NYCTaper’s Favorite Concerts We Recorded in 2012 (w/ Streaming Songs)

There is always more live music going on in New York than any one person (or four people) can see at one time, let alone record and share. Add to that the tradition of the summer road-trip (or flight to North Carolina) and we had a ton of shows to see, share and discuss. When you record this many shows, it’s pretty easy for your memory of individual ones to get hazy. Some you forget (or maybe want to forget) altogether. This list is not intended as a definitive “best of”, necessarily, but out of the hundreds of bands we saw take the stage, the moments represented here were the ones that not only stuck in our minds, but that we kept turning back to and listening to again and again. This was another tough year for New York and for this country in general, but that didn’t stop people from making great music, and we are thankful to have been there to witness it as often as we were. We hope that if you listened to any of our recordings this year that they brought you happiness, and wish you all the best for 2013.

Bjork – February 25, 2012 Roseland and February 12, 2012 New York Hall of Science

We were lucky enough to catch two of the Biophilia: Live shows by Björk, an original and rare talent whose bizarre science-meets-music vision brought to life on a 360-degree stage was as electric as the giant Tesla coil onstage. The singer’s voice is without match, and the Icelandic choir that joined her made the material even better. These were some of the most popular recordings on the site this year, even if the sound alone could not quite do these staggeringly entertaining performances justice.

Hiss Golden Messenger – September 7, 2012 Hopscotch Festival, Raleigh, NC (day show and night show)

Other than that he isn’t in a major media market, is on a tiny, mostly reissue-based label, and has a challenging full-time day job, I can’t figure out why MC Taylor, who performs as Hiss Golden Messenger, isn’t more popular outside of North Carolina. I suppose those three are good reasons, but as this year’s Hopscotch Music Festival in Raleigh, NC reminded us, North Carolina is very much a musical hotbed right now. Taylor’s music is an approachable blend of rock, country, gospel and folk, with a timeless appeal that can span generations and earn Grammy awards. At these two shows – first the Three Lobed Recordings/’WXDU Day Show in a stripped-down setup, and then at night in a larger auditorium with a full band, Taylor performed songs that were flat-out heartbreakingly beautiful and just as equally memorable. The man’s performances are instant classics. If he comes to your town, drop what you’re going and go see what he’s about.

Akron/Family – January 21, 2012 at 285 Kent

Akron/Family almost always put on a memorable show, but the freewheeling atmosphere of 285 Kent combined with A/F almost guaranteed one for this night. This manic, lengthy celebratory, show featured full crowd participation (audience drummers!) and an intense performance.

Dinosaur Jr. – December 1, 2012 Terminal 5

Johnny Fried Chicken Boy and I had already nominated this show as one of the best of the year before we had even hit the post-show pavement. Celebrating the 25th anniversary of the album You’re Living All Over Me, the original lineup played that record and a slew of other favorites with special guests including Frank Black, Lee Ranaldo, Kim Gordon, Don Fleming, Johnny Marr, Tommy Stinson and NYC’s current favorite journeyman artist Fred Armisen. For me, the rendition of “Don’t” with Gordon on vocals  was the night’s absolute barnburner.

Thanks to the location and its signature product, I’m not sure how clearly most of us, er, actually remember this show. But the entire NYCTaper crew taking a roadtrip to one of New York’s best breweries to see one of our favorite bands had to mark a high point of the year for us. Wilco played an excellent set in at-times-torrential rain that included some rare numbers like “Laminated Cat” as well as a trio of Being There classics as part of the encore. At least, I think that’s what happened….

Ty Segall/Thee Oh Sees – September 24, 2012 Death By Audio

I didn’t have a better time at any other show this year.  Two big acts (one of whom we were writing about back in 2009) in small clubs playing their butts off is always a good combination.

Patterson Hood – July 23, 2012 Bell House

It’s easy to be cynical about a lead singer of a still-thriving band doing a solo album (this one his second). But Patterson Hood of Drive-By Truckers showed himself to be a musical force in his own right. Laughing and telling stories to the crowd in between numbers, this show gave us a window into the man’s soul in a way that you can’t get at the Truckers’ more big-time performances.

