Pile: April 7, 2017 Sunnyvale

“Thank God for Pile”—if you listen closely, you’ll hear one zealous audience member with an enthusiasm you don’t often see for such a young band. But people really love Pile—and everyone in-the-know knows Pile are damn great. Their comparatively small but dedicated following gets bigger with each album and I daresay if you missed out on Pile this time around, I’m afraid you’ve missed the last of their shows in a small room.

On Friday, we squeezed ourselves into a packed Sunnyvale for the band’s second of two sold-out Brooklyn shows (the first was at Baby’s All Right). The thing about bands on Exploding in Sound Records is that where there’s one there’s bound to be more. Pile headlined a stacked bill featuring some current and future EIS greats: Gnarwhal, Big Ups, and Stove. Their set gets cut a bit short due to time constraints, but that only served to increase the intensity as their finale of “Rock and Roll Forever With the Customer in Mind” will attest. That tune is from 2015’s You’re Better Than This, while the rest of the set is comprised of songs off their latest album, A Hairshirt of Purpose, and their first EIS record, Dripping. Whether you’re new to the band or a longtime fan, listen to this cracking performance and be thankful for Pile.

Bardo Pond: April 1, 2017 Knockdown Center

It was heartening to see The New York Times give such prominent billing to this Bardo Pond show, held at Maspeth’s somewhat-remote but welcoming Knockdown Center this past weekend. If the use of the phrase “noise rock” to describe the band was reductive in extremis, it at least got at the notion that Bardo Pond shows are loud, distortion-drenched, hallucinatory affairs. But give a listen to Under the Pines, which the band played in full at this show to celebrate its release, and vocalist Isobel Sollenberger features more prominently for much of this journey, at least compared to past pairing with the Gibbons brothers and Clint Takeda’s guitar attack. A vocalist is almost always a critical component of a band’s sound, of course, but it feels like Sollenberger is a more confident and featured presence than she’s been at any time in their long career.

We first saw many of these songs at the Three Lobed Sweet Sixteen show we recorded last year, and again at Union Pool in November, and they’ve only gotten sharper and better since. This full-album run through told the album’s story well, demonstrating both its cohesive flow and the diversity of sounds. “My Eyes Out” continues to be one of the more “pretty” songs in the catalog, while “Moment to Moment” continues to establish itself as one of the band’s most vital new long-form songs. In a rare treat (at least, not seen by us since the 2011 Death By Audio show), this set wrapped with the vital combo of “Don’t Know About You” directly into “The Stars Behind.” There’s no new tour information for the band yet, but expect a fun one once they return to the road.

I recorded this set about 10 feet from the left PA stack with Schoeps MK41V microphones and a soundboard feed. The characteristics of the room and the sound being amplified through the stacks (mostly vocals) mean the vocals are a bit more prominent in this recording than would be optimal. Nonetheless, it is an enjoyable listen!

In my not so humble opinion, Lambchop’s FLOTUS was the best album of 2016. In a similar regard, “In Care of 8675309” is the best song released this decade. What makes it more remarkable is that the album represents for Kurt Wagner a stylistic pivot from a twenty-five year career of eclectic americana. For FLOTUS, Wagner used modern technology juxtaposed with his intimate lyrics to create a masterpiece about the maintenance of an interpersonal connection in a world increasingly enslaved to machines.

We were fortunate to capture the live debut of the FLOTUS material at Hopscotch in September. Since that time Lambchop has toured the world and performed this material more than fifty times in a live setting, so that by the time they arrived at Bowery Ballroom last Friday, we were excited for the development of the songs. Our expectations were met early in the proceedings when Wagner sweetly crooned a subdued version of “NIV” that blended seamlessly into a guitar-driven truncated version of “The Hustle” that was transformed from the hypnotic electronic bifurcated melody on the album to a more unified alt-folk ballad live. “8675309” was placed in the middle of the set but Wagner’s intense vocal performance of the epic number was perhaps the highlight of the evening. The band’s setlist included a handful of older numbers and one cover, but this night was dedicated to FLOTUS and sans the title track, the album was nearly completely performed. The keyboardist Tony Crow provided several ace solos (and some hilarious banter) and the band also includes veteran bassist Matt Swanson and Wye Oak’s percussionist/electronic wiz Andy Stack, whose expert multitasking we’ve noted previously in this pages. But it was Wagner centerstage, and while his abundant use of vocals effects may have startled some of the old guard, the packed house was clearly on board for the FLOTUS sound and hovered on every note. Lambchop’s current tour comes to a close in the next few weeks, and they’re going back to Europe in the Summer festival season, but we expect that they will return to NYC in the Fall.

