Waxahatchee: February 8, 2013 Music Hall of Williamsburg – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

Waxahatchee, the one-woman project of Katie Crutchfield, hit the scene in low-key fashion in 2012 with a record of lo-fi bedroom gems entitled American Weekend that quietly made it onto several critics’ best-of lists. The record’s raw production couldn’t mask the obvious talent Crutchfield has for writing accessible, confessional songs punctuated by her unique voice and phrasing. “Catfish”, on both that record and streaming above, is one of many examples of that, an earworm that also has something to say. American Weekend represented a transitional period for Crutchfield, who had just left she and her sister Allison’s band P.S. Eliot. She recorded the record in her parents’ bedroom in Birmingham, Alabama (her hometown).

Its newly-released follow-up, Cerulean Salt, was still recorded at home — this time in Crutchfield’s Philadelphia basement — but it is a well-produced, good-sounding record that flatters Crutchfield’s voice and her talents much more effectively than American Weekend could have hoped to. Deservedly, Stereogum just named it their Album of the Week.

This set at Music Hall of Williamsburg as part of the Don Giovanni Records showcase was originally supposed to feature a band, but the night’s blizzard made that impossible. Instead, we got a nine-song solo set that proved that Crutchfield’s songs can stand on their own, even live in a fairly large room. The set previewed four songs from Cerulean Salt – “Hollow Bedroom”, “Blue Pt. II”, “Swan Dive” and “You’re Damaged”, and as such, in cooperation Don Giovanni, we are releasing this set to coincide with the release of Cerulean Salt, which hit stores this Tuesday. It is an excellent record, and one that we think will introduce Waxahatchee to a much broader audience.

I recorded this set with an excellent soundboard feed from the house engineer, Jim plus MBHO KA200N cardiod microphones. Due to a particularly noisy audience and a quiet set, this recording is mostly the soundboard feed. Some DI noise and hiss were present, which were mostly eliminated with software editing. The final product I think will be a favorite. Enjoy!

One of the first things you notice at an Arbouretum show is how clearly you can hear frontman and lyricist Dave Heumann’s vocals. He enunciates, he articulates each word carefully, in a way that suggests he wants you to actually hear what he’s singing. And if you don’t pay attention to that, you’re missing out. This is, after all, a band that wrote an entire album (The Gathering) inspired by Karl Jung’s The Red Book. You could be forgiven, though, since along with those literary-inspired vocals, you’ll get a deep, Southern rock-inflected groove punctuated by Heumann’s own searing guitar solos. This show, which we helped to present, at Cameo Gallery proved a worthy sequel to their set at Glasslands back in 2011 when we last saw them. This set introduced us to new material from their excellent Thrill Jockey release, Coming Out of the Fog, plus some choice back catalog including one of my favorites, “St. Anthony’s Fire” from their split EP with Hush Arbors. Also not to be missed among the older material was the mighty set closer, “The Gathering”, while “World Split Open” was a highlight of the new material, which is some of the band’s most concise in years. Helped by an outstanding mix from Josh of the Cameo Gallery, the band put out a flawless set before the packed house that surpassed the 2011 show in intensity, though not quite in length. The band is spending the rest of this month and March in the UK and Europe, so for our readers across the pond, now is your chance.

Buffalo’s Lemuria aren’t actually on Don Giovanni Records, but as friends of the label they joined several of their like-minded acts for an epic night of music that also included Hilly Eye (that recording coming soon), Jeffrey Lewis (recording here), Waxahatchee (coming in early March) and Laura Stevenson (recording here). The band served up a healthy dose of their early-90s style sound which recalls the raw, direct style of acts like Superchunk and Sleater-Kinney. Highlights included the pop-punk confection “The One” from their Pebble LP and the more measured burner “Lipstick” from 2008’s Get Better. The band’s tour calendar is empty save a Montreal date in May, but be on the lookout for them on their next NYC run.

I recorded this set from an optimal location in the venue with MBHO microphones and a soundboard feed provided by the house engineer, Jim. The sound quality, like all of our recordings from this night, is excellent. Enjoy!

