Sharon Van Etten: December 15, 2012 Cameo Gallery – Flac/MP3/Streaming

Apparently, you can go home again. As she returned to her old haunts, Sharon Van Etten played a semi-secret show at Cameo Gallery that brought everyone in the packed room back five years to the days when she charmed small crowds at the various local venues. Zebulon is now closed, Monkeytown is long gone, and Galapagos is now Public Assembly, but the passing of time was irrelevant last night. It was the performer and her magic voice playing songs that propelled her to her current lofty status that had the room enchanted. Sharon was joined for much of the set by current band member Heather Woods Broderick, who provided beautiful harmonies. The set consisted of a nice mix of older numbers (“Consolation Prize” is streaming below), her current repertoire and some fairly obscure early numbers. But through it all Sharon proved that even though her gigs are now at venues like Town Hall and Beacon Theatre, she is still the same unassuming and modest young woman that charmed us all back then. “I miss the old days”, Sharon said late in the show. So do we.

I recorded this set with the Sennheiser cards mounted front and center of the soundboard and mixed with an excellent board feed. The quiet music on stage is subject to some of the ambient noise of the room (bottles, doors, etc), but overall the sound is excellent. Enjoy!

David Bazan (playing Pedro the Lion’s “Control”): November 15, 2012 Music Hall of Williamsburg – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

David Bazan’s 2002 album Control marked what became his second concept album as a recording artist. His first full-length effort as Pedro the Lion, 2000’s Winners Never Quit, told the story of the corruption and redemption of a politician, and was a favorite of mine at the time. Despite its intensely personal lyrics, capable songwriting and obvious ambivalence toward Christianity, a particularly agenda-laden Pitchfork review savaged the record and derisively called Bazan a “Christian rocker”. Control is a dark, brooding album that tells the tale of the dissolution of a modern marriage that ends, ultimately, in murder, the downward spiral all rendered in Bazan’s mournful tones. Control did well with critics and fans. But, ten years later, how has it worn?

David Bazan is a different artist today. His struggles with alcohol – and Christianity – are in the rearview, and as he told the crowd this night at Music Hall of Williamsburg, he is a better musician.  After abandoning the Pedro moniker in 2006, he has produced two excellent solo albums under his own name that stand in their own right. This tour was designed to promote the high-quality vinyl reissues of the Pedro the Lion catalog, including Control, and tonight found David and his band (Alex Westcoat and Andy Fitts, who play on both Bazan “solo” albums) playing each of the LP’s sides with a mix of Pedro and Bazan solo tracks sandwiched in the middle. Along with getting to enjoy Control classics like “Penetration” and “Rejoice” (introduced, to close out the set, as “a bummer”), Bazan played some other favorites mid-set, including “Eating Paper” from his latest solo record, Strange Negotiations, and “When They Really Get to Know You They Will Run” from Pedro’s first album, It’s Hard to Find A Friend.  So how did Control sound ten years on?  It may be a “bummer” emotionally, but it continues to stand as a musical success.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK41 supercardiod microphones inside the soundboard cage, with an excellent soundboard feed mixed by the band’s touring engineer Brad Lightfoot.  The sound is excellent.  Enjoy!

Rhyton: November 27, 2012 Union Pool – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

After their thrilling performance at the NYCTaper Northside Festival Showcase back in June, I couldn’t wait for Rhyton to hit Union Pool last week so I could see them perform songs from their latest, The Emerald Tablet.  Or at least, I assumed that would be the case, seeing that the record just dropped in September. But frontman/guitarist/other instrumentalist Dave Shuford, bassist Jimy Seitang and drummer Spencer Herbst aren’t the sort of musicians to “tour an album” or pause their creative process. So, instead of Emerald tracks, the band gave us a completely new pair of free-flowing compositions that are so new they only have working titles. These compositions are more of a piece stylistically with the band’s previous record, Rhyton, with a noisier, less Eastern-influenced feel than The Emerald Tablet. But, when you are dealing with a trio of improvisers like the Rhyton gang, it’s never correct to say anything is exactly like the past.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK5 cardiod microphones from the center of the balcony, augmented by a soundboard feed from the house engineer, Doug.  The sound is excellent.  Enjoy!