I recorded this set with the Schoeps mounted in our usual balcony spot and mixed with a flawless soundboard feed. The crowd’s great respect for this performer and this material permitted us to capture the often quiet moments of this set without distraction and as a result the sound quality of this recording is superb. Teenage Fanclub: March 27, 2017 Warsaw Brooklyn

We approached the return of Teenage Fanclub this past Fall with much optimism and we were rewarded with a superb new album and an outstanding show in October at Bowery Ballroom. The band has aged well — in particular the harmonies and songwriting remain top notch three decades into their career. Six months later, Teenage Fanclub has toured the world and as this phase of their career comes to a close, the band played Brooklyn last Monday as the final night of the tour. The success of this year’s work was evident in the size of the venue — from a 500 ticket Bowery show in October that sold out on the day of the show to a 1000 capacity Warsaw that was packed

At Warsaw, the Fannies were in a relaxed and playful mood and the band’s interaction with the large crowd was frequent. Norman Blake spoke frankly about the band’s previous night’s end-of-tour party, but if the players were feeling the effects it did not show in the performance which was as tight and focused as expected. The band took a request from a fan who had brought a sign asking for “Going Places” and the band took a brief break to work through the song before performing it. The setlist was varied from the October show and included a few tracks not played back then, including a tribute to the late Grant McLennan. After a four-song encore set, the band waved goodbye but given the success of this most recent reunion, we don’t expect it will be long before Teenage Fanclub returns.

I recorded this set with the Hypercards mounted back at the soundboard and mixed with an excellent feed. The sound quality is superb. Enjoy!

Tortoise: March 16, 2017 Hall at MP

Seeing Tortoise is one thing. Seeing them up close, watching the synchronous drumming, the members swapping instruments song to song, playing in perfect time, is really seeing Tortoise. This was far from my first time with them, but it was my first time at the distance you see above, and it was incredible. Still on a high from last year’s The Catastrophist, the band felt less bound this time around to showcase those songs, instead delving back particularly hard into their landmark album TNT, among other corners of their catalog.

The Hall at MP, a relatively new below-ground venue paired with a Michael Psilakis restaurant up top, proved a good venue for these guys, with a broad stage that could accommodate all those instrument changes. One notable change toward the end of the set was a guest appearance by Yo La Tengo’s Georgia Hubley, who joined the band for “Yonder Blue,” the song on which she provided vocals for The Catastrophist.

In terms of the rest of the set, what constituted a “highlight” probably had as much to do with your introduction to the band and the set list of the last show you saw than the actual quality of the music, all of which was high. As Eric noted in his review of the previous night’s show, this band has been a gateway drug of sorts for many of us who grew into independent music that went beyond verse-chorus-verse, guitar-and-vocal sounds. What’s so notable about Tortoise is that they’ve probably kept doing that for so, so many more over the ensuing years.

I recorded this set with a soundboard feed of Tortoise engineer Elliott Dicks’ mix, coupled with Schoeps MK5 cardioid microphones in “X-Y” position onstage. The sound quality is truly outstanding. Enjoy!

Tortoise: March 15, 2017 (Le) Poisson Rouge

Almost exactly a year since we last saw Tortoise, the band rolled back into town for a two-night stand at (le) Poisson Rouge and the Hall at MP. The great thing about seeing Tortoise—and it’s why I come back year after year—is that they’ve got such a vast catalog that there’s always new material to hear along with a revolving cast of deep cuts the band brings out on tour. Like last year’s setlist, this one from (le) Poisson Rouge airs a batch of newer songs off last year’s The Catastrophist, including the title track, “Hot Coffee,” “Shake Hands With Danger,” and again brings out Georgia Hubley to sing on “Yonder Blue.” Adding a few songs we hadn’t heard last year like “Ten-Day Interval,” “Crest,” and “Dot/Eyes,” the band also goes super-deep with “Tin Cans & Twine” from the very first Tortoise album.

I recorded this set with the AKG hypercards clamped in front of the soundboard, combined with a board feed courtesy of the LPR crew. The sound quality is outstanding. Enjoy!

Sunn O))): March 17, 2017 Knockdown Center

The visceral experience of seeing Sunn O))) is not readily expressible in words so I’m going to be brief. It’s two days later now, my ears still ringing despite the hearing protection. The Knockdown Center shook and rattled and groaned but contrary to its name was still standing after two hours of Sunn O))) doing their best to reduce it rubble with their low frequency assault. The four songs here are presented as a continuous piece. They have titles that I’m sadly not deft enough to know, though the second is “Aghartha” from Monoliths & Dimensions. No recording could do this experience justice but maximum volume will get you partway there.

