Antietam: May 22, 2015 Cake Shop – Flac/MP3/Streaming

Antietam has been playing really well lately. We saw them in an opening gig for Yo La Tengo back in December in Philadelphia and the ferocious post-punk trio filled the big room with a superb set. In May, the circumstances were much different, as Antietam opened for Condo Fucks in a surprise show to celebrate Cake Shop’s 10th Anniversary. In the tiny basement room the energy was that much more kinetic. The band ripped through ten songs in forty minutes, including some older tracks but it was primarily strong new material that dominated the setlist. This of course bodes well for the prospect of Antietam releasing a new album. It would be their first since 2011’s Tenth Life.

This is a special week for the band, as Antietam will headline a show at Trans Pecos on Thursday night — a venue that offers the kind of vibe that fits well for a respected non-nonsense veteran outfit. The Facebook invite for this show is here.

I recorded this set with the Sennheiser cards mounted in a thread above the stage and mixed with a board feed. The on-stage mics captured the instruments with great clarity and the board feed was used to fortify the vocals. The result of the mix is a very well-balanced recording with superb sound. Enjoy!

Amy Rigby: May 28, 2015 HiFi Bar – Flac/MP3/Streaming

Amy Rigby has been busy musically of late, recording three albums with her husband of seven years, Wreckless Eric, and touring semi-regularly as a duo from their home base in upstate New York. One thing she hasn’t done in a while, though, is play solo shows of her own — which is why when she announced a weekly residency at the HiFi Bar on Avenue A (the old Brownie’s space, still run by former Brownie’s booker Mike Stuto), I immediately canceled my Thursday plans for the month.

The shows did not disappoint in the slightest. HiFi is a cozy space, with a small stage, a pair of booths, and a handful of small tables wedged into what was the Brownie’s stage and standing room area — just about perfect for singer-songwritery performances. And as we were quickly reminded, Rigby is an unbeatable singer-songwriter. Whether on her own with acoustic guitar and organ (week one), accompanied by Wreckless Eric on bass and Jon Graboff on pedal steel (week two), or in full-on rock formation with Eric and drummer Jeremy Grites plus special guests Syd Straw and Lenny Kaye (week three, which I sadly missed), she was by turns poignant and hilarious, drawing on songs from her five solo albums (most famously her 1996 solo debut Diary of a Mod Housewife), rarities from her early days with ’80s bands Last Roundup and The Shams, and a handful of covers and new songs destined for her in-the-works solo album. Week four was possibly the most special of all, if only for the special guest: Amy’s daughter Hazel Rigby, who plays bass and sings in the Brooklyn-based indie rock group Outside World. With Hazel on bass and shared vocals, mother and daughter tackled the Last Roundup song “At The Well” (“I was about Hazel’s age when I wrote this”) plus an outstanding cover of the Flying Burrito Brothers’ “Wheels.” A few songs later, following a hilariously botched comedy bit involving a cell phone call from backstage, Wreckless Eric joined in for several songs, including “Genovese Bag,” Amy’s touching love letter to Hazel (“You were Mutt to my Jeff, I was Jack to your Jill”) that is possibly the greatest song ever about the joys and pains of parenting.

If the word “hilarious” comes up a lot in this writeup, it will become apparent why once you’ve heard “Keep It To Yourself,” one of the all-time great post-breakup songs. But this was largely a night for gentler emotions, as marked by the song Rigby chose for the closer (before being called back onstage for one final encore): “Don’t Ever Change,” an achingly sweet but never saccharine ode to the things worth cherishing in life, even if you may not always notice them at the time. Which is a pretty good summary of Amy Rigby’s own three-decade-long music career, for that matter — though on these four nights, she definitely got noticed.

