Widowspeak: October 20, 2011 NYCTaper CMJ Show at Cake Shop – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

The curse of being anointed a CMJ “buzz band” is that everyone wants to be seen at your shows, but no one is really listening to the music. We decided to offer Widowspeak a spot on our CMJ bill back in June, after both acidjack and I had seen them perform compelling sets at different shows. They seemed like a natural fit — unpretentious and intelligent indie-rock with roots in multiple genres from multiple decades. Widowspeak makes music for music lovers. I guess its not that surprising then that ten other promoters also booked them, and every “CMJ preview” mentioned them as a “band to see”. As with every band we booked, we’ll add to that Widowspeak is also a “band to hear”. On Thursday, when they performed at the NYCTaper show at 4 pm at Cake Shop they were also scheduled to play shows at 10:30am, 8pm and 11pm that day. So we lucked into getting the band fresh, lively, and in good moods. The set is concise but clearly indicates that the band has grown in confidence and cohesion since we last saw them. We’re streaming “Puritan”, as that track had some extra jump in its step — energy that the band would need later that night.

I recorded this set in the same manner as the previous sets from this show. We boosted the vocals from the board feed a bit more in this recording and the sound is superb. Enjoy!

Surfer Blood: April 29, 2011 Bowery Ballroom – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

Since we first caught them at the Market Hotel back when they were a mostly-unknown Florida band, Surfer Blood have become a bit of an indie staple. And for good reason: Their sound is infectious, upbeat and delivered with a great attitude. After touring the hell out of their breakout debut Astro Coast, the band began writing the new material that eventually became their new EP release, Tarot Classics. Several of those songs were on display at this show, a sellout of the Bowery Ballroom, which the band co-headlined with …And You Will Know Us By the Trail of Dead (that recording here). The band were in good spirits, no doubt in awe themselves of how far they had come since a moderately-attended CMJ show less than two years before. Tarot Classics, while only a snapshot, shows that in terms of pop relevance, Surfer Blood have plenty more in the tank. That was evidenced by two followup shows at the Northside Festival, including an opening slot for Guided by Voices.

At the request of Kanine Records, we did not release any Surfer Blood recordings containing Tarot Classics material until the EP was released. We also have two outstanding matrix recordings of the band’s Northside Festival sets that we will offer in the coming days. Thanks to Kanine for their continued support of excellent music and our efforts here at NYCTaper.

Savoir Adore: October 20, 2011 NYCTaper CMJ Show at Cake Shop – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

We have in the last several months had the distinct pleasure of experiencing Savoir Adore up close in two very different settings. In June, at their semi-acoustic Vivo in Vino concert, the band was adept at paring down their instruments to perform an excellent set in an intimate setting. At Thursday at our CMJ show at Cake Shop, we saw the full band and all the trappings — Paul Hammer in particular was remarkable at switching between electronics, guitar, vocals and keys, often more than one at a time. The set consisted of three new songs and four tracks from their debut album In The Wooded Forest. We are streaming “We Talk Like Machines”, which featured gorgeous vocals from Deidre Muro. Savoir Adore are poised at this point to take it the next level. The band’s obvious talent, energy and professionalism is a sure thing, and as they finish recording their second album, we expect big things from them in 2012.

I recorded this set in the same manner at the two previous recordings posted from this show and the sound quality is superb.

Smashing Pumpkins: October 18, 2011 Terminal 5 – FLAC/MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

For me, the hobby of live recording at concerts has one origin; the Smashing Pumpkins. It was in 2000 and the band was on their final world tour when I was drawn into this hobby. The band, still mired in the politics of a big recording label, did not openly allow taping, but those that were interested were just an internet search away from immersion into a community of passionate fans who were taping, trading and archiving recordings.

Since the band’s humble beginnings in Chicago, Billy Corgan was receptive towards live recordings and the community often saw ‘leaked’ analog cassettes from the archives. (Mashed Potatoes, anyone?) It was through these tapes that I was drawn to the beauty of live recordings, experiencing the energy and passion of a show I could not attend, or creating a permanent memory of those I could. Fortunately for the taping community, in 2003, Billy Corgan instituted an open taping policy with his side project Zwan and legions of fans could finally – and legally – document their performances.

Though the only remaining original member of the band is Corgan, this open taping policy has remained constant and is exposing new fans to their huge catalog of music while showcasing the talent of their three new members, guitarist Jeff Schroeder, bassist Nicole Fiorentino, and 21-year-old Mike Byrne on drums. But regardless of the lineup changes, the music remains as powerful as ever, selling out venues and enthralling crowds worldwide.

The NYCTaper crew caught the Smashing Pumpkins on tour at Terminal 5 this week and they did NOT disappoint. Indeed, their performance was a mind-blowing mix of new material from their forthcoming album, Oceania, with sprinklings of hardcore fan favorites from Gish, Siamese Dream, Pisces Iscariot, Mellon Collie, and Adore. We recorded this show with multiple rigs clamped to an ideal spot above the soundboard, and the house mix was as good as any of us had ever heard at Terminal 5. Thanks to the electric performance of the band and the crazy high energy of the crowd, the results of our recordings were nothing short of fantastic.

