Mission of Burma: July 28, 2013 Maxwell’s (Early Show) – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

Mission of Burma didn’t hold back on this two set bill on the Maxwell’s closing weekend. Each of the two sets featured the same kind of raw energy that has represented not only this band and this club, but the best of independent music over the past 35 years. As we noted in our review of the late set, this was a night to acknowledge history, and this set did plenty of that, but it also reminded us that there is more to come. Many of the people I saw pumping their fists for Burma — myself included — were kids or not even born the first time they played there. On this night, songs like “7s” from their latest, Unsound, sounded right at home next to old, rare numbers like “Peking Spring”, which was first released on cassette in 1985 and didn’t see broader release until showing up on a 1993 CD compilation. As they did for the second set, the band closed with “Academy Fight Song”. Then I turned off my deck, took down my equipment, and took one last look. I would never set foot in Maxwell’s again, and after their second set, neither would they. Now Hoboken has gone quiet, but the echoes of thousands of memorable nights remain.

I recorded this set with MBHO cardiod microphones from our usual spot in the venue. Other than a few light spots of wind noise from the A/C ducts, the sound is excellent. Enjoy!

Woods: July 27, 2013 Bowery Ballroom – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

As Woods played in front of a fantasia of psychedelic swirls provided by Drippy Eye Projections, I thought back to another of many memorable Woods shows I’ve been to, where they played Abrons Arts Center with the Joshua Light Show, which these projections most resembled. Or there was the time they played St. Cecilia’s Church during the 2011 Northside Festival. Or the first couple times I saw them, in both cases opening for bands they are much bigger than now and whose careers they have outlasted, and thought, wow, these guys are really different. And they’re great. 

Like all bands with staying power, Woods have continued to evolve without abandoning the core elements of their sound — Jeremy Earl’s nasal, high pitched voice, the ramshackle folk, the not-quite-retro psychedelia. What has evolved into a very different beast is the band’s now-huge guitar sound, which barely resembles their earlier records and has turned them into a sonic juggernaut live. When the one minute, fifty four second song “I Was Gone” becomes a fourteen-minute behemoth of a jam now, the reaction isn’t being surprised or impressed that they’re trying it — it’s paying attention to what will be good about this version of the song. A Woods set, which rarely runs far past an hour, has become like a controlled dose of Grateful Dead. Every minute is worth watching, and the “jam songs” are ones you feel compelled to debate the best one of, date by date.

This set at Bowery Ballroom, which closed out their latest U.S. tour after a well-received Pitchfork Festival appearance the previous weekend, recalled several elements of the November show at Music Hall that we attended, but with a couple of exciting new offerings. Not only did the band play the new song “Shining”, which we assume will appear on their next record or in recorded format at some point, but they were also joined by Alex Bleeker of opening act Alex Bleeker and the Freaks for a special rendition of Creedence Clearwater Revival’s ever-popular “Have You Ever Seen the Rain”. Woods will be spending August in Europe and September on the West Coast. If you’re in either of those places, don’t miss seeing them. Tour dates can be found [HERE].

Porcelain Raft, aka Mauro Remiddi, has produced a wide range of music in his life, all of which has been distilled to its essence in his current electronic compositions. This short set, billed as a full run-through of his Soundcloud-only EP Silent Speech, veered from that work’s original format into its own grand, live-sequenced creation. With the still-new house soundsystem at Glasslands providing ample reinforcement, this short but sweet set whetter our appetites for Porcelain Raft’s forthcoming Secretly Canadian LP Permanent Signal, which you can preorder via the link below.

I recorded this set with our installed rig in the venue, with Naiant microphones and a soundboard feed from house engineer Josh Thiel. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Part of the joy of seeing bands in a small venue is the unpredictability. Small venues, even the best ones, are always fighting hard to hold it together, and it’s often a losing battle. Gear breaks down, beverage lines go stale, some asshole from some opening band breaks your backline, the A/C goes out, the health inspector is on your case, someone’s stealing from the till, someone else called in sick, the toilet’s clogged — owning a small music venue isn’t an endeavor for the faint of heart, or someone who doesn’t want to work. But at the same time, small venues are also where bands take risks. At Madison Square Garden or something, with an enormous light system, you won’t be varying the setlist or stage diving or interacting with a crowd where the nearest people are six feet from the stage. And you don’t have the safety net of a video screen or some other gimmick to make people care. You make them care with your own sweat.

For longer than many of the people in this crowd for …And You Will Know It By the Trail of Dead‘s show had even been going to concerts, the crew at Maxwell’s worked tirelessly to make that club a place that musicians wanted to play, that real fans wanted to hang out in, and that represented the best of their home in Hoboken. And they succeeded, more than most could ever claim to, in all of that.