Bleeding Rainbow: February 12, 2013 Glasslands – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

Bleeding Rainbow just released their first album, Yeah Right, under that band name, but the husband-and-wife team of Rob Garcia and Sarah Everton have been making music together for several years. As the band Reading Rainbow, the pair put out a couple of lo-fi records that hinted at, but didn’t fully deliver on their potential. With Yeah Right, the band has a masterfully produced record that does. Now joined by Greg Frantz on drums and Al Creedon on guitar, the beefed-up lineup has developed a rich, shoegaze sound with a newly-minted pop sheen. This show at Glasslands was the first NYC gig for the Philadelphia band since the record’s release, and they came out blazing. After a brief false start, the band launched into an extended version of the record’s leadoff track, “Go Ahead”, followed by the record’s next to two tracks, “Pink Ruff” and “Drift Away”. One thing that sets Bleeding Rainbow apart from many like-minded acts is that they aren’t afraid to actually sing rather than let their vocals be buried in the washes of MBV-style guitars. Though Everton provides the lead vocal on most tracks, Garcia’s harmonizing with her gives the songs added depth. The pair mesh well together live, feeding off of each other’s energy, and enjoying the added freedom lent by the new personnel. Bleeding Rainbow have set themselves on a path that will give them even more room to grow, and we look forward to watching that happen.

Whether you’re sick of Valentine’s Day shenanigans or not, you owe it to yourself to join your fellow music fans at Cameo Gallery this Friday, February 15, as NYCTaper presents a triple bill from three excellent live bands that we dig. NYC’s Endless Boogie are fixtures of the local rock scene, and deservedly so. We first saw them opening for Pavement during their reunion tour a few years ago and have followed them with interest since, as they have cranked out some positively deadly LPs like the double Full House Head on local No Quarter Records. As their name implies, EB play big songs with fat, chooglin’ riffs that you might remember from the 70s, if you’ve been alive that long. If not, this is what you missed. The show will be the release party for their new No Quarter release, Long Island, the first track of which recently debuted on NPR. If you want more Boogie than that NPR taste, there is also a three-hour (remember that word, “endless” in the name) live set from WFMU online. Or, you know, just come to the show and find out what they’re about in the raw.

This show’s out of town guests, also introducing material from a new record, are NYCTaper veterans Arbouretum. This will be their first NYC show since their latest Thrill Jockey release, Coming Out of the Fog. If you managed to catch their set at Glasslands back in 2011 like we did, you know to expect some tightly performed, heavy-rocking Southern-influenced psych rock with a strong literary streak. Coming Out of the Fog is their most focused work yet and these guys’ live show is not to be missed. See what we mean by streaming our 2011 recording below:

Hans Chew

You may have first met the piano boogie wizard Hans Chew when he played the NYCTaper CMJ Day Party back in October. If you didn’t, you missed a barnburner. Hans kicked off that show with almost all-new tracks, and a few months later, he’s got even more new material to share. Hans will start this night off at 8:30p.m. sharp, and he should more than wet your whistle for the next acts to come with his high-energy and endlessly entertaining style that takes its honky-tonk roots into the 20th century. His Three Lobed/Divide by Zero LP Tennessee & Other Stories is not to be missed, and we expect a new release from him this spring if things go according to plan.

Brian Settles & Central Union: January 16, 2013 Barbès – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

Virtually all of the music we cover on this website, partly by design, but partly by inertia, falls somewhere along the spectrum of “rock” music. Even if that’s the case, that represents only a fraction of the music we listen to, or are interested in. New York remains a hotbed of activity for the still-vital jazz scene, and one of the easiest and most low-key ways to get some exposure to the scene right now is through The Palimpsestic Series, curated by Oscar Noriega at the Park Slope bar Barbès every Wednesday night. On the advice of a friend, I settled in on a recent night for an outstanding set by the Washington, D.C. virtuoso tenor saxophonist Brian Settles and most of his band Central Union (Jeremy Carlstedt, on drums and Jean Marie Collatin Faye, on percussion and bassist Corcoran Holt). Settles’ 2011 album, Secret Handshake, represents the first record for the accomplished Duke Ellington School of the Arts veteran as a bandleader, a role into which he fits admirably. This set featured two of those compositions, “Zui Quan” and “Soulnimsky”, a cover of John Coltrane’s “Reverend King”, and three new numbers. Some rock shows make me flat-out bored these days; watching Settles and his band up close in this setting was riveting. In this postage-stamp-sized room, it’s not hard to arrive early enough to get a front-row seat to the action, and I would encourage live jazz newbies (like me) to take advantage of a chance to not only listen to the players, but watch how they interact with each other and the piece of music. Especially as live music is concerned, jazz (especially of the more avant-garde variety) is an undeservedly obscure art form. There is a whole world of exceptional performances out there – like this one – if you take the time to seek them out.

Settles will next appear in New York on this Saturday, Feb 2., when he and Carlstedt appear as a duo as part of the Evolving Music Series, located at 107 Suffolk Street in Manhattan. Their set time is 10:30pm, and you can get tickets at the door.

I recorded this set directly in front of the band using the mid-side technique with a Schoeps MK5 cardiod microphone as the center channel and a Schoeps MK8 figure-8 microphone as the “side”, which allows the recordist to vary the width of the stereo image. This recording provides exceptional width and clarity, though the instruments may be too localized for some people’s taste if they listen through headphones. Enjoy!

