The Sea and Cake: November 8, 2011 Bowery Ballroom – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

“We feel like we’re in the Deep South,” said The Sea and Cake‘s Sam Prekop somewhere mid-set at the Bowery Ballroom this Tuesday. “And that’s a compliment.” No doubt Sam was referring to the level of enthusiasm from this weeknight crowd, including at least one audience member who seemed to think it was a Motley Crue concert. To hear a girl screaming “Bring the fuckin’ heat!” in between songs at an almost professorially mild-mannered, jazz-influenced Chicago indie act was certainly a new one for me in NYC. But that – and similar raging from others – added to the sense that, yes, after more than 20 years of delivering great music, a Sea and Cake show is still very much something to celebrate. With several of the members busy with other projects – Prekop and co-frontman Archer Prewitt with their solo careers, drummer John McEntire with NYCTaper favorite Tortoise – Sea and Cake shows aren’t as common as they otherwise could be.

Despite the band’s low-key approach, these guys turned the volume up loud. In a nearly 90-minute set, they covered the gamut of their career, from early-90s tunes like “Parasol” to offerings from their recent EP on Thrill Jockey, The Moonlight Butterfly. This show found the band in almost-perfect synch, playing the older songs like the classic “Afternoon Speaker” with the same enthusiasm shown for new work like “Inn Keeping.” “Leeora” gave a chance for some extended guitar meditation by Prewitt and Prekop, and a bit of a drum solo for McEntire, echoing some of his work in his other project.

Given the overwhelming reception they had received, The Sea and Cake seemed more than happy to play two encores – the highlight for me being “Parasol,” an older number, that also brought a huge audience roar. Who says you have to play the Deep South to be cheered like a champion?

I recorded this set with the DPA 4021 microphones from the optimal spot on the balcony. The sound is excellent, and thankfully the audience shenanigans are almost completely confined to in between songs. Enjoy!

Steve Kimock & Friends: November 4, 2011 Brooklyn Bowl – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

This Friday night show at Brooklyn Bowl was my first introduction to the “solo” work of the legendary guitarist Steve Kimock, who led the band Zero until the end of the 90s and has played with just about everybody. This “and Friends” billing featured the collaborators Bernie Worrell (the Parliament-Funkadelic keyboardist), his former Zero bandmate Bobby Vega, and drummer Wally Ingram, most famous for his work in Timbuk 3. Once hailed by Jerry Garcia as one of his favorite “unknown guitarists”, Kimock’s star has steadily risen, especially within the improvisational rock community. It’s not hard to see why – like the best guitarists in the genre, Kimock’s style is hard to pin down, though it is most often compared to Garcia himself (perhaps a reason that Kimock has appeared with many post-Dead projects, including The Other Ones). This two hour and 40 minute set was a masterful display of Kimock’s prowess, veering from almost reggae-like numbers and soul jams to heady psychedelic meditations. It also gave me a chance to see John Kimock, who recently played the Backyard Brunch Sessions with his band XVSK, onstage with his dad, as he played second drummer for a majority of the night. XVSK vocalist/cellist Trevor Exter, the other half of XVSK, joined the band for a cover of the Wood Brothers’ “The Luckiest Man”, which is streaming below.

I recorded this set from an optimal position in the venue with the AKG large-diaphragm microphones at a three foot split to provide a maximum soundstage but avoid crowd chatter. The results are excellent, and perhaps my favorite capture from Brooklyn Bowl to date. Enjoy!

Please note that we are updating the files to we have updated the files (as of late Wednesday) to reflect corrected tracking, and that update will be done shortly. We intend to upload this show to the Live Music Archive in a few days. Until then, please don’t upload it for us, there or anywhere else.

North Highlands: October 22, 2011 Cameo Gallery (CMJ) – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

November 9, 2011

[photo from North Highlands Facebook page]

North Highlands are one of Brooklyn’s most promising new indie-folk bands. Their 2010 Sugar Lips EP gave us a taste of their talent, as Brenda Malvini’s sweet vocals and keys are accompanied by a full band of accomplished musicians. In October, the band released their first full length album. Wild One is the full realization of those talents, as eleven-song album features infectious and expertly crafted melodies. At the Cameo Gallery on Saturday of CMJ week, North Highlands played in the middle of the bill but brought out a fine crowd for their 4 pm set time. The band’s short set featured five Wild One songs, and one apparent new song. We are streaming “Bruce” which features an irresistible hook that is spiced up with a nod to Springsteen’s “Dancing In The Dark”. North Highlands have two upcoming gigs, on November 17 at Shea Stadium and December 15 at Glasslands (PopGun Presents Holiday Party!).

I recorded this set in the same manner as the previous posts from this show. The vocal microphone was problematic for the first two songs so that the lead vocal levels are low, but ultimately reach the appropriate volume. With that caveat, enjoy!