But you wouldn’t have blamed Trail of Dead if they’d thrown hissy fits and run offstage after the first issue with the circuit breaker shut off the entire PA. Or when a monitor malfunctioned. Or when the PA blew again. They’re a veteran band. They don’t need this shit. But if you want to be the kind of band that plays at Maxwell’s — that stays close to its audience, that remembers where it came from — then you learn to deal. And that’s exactly what the Austin band did. When “Another Morning Stoner” got cut off, they didn’t just move on to the next song. They played a shortened, stripped-down version. They also played one of the most memorable performances of theirs I’ve seen. Try to deny the power of “Will You Smile Again”, the first thing played after the gear got working again, or the searing “A Perfect Teenhood”, or the “Caterwaul” where guitarist/singer Jason Reece took the mic to the back of the room to sing, at one point doing so from inside the sound booth. (The above photo is taken from that area).

In taking a show that had its challenges — that in less cool hands could’ve been a shambolic mess — and turning into a night none of us would forget, they paid the most fitting tribute to the venue of all.

I recorded this set with a soundboard feed combined with Schoeps MK5 microphones. While the overall sound quality is excellent, I’d like to emphasize again that the equipment issues are nobody’s “fault” — not the band’s, not the Maxwell’s staff’s. Sometimes, these things happen. Enjoy!

Chuck Johnson: May 26, 2013 Mercury Lounge – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

After getting a preview of what was to come last year at Hopscotch Music Festival, we expected Chuck Johnson‘s 2013 record Crows In the Basilica to be an important part of the conversation on best guitar records of the year. That was confirmed both by Basilica’s release on Three Lobed Recordings this spring, as well as by this performance at Mercury Lounge, where Chuck demonstrated that the subtle brilliance of his compositions can’t be contained by the studio.

Chuck and his contemporaries are almost always categorized by the label “American Primitive”, a sub genre of guitar playing shared with its progenitor John Fahey and many other worthy players, but the term “primitive” as understood by most is misleading. Rather than suggesting a simplicity or naïveté to the material, American Primitive is best understood as a recognition of the ability of these players to use highly complex guitar arrangements that link the instrument’s present with its more elemental, folk-derived origins. Before venturing out as a solo player, Johnson played in well-regarded North Carolina bands like Shark Quest and the string trio Idyll Swords, but it is here where Johnson’s skill on guitar is best appreciated. We hope you will enjoy this moving set of music from Johnson and be on the lookout for his future shows.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK41 supercardiod microphones from our usual spot in the venue, plus a soundboard feed provided by Mercury team. Given that it is a recording of a single instrument, the recording heavily favors the soundboard feed, with a bit of audience mics mixed in to give a feel of the room. It is an excellent recording. Holy Wave: April 23, 2013 Music Hall of Williamsburg – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

The Austin band Holy Wave didn’t shy from the task of warming up the Music Hall of Williamsburg crowd last month before GOAT’s epic performance (that one here). Rocking a dense, intricate psychedelic style reminiscent of bands like The Black Angels and the Brian Jonestown Massacre, the band played material from their current release, Evil Hits (a combination of their The Evil Has Landed and Knife Hits EPs) plus new material that we hope will see the light of day soon. Set against the backdrop of swirling live light projections, the band gave us a taste of what they had in store for the Austin Psych Fest, which they played later that week, and gave us an appropriate intro to the wild GOAT set that was to follow.

I recorded this set in the same manner as the GOAT recording, with MBHO microphones. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Yo La Tengo: June 22, 2013 Solid Sound Festival (North Adams, MA) – FLAC/MP3/Streaming Song

There’s not a ton more I can add about Yo La Tengo that hasn’t been said about them on this site already and recently, at that. Suffice it to say, they are a classic band who have only continued to grow and evolve with time, and any opportunity to see YLT is one worth taking. The band has been on an intense tour schedule for most of this year behind their latest, Fade, but they still sound as fresh as they did debuting the new material back in December at Maxwell’s. This one-hour set at the Solid Sound Festival is an abridged version of a full YLT show, but YLT still packed in a variety of great material, including the excellent combination of “Ohm” and “Blue Line Swinger” to close out the night. They will be hitting a number of other festivals and various shows in North America, the UK and Japan this summer, and we‘d recommend you not miss them if they’re in your city.

Site contributor Kubacheck recorded this set with MBHO cardiod microphones from near the soundboard. While the large room and the distance from the band were not ideal, the sound quality of the recording is nonetheless quite good. Enjoy!