This was recorded with Church Audio CA-14 cardioid mics, powered by Church’s Ugly battery box, to a Sony PCM-M10 recorder. There is a small fraction of a board feed mixed in for fortification of the vocals and also to lessen the enthusiastic crowd response. King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard: June 19, 2015 Bowery Ballroom – Flac/MP3/Streaming

In the year since we were first introduced to King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, they’ve grown from being fairly obscure Australian psych-rock ravers to the group that released one of our favorite albums of the last year, signed with Castle Face Records in the US, and this past week sold out Bowery Ballroom. Last Fall they played two of our favorite shows of the past year, a eye-opener as support for White Fence at Baby’s All Right, and a completely insane set at a loft show on Halloween. In between the band released I’m In Your Mind Fuzz to universally positive reviews and gained enough of a foothold in the US to return six months later from halfway across the world and fill a room that it takes others years to achieve. That says a lot for the musicianship and songwriting of The Gizz, but for their live shows its mostly about the unbridled energy they bring to each performance. At Bowery, the band started with the four-song medley that opens Mind and the crowd was with them from note one — this was one of those shows where it was hard to ever even catch your breath. The set also featured a handful of new songs, each of which fit right into the flow and maintained the energy inside the venue. This bodes well for the quality of the band’s future releases. I later learned from speaking with the band that there will be likely two upcoming releases, details to follow.

I recorded this set with the Schoeps cards and a fine board feed from our usual location at the Bowery and the sound quality is quite excellent. Enjoy!

ST 37: May 6, 2015 Knitting Factory and May 7, 2015 Mercury Lounge – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

ST 37 have been at the game longer than some percentage of their audience had probably been alive. These two NYC sets gave us a much-appreciated amount of exposure to the Austin band, as neither of us had seen them before. Their style, which I might call “psychedelic hardcore”, lends itself to the live setting, where they get the chance to experiment and let their songs grow. We were fortunate enough to catch both sets at Knitting Factory and Mercury Lounge that featured completely different setlists. In both cases, we got a nice taste of the band’s range, from more straight-up hardcore numbers like “White Comanche” to meditative jam numbers like “KBDP (Karen Black’s Demerol Patch),” which sounds a bit like the drug referenced in the title. Between these two killer sets, the default winner almost has to be the Mercury set, where tourmate Kawabata Makoto of Acid Mothers Temple joined the band for “Just You.” Make sure to make a date with ST 37 the next time they’re out your way.

Both of these sets were recorded with Schoeps microphones (mine being MK41V supercardiods, nyctaper’s being CCM4 cardiods) and soundboard feeds. The sound quality of both is excellent. Enjoy!

Its a nice little bit of synchronicity that today June 2 marks the 20th anniversary since the first time I saw moe. live. I attended that show at the late lamented Brownies on Avenue A after reading about the band in the print edition of the Village Voice. At that point, moe. was a new-ish band from Upstate that had just started to get some attention outside of their home region. By the end of the 1995, the band would never look back and clubs the size of Brownies were soon a thing of the past. But every once in a while, moe. returns to their roots and on Sunday night they played a semi-surprise show at the 200-capacity venue The Cutting Room on East 32nd Street.

The size of the venue meant that we were happy to run into a lot of old friends and that gave this show a nice intimate feel. The band seemed to recognize that and opened with several of their older numbers, including a monster “Timmy Tucker” — a song also played at Brownies two decades ago. The second set stepped into the present day, as the band proved that the potential that they showed all those years ago has become fully realized. This is a performing unit that has such an intuitive ability to read and react to each other so well that the transitions in the improv sections are stunningly tight. This set contained mostly instrumental passages built around the song “Kids”, which began and ended the set. In between we got a nice oldie in “Brent Black”, a powerful drum interlude, and two late-era instrumental numbers. We’ll see moe. again on a big stage at Mountain Jam this coming weekend, but for this one night it was fun to take a trip back to the old intimate venue shows.

I recorded this show from our little makeshift taper’s section in the middle of the floor about 20 feet from the stage. I utilized the Grace V3 in front of the Schoeps cards to add a little warmth and presence to what was essentially an “upfront” recording. Other than some fairly persistent crowd chatter (louder in the first set), the overall quality of this recording is quite outstanding. Enjoy!

