Mike Doughty: March 1, 2014 City Winery – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

No matter how many times I see Mike Doughty in a year, he’s always got some kind of a new twist. Whether an epic two-plus hours of him breaking out Soul Coughing classics solo acoustic at City Winery, or his full-on all-Soul Coughing full-band set at Webster Hall, Doughty comes up with new ways to keep his loyal fan base interest. This City Winery performance reprised another of Doughty’s fan favorites, the “Question Jar”, which is more or less what it sounds like. Doughty plays some tunes, then he answers questions fans placed in a jar. Beyond learning Doughty’s tastes in ice cream toppings and Beatles, though, what we got here was another hour and a half of Doughty at his best, this time backed by cellist Andrew “Scrap” Livingston, who added depth to songs like “Looking At the Bottom of A Well” from Haughty Melodic. 

A few Soul Coughing tunes were on the menu this time — probably that band’s two best-known hits, “Circles” and “Super Bon Bon” — but most of the show was dedicated to Doughty’s solo oeuvre. Some of those other highlights included “White Lexus”, “Down On the River By the Sugar Plant” and the night’s somewhat-unintentional highlight, “Busting Up A Starbucks”. Doughty’s a good-natured guy, but as we have seen in the past, he isn’t afraid to call out disrespectful fans, which he did mid-song. For the rest of us who were paying attention, it was pure comedy. I’m not sure when Doughty will come this way next, but when he does, I suspect he’ll have more tricks up his sleeve.

This recording is a straight soundboard feed, which makes sense given the relatively quite nature of the material. Engineer Patrick’s house mix is outstanding. Enjoy!

Cian Nugent: February 19, 2014 Union Pool – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

I first saw Cian Nugent live last September at Hopscotch Music Festival, where we had the pleasure of seeing multiple sides of him both as a solo artist and with his “supergroup” Desert Heat. To date, the Irish guitarist hasn’t played regularly in the U.S., so there was no way I was going to miss him supporting fantastic new album at Union Pool. Here, the faithful were rewarded with Nugent working through solo versions of several standout tracks from his latest, Born With The Caul, as well as material from the seven inch release “Hire Purchase”, the only electric number of the night. The Wednesday night crowd rewarded Cian’s focus and concentration with an ample amount of their own, turning this sometimes-raucous room into a reverent space. With any luck, the reception from this tour will bring Nugent back to New York more frequently. This great artist’s catalog has much more ground to cover, as Pitchfork so presciently observed in a Marc Masters/Grayson Currin “Out Door” post recently.

I recorded this set with a soundboard feed provided by Union Pool’s head engineer Ian MacCarthy, together with Schoeps MK41 microphones to provide mild room ambiance. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

The Black Crowes: October 19, 2013 The Capitol Theatre – FLAC / MP3 / Streaming Songs (Two Sources)

If there are two things that can be said about The Black Crowes’ live shows it’s that they’re consistent and damn good.  Being a fan since their first album, I can attest to having seen more than my fair share of BC concerts that have stuck in my memory and been added to my personal “best of” list.  Their acoustic shows, however, have been few and far between and I relish them like the rare fruits they are.  In addition to hearing old favorites in new arrangements that translate beautifully from the electric counterparts, I’ve noticed that the gents seem to take more risks and extend their collective reach a bit when playing these “unplugged” gigs.  The recent four-date run at The Capitol Theatre was certainly no exception.  With their vast catalog of original tracks and mining some deep and obscure material from the likes of Crazy Horse, The Flying Burrito Brothers and Pink Floyd, there were distinct surprises to be had on this evening.  The band itself had also expanded with performers Larry Campbell, Sam Bush and Joe Russo joining the group for the night, as well as Neal Casal and John Fullbright jumping in for the encore.  Between the added instrumentation, new songs and solid chops on display, the Crowes continue to be a potent live experience.

Set up in the taper’s section behind the soundboard at The Capitol Theatre, we were able to pull great recordings, albeit with a little more crowd noise than we like during some of the quieter songs.  As a result, we are offering both of our excellent quality sources for download: my Milab VM-44 Link cardioids and acidjack’s Schoeps MK41 supercardioids paired with his warm Aerco MP-2 preamp.  Enjoy!