Futurebirds: June 7, 2013 Mountain Jam IX (Hunter, NY) – FLAC/MP3/Streaming Full Set

The Futurebirds have built a following in the grand tradition of rock bands of yore — touring like hell and putting on a solid show at each stop, whether they’re the headliner or the undercard. Thus, we’ve gone from seeing them at Union Pool (capacity: 100) as headliner in 2011 to opener for Heartless Bastards at Irving Plaza in 2012 to headlining Bowery Ballroom in 2013. Color me less than surprised that the Mountain Jam organizers — eager to broaden that festival’s base beyond the purely “jam band” scene but wanting to stock the fest with acts whose live show could pass muster — added Futurebirds to the bill. While being on the smaller Healey Brothers indoor stage may not have seemed like a blessing at first, this Friday of the festival had non-stop torrential rain from afternoon until late night, meaning this set gave fans an opportunity to not only see a great act, but to get dry for a bit. Those smart enough to do so got sixty solid minutes of Futurebirds, in a set that hit many of their live show highlights like “M J D”, “Battle For Rome” and “Virginia Slims” and left fans wanting more. Dressed in rain ponchos they didn’t bother to take off, the band’s energy and enthusiasm made a strong argument for an invite to the bigger stage next year.

I recorded this set with MBHO microphones at the soundboard. This room had a sub-optimal design for live sound, especially at the relatively long distance from the stage where I was setup. Further, there is some crowd chatter that can be heard from time to time. While this recording is not up to the standard of the site’s other three Futurebirds recordings, it is a worthwhile listen. Enjoy!

Mike Doughty: June 19, 2013 Music Hall of Williamsburg – FLAC/MP3/Streaming Songs + Full Set

Fans of Mike Doughty, previously known as “M Doughty”, lead singer of seminal ’90s oddballs Soul Coughing, may already be familiar with the journey of self-discovery that led him to abandon his role as frontman of a popular act to become a freewheeling solo performer, with the waypoints of addiction and recovery (not to mention what some incorrectly interpreted as a religious conversion) along the way. Mike told the whole story in his 2012 memoir, The Book of Drugs, but if you followed his solo work from early last decade to now, much of the story was already there for the taking.

Though Mike’s solo efforts have abandoned some of the more frenetic elements of the Soul Coughing sound, which culled rhythmic textures from soul, funk and hip-hop, his solo work retains that band’s most distinctive element — Mike’s voice. Though his voice won’t be accused of having big-rock-singer range, it is one of the most distinctive of recent decades. A kind of sing-speak whose flow is at times reminiscent of hip-hop and scatting, Doughty’s voice is custom-built for storytelling. Similarly, his lyrics are smart, evocative, and unabashedly original. Nobody sees the world quite the way that Mike Doughty does.

This set, performed opening for Low at Music Hall of Williamsburg, found Doughty in the format with which he’s now most comfortable, stripped down to him, an acoustic guitar and a drummer. For almost a full hour, Mike led us on a journey through his entire solo career, from early 2000s work from Skittish and Rockity Roll (now available as a single 2-record release) such as “Shunned + Falsified”, “Ossining” and his first solo single, “27 Jennifers”, to his newest work like “Na Na Nothing” (which Doughty claims was “partially stolen” from a song written by Nikki Sixx, Dan Wilson and Matt Gerrard) and his cover of John Denver’s “Take Me Home, Country Road”. Even on the fairly large Music Hall stage, Mike’s set felt like an intimate evening in a living room, with Mike amiably taking (and turning down some) requests and making his fair share of self-deprecating jokes. One of my personal favorites, and one of the most obviously autobiographical, was “Looking At the World From the Bottom of A Well” from 2005’s Haughty Melodic. It’s worth noting that that record also represented Mike’s first major-label record since leaving Soul Coughing and spending the first half the decade self-releasing his records and touring under his own steam. The music world has fewer great second acts than maybe it ought to, but Mike’s is one of the most inspiring of all. As to what he’s up to this year, Mike is busy re-recording and re-interpreting thirteen of his Soul Coughing classics, which will be self-released later this year. French Films: June 4, 2013 Mercury Lounge – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

The Finnish band French Films isn’t yet well-known here in the U.S., but that seems poised to change. Like their fellow travelers Hooded Fang, who they joined for this Mercury Lounge bill, they have a reasonably deep repertoire (they formed in 2010) as well as the chops to deliver it live. Taking their cues sonically from Beatlesque pop and the early-aughts New Wave revival, the band’s sound combines their propensity for hummable hooks with a darker tinged edge. What they’ve done so far was good enough to earn them a European Border Breakers Award, which honors the best new musical acts across Europe, and they are using that to jumpstart their foray into the U.S., which also included a show at Glasslands a few days before this show. This set, which drew the largest crowd of the night, found them playing their European hit, “Escape In The Afternoon”, along with material from this year’s release, White Orchid. One of the band members noted his attendance at an early Strokes show at this same venue, and I feel like a little pixie dust from those legendary shows from last decade rubbed off on these guys and their excellent set as well.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK41 supercardiod microphones and a soundboard feed provided by French Films’ traveling FOH. The sound quality is excellent. Please note that the set has some songs removed, at the band’s request. Enjoy!
