Crime & The City Solution: October 22, 2012 Music Hall of Williamsburg – Flac/MP3/Streaming

These twenty-year reunions can be mixed affairs. Some bands are content to simply play the “hits” (i.e. Pixies, Wedding Present), while others re-establish themselves as working bands performing both old and newer material (Dinosaur Jr., Mission of Burma). When Crime & The City Solution announced their first tour and album in more than twenty years, the hope would be that they would follow the latter course. Crime didn’t really have any “hits” to recycle anyway. At Music Hall last week, it was quite apparent from the outset that this was indeed a vital working band and while just three new songs were performed, the title track from the new album (American Twilight) was played in the final encore slot. The other obvious positive sign was that Crime was not just mailing it in — in fact it was quite the opposite. This performance was intense, tight, and inspired. Band founder and leader Simon Bonney anchored the centerstage with his dramatic and confident vocals while the twin guitars of Alex Hacke and David Eugene Edwards were both powerful and animated. The eight-piece band wasted precious little time with formalities but simply rocked hard from start to finish. I left the venue encouraged that sometimes second acts (or for Crime, third or fourth acts) can be just as compelling as the brand new. While their US tour is now complete, Crime & The City Solution will continue to tour in Europe for the balance of this month. We expect that they will return to NYC in the not too distant future, as American Twilight will be released on Mute Records in the Spring.

I recorded this set from the center of the balcony with the Sennheisers mounted on the railing at a lower level to line up with the stacks. While the sound in the venue was somewhat boomy, we EQ’d a little bass roll-off and boosted the highs. The clarity (and vocals) now supplement the rich bottom end for an excellent recording. Enjoy!

Pop. 1280: September 7, 2012 Hopscotch Festival (Raleigh, NC) – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

Like more than a few bands from our part of the country, NYC’s Pop. 1280 made the trip down to this year’s Hopscotch Music Festival in Raleigh, North Carolina to share the tiny stage at Slim’s with some like-minded North Carolina bands as well as some bad-ass New York contemporaries. On a bill that also featured nyctaper favorites White Hills along with Chapel Hill’s Pipe and Raleigh’s Whatever Brains, Pop. 1280 fell more in line stylistically with the two NC bands, combining a heavy, aggressive punk-influenced sound with synth flourishes that helped identify them more with our neck of the woods. This set covered material from the band’s first two previous Sacred Bones Records releases, 2010’s The Grid and 2012’s The Horror.  The band expects to have another record under their belt some time in 2013, which it would appear some of the “unknown” songs below may be on.

Like the Whatever Brains and Pipe recordings from this show, this set was recorded by NC taper Dave Schwentker with fellow North Carolinian Bryon’s ceiling-installed Countryman B3 omnidirectional mics. The sound is excellent. Enjoy!

Chelsea Light Moving: September 12, 2012 285 Kent – Flac/MP3/Streaming

Chelsea Light Moving is Thurston Moore’s new band. As Sonic Youth is on hiatus and has left the future of the band somewhat of a mystery, the various members have pursued their own projects. Thurston chose to debut Chelsea Light Moving with a series of concerts throughout Europe, but their very first show in NYC took place in mid-September at 285 Kent. The show was presented by Issue Project as a Benefit for Tom Carter, which acidjack outlined in his post of the Gunn-Truscinski Duo set from this show. Suffice to say, we applaud the artists who performed for Tom at this show. You too can support Tom by following this link.

Chelsea Light Moving has released four songs at Matador and through various media outlets in anticipation of a full length release later this year, or early next. At 285 Kent, the band began the set with those four songs. We’re streaming “Frank O’Hara Hit” in which Thurston riffs on the concept of having a birthday in July. Its also the most “familiar” sounding song of the bunch for SY fans. The balance of the set consisted of material that has not yet been released, and the song titles are approximated from our research into info about CLM online. The song we’ve titled “I Come to Get Wasted” (at the suggestion of this Spin review of the show) gave Thurston an opportunity to really stretch and his guitar playing on this track is notable for both its aggression and imagination. We expect that Thurston will continue to grow this material and we look forward to the development of this new project.