The Black Crowes will be playing a series of electric shows at Terminal 5 beginning tonight.  We will be recording at least one of them and posting it next week.

Lucius: July 14, 2012 Backyard Brunch Sessions – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

“The duo of talented vocalists that make up the band Lucius joined us for the inaugural Backyard Brunch Session of the season recently, and proceeded to blow us away. Holly Laessig and Jess Wolfe’s note-perfect vocals were as well matched as their outfits at this casual backyard show, which consisted primarily of their 2012 self-titled EP plus some new songs. In BBS tradition, the duo were backed by lightly-played instrumentation, but little was needed; Laessig and Wolfe’s voices are the only instruments required. Their latest work is sweet and dreamy, but never comes off as twee. The band has range as well; the new “Two Of Us” has a bit of a rootsy twang, while the new “Wildewoman” is a spare, breezy number that builds to a life-affirming climax. “Turn it Around,” the hardest rocking song from the Lucius EP, closed the set, and the semi-acoustic setup focused the crowd on the vocal, rather than robbing the song of its power.  With only one full album – 2009’s Songs from the Bromley House – under their belts, Lucius are a young band, but one that is obviously full of promise.

hi and lo recorded this set with a combination of Schoeps and MBHO microphones and the weather was fortunately cooperative. Only some very minor wind gusts occurred and the overall sound is excellent. Enjoy!”

Prairie Empire: July 14, 2012 Backyard Brunch Sessions – FLAC/MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

If the true measure of a band’s abilities is how well they play live, you could say it is doubly a measure of their talents how well they can play acoustically in someone’s back yard on a muggy July day, with planes flying overhead and bugs threatening to choke them. Prairie Empire rose to that challenge at a recent Backyard Brunch Sessions, where they gave the audience the added bonus of new material recorded after their just-released eponymous debut album. Though weary from closing out their recent tour, lead singer Brittain Ashford and her band (or at least, part of it) were in high spirits and strong form, further honed from their time on the road.  Both “Like Birds” and the brand-new “Muir Woods” gave those of us just getting acquainted with the new record even-newer material to delve into, while album tracks like “Give” have never sounded better. For a more electrified take on the band, check out our June 10th recording from Mercury Lounge, but if you are into the acoustic style, it’s also worth taking a look at the band’s recent Daytrotter session.

hi and lo recorded this set with a combination of Schoeps and MBHO microphones.  Other than a few unavoidable blasts of wind and planes flying overhead, the sound is excellent!

Olivia Tremor Control: June 15, 2012 Good Company – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

One of the benefits of presenting your own showcase at this year’s Northside Festival was access to the press/VIP lounge located at the Williamsburg bar Good Company, which was (heavily) sponsored by Jameson Black Barrel and featured ample free doses of the aforementioned spirit plus, more importantly, some rare and intimate acoustic shows. The highlight of all of them was this set by the legendary Athens, GA band Olivia Tremor Control, who are now fully back from their mid-2000s hiatus and working on their first full-length record since Black Foliage back in 1999. OTC’s presence at this year’s Northside Festival was a huge highlight for me, especially after they whetted my appetite by playing some OTC songs as part of the Elephant 6 Holiday Surprise Tour back in March (that recording [HERE]).  While the band would go on to play a proper full set at Music Hall of Williamsburg the following night, this unamplified acoustic performance on Good Company’s back patio will go down as the more unique and exclusive of the two performances. The loose backyard-type atmosphere suited a band still getting back into their groove with a series of high-profile festival shows (they have played Primavera Sound and are on their way Pitchfork). In a short half-hour set, the band hit many of their highlights, including “Define A Transparent Dream”, “California Demise” and “A Sunshine Fix”, each a pleasure to see reworked for the all-acoustic environment. OTC have released a 3-song suite on Secretly Canadian to tide us over while they record a new album, and we can’t wait to hear that new record when it’s ready!

hi and lo recorded this set with a pair of Schoeps MK5 microphones up close near the band, and the sound is excellent. Enjoy!