Math the Band: January 4, 2013 Glasslands – Flac/MP3/Streaming

When I first saw Math the Band, in an opening slot for Anamanaguchi at Music Hall a couple of years ago, I knew I would have to see them and record them again. That 2011 recording was just not high enough quality to post, and it frankly failed to capture the crazy energy of the performance. Friday night at Glasslands, that energy was on display again and thankfully the stars aligned to produce a faithful recording of their fun and crazy set. Math the Band has been around for a decade and they are part of the groundbreaking Providence RI art collective AS220, but the duo performs with a kind of unselfconscious elation that would be typical of a brand new band finding their footing. The Glasslands show was short and sweet, a less than 30 minute run through much of their new album Get Real and a few chosen older nuggets. While the band certainly makes abundant use of the chiptune style keyboard, the songwriting shows influences of oldies like Dead Milkmen. And like their predecessors, the live show is a hoot — a smile-inducing experience that ends too soon and leaves us wanting more. Math the Band will be touring throughout January on the East Coast, dates are here.

I recorded this set with the Sennheiser Cards mounted in the middle of Glasslands and mixed with an excellent board feed from house FOH Josh. The sound is excellent. Enjoy!

Suzuki Junzo: November 27, 2012 Union Pool – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

The Japanese guitarist Suzuki Junzo‘s latest album is entitled Ode To A Blue Ghost, and that is an apt description for the spectral noise that Junzo wrings from his guitar. I was not familiar with Junzo before this show, but he has had a long career in the Japanese guitar underground, cranking out a host of self- and label-released records. This show at Union Pool with fellow avant-gardists Rhyton, Eidetic Seeing and the Gibby Haynes and Kohoutek-affiliated Ultimate Vag gave fans of far-out psych and noise a lot to love, but even the musicians in the other bands were somewhat unfamiliar with Junzo’s work. With an undercurrent of blues, Junzo’s guitar sounds can run a surprising emotional range, blending the familiar with the unfamiliar. This show represented a fairly rare chance to see Junzo outside his native Japan, and we are thrilled to have been there to capture it.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK5 microphones and a soundboard feed by the house engineer, Doug. This favors the soundboard mix as it is all guitar, and other than a few spots of DI distortion, it is excellent. Enjoy!

Deer Tick: December 12, 2012 Brooklyn Bowl – Flac/MP3/Streaming

Tonight is the final show of Deer Tick‘s three-Wednesday residency at Brooklyn Bowl, and if last week is any sign this should be a barnburner. The first week’s show (recording here) was a tight and solid Deer Tick show where they played Born On Flag Day along with the first EP and about half of War Elephant as an encore. This past week it wasn’t just that the band played The Black Dirt Sessions straight through (plus the Christmas EP), but the encore segment was like an entire other Deer Tick show. The band played nine songs over two encore segments including covers, older material and guest appearances. Tonight’s show will feature the complete Divine Providence album along with the Tim EP, and I don’t think I’m going out on a limb when I predict another lengthy encore segment with a likely Replacements cover. We’ll be there again.

I recorded this set in the same manner as the first week, with the hyper card Neumanns accompanied by an excellent soundboard feed. Enjoy!

For the fifth night of Hanukkah, Yo La Tengo dedicated their show to Brooklyn and to benefit the Brooklyn Recovery Fund, and honored the borough’s rich hip-hop tradition with the somewhat off-the-wall guest opener of El-P. If special guest stars during the main set are your favorite thing about these Hanukkah shows, tonight was not your night, as we didn’t get to experience a rapping Ira, James or Georgia or find hip-hop beats blaring behind “Mr. Tough”. But if Ira’s patented guitar freakouts are more your bag, then this set that went more or less from quiet to loud gave you plenty to love. From the opening solo of “From A Motel 6” into “I Should Have Known Better” to the screaming three-song suite of “Deeper Into Movies” into “Some Kinda Fatigue” into “Sugarcube”, this was a night where the band could shine without any added players. And after that trio came the sprawling “The Story of Yo La Tengo”, a song that, if any in their catalog, is worthy of the name, evolving from a spare organ intro into a full-blown squall of guitar, Ira barely visible from the back of Maxwell’s as he hunched over to will the notes from his instrument. While by Hanukkah standards this set could be billed as a “conventional” one (albeit, one that also saw the debut of another new song, “Cornelia and Jane”), it was, in the story of this 2012 Hanukkah run, no less vital.

I recorded this set in the same manner as the other nights, this time with Schoeps MK5 microphones to produce a fuller, warmer sound. Like all of the recordings released so far, this one benefited from a beautiful house mix by the band’s engineer Mark, and is another outstanding document of the band. Enjoy!