I recorded this show in the usual manner for this venue. The Sennheiser Cards were mounted near the stage and after requesting and receiving permission to supplement the somewhat boomy room with a board feed, we mixed in about 25% of the board for clarity in the vocals and guitars. The result is an overall excellent recording, as SY’s FOH Aaron mixed this difficult room about as well as anyone has done. Enjoy!

Thieving Irons, the current project of Brooklyn musician Nate Martinez, is a fairly gentle, vibey sort of band even in its electric format, so I was excited to see how their sound would change in a true “acoustic” setting. The band’s second album, Behold, This Dreamer! is a lovely piece of rainy-afternoon music, with gauzy production and at-times confessional lyrics that also incorporate historical and literary references. This most recent installment of the Backyard Brunch Sessions – held due to weather in a Prospect Heights apartment – gave Martinez the chance to distill his vision further, stripping his band to a duo of himself on vocals and guitar and longtime collaborator Dan Brantigan on a rare instrument called the EVI (a sort of synth trumpet, and a large component of that “vibey” sound). As a crowd gathered around with organizer David Chaitt’s spicy granola (made spicy by local Mike’s Hot Honey), Martinez and Brantigan played us eight songs that represented the range of Martinez’s current vision, all of them but two from Behold.

Two of the album’s biggest rockers, “Sleepwalking Into the Ocean” and “So Long” were among my favorite reinterpretations, not least because they differed the most from the album tracks. Even without the anthemic guitars and keyboards, “Sleepwalking” retained its resolute hopefulness and uplift; the poetry of “So Long” – possibly the album’s most memorable song – shone through, as Brantigan’s EVI provided a spare dreamscape in the background. Another of the show’s highlights, dedicated to GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney, was a cover of the Kinks classic “Strangers”, a song that ought to resonate in a modern, more self-absorbed time. The band closed with “Gentle Hands”, a pastiche of images that, at its conclusion, suggests a longing for home.

I recorded this set with AKG 414 large-diaphragm microphones set to “wide cardiod” in an X/Y pattern (pictured below) in order to reduce the directionality and provide a more stable stereo image. The sound is excellent. Enjoy!

The guitarist Steve Gunn joined longtime collaborator John Truscinski (with whom he comprises the unit Gunn-Truscinski Duo), and bassist Justin Tripp (along with Laura Ortman on violin for most of the set) for a very special trio performance to benefit the guitarist Tom Carter. Carter, who has worked on many projects over the years but is best known for his work in Charalambides, contracted a serious form of pneumonia while on tour in Europe, and has incurred significant medical bills while being treated in intensive care and, more recently, at recovery centers in both Germany and the United States. This show at 285 Kent, sponsored by the Issue Project Room, was designed to raise funds for Carter’s ongoing recovery. The community of avant-garde guitarists and musicians is incredibly tight-knit and supportive, and this contribution in New York was one of many efforts to support Tom around the world.

This set consisted of both new material and work from Gunn’s two most recent LPs for Three Lobed Recordings, one highlight of which was “The Lurker”, Gunn’s side from the out-of-print Three Lobed 10th anniversary box set. For that song, Gunn & co. were joined by Marc Orleans, who most recently collaborated with Carter on the Northern Spy Records release Eleven Twenty Nine. The song, like much of Gunn’s work, showcases a range of styles and unique phrasing, and Orleans’ participation made it all the more memorable. Streaming below is a rollicking full-band version of the 2012 Gunn classic “Trailways Gramble”, which appeared on Three Lobed’s compilation of work of eight outstanding American underground guitarists, Eight Trails, One Path. While a lot of this night’s crowd may have been there for the headliner, Thurston Moore’s Chelsea Light Moving, it was perhaps this unique collaboration of guitar talents that was the most fitting tribute to Carter and the work he has done to this point in his life. The Mountain Goats: October 16, 2012 Bowery Ballroom – Flac/MP3/Streaming

Last night, I was told by someone in the know that John Darnielle thought that Saturday night’s show in Brooklyn was perhaps the best of the tour. Our review concurred, as we found it one of the best Mountain Goats shows I’ve ever seen. So the question would be whether tMG matched that intensity for the other night we saw them on this tour, Tuesday at Bowery Ballroom. Bowery is undoubtedly one of our favorite venues — it feels like “home”. Its hard not to have a good time there. With that backdrop, its not for me to objectively say whether Tuesday night was “better” or “as good as” the epic Saturday performance. Suffice to say, it was a Mountain Goats show with a superb setlist, some neat banter, and horns (!). It would not be possible to go wrong with that combination and rather than try to analyze it, I’ll just that say I had a great time, the new album is outstanding, we’ll see tMG whenever we can, and the recording is killer. That should be enough.