An amazing story of how the original members of Luna decided to reunite with Sean Eden for a charity and play songs we’re not likely to ever hear again live in this configuration. And our pals The War on Drugs were there to play a set (and dedicate a song to us) as well!

DIIV – June 8, 2012 285 Kent

As is so often the case, promoter ToddP got a crack at this band as a headliner before the hype machine had quite hit full steam.  Sure, 285 Kent isn’t Music Hall of Williamsburg size-wise, but there were more than enough in-the-know people to slam-pack this venue to its sweatiest capacity, as DIIV showed themselves to be one of this year’s best new bands (as many other sites would later acknowledge). Oh, and they covered an unreleased Nirvana b-side, too.

Is it hard to overstate how fucking awesome it is to have one of our favorite bands playing one of our favorite sets of theirs ever at a show thrown to celebrate five years of this site’s existence? Why, yes it is.

Yo La Tengo – all of the 2012 Hanukkah shows at Maxwell’s, but particularly December 9, 2012, December 10, 2012 and December 14, 2012

At points this December it felt like the site should be called “YoLaTengoTaper” given the amount of time we were spending at Maxwell’s to see this year’s Yo La Tengo Hanukkah shows. Our obsession with these shows is well-justified;  the storyline is irresistible. A legendary local band, playing eight shows in a row from their tiny homebase venue to benefit Hurricane Sandy recovery, with special guests like the Sun Ra Arkestra, The Feelies, Devendra Banhart, Andrew Bird, Kid Millions of Oneida, and more is kind of the ultimate holiday gift from a band to its fans, no?

Sharon Van Etten – February 26, 2012 Bowery Ballroom

We have followed Sharon Van Etten for years and our respect for her is well-documented, but this homecoming show at Bowery Ballroom represented the full realization of Van Etten as a bona fide full band. The Tramp material in particular here was performed flawlessly, with the grace and intensity we’ve come to expect from her.

Lower Dens – May 2, 2012 Glasslands

I usually find it hard to narrow down the number of “favorite” shows I see at Glasslands, but this year, this Lower Dens show was a huge standout. With the Baltimore band touring behind their expansive new LP, Nootropics, they showed up in front of a maxed-out crowd and proved that their meditative, texture-heavy songs could also kill it live.

Kevin Devine – December 1, 2012 Webster Hall

December 1st must have been one of the best days for music all year. Two of our favorite shows – Dinosaur Jr. at Terminal 5 and this sprawling Kevin Devine show – happened on this date, and we missed at least two others that would have been must-sees on any other night. We’re not sure any contemporary artist has ever played three full albums on one date, but Kevin did it, and with exceptional grace. A night to remember.

Alabama Shakes – April 11, 2012 Bowery Ballroom

When you see a band on the night that they discover they’ve “made it” in New York, you usually see them at their best. After that moment, things will never be the same for them, internally or externally. From 2009 until this moment, Alabama Shakes was an at-best regionally known band from Athens, Alabama that had been gaining some post-CMJ buzz from 2011. After this Bowery Ballroom show, as I said to Johnny Fried Chicken Boy during the show, they were headed straight for a Grammy, which they now have a pretty good shot at earning. They were obviously humbled and amazed by what they saw in front of them – a slew of industry people and eager fans looking at the “next big thing”.  And they played that way.

Among several shows of theirs we saw this year (including our own CMJ show), this was the perfect example of a band finding its voice in the live setting at the same time as they released a fantastic album – in this case, the largely unheralded but outstanding Look Out Mama. 

Woods – November 3, 2012 Music Hall of Williamsburg

As many of us were just emerging from Hurricane Sandy hell (and many were still stuck in it), Woods gave Brooklynites a reason to leave the house for this outstanding show at Music Hall. Woods may be of the more recent vintage of Brooklyn bands, but their ability to stretch, bend and reshape a song is of another era. Their appropriately titled new record, Bend Beyond, is only a guidepost for what you get at one of their incredible live shows.