Mr. Dream: October 21, 2011 NYCTaper CMJ Day Party at Cake Shop – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

We were thrilled that recent site favorites Mr. Dream were able to headline our CMJ Day Party this year at Cake Shop. With two Harvard-educated former music journalists in their lineup, Mr. Dream’s SST-and-Pixies-influenced sound reflects the bandmembers’ excellent taste in heavy but melodic music. Their live approach takes a similar long view of what makes a modern punk show successful. Their music is unrelenting and ballsy, but it’s also well-played, and it has a sense of humor. The band has garnered a ton of critical notice for their first full-length, Trash Hit, which has led to gigs with luminaries like LCD Soundsystem and Sleigh Bells. Not content to rest on their Trash Hit accolades, the band has continued working on new material that has slowly trickled out at recent live shows. This set boasted three of those new numbers in a row: “Moneybags” (which we saw debut at the band’s Northside Festival show), “What A Mess”, and “Palace Complex”. They rounded out this six-song set with three of their other can’t-miss numbers, closing out with the tongue-in-cheek “Learn the Language”. We couldn’t have been happier with Mr. Dream to send our crowd off to start the rest of their CMJ night.

This set was recorded in the same manner as the other CMJ 2011 sets, and is similarly outstanding. Enjoy!

Condo Fucks: November 4, 2011 Mercury Lounge – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

November 7, 2011

Condo Fucks exist as an alternative reality where Ira Kaplan, Georgia Hubley and James McNew can perform as an authentic 60’s garage band playing a selection of eclectic covers without the need to actually be Yo La Tengo at any point during the evening. On Friday night at Mercury Lounge, the alter-ego of one of the favorite bands of this site delivered a blistering thirty-five minute set that left the packed crowd shaking their heads in awe. As we have witnessed so many times at Yo La Tengo shows, the band is comprised of three of the most knowledgeable music fans around — they are literally encyclopedias of 20th Century popular music. So it was no surprise that the Mercury setlist contained only two songs from the sole Condo Fucks release, 2009’s Fuckbook. Instead, the band played eleven other covers, ranging from 50’s R&B, to 60’s iconoclasts The Fugs, to obscure early 70’s proto-punk (electric eels, Richard Hell), to 80’s alternative (Television Personalities), all performed in a high-speed, feedback-drenched, vocally-distorted garage sound. When the set ended far too soon with the Flamin’ Groovies “Dog Meat” (streaming below), a song originally actually recorded on a two-track cassette deck in an actual garage, we took solace in the fact that for their Hanukkah shows in a few weeks, Yo La Tengo will undoubtedly dig out some of these songs to spice up the eight shows’ setlists. See you then.

I recorded this set with the Neumann microphones mounted at the soundboard booth and combined with a perfectly mixed board feed. Per the band’s instructions, the vocals were mixed at maximum levels to capture that authentic overdriven 60’s garage sound, and the venue’s team captured that sound perfectly. Enjoy!

Hooray For Earth: October 27, 2011 Bowery Ballroom – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

Listen to one of their records, and you might wrongly conclude that Hooray for Earth are a “studio band”. Sure, there are big dance beats and rock hooks – especially on their debut EP Momo – but there is a lot to get into on these records that you might imagine would be hard to re-create live. Indeed, Noel Heroux, the creative force behind the band, is a wizard in the studio, and his beautifully produced, detailed compositions make for amazing headphone listening. But as we have continued seeing their shows over the past couple of years, HFE have also continued to develop as live performers who are comfortable turning Heroux’s studio compositions into a massive on-stage reveries. With their friends and fellow travelers Zambri providing the backing vocals once again (as they did at the Glasslands show in March), the more tribal, less four-to-the-floor tracks of the band’s latest, True Loves, came alive at this Bowery Ballroom homecoming show with tourmates Cymbals Eat Guitars (that recording here). Only two of the big, dance-y Momo tracks – “Rolling/Nectarine” and “Get Home” – made an appearance, as the set focused on the more mature True Loves material, including its two standout tracks, “True Loves” and “Black Trees”. Even those who didn’t know the band at all – and there were several near me – were chanting their name by the end of the set, and why not? This is the kind of band that is worth cheering for.

I recorded this set in the same manner as the Cymbals Eat Guitars recording, and the sound is excellent. Thanks again to Aaron Treptow for the hospitality. Enjoy!