In honor of JFCB who sent us a 4AM email (he just couldn’t stop listening!), we are streaming two of his favorites from the show:

Oberhofer: October 1, 2011 Monster Island Farewell BBQ – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

October 19, 2011
By

[photo by Chris Becker courtesy of Impose Magazine]

On a rainy and dreary October day, with Monster Island padlocked behind it, River Avenue became the makeshift concert spot for a bittersweet celebration of seven years of perhaps the best DIY shows that Brooklyn has ever seen. Monster Island Basement was a venue that we visited often, and recorded everything we saw there. The excellent performances we experienced litter this site. We also presented a show there in the Spring of 2009. As he has for its entire seven year existence, the ubiquitous presence of ToddP was the first person we saw when we turned onto River Avenue that morning to record the entire event. Per his tradition, the ToddP Acoustic BBQ is a neverending parade of local DIY talent who perform brief ten minute sets. On this day, it was 36 bands, with everyone from the electronic noise of openers White Sun, to the slide-blues of Ezekial Healy, the poetry of Eliza and Parry, the folk of Katie Eastburn, the spoken word performance by DJ Dog Dick, and a million other genres. We recorded 29 acts, as the persistent rains brought the action inside for periods of time. Of those acts, perhaps the most impressive was the kinetic energy of Oberhofer, whose 3-song set was both entertaining and engaging for the obvious talent that Brad Oberhofer projects. In a raw acoustic setting without the benefit of the bells and whistles of sound effects, the artist and their talent stand naked. In that setting Oberhofer shined performing three songs — including two of his own compositions and a tongue in cheek cover of Kanye West.

This show was the most difficult circumstances under which I’ve ever recorded. The weather was an issue all day, and the “stage” was continually shifted, so that we were left with having the pick up the microphone stand and move it often. For this particular set, the artist remained in one location (you can see our microphones in the photo) and played at a decent acoustic volume. As a result, although you can hear some wind noise, the overall sound quality is quite excellent. Enjoy!

Eternal Tapestry: October 14, 2011 Glasslands – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

October 18, 2011
By

Portland’s Eternal Tapestry brought their heavy left coast psych rock to Glasslands this past Friday night, performing three long-form compositions of their densely layered guitar, bass, and saxophone (an instrument that seems to be making a big comeback lately!). The first two numbers came from the band’s latest record, Beyond the 4th Door, but the final track, “Doing Your Own Being”, was my personal highlight. With its eastern-inflected sax melody, the song is not only compelling, but rare. Released only on the very-limited-edition box set, Not the Spaces You Know, But Between Them on North Carolina imprint Three Lobed Recordings, this was likely many audience members’ first exposure to this incredible tune. Eternal Tapestry have reportedly made several records by essentially culling down live in-studio sessions, so unsurprisingly, the actual live show is a thing of beauty, as the band reworks and expands upon their songs on the fly. They don’t make it out east as often as we would like, so don’t miss them on the next go round.

I recorded this set with the DPA microphones mixed with an excellent board feed from Josh at Glasslands. As usual for this venue, the sound is excellent!

Real Estate: October 15, 2011 Bohemian Beer Garden – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

October 18, 2011
By

[blurry blackberry photo by nyctaper]

The new album from Real Estate is officially released today. Days is the first album for the band on their new label Domino — and this seems to be the perfect match between a label for music aficionados and a band who have melded a plethora of musical influences into a deceptively simple laid-back suburban indie sound. At the Bohemian Beer Hall in Astoria on Saturday, Real Estate began their CD release show by performing Days straight through, as they had done at 285 Kent in June. But midway through the set, at the conclusion of “Side A”, the band really threw us a curveball — a cover of Felt’s “Sunlight Bathed The Golden Glow” (streaming below) that was as faithful to the original as much as it sounded like a Real Estate song. Matt Mondanile spent some time in Europe, and seems to have developed a taste for eighties Brit alterna-pop. After the show, we spoke to Matt and their Domino rep and learned the genesis of this cover. Felt’s Lawrence had programmed a show on Domino radio that Matt had heard and spurred his interest. The show continued with “Side B”, which concluded with a jammed-out seven minute version of the album’s closing track, “All The Same” (also streaming below). Real Estate finished the show with an extended take on “Beach Comber” that also stretched to seven minutes. The band flew overseas to begin a European tour before they return to the US in November. Real Estate will play Bowery Ballroom on November 23.

I recorded this set with the Neumann microphones mounted at the soundboard about 30 feet from the stage and mixed with a soundboard feed. The show presented some challenges, as the packed crowd muffled the PA speakers that are inexplicably placed at ground level at the venue. Ultimately, some EQ and a proper post-production mix of sources has resulted in an excellent recording. Enjoy!

