Everyone ought to pause once or more at a festival full of big, bombastic noisy bands to revel in the simple beauty of a solo player who is expert at his instrument. Such was the case for those lucky enough to witness Cian Nugent‘s performance at the Fletcher Opera Theater during Hopscotch Music Festival, where the Irish guitarist wowed a pin-drop quiet crowd eagerly anticipating a rare U.S. show. Like virtually every solo acoustic guitar player, Nugent earns comparisons to masters like John Fahey, but the combination of the influence of his home country and the American heartland gives Nugent’s compositions a different flavor than the work of U.S. contemporaries like Danny Paul Grody or Daniel Bachman. Those craving some electric non-solo Nugent would be wise to check out the Desert Heat (Nugent, Steve Gunn, John Truscinski and Jason Meagher) set we posted here, as well as his outstanding upcoming release on Brooklyn label No Quarter, Born With the Caul, which you can pre-order now.

This set was recorded by North Carolina taper Larry Tucker with Peluso cardiod microphones, and the sound is quite good. Enjoy!

As you probably well know, the 6th Annual NYCTaper CMJ Day Party is taking place tomorrow afternoon at Cake Shop. We announced the show a few weeks ago in a post [here], but there’s plenty of exciting late-developing announcements today!

school of night

Firstly, we’ve officially announced the artist who had previously been tagged as “special guest”. Its our old friend Darby Cicci of the Antlers, whose new solo project School Of Night was released this month and he’s been gathering tons of rave reviews. You can stream the School of Night album [here], and check out a new video for the song “Fire Escape” [here].

Secondly, we’ve added Dead Stars to the bill. They will play at 3pm. Bent Shapes who were originally scheduled to play at 3pm have been called back to Boston on a work emergency and had to cancel. Dead Stars were on NYCTaper a few weeks ago, when their impressive set at Glasslands wowed us. Stream a track from that show below:

Thirdly, Julia Weldon, who will play our show at 3:45 (in the middle of Dead Stars at School of Night) just released a new video for her song “Careful in the Dark” and it premiered on the front page of the Village Voice web site [HERE]. Julia was on NYCTaper back in July [here].

Oh yeah, finally, that FREE BEER thing. This show is exclusively sponsored by the amazing Six Point Brewery, right over the bridge in Red Hook. We’ll have FREE cans of Six Point beginning at 1pm, while supplies last. Come early, drink often.

Minks: August 31, 2013 Captured Tracks CT5 Festival – Flac/MP3/Streaming

In their brief history, Minks has been the quintessential Captured Tracks band. Their debut album By The Hedge was shrouded in mystery — not much was known about the artist and the lyrics were often hidden in deep reverb. Minks also didn’t play many shows. And of course the sound was heavily influenced by the early to mid-80s Brit post-punk. This year Minks has returned with their second album and the band has most certainly evolved. Tides End is a significantly warmer album than the band’s debut, and Minks have taken a higher profile in support for the album. Band leader Sonny Kilfoyle has even done a series of interviews. At the CT5 Fest in August, Minks set was certainly upbeat, as Kilfoyle bantered good naturedly between tracks and the band worked through an excellent set of material from both albums. We’re streaming “Doomed and Cool” which certainly captures a definable New Order influence to the band’s sound and was one of the tightest tracks performed. Minks will play NYC again at Mercury Lounge on November 21.

I recorded this set in the same manner as the two previous sets from this Fest and the sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Thanks to Hurricane Sandy, the first time we saw Katie Crutchfield as Waxahatchee, she had to perform an impromptu solo set. Even then, we were impressed by the clarity of her songwriting and the conviction with which she sings. Not long after, her latest record for Don GiovanniCerulean Salt became a critics’ favorite.

This Waxahatchee show, at the Hopscotch Music Festival, gave a more complete picture of what Crutchfield can do. Kicking off with a  song from her other project Great Thunder, Crutchfield led us through a quick mini-tour of the Waxahatchee canon, including renditions of some of the songs from Cerulean Salt and its predecessor American Weekend that more clearly evoked Crutchfield’s punk roots. “Noccalula”, streaming below, was completely transformed from the ultra-lo-fi analog recording from American Weekend; likewise, Cerulean Salt numbers like “Lively” were a good bit less subdued at high volume. But it’s still the set closer, “You’re Damaged”, that clinches everything great about Waxahatchee. Touching without being cloying and catchy as hell, it’s the strongest testament yet to Crutchfield’s songwriting, and one we were thrilled to see, finally, with a full band.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK41 microphones and a Sound Devices preamp to give extra clarity, with assistance from my man Dan Schram. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Birds of Maya: September 7, 2013 Paradise of Bachelors / WXYC Day Show, Hopscotch Music Festival (Raleigh, NC) – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

If certain people are to be believed, Birds of Maya is the best rock n’ roll band in Philadelphia. Which, considering how essential that city’s rock tradition has been to the genre in the last few years, is saying a hell of a lot. In recent years, acts like Purling Hiss (the newer vehicle of BoM’s Mike Polizze) and Spacin’ have gotten a lot of the ink, but Birds of Maya is what started it all. After killer sets from fellow Philadelphians Spacin’ and Chris Forsyth earlier in the day at the Paradise of Bachelors / WXYC day show during Hopscotch Music Festival, it was only fitting that the day ended with the BoM mothership blasting us off to 1969 with some epically heavy chooglin’. Rarely bothering with such studio niceties as polished production and carefully laid out song titles, Birds of Maya’s official releases soar on the pure adrenaline of monster riffs made with total commitment and no bad attitudes. Ready to Howl, for example, is a double LP consisting of three songs – “Friday”, “Saturday” and “Sunday”. That’s how they roll.

All of that made BoM an ideal coda to a perfect weekend outdoor show, as the band roared through four epic-length tracks. That old Spinal Tap line about cranking your amps to 11 isn’t, it turns out, a figure of speech — Birds of Maya pushed out enough onstage volume that the amps seethed with fuzz. This set of continuous music brought all the heat of the band’s LPs, with the spontaneity and good vibes of the live setting to boot. Just listen to “E.O.I.”, streaming below, to get an idea of how it felt to see these guys in action.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK4V microphones and a soundboard feed. As noted, BoM’s amps were cranked, causing the board feed to distort a little. So, this sounds similar to a Birds of Maya album — loud, fuzzy and raw. It’s a thing of beauty. Enjoy!

Drug Yacht: September 7, 2013 Hopscotch Music Festival, Slim’s (Raleigh, NC) – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

This year’s Hopscotch Music Festival put an exclamation point on the return of beloved Durham, NC based heavy math-rockers Drug Yacht. Friend of the site David Schwentker was there to capture the band in all their glory at the festival’s favorite dive, Slim’s, and the Yacht didn’t disappoint. Though the band began in 1997, they had played barely a dozen shows, as the members floated amongst a number of other well-liked local projects. They reunited to play shows again in 2012 and followed that up with this year’s slick new EP, Way Up Firm and High. Starting with the breakneck intensity of the EP’s “Feel The Teal”, the trio didn’t slow down for 34 hard-charging, sweaty minutes. Here’s to hoping these guys are back for good!

This set was recorded by Mr. Schwentker with Church Audio CA-1 microphones mounted in the ceiling by yours truly and Dan Schram. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!