Olivia Tremor Control – June 16, 2012 Music Hall of Williamsburg

When I was at this show, I thought it heralded a comeback for the Athens, GA-based psychedelic wizards. Instead, this was the last time I would ever see Olivia Tremor Control. Founding member Bill Doss passed away scarcely a month later, and with him, this cherished cornerstone of the Elephant 6 collective. Rest in peace, Bill, and may your music live forever.

The Mountain Goats – October 13, 2012 Music Hall of Williamsburg

Those in the know called this Mountain Goats show the best of the latest tour. We’re here to give you the audio evidence that they’re right.

Gov’t Mule (w/ the Levon Helm Band) – June, 2012 Mountain Jam, Hunter, NY

Set against a backdrop of the Catskill Mountains, Gov’t Mule and the Levon Helm Band paid one hell of a tribute to one of music’s most dearly departed this year, Levon Helm. As if the idea that music has the power to transcend even death needed affirming, these guys did it with this performance.

Dinosaur Jr.: December 1, 2012 Terminal 5 – FLAC / MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

Here at NYCTaper, we have a special place in our hearts for Dinosaur Jr. Not only do they make outstanding music and have chops second to none but they have long supported the taping community, making several appearances on this website including one of the first recordings posted here. We were particularly ecstatic when the original lineup of J Mascis, Lou Barlow and Murph reunited in 2005 and have since released three superb albums. In the interim, we have done our best to capture as many of their concerts as we can but none of us grasped the full extent of what we were in for when they announced this celebratory show marking the 25th anniversary of the seminal and influential ‘You’re Living All Over Me‘ album. In addition to playing the disc in its entirety, allusions were made to many other tracks and “special friends” making an appearance. We wound up being clobbered with a setlist and guest lineup worthy of an alt/indie-rock uber fan’s wet dream: Lee Ranaldo and Kim Gordon of Sonic Youth, Frank Black from the Pixies, Johnny Marr of The Smiths, Dale Crover from the Melvins, Tommy Stinson of The Replacements, Kyle Spence from Harvey Milk, Kurt Vile, Al Cisneros from Sleep, Kevin Drew of Broken Social Scene, Suzanne Thorpe of Mercury Rev, Don Fleming, Dante Ferrando, John Petkovic and Fred Armisen. On a night with more highlights and jaw-dropping performances than one can count, there was a wonderful interplay between all the artists and a realization by the crowd that this concert was to be savored. Thank you J, Lou and Murph for the awesome holiday gift you honored us with. It was an extraordinary way to begin drawing this year to a close.

Thanks to Dinosaur Jr.’s management and the team at Terminal 5, we were given the opportunity to set up and record from the dead-center spot towards the back of the floor. With such an ideal location, acidjack and I ran three distinctly different microphone configurations in an effort to ensure the best possible recording we could make: Milab VM-44 Links (DIN) and AKG C 414 B-XLS’s in both Blumlein and M/S configurations. The results are uniformly excellent so we are offering all three sources for download. We certainly hope you like what you hear as much as we did. Enjoy!

Kurt Vile: December 1, 2012 Terminal 5 – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

It is hard not to be overshadowed a bit when you have the task faced by Kurt Vile and the Violators, who opened the epic Dinosaur Jr. 25th Anniversary Show last weekend at Terminal 5. But, even facing an expectant crowd yearning for J. Mascis’ guitar shredding (and that of a slew of special guests, including Kurt himself), Vile was not to be outdone so easily.  Since we last caught one of his sets opening for Yo La Tengo at Maxwell’s last year, Kurt has continued to rack up accolades for his Matador-released Smoke Ring For My Halo and continued to improve and develop his live sound. That was on full display here, as the band’s psychedelic guitar pyrotechnics on songs like “Jesus Fever” from Halo dominated the room. The Violators on this night included a second guitarist from another Philly band and site favorite, Purling Hiss frontman Mike Polizze, who added his own unique style to this seven-song set. Getting to check out a set from Kurt Vile before an epic two-hour plus Dinosaur Jr. show was just the first of this night’s many awesome moments.