I recorded this with the mics run high, set up at the soundboard. The results are stunning. Enjoy!

A Place to Bury Strangers: March 3, 2017 Villain

Two years on from their tour de force performance at Music Hall of Williamsburg and the release of their last album, Transfixiation, A Place to Bury Strangers found themselves at the faux-DIY venue Villain doing what they’ve done best in years past, while looking also to the future. If the controlled chaos of set opener “We’ve Come So Far” took on a different meaning in 2017, it also felt like it took on a greater one. APTBS vets know what to expect from their shows at this point — a blanket of noise anchored by Oliver Ackermann’s guitars (his expertise in pedals comes in handy), almost always at maximum intensity, a delightfully disorienting light show — and their Brooklyn shows reflect the communal vibe among those people.

As it has been a couple years since their last record (though they did just release a new song), I was unfamiliar with several of the (what I think were new) songs played, but the distinction for most of us was minimal. An APTBS show is less about this or that song than the overall experience, the subtle shifts in texture and tempo, the often-dark lyrics that you at-times strain to hear, the relentlessness of Ackermann (in particular) onstage, as he smashes the hell out of his guitar long before the end of the set. Where the last APTBS show found the band playing on the Music Hall floor, this time the band took advantage of Villain’s layout and performed a more electronic-driven closing sequence of four songs from the balcony. When the beats finally stopped, you couldn’t help but feel a little bit lighter, a bit freer. At some point “cathartic” might start to feel like an overused term in these times, but in these first months, it’s still a very accurate one.

Robyn Hitchcock (with Yo La Tengo): March 1, 2017 Bowery Ballroom

The night after Robyn Hitchcock’s very memorable Rough Trade show, the performer and backing band performed in Manhattan for what proved to be an entirely different experience from the the previous show. Aside from the fact that the venue is twice the capacity than in Brooklyn, a sold-out show at Bowery Ballroom tends to have a discernible buzz and an energetic crowd. And for this particular special event, many long-time fans and some industry folk were in attendance and let their voices be heard.

As a full album two-set show, it was in the second set where this night diverged from the previous show. After a set of Black Snake Diamond Role in which Robyn bantered more and dealt with some vocal microphone issues, the band returned for a second set that mixed it up quite a bit from the Rough Trade show. At Bowery we got a mini quiet set with “I Often Dream of Trains” as the highlight, a chugging version of Dylan’s “Obviously Five Believers” and a pretty rare Love cover in the encore set. These two nights of prime Robyn Hitchcock and band playing at the peak of their skills were best-of-year quality shows and I expect we will be revisiting them often.

I recorded this set with the Schoeps mounted next to the soundboard booth in the front of the balcony. The sound in the venue was again outstanding and other then some crowd rowdiness, this is another superb recording. Enjoy!

Robyn Hitchcock (with Yo La Tengo): February 28, 2017 Rough Trade Brooklyn

It was twenty years ago this month that I recorded Robyn Hitchcock at the old Knitting Factory on Leonard Street from the first row of the balcony when that venue still had seats upstairs. That recording has for years been one of my favorite Robyn recordings in large part because the banter is both hilarious and sublime in his very unique stream-of-consciousness manner. I saw Robyn Hitchcock many times in that era, mostly as a solo performer sometimes accompanied by the great Deni Bonet. It wasn’t until a decade later that I saw Robyn with a full band — that 2007 tour featured the Venue 3 (Peter Buck, Scott McCaughey, Bill Rieflin) — in the very same Leonard Street spot. The two shows were entirely different musical experiences and proved the versatility of this prolific performer.

It took another decade, and a completely different full band for me to experience Robyn again. This time it was in a two-set affair with the first session featuring a complete performance of his first solo album Black Snake Diamond Röle and a second act consisting of rare tracks, covers and a few familiar standards extending all the way back to the 1970s Soft Boys period. At Rough Trade on Tuesday night, the Brit ex-pat was less interested in monologues and more focused on the songs — many of which had not been performed in years and perhaps decades. The result was a stunning display of musical dexterity and proof positive that Hitchcock is perhaps the most overlooked living genius of the last half-century of modern music. The second set highlights included Robyn’s tribute to his Soft Boys bandmate Kimberly Rew in the performance of “Goin Down to Liverpool” and the a spot-on version of mega-influence Syd Barrett in Pink Floyd’s first album stand-out “Lucifer Sam”.

I recorded this set with the Schoeps mounted centered inside the soundboard booth. This straight audience recording accentuates the superb room mix of one the best FOH pros in the business, Mark Luecke, and the credit for the superb sound goes directly to him. This is truly one of the best audience recordings we’ve ever featured on this site. Enjoy!