NYCTaper Presents: Prairie Empire Record Release Show this Sunday at Mercury Lounge

Prairie Empire is the current project of the multitalented musician and songwriter Brittain Ashford, who is another Seattle transplant to Brooklyn that we are thrilled to have in our midst. As a singer, Ashford’s voice packs incredible emotional presence and range, as well as a little pixie dust pinch of whimsy; you feel an instant kinship with her and her music even if you’ve never met her. As for her band, their lush arrangements provide a broad sonic palette for Ashford’s compositions, incorporating strings, cello, violin, viola, drums, sleigh bells, dulcimer and trumpet, not to mention vocal harmonies. No surprise, then, that no less than eight other musicians played on the band’s new record.

Fresh off a recent Daytrotter performance, Ashford and her bandmates (several of whom live in Portland, making this no small trip) are celebrating the release of their eponymous debut album on Durham, NC’s Trailer Fire Records with this very special early show at Mercury Lounge this Sunday night. Although Prairie Empire has not been on the site before, everything we know about this band suggests that they will deliver a performance with a grace and beauty that more than does justice to their new album material. Opening the show will be the singer-songwriter Jo Schornikow, another young talent that we look forward to getting to know.

The NYCTaper crew will be on hand to capture audio of this event and to celebrate Prairie Empire’s new album and future success.  We hope that you will join us!

The Lemonheads: January 11, 2012 Knitting Factory – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

As acts from the early 90s have continued to take victory laps over the past few years, I have had a chance to reflect on how different the personalities were that dominated the music scene then than those from today’s self-affirming generation making vital new music today.  In an era principally concerned with authenticity, its troubadours were often people who lived hard and felt deeply – addicts, romantics, and the generally self-destructive.  And if you wanted a picture of the archetypal musician of the era, you might consider Evan Dando of The Lemonheads (which he actually formed in ’86, but rose to stardom in the early 90s).  A soft-spoken singer whose lyrics tell tales of broken romance, addiction, and self-doubt, Dando has had his ups and downs professionally.  I last saw the band headline the 9:30 Club in Washington, DC in 1997 – the last year the band was together before going on hiatus – and they packed the place.  In fact, a little known Orlando, FL band called Matchbox 20 opened.  The next time I encountered the band, Dando was playing a show in an out of the way honky tonk near a Vermont ski resort.

Dando brought the band back in 2005 and has put out two new records, The Lemonheads and the covers album Varshons, as well as a greatest-hits collection in the UK, Laughing All the Way to the Cleaners: The Best Of.  While Dando has struggled at times on this current tour – I heard reports from other cities of shows completely falling apart due to him being too impaired to play – the quality of his music and his songwriting hasn’t wavered.  To see a Lemonheads show is to see song after song that you know, each as good as the last, each intensely, searingly personal.  Listen to “All My Life”, streaming below, and see if it hits close to home.

At this show at the Knitting Factory in Brooklyn, Dando was every bit the musician I had seen nearly 15 years ago, playing an epic show that consisted of multiple solo sets, a full run-through of The Lemonheads’ breakout album, It’s A Shame About Ray, and a second full-band set.  The show ran for an epic 105 minutes – even more impressive considering the average song length of about three minutes.  Dando delved into some of the covers from Varshons, as well as some of his other concert favorites.  Some of these covers could have been written especially for Dando; he chooses covers that tell his story as much as the orignal authors’.  As Dando continued to play a string of classics, it was hard not to yearn for the era that spawned them, when cred and emotions were a band’s currency, and musicians didn’t need car commercials to earn enough money for the booze and drugs that fueled their damaged art.

Wrapping up a set that never faltered, Dando closed with the twofer of “Rick James Style” – whose refrain “don’t wanna get high / but I don’t wanna not get high” is lent added menace by James’ eventual end – and the Angry Samoans’ “You Stupid Jerk,” a short, chaotic burst of silliness that ended this show on a happy note.  The band continues their U.S. tour westward today, and I hope fans in the Midwest don’t miss a chance to see Evan Dando back at the top of his game.