Psychic Ills: October 31, 2011 Music Hall of Williamsburg – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

For some, Halloween means dressing up in an ironic/slut/wacky costume, and then hitting various bars acting like a jackass – which is totally cool by me. But for those seeking a tad more structure on a Monday Halloween night (and somewhere more interesting to wear said costume), Music Hall of Williamsburg offered an ideal bill of bands with a dark, psychedelic vibe – gothmeisters Exitmusic (our Glasslands recording of them here), headliners The Black Angels (our most recent recording of them here), and in the middle of the bill, the beloved NYC psychedelic outfit Psychic Ills. The band’s hypnotic new effort Hazed Dream, on Sacred Bones Records, has been a favorite of mine since it came out, and this show promised an early opportunity to hear the new material in action on MHOW’s powerful sound system. Dressed in full costume, the band launched into the first three tracks off of Hazed Dream to set a trippy mood, particularly during the Eastern-influenced “Incense Head”. Hazed Dream is the band’s most focused, “song-driven” record to date, and the live show backed that up, with the band mostly eschewing improvisation (other than in song transitions) and letting these tight compositions speak for themselves. Some say the Ills and like-minded bands (i.e., Wooden Shjips) are best enjoyed in a mind-altered state. Drugs or not, Halloween made for the perfect night to try that theory on. And yes, they and Halloween were indeed a good fit.

I recorded this set with DPA 4061 omnidirectional microphones, which produce a full, natural sound. The results are excellent. Enjoy!

Cymbals Eat Guitars: October 27, 2011 Bowery Ballroom – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

Cymbals Eat Guitars were critical darlings out of the gate, praised for the fully-realized vision of their 2009 debut album, Why There Are Mountains. While they used many 90s acts as touchstones – Pavement in particular – they were always viewed as purveyors of something new. Indeed, their latest effort and Barsuk Records debut, Lenses Alien, is a challenging followup record that combines frontman and songwriter Joseph D’Agostino’s dense verbiage with a caustic, acid-drenched sound. In this celebratory homecoming at the Bowery Ballroom, fresh off a national tour, the band showed us again what made them so special in the first place. Their songs can shift effortlessly from pop lullabyes to punk screeds, and they often do, keeping the listener on edge – witness the explosive ending to the creepy narrative “Plainclothes.” Although the attendance suffered a bit from the nasty weather, this show was a fitting coda to a tour whose sendoff was at Music Hall of Williamsburg. After playing “And the Hazy Sea” for their second encore – egged on by Noel from Hooray For Earth – CEG left the stage, tired but satisfied. And so were we.

I recorded this set with a soundboard feed from CEG’s longtime engineer Aaron Treptow and Kenny at Bowery Ballroom, and the Schoeps microphones. Aaron is supposedly retiring from live sound work for awhile – work from which he’ll be missed – but we know he will be successful in his future endeavors. We would like to thank him for hosting us.

Born Gold: October 22, 2011 Cameo Gallery CMJ Show – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

November 2, 2011

[blackberry photo by nyctaper]

If the photo posted above makes no sense, then you have not seen Born Gold live. The performer formerly known as “Gobble Gobble” has a new album out called Bodysongs, and he played a series of CMJ shows last week to support it, including the Saturday day show at Cameo Gallery. However, the live Born Gold experience can not be anticipated by just listening to the new album — its an experience that must be seen to be believed. The band is the recording project of Canadian Cecil Frena, who occupied the front center of the stage at a ten-foot table layered with a series of digital effects, mixers, laptops, pedals and assorted gadgets. On the floor in front of the stage were the other two members of the band who provided not only percussion, but also contributed to the electronic gadgetry and the overall histrionics. The entire show was lit by two green-tinted stage lights and a liberal use of a fog machine. Oh, and the music. Frena is a wizard with his gadgets, as he produced an aggressive throbbing beat layered with hypnotic melodies and effects-laden vocals. Each song ignited the crowd into a frenzy — at six o’clock in the afternoon. Its hard to imagine the level of crowd participation at a wild 3am club scene. Born Gold seems made for that setting.

We recorded this set in the same manner as the Prussia set posted yesterday. However, Born Gold provided a full mix of their sound to the board, and that mix was meticulously balanced. We stressed the room mics in our mixdown to accentuate the atmosphere and the result is an excellent recording with plenty of room feel. Enjoy!

Prussia is a self-described “experimental pop” band from Detroit. With two keyboards, often three guitars, and a range of sound effects to supplement the unique vocals of singer Ryan Spencer, Prussia is at the forefront of the burgeoning Michigan underground music scene. Last week, the band traveled to NYC for CMJ and performed seven times. We were fortunate to have them play at both shows we hosted this year — the NYCTaper CMJ show at Cake Shop on Thursday and the Golden Ratio / BirdDog Promo / NYCTaper show at Cameo Gallery on Saturday. Prussia played in the second slot for both shows, but the early afternoon set time did not detract from their energy or musical prowess. Behind all of the inventive experimental indie is simply five outstanding musicians. Prussia’s third release is their new album Poor English, which is available in a “name your price” format on Bandcamp. Their set included four of the new songs, two of which are streaming below.

I recorded the Cake Shop set in the same manner as all the of the recordings already posted from that day and the sound quality is superb. The Cameo Gallery recording is a mix of the Neumann microphones on a stand in front of the soundboard booth and mixed with a soundboard feed. The room is a boomier than Cake Shop, so that while the sound is quite excellent, its a very different recording from the Cake Shop one. Enjoy both!