Johnny Fried Chicken Boy and I recorded this set from the floor in front of the soundboard, in a designated taping section graciously arranged for us by Dinosaur Jr. The microphones used were AKG 414s in the “mid/side” configuration, which allows the user to vary the amount of room reflections, and gave some nice clarity to the sound of this often-boomy room. Enjoy!

“I don’t care what kind of mood you happen to be in, there’s something about going to see The Gourds that pretty much guarantees a good time. Between the upbeat vibe the band exudes and the raucous, fun-lovin’ fans they attract (no doubt infused with copious amounts of alcohol) it’s like being at a great party. The expert musicianship, great songcraft and interesting choice of covers they perform definitely help support that atmosphere. We caught our first Gourds concert last year, had a blast and were very happy to see them come back to town this summer. And, as expected, we sure weren’t disappointed with a show that may have surpassed the last one. We’ve become big fans of The Gourds ourselves and can’t recommend strongly enough that you get out and see them when you have the chance and need to put a big smile on your face.

At the great-sounding Mercury Lounge the audio was perfectly dialed in, as usual, on this night and the mix sounded sublime. With kudos going to the superbly combined efforts of The Gourds’ engineer, Mark, and the venue’s engineer, Kevin, the quality of hi and lo’s recording is excellent. Enjoy!”

Futurebirds continue to broaden their audience and appeal, as the Athens, GA band refines their live sound and, of course, books opening slots with well-loved acts like the Heartless Bastards. When I caught them last year at Union Pool, the venue and the atmosphere gave the proceedings a more boozy, party-band vibe. That isn’t necessarily untrue of this Irving Plaza set – it was Halloween weekend, the band was the only one of the night’s acts to roll in with Halloween costumes, and the crowd was drinking plenty – but the bigger stage and sound system gave the band a more commanding presence. Here, their music had a bit more of an epic scope, so much so that they reminded me of a pedal steel-playing, more countrified version of fellow Southerners My Morning Jacket. The band, whose last record is a live album that documents the strength of their live sound, is using these Heartless Bastards shows to work out new material, and three of those as-yet-unnamed tunes were on offer on this night. Together with regular tour classics like their cover of Stevie Nicks’ “Wild Heart” and “Johnny Utah”, this show reaffirmed my view that we’ll be seeing more of Futurebirds in the years to come.

I recorded this set with MBHO KA200N cardiod microphones from the center of the floor. Despite the challenges of the boomy room, with some TLC the recording is quite good. Enjoy!

For a few years now, I’ve had several people telling me that I must go see a Frank Turner concert.  After listening to a few of his studio releases, I put him on my short-list of performers to catch.  With lyrics that spoke to the common man and woman about dealing with everyday problems and extolling life’s simple pleasures, accompanying generally upbeat, ear-catching song structure, I easily saw the appeal of his music.  What I wasn’t prepared for was the complete and utter adulation of the folks at the show.  Shortly after arriving, I met one girl who had seen him a dozen times and several others who claimed to have nearly as many Turner performances or more under their belts.  Hitting the stage for the second, and sold-out, night of a pair at Webster Hall, Frank and his excellent band, The Sleeping Souls (with guitarist Ben Lloyd, bassist Tarrant Anderson, keyboardist Matt Nasir and drummer Nigel Powell), had the majority of the crowd singing every word to the songs right from the start and, basically, at their beck and call.  Clap your hands?  No problem.  Play air harmonica?  We’re on it.  Dance around like lunatics?  Just watch us.  Thankfully, the artists and attendees encouraged the uninitiated and welcomed us with open arms.  Delivering songs from most of his albums, the bulk of 2011’s ‘England Keep My Bones‘ and even a few new tracks, there seemed to be something for everyone.  Suffice to say, I had a blast.  The only downside to the evening is that this was the last show of the band’s tour before they go into the studio to record their next album.  While I greatly anticipate the disc that Frank Turner & The Sleeping Souls will be releasing next year, I have to admit that I am just as excited looking forward to the next time I can see them play again.