Mike Kinsella has been involved in many a highly-regarded project over the years – in particular, the Illinois native still does time in Joan of Arc with his brother Tim (our recent recording of them [HERE]), and before that, he and Tim were in Cap’n Jazz (our recent recording of them [HERE]). The man’s discography is longer than many artists twice his age – and most of it is quite good.

The latest Kinsella project to receive positive notice is his affecting solo effort, Owen, which he has been releasing albums under since 2001. Let me revise that – a lot of positive notice. I had not seen Glasslands this completely full in a long time, probably since the packed-to-the-rafters Yuck show last winter, or Bear In Heaven’s show there in 2009. Our friends at PopGun Booking knew what they were doing when they booked this for a Friday night.

Packed house or not, Kinsella made the show feel like an intimate evening in a family basement, with a freewheeling set that found him joking with the crowd during and in between songs, chatting with folks in the front row, riffing on fantasy football, hockey, airplane turbulence and (briefly) failed GOP contender Herman Cain, and making the best of some difficult technical issues. Alone onstage with his guitar (with audience members in his face on all sides), Kinsella delivered an hour’s worth of songs that were by turns melancholy, funny and whimsical, all in a trademark sweet voice that, for many of us, typifies the “emo” sound popularized in the 1990s. Even with such distractions as occasional PA buzzing and interference from Mike’s phone, his unadorned set was powerful and moving, and the crowd hung on every word. Much of his 2011 release Ghost Town was covered, but the set spanned the Owen catalog. Even Kinsella’s occasional flubs — a couple of songs ended prematurely — were greeted enthusiastically, to the point that he mocked the crowd for cheering for one aborted number. With some performers, this kind of thing could be annoying, but Kinsella is the type of amiable guy you can’t help but laugh with when things go wrong.  The show ended on that kind of note, when a massive equipment problem during the encore sent waves of static blasting through the PA. “That’s cool,” Kinsella said. “Thanks for coming guys. I’m done. It was fun. Now it’s over.” Mike smiled as he walked off, and the crowd roared its approval. It was that kind of night.

I recorded this set with a soundboard feed and Schoeps MK22 “open cardioid” microphones in the usual location I use in the venue.  After extensive post-processing to reduce or eliminate most of the sound issues (which, it should be added, were not the fault of the Glasslands house team), I am quite pleased with the quality of the recording. Thurston Moore: May 20, 2011 Music Hall of Williamsburg – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

Thurston Moore has a sweeping, almost uncontainable musical vision. He is an artist who I have personally seen, just in the past year, perform everything from a chaotic, sprawling noise collage to Sonic Youth’s classic postpunk to these, his somnolent, captivating acoustic meditations. He is in many ways the archetype of the modern New York musician to which almost anyone, in any genre, aspires, and he and his bandmates in Sonic Youth almost single-handedly revitalized and redefined the scene in the 80s and 90s. If you are trying to describe, using one person, everything that is honest and right and excellent and so very New York about modern New York rock musicians, look no further than Thurston Moore.

This Friday night show at Music Hall of Williamsburg celebrated the release of Moore’s most recent solo record, the Beck-produced Demolished Thoughts, which picks up on the quieter end of where his 2007 solo release Trees Outside the Academy left off. The set concentrated heavily on that record, as well as some songs from Trees Outside the Academy, and finished with the title track from Moore’s first proper solo outing, Psychic Hearts. While the songs in this set fall within the more conventional range of Moore’s spectrum, there was nothing banal about them, as each track demonstrated his virtuosity on the guitar – witness the back end of “Orchard Street” and his amazing consistency at writing catchy, interesting songs (“In Silver Rain With A Paper Key” being one). Moore was backed by a crack band of hyper-cool indie luminaries that included Keith Wood from Hush Arbors on guitar and John Moloney of Sunburned Hand of the Man, and they did the songs ample justice. Unlike most gigs Thurston Moore is involved in, this one never required earplugs – but it didn’t need the noise to be noticed.

I recorded this set from the left balcony of the venue with the Schoeps microphones on an extension arm pointed directly at the stacks, with tiny DPA omnidirectional microphones providing the room warmth and ambiance that usually lack from up-close recordings of this type. Both mics ran through quiet preamps that minimized hiss from this more quiet show. The results are excellent. Enjoy!