Shinji Masuko: October 10, 2011 Knitting Factory – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Full Show

October 17, 2011

shinji
[still from this video]

Shinji Masuko is a revered cult figure among aficionados of latter day Japanese experimental rock. Perhaps best known for his work in DMBQ, and more recently as a guitarist for Boredoms, Masuko is a renaissance man of the scene, also making a huge contribution in music journalism. He was also instrumental in raising money for Japanese musicians who were victims of the tsunami, an effort in which Oneida and NYCTaper participated. It was a rare treat for us stateside to get to see Masuko in a “solo” (with a bassist, whose name I regretfully do not know) performance at the Knitting Factory, where he played a complex guitar-based piece that referenced Japanoise, psychedelia, and Japanese folk and tribal music. A rapt crowd of music fans stood in awe of a piece that in some ways echoed Boredoms’ “Boadrum” pieces without the drummers. Masuko has also put out a recent set of compositions, Woven Music, on Brah Records, which is a can’t miss for fans of psychedelic guitar work.

I recorded this set with the AKG large-diaphragm microphones and a nicely balanced soundboard feed from the Knitting Factory team. There is a bit of DI hum on the board feed in quiet parts, but the recording is overall outstanding. You can stream the entire performance below, along with the usual downloads. Enjoy!

The Rosebuds: October 12, 2011 Bowery Ballroom – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

The Rosebuds superb new album was released in June and chronicles the period after band leaders Kelly Crisp and Ivan Howard had divorced in 2009. Loud Planes Fly Low is an album of intelligence and maturity — the resolution of personal difficulties within a professional relationship, the “divorce” album has sadly become a staple of rock music. At Bowery Ballroom on Wednesday night, the Rosebuds performed much of Loud Planes as a tight and cohesive unit. The touring band currently includes talented multi-instrumentalist Daniel Hart, whose skills in other settings we have previous experienced (here and here). Of the seven new songs performed, we were particularly impressed with the poignancy of the dirge-like “Second Bird of Paradise” and the energy of show-stopper “Woods”, both of which are streaming below. The Rosebuds current tour comes to a close with several southern dates this coming week.

The Mekons: October 9, 2011 City Winery – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

October 15, 2011
By

The Mekons played two local shows this past week, and while we were not able to attend either (as we did in 2007 and again in 2009), friend of the site and occasional contributor neild was in the house.
He reports:

“To say that a Mekons performance is an odd one would seem to be redundant: For a band that has donned cowboy shirts and performed Hank Williams covers for 1980s punk crowds, collaborated with Kathy Acker on an album about lesbian pirates and Vito Acconci on a performance piece that involved playing one song for 45 minutes behind movable curtains, and recorded songs from their own show-in-progress on a cassette recorder and auctioned them off to audience members as “MeTunes,” odd is pretty much expected.

That said, this was an odd Mekons show. First off, it was at City Winery, where the upscale decor made for an unusual setting for a bunch of art-punk veterans. (They’d played a more traditional show at Brooklyn’s Bell House the night before, as part of a one-week US tour in support of their new record Ancient & Modern: 1911-2011) Secondly, this was billed as an “acoustic” show, though it would have been more accurately termed “sit-down”: All eight Mekons (vocalist/guitarist/lead quipster Jon Langford, vocalist/foil Sally Timms, vocalist/accordionist Rico Bell, bassist Sarah Corina, vocalist/guitarist Tom Greenhalgh, drummer Steve Goulding, violinist Susie Honeyman, and vocalist/saz player Lu Edmonds) were arrayed across the stage in chairs – Goulding sat on a cajon drum box in place of his standard kit – with one member or another occasionally arising to take the center stage mic.

Finally, Ancient & Modern is an odd record even by Mekons standards. The theme is Edwardian England during the run-up to the First World War, a time of accelerated technological achievements, concentrations of wealth, war, and terrorism concerns. (Two songs on the new album, “Space In Your Face” and “Arthur’s Angel,” [streaming below] name-check the 1910 bombing of the L.A. Times building and the World War I Angels of Mons legend, respectively — look ’em up on Wikipedia if you’ve never heard of them.) The music, meanwhile, runs the gamut of Mekons genres, from straight-ahead three-chord rock (“Space In Your Face”) to spare old-timey piano ballads (“I Fall Asleep”) to one song, “Geeshie,” that was apparently inspired by an obscure 1930s Geeshie Wiley record and then took off in a Mekonesque direction.

For the longtime Mekons fans in the crowd, the highlight of the evening was the return of band co-founder Greenhalgh to the US for the first time in four years. Greenhalgh sported a very Edwardian moustache and a tan suit that made him look as if he should be sipping sherry at the Explorer’s Club. As for the show, the “acoustic” setting didn’t much change either the song selection or the volume levels: Moments of pure wall-of-noise multi-throated sing-alongs (“Hard to Be Human,” “Curse of the Mekons”) alternated with aching beauty (the Timms-sung live rarities “Waltz” and “Learning to Live On Your Own” in particular), and were interspersed with the usual Mekons banter that has at times made them almost as appealing as an improv comedy act as a rock band.

The show was recorded with Core-Sound binaural mics on an iRiver 320 outfitted with Rockbox and a Microphone Madness battery box with bass rolloff applied. The recorder was right in the thick of the crowd, just left of center about 25 feet back from the crowd, so you’ll hear the occasional audience comments – but then, that’s only appropriate for a Mekons show, too.”