Magrudergrind: November 27, 2012 St. Vitus – Flac/MP3/Streaming

When our old friend unArtigNYC saw me setting up at St. Vitus on Tuesday, he gave me one of those “what are you doing here” looks. And rightfully so. The site has been to St. Vitus once, and that was acidjack’s recording of Liturgy from earlier this year. And we’ve never actually covered a real metal show. The question is really why the hell not. St. Vitus is the premiere venue for metal in NYC and its a great place — a well-equipped show room, an excellent bar and terrific staff. When I saw that New Orleans metal vets EyeHateGod were coming to Brooklyn for two shows, I figured it was time to break the ice. Good choice. This show had four excellent bands, each offering a slightly different variation on the metal theme. The third band on the bill immediately before the headliners was the Washington DC/Brooklyn grindcore trio Magrudergrind. This was a high-octane politically-themed amalgamation of speed, metal and what we used to call “hardcore” back in the day. And it was 15 songs in 22 minutes of awesome. Magrudergrind is playing again in December out in Copiague on Long Island, and after that their next official date is in 2013. See them if you can.

I recorded this set with the Sennheisers mounted very high back near the soundboard corner. The room was heavy in guitar, but when mixed with a vocal and drum heavy soundboard, the balance is just right. This is a superb recording, and we give much credit to the excellent FOH at St. Vitus. Enjoy!

METZ: November 20, 2012 Knitting Factory – Flac/MP3/Streaming

About six months ago, acidjack arranged to record METZ‘ first trip to NYC as an opener in a small venue. Unfortunately, that recording never came to fruition, but the band remembered us. Here they are a short time later signed to Sup Pop, a big hit at CMJ last month, and in NYC last week where they sold out two consecutive weekday shows. We saw the second of the two shows, at the Knitting Factory last Tuesday. And what a show it was. METZ came out with an abundant amount of energy and kept it going for the entire set. The band played virtually their entire new self-titled record, and what I believe was one new song. Their music has been described as post-punk, grunge and noise-rock, but of all their name-an-influence bands, I hear Mission of Burma the most. And of all of the post-punk trios with which to be compared, you can’t get much better than MOB. And METZ deserves it, they’re that good.

I recorded this set with the Sennheiser Cards mixed with an excellent board feed provided by Knit engineer Devin. The sound quality of this recording is superb. Enjoy!

Psychic Ills: November 9, 2012 Knitting Factory – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

The Brooklyn band Psychic Ills hit the Knitting Factory a few weeks ago along with compadres Guardian Alien (recording HERE)  and Starring (recording coming soon) in preparation for the wide-ranging tour of China they have now embarked upon. By the look and sound of things, the foursome were ready to go, as they weaved together the druggy, deep grooves they have become known for under hushed lights. The band’s most recent effort, and first for Sacred Bones, Hazed Dream, was the most-represented on this night, with the band leading off with three fifths of that record’s excellent A side, including their most “poppy” (by their standards) number, “Mind Daze”. Along with the Hazed Dream material, the other half of the set touched down at various points from the band’s back catalog, with two songs from 2006’s Dins, “Diamond City” from their 2005 Mental Violence II EP, and “Way Of” from the largely misunderstood Mirror Eye joining the band’s most recent single, “Take Me With You”, which they released on a split 7-inch with Moon Duo earlier this year. While the “psychedelic rock” genre (massively broad as it now is) usually relies upon setting a mood, the Ills take things further in that direction than most, serving up the set as a more or less unified piece of music with guitar transitions instead of stage banter, substituting their songs’ evolutions and contrasts in tone and tempo for big, room-rocking singles. Expect a new record from the Ills next year, which we hope to continue with the strong style established on Hazed Dream.

Parquet Courts: November 16, 2012 285 Kent – Flac/MP3/Streaming

Several months ago, a friend told me to keep an eye out for Parquet Courts. He had seen them at Death By Audio and was so impressed with their excellent garage-styled pop and their new album Light Up Gold, that he went out of his way to secure permission for me to record the band when I saw them live. Last week at 285 Kent, I got the chance and Parquet Courts lived up to expectations. This is a tight quartet with a strong sense of melody, rhythm and a wicked sense of humor. The songs are with one exception two-minute nuggets and in their thirty-minute show at 285, they managed to fit ten of them in the set. For what its worth, the single “Borrowed Time” received this week “best new music” at Pitchfork a couple of months too late, but evidence that the band is gaining the kind of notoriety that will make these 285 Kent nights a thing of the past. We are streaming that song below. The other obvious highlight was the set closer, a six-minute song called “Stoned and Starving” that calls to mind the vocal stylings of Jonathan Richman while referencing current Brooklyn locations in a lengthy groove. It was the perfect ending for this superb set. Parquet Courts will return to Brooklyn for a show opening for Fucked Up at Warsaw, before they head out on a Midwest tour.