This recording is a testament to the talents of the band’s tour FOH Brandon and the consistent excellence of Bowery and their staff. It was captured with the Sennheiser cards mixed with an excellent feed. The room mics are about 70% of the mix. Its sounds superb and we hope you enjoy!

The Everymen: October 7, 2012 Public Assembly – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

PopMatters and a few others stole my thunder when they suggested that The Everymen‘s new record, New Jersey Hardcore, might be better understood with the word “Hardcore” first instead of last. PopMatters didn’t intend that as an insult, and neither do I. The simple fact is, this is the sort of band that revels in, rather than shies from, its home state, and the tropes The Everymen borrow from fellow Garden State artists are some of the state’s most lovable. Musically, they are not, despite some punk leanings, “hardcore” in the sense that, say, Minor Threat was. But they’re a lot of fun.

This show at Public Assembly was the band’s release party for the record, which dropped October 9 on Killing Horse Records, and most of this crowd seemed thankful the following Monday was a holiday. Gruff-voiced frontman Mike V is the band’s beating heart, its big, rough-around-the-edges lovable – yes – everyman who you’d probably be cheering for even if you’d never met the guy. But sharing that stage is a bona fide rock band that includes sax, keyboards and its own version of Pavement’s percussionist/mascot Bob Nastanovich, and one that could power through an 18-song set on a Sunday night and gave a lot of different looks in the process. Consider just one sequence of covers during this show, when the band played Bobby Vinton’s “I Love How You Love”, then Reigning Sound’s “As Long”, then Midnight Oil’s “Beds Are Burning” – all pretty faithfully. The Billy Joel and (you guessed it) Springsteen covers came later on. But the band’s ability to mimic other bands shouldn’t take away from their original material, which also covers a lot of ground.  The leadoff track, “Dreams” showed off the band’s punk influences, as did “Coney Island High” which brought co-lead vocalist Catherine Herrick to the forefront. Other songs, like 2011’s “Ballad of Sarin” head in a different direction, with a prominent sax lead and a swing-y bounce. Much like the Garden State’s most famous artist, you get the sense that The Everymen’s main priority is putting on the most fun rock n’ roll show possible, wherever that takes them or however they need to do it. With the Jersey flag flying, the band’s encore was an extended version of “Boss Johnny & the Get Lucky”, a perfect coda to what Mike V called the band’s best show yet. Well, lucky him – it was also his birthday. As one of the audience members who had to work the next day, I took off right after the show, but when I left, there were still plenty of admirers looking to buy him a birthday shot.

I recorded this set with a soundboard feed from the Public Assembly house engineer, combined with AKG 414 large-diaphragm microphones.  Though the vocals are a tad low in the mix in the beginning, this is generally an excellent capture. Enjoy!

Frank Turner & The Sleeping Souls: September 30, 2012 Webster Hall – FLAC / MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