With Webster Hall’s top-notch FOH, Creegan, on the controls and joined by the band’s equally superb engineer, Casey, at the helm, the sound was just about perfect for this night.  We were able to get a board feed to accompany our microphones and the resultant recording is excellent.  We hope you like what you hear as much as we did, and even sing, clap and dance to it if you want to.  Enjoy!

Melvins “Lite”: October 4, 2012 Music Hall of Williamsburg – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

The “Lite” version of the Melvins (one drummer instead of two, no electric bass) is still a hell of a lot heavier than most bands on their best day, and this show at Music Hall of Williamsburg continued that trend. The band is on a quixotic mission to play 50 states in 51 days (possibly setting a world record), and this Brooklyn show found the band a little over halfway through their quest. If they were burned out from the relentless schedule, they didn’t show it; the band came out charging, in good spirits, and as ear-bustingly loud as ever. Even without their usual dual-drummer setup, one Dale Crover can provide a whole lot of percussion, and Buzz Osborne’s guitars and Trevor Dunn’s upright bass similarly held their own. Dunn’s rocking out with the upright bass was a special thrill, as he manhandled the big bass like a smaller electric, playing on his back, twirling it over his head, and doing just about everything but smash it to bits all over the stage.  This set included some crowd pleasers from the band’s best-known album, Houdini  (“Hooch”, “Set Me Straight” and “Sky Pup”), but as usual, dug deep into the back catalog, kicking off with “Eye Flys” from the band’s first album, Gluey Porch Treatments. One highlight at several stops on this tour has been the “Inner Ear Rupture” and “Shevil” combo, and that closed the night’s set in special style, with the song stretching to a full 12 minutes. The band has a ways to go before they get the record, and we’re pulling for them!

Johnny Fried Chicken Boy and I were in the balcony of the venue in our usual spot for this set.  We used two pairs of mics that made roughly equal recordings, so much so that there didn’t seem to be much point combining the two sources.  This is my Schoeps MK41 supercardiod microphones in tightly-spaced configuration to provide as much direct sound as possible. The results are comparable to the site’s other excellent Melvins recordings from Music Hall, which you can locate by clicking the “Melvins” tag below. Enjoy!

Corin Tucker Band: September 27, 2012 Mercury Lounge – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

Corin Tucker is 39 years old. She spent most of the 90s and a solid chunk of the 2000s fronting Sleater-Kinney with co-frontwoman Carrie Brownstein, and she has also played in the bands Cadallaca, Heartless Martin and Heavens to Betsy. Corin may be (by rock standards) “getting older”, but she sure is making it look like fun with the Corin Tucker Band, now on their second LP.

“Groundhog Day”, one of the standout tracks on her band’s latest, Kill My Blues, tells her current story with its opening lines

Huh? Que pasa? I’ve just woken up / Like Rip Van Winkle in a denim mini skirt / Wait, you see, now, I took a rest  / I took some time to be a mom and have some kids

The rest of the song takes Tucker through some familiar territory for her – a disappointment with the state of modern feminism, a bewilderment at a cause that she feels is stagnating – “Instead of going forward, where the hell we going now?”.  So yes – Tucker is no longer 22, and yes, she is a mom. But take one listen to Kill My Blues, and take a look at the band that took the stage at Mercury Lounge on a recent Wednesday night, and tell me she doesn’t still have the fire. Corin’s first solo record, the critically-loved 1,000 Years, was touted as a more subdued “middle-aged mom record” in her words, Kill My Blues is a caffeinated, lacerating return to the form that made her contributions to Sleater-Kinney so memorable.

Which is to say, Tucker has the kind of voice that’ll rattle your cage when in full throat, and she lets it rip on most of these new songs. While many of her contemporaries in like-minded bands could hold their own in terms of raw power, Tucker’s voice is notable for her control and unique tonality as well as its power. Songs like “I Don’t Wanna Go”, Tucker’s tribute to Olympia, WA punk scene fixture Natalie Cox, push those vocals to the max, and live, Tucker is even more visceral than on record. This night’s lineup of the Corin Tucker Band featured Portland journeyman Dave Depper on bass, Seth Lorinczi (of Golden Bears) on guitar and keys, and Sarah Lund (of Unwound) on the drums, and they proved to be a formidable rhythm section, so tight that the show sounded like a studio outing at points. But for fans who thought that 1,000 Years was too subdued, Tucker had an answer, too, as the band tore through “Doubt” to close out the main set with a squall of perfect Pacific Northwest-style noise. For an encore, the band served up two covers, including Blondie’s “Atomic” and “Three Minute Hero” by the UK ska greats The Selecter. Seeing Corin Tucker Band will certainly help sate your Sleater-Kinney craving; it might also kill your fear of getting “older”.

