr. Dream. This Northside Festival show found them in fine form, delivering their raw brand of punk rock to a crowd that was hungering for it. The band’s sound takes several cues from the Sex Pistols, such as on the ragged “Summer Bummer.” Sleepies already have some solid recorded output, including two songs on bandcamp that are produced by Mr. Dream’s Nick Sylvester, and an LP available here. Check them out the next time you can!

Now seems like as good a time as any to address the old knock on New York audiences – that they tend to spend the entire show with their arms crossed, listless, distracted and bored. But let’s face it – we see a lot of bands here in New York City, and most of them don’t provide us any reason to do anything else. Not so the rapidly rising Mr. Dream. With their clean, crisp Pixies-inspired delivery, Mr. Dream manage to capture the energy of punk while making it clear that they actually care how they sound as they deliver their inspired head-banging tunes. The songs from their almost-debut record, Trash Hit, are a one-after-another string of great rock songs, and the title track “Trash Hit” in particular has that ability to lodge itself in your brain and not leave. This set on the kickoff night of the Northside Festival found the band playing to a friendly and familiar crowd that they rewarded by debuting three new songs, “Believing and Shitting,” “Moneybags” and “Suggested Plowing.” The band has been raising its profile of late, including with a video for the song “Croquet,” which they killed on this night, followed by the balls-to-the-wall “Winners.” In the short span since we saw them last, the band have gotten more confident and tighter, and drummer Nick Sylvester has emerged as the band’s true anchor with his massive work behind the kit. Hell, Mr. Dream may just be one of the best live bands in New York right now. So uncross those arms and turn off those iPhones, ladies and gentlemen, and get your ass ready for Mr. Dream.

hi and lo and I recorded this set from a central location in the venue with Schoeps omnidirectional mics to capture the maximum feel of the room. Although there is some faint buzzing at times in the left channel due to some wiring issues, the sound is overall excellent. Enjoy!