For a few years now, I’ve had several people telling me that I must go see a Frank Turner concert.  After listening to a few of his studio releases, I put him on my short-list of performers to catch.  With lyrics that spoke to the common man and woman about dealing with everyday problems and extolling life’s simple pleasures, accompanying generally upbeat, ear-catching song structure, I easily saw the appeal of his music.  What I wasn’t prepared for was the complete and utter adulation of the folks at the show.  Shortly after arriving, I met one girl who had seen him a dozen times and several others who claimed to have nearly as many Turner performances or more under their belts.  Hitting the stage for the second, and sold-out, night of a pair at Webster Hall, Frank and his excellent band, The Sleeping Souls (with guitarist Ben Lloyd, bassist Tarrant Anderson, keyboardist Matt Nasir and drummer Nigel Powell), had the majority of the crowd singing every word to the songs right from the start and, basically, at their beck and call.  Clap your hands?  No problem.  Play air harmonica?  We’re on it.  Dance around like lunatics?  Just watch us.  Thankfully, the artists and attendees encouraged the uninitiated and welcomed us with open arms.  Delivering songs from most of his albums, the bulk of 2011’s ‘England Keep My Bones‘ and even a few new tracks, there seemed to be something for everyone.  Suffice to say, I had a blast.  The only downside to the evening is that this was the last show of the band’s tour before they go into the studio to record their next album.  While I greatly anticipate the disc that Frank Turner & The Sleeping Souls will be releasing next year, I have to admit that I am just as excited looking forward to the next time I can see them play again.

With Webster Hall’s top-notch FOH, Creegan, on the controls and joined by the band’s equally superb engineer, Casey, at the helm, the sound was just about perfect for this night.  We were able to get a board feed to accompany our microphones and the resultant recording is excellent.  We hope you like what you hear as much as we did, and even sing, clap and dance to it if you want to.  Enjoy!

The Mountain Goats: October 13, 2012 Music Hall of Williamsburg – Flac/MP3/Streaming

Transcendental Youth is the fourteenth proper Mountain Goats album. Its another strong record that continues the themes that the Mountain Goats often explore, misfits and tragi-comedic characters. The new album also spurred a tour, and although John Darnielle played a show as part of the Ecstatic Music Fest in March, this was the band’s first proper visit to NYC in more than a year and half, and it resulted in four sold out shows. On Saturday night at Music Hall, the Mountain Goats performed eight songs from the new album within a set of both tMG standards and a few rare nuggets. John was particularly effusive and hilarious on this night with the between-song banter, and for this tour tMG were joined for part of the set with show-opener Matthew E. White’s horn section. The result was a long and thoroughly entertaining night of music, one of the best Mountain Goats shows we’ve seen.

I recorded this show from the center balcony rail with the Sennheisers mounted fairly low. The room was mixed to perfection by tMG sound engineer Brandon, and the result is one of our best recordings from the balcony spot in this venue. Enjoy!

Melvins “Lite”: October 4, 2012 Music Hall of Williamsburg – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

The “Lite” version of the Melvins (one drummer instead of two, no electric bass) is still a hell of a lot heavier than most bands on their best day, and this show at Music Hall of Williamsburg continued that trend. The band is on a quixotic mission to play 50 states in 51 days (possibly setting a world record), and this Brooklyn show found the band a little over halfway through their quest. If they were burned out from the relentless schedule, they didn’t show it; the band came out charging, in good spirits, and as ear-bustingly loud as ever. Even without their usual dual-drummer setup, one Dale Crover can provide a whole lot of percussion, and Buzz Osborne’s guitars and Trevor Dunn’s upright bass similarly held their own. Dunn’s rocking out with the upright bass was a special thrill, as he manhandled the big bass like a smaller electric, playing on his back, twirling it over his head, and doing just about everything but smash it to bits all over the stage.  This set included some crowd pleasers from the band’s best-known album, Houdini  (“Hooch”, “Set Me Straight” and “Sky Pup”), but as usual, dug deep into the back catalog, kicking off with “Eye Flys” from the band’s first album, Gluey Porch Treatments. One highlight at several stops on this tour has been the “Inner Ear Rupture” and “Shevil” combo, and that closed the night’s set in special style, with the song stretching to a full 12 minutes. The band has a ways to go before they get the record, and we’re pulling for them!

Johnny Fried Chicken Boy and I were in the balcony of the venue in our usual spot for this set.  We used two pairs of mics that made roughly equal recordings, so much so that there didn’t seem to be much point combining the two sources.  This is my Schoeps MK41 supercardiod microphones in tightly-spaced configuration to provide as much direct sound as possible. The results are comparable to the site’s other excellent Melvins recordings from Music Hall, which you can locate by clicking the “Melvins” tag below. Enjoy!