I recorded this set with a flawless soundboard feed of the house mix by Jeff Hylton Simmons, the band’s FOH, together with Schoeps MK41 supercardiod microphones in my usual location. This recording demonstrates how good the club’s new PA system is, and it could well be my personal best Mercury Lounge recording of this year. Enjoy!

North Mississippi Allstars: September 28, 2012 Irving Plaza – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

North Mississippi Allstars frontman Luther Dickinson noted early on during this show at Irving Plaza that NMAS hasn’t been to Manhattan in awhile. While we checked in with NMAS-related projects like Luther’s The Wandering at Joe’s Pub this year and the stripped-down NMAS Duo at Iridium Jazz Club last year, it has seemed that the full band has more or less dedicated its NYC performances to Brooklyn Bowl of late. Besides the venue change, this show represented a return to NYC without a key member of the NMAS crew, as band member Chris Chew is still recovering from a diabetic coma he suffered earlier this summer. While the band has announced that Chew will return to the stage with the band in Milwaukee and Chicago in a few days, this show found the Allstars joined by the legendary blues guitarist Lightnin’ Malcom in Chew’s stead. Several songs also saw appearances from JoJo Hermann, who was in tow with the night’s opening act Missing Cats but is better known as keyboardist of Widespread Panic. Among others, JoJo joined the band for a banging rendition of the RL Burnside classic and NMAS favorite “Po Black Maddie” with an extended bit of jamming, as well as a sick sequence of “Mississippi Boll Weevi” into “Shake ‘Em” that has been a staple on the current tour. Although the band’s set was cut a bit short by the club’s 12 a.m. curfew (combined with a longer Missing Cats’ set due to some very special guests), what this set lacked in length was made up for in quality.

With the full nyctaper crew in attendance, Johnny Fried Chicken Boy and I recorded this set using his Milab VM-44 Links into a Sound Devices MixPre with high-end Lundahl transformers, combined with my Schoeps MK22 “open cardiod” mics in the “NOS” configuration to add spaciousness and depth. The sound is excellent. Enjoy!

Patterson Hood and the Downtown Rumblers: September 17, 2012 Bowery Ballroom – FLAC/MP3/Streaming Songs

Back in July acidjack and I had the opportunity to catch Patterson Hood and the Downtown Rumblers at the Bell House on what was the first leg of a tour to support the new album, ‘Heat Lightning Rumbles in the Distance‘.  To put it succinctly, they floored us and it was unanimously decided that we were looking forward to their return to the NYC area.  I won’t even begin to match the superlative review that acidjack wrote for that show as he hit the nail squarely on the head with it and perfectly articulated Patterson’s strengths as a great songwriter and how good the experience was.  I will tell you that this same top-notch group of musicians definitely sounded a shade tighter and a little more comfortable with more gigs under their collective belt.  And with the addition of multi-instrumentalists Claire and Page Campbell from opening band Hope For Agoldensummer joining the fellas on stage, they fleshed out new layers and depth from these cuts.  As a storyteller, Hood’s tales and songs sounded just as detailed and intimate as they had two months previous.  With most of the new disc represented this night, he also pulled out some of his older material as well as dusting off a handful of Drive-By Truckers favorites.  And once again, by the time the band parted from the stage, this appreciative audience felt like we had spent the evening with a good buddy.

Flying microphones from our usual spot in the balcony, we were also granted a board feed from Bowery Ballroom’s house engineer par excellence, Kenny, and he had the sound beautifully dialed in.  The result is a great recording of this concert.  We hope you like what you hear as much as we did.  Enjoy!