I recorded this set with the Sennheiser cards mounted 10 feet from the stage and mixed with a board feed. The sound quality is limited only by the acoustics of the venue, but is otherwise excellent. Enjoy!

Widowspeak: November 3, 2012 Music Hall of Williamsburg – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

Among us, we have seen Brooklyn’s Widowspeak at least seven times in the past couple of years, including hosting them at last year’s NYCTaper CMJ Day Show. What we have seen each time is a band that keeps getting better and, most crucially, continuing to write great new songs. True to form, half of the songs played during this opening set for Woods at Music Hall of Williamsburg were new (relative to their LP), and they stood up well alongside some of the best numbers from their 2011 self-titled LP like “In the Pines”. Of the newer material, four of these songs will appear on the band’s second Captured Tracks LP, Almanac, which comes out on January 22.  I continue to be amazed at the depth added to the band’s sound by the addition of Pamela Garabano-Coolbaugh on bass, as it gives lead guitarist Robert Thomas and singer/guitarist Molly Hamilton more room to focus on their own guitar work. Sonically, Widowspeak is a moody, downbeat band, but they are clearly enjoying the ride; even if they don’t sound like it, they look like they’re having a lot of fun up there. With the band’s next NYC show scheduled for their record release date of January  22 at Mercury Lounge, we have plenty to look forward to from Widowspeak in 2013.

The Loom: September 4, 2012 Glasslands – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

If you read this site regularly, it should be pretty clear by now that we just can’t say enough good things about the Brooklyn band The Loom, who we’ve been fans of for four years now. We continue to watch this band grow, develop and change, evolving and tweaking their sound and taking their music in new directions. What has not changed over those four years is the high quality of this band’s live shows, or their kindness and generosity as performers. This year has found the Loom completing a touring cycle for their first LP, 2011’s Teeth, and charting a course toward finishing their second album, which should be out next year. While the shift is subtle, the band is seeing some evolution in their sound as they approach the new record. Where the Teeth-era material would easily locate the band in the “acoustic indie folk” realm, the band’s newest songs show the influence of some of the heavier bands they have been playing shows with, like The Phantom Family Halo. While The Loom have hardly given themselves over to psych rock, songs like the new “Fire Makes” are drenched in heavier guitar riffs than we have seen from them before. “Morning Song, Mountain Song”, which we first heard back in December, is a more high-octane version of the band’s style from Teeth and “The Reading Room”, perhaps my favorite new track, falls somewhere between the two. Hearing the new material at Glasslands – possibly my personal favorite Brooklyn venue, and also one where new music and new musical directions flourish – seemed appropriate. As long as The Loom continue to put out this kind of effort, they will always be a favorite of ours.

I recorded this set with Naiant X-X microphones split on stage, combined with a soundboard feed from the Glasslands engineer Josh Thiel. The sound is outstanding, even by the standards of our other recordings of this band.  Enjoy!

The L.A. band He’s My Brother She’s My Sister have multiple personalities: Their twang suggests country, their style suggests retro, the natural bounce to their songs suggests a touch of swing. You cannot fairly call them any of these things, but once it’s all happening on stage, it makes sense – and it’s a fun, theatrical affair to boot.  This pre-Sandy, pre-Halloween weekend show at the Knitting Factory seems like it was a long time ago now, but it otherwise would have been the perfect way for its crowd to enter the big weekend.  He’s My Brother She’s My Sister (which does include siblings Robert and Rachel Kolar) is a millennial party band through and through, and if you couldn’t get that from the upbeat first chorus of “How’M I Gonna Get Back Home”, their costumes probably gave it away. Their fan base – drawn heavily from those millennials – seemed to know them well, and they did their part by partying their asses off through the full hour. And they should have – in just over one hour, this band gave us a veritable tour of some of the best music of the last fifty years, from the dancefloor ready honky tonk of “Let’s Go” to the 60s rock of “Escape Tonight” and the combo of bluesy guitars and Broadway exuberance of “Touch the Lightning”. The band has just released its debut full length record, Nobody Dances In this Town, and while no recorded music could fully bottle the lightning of the band’s live show, it comes pretty damn close. Appropriate to the Halloween spirit, the set ended with the band’s signature number “Tales That I Tell”, made all the more festive by the band inviting scores of costumed, dancing audience members onstage with them.

I recorded this set with a soundboard feed provided by the Knit’s great engineer, Rob, as well as new MBHO cardiod microphones. While a malfunction in the microphone bodies results in some odd-sounding distortion during the applause between tracks at points, the sound of the recording is overall excellent, and does not have this flaw during the music itself.