Condo Fucks: May 22, 2015 Cake Shop – Flac/MP3/Streaming

The Lower East Side venue Cake Shop has lived in many ways a parallel existence to we here at NYCTaper. We’ve recorded and posted shows from Cake Shop somewhere in the range of one hundred occasions. We’ve hosted our annual CMJ day parties at Cake Shop for seven consecutive years. This year the venue is celebrating its 10th year (we just had our 8th anniversary), and the next few months will see some very special events. On Friday night it was an event that was literally a perfect match for NYCTaper. The show featured Yo La Tengo — a band very familiar to our readers — in their alter-ego guise as garage-rock band Condo Fucks. We’ve also captured the most recent Condo Fucks shows in the area, including the band’s last-ever show in venue at Maxwell’s in 2013, which I believe is the last time Condo Fucks actually played a show.

I’ll admit that it was somewhat surreal to see the three members of Yo La Tengo enter tiny basement stage at Cake Shop. We’ve seen hundreds of bands on this stage, but perhaps never one of the kind of legendary status that YLT possesses. The set began as all of the Condo Fucks shows we’ve seen have begun, with the instrumental Booker T track “Outrage” before the band personalized the Harmonics song “On the Warpath”. The remaining set-proper was a high-energy run through the band’s usual garage covers — Rascals, Flamin Groovies, The Exciters and the like. At the mid-set mark, the Condo Fucks were joined by long-time friend Gaylord Fields (“The Great Gaylord”) on vocals for a four-pack of songs that we’ve never seen the band perform before. The clear highlight was the extended version of the Swamp Dogg cult classic “Total Destruction To Your Mind” which we’re streaming below. A Condo Fucks show is a rare event and it was a very classy move that Yo La Tengo celebrated Cake Shop’s 10th Anniversary by treating the venue to this special show.

William Tyler: May 5, 2015 Bowery Ballroom & April 18, 2015 Chaz’s Bull City Records (Durham, NC) – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

William Tyler is a force. “That was a tragic song, in case you guys couldn’t pick up on that, because the lyrics are so clear” he laughed at Bowery Ballroom, where we caught him last week opening for Mikal Cronin. But Tyler might be wrong there. His playing is of such emotional heft that you can feel what he’s trying to say with his guitar, both wielded with grace and experimental verve. These two very different sets covered both some of the Lambchop guitarist’s newest solo material (the outstanding “Highway Anxiety”) along with tracks from his first solo outing, Deseret Canyon. That release saw its initial Merge reissue on Record Store Day show at Chaz’s Bull City Records, so it was appropriate that Tyler brought out two of its most treasured gems, “The Waltz of the Circassian Beauties” and “Crystal Palace, Sea of Glass” at that show. If you missed Deseret on Record Store Day, fear not: Merge will be bringing it out in wider release come early June.

It’s a testament to Tyler’s abilities as a player and storyteller that he kept the crowd whisper-quiet at Bowery, where the new track found itself nestled along nicely next to beloved songs from Impossible Truth and 2010’s Behold the Spirit. People may have been there to witness Cronin’s power-pop headlining affair, but they were smart enough to pay attention as Tyler played “Hotel Catatonia” — preceded by a typically Tyleresque introduction involving being locked in a TCBY freezer. (For the New Yorkers in the audience, that’d be The Country’s Best Yogurt). Likewise, the affair in North Carolina felt more like a gathering of friends that a proper concert, and that was just right for the afternoon vibe outside of Chaz’s. It was a great day to be outside, and a great day to be a music fan. It’s always a great day to see William Tyler, which is a good thing — Northeast crowds will get plenty of opportunities when he tours in June with Real Estate and Ty Segall.

I recorded the Bowery set with a soundboard feed from the legendary Kenny, together with Schoeps MK41V supercardiod microphones. The Bull City show was primarily a board feed from John Koelle, plus Schoeps MK4V microphones in front of the stage. The sound quality it outstanding. Enjoy!

Acid Mothers Temple: May 7, 2015 Mercury Lounge – Flac/MP3/Streaming

Of all the times that NYCTaper has captured Acid Mothers Temple and all of their many trips to NYC, I have personally never had the pleasure of recording the band live. Sure, there were tickets purchased and then eaten, missed connections and just plain bad timing, but it was all remedied on Thursday night when the band played one of their legendary space rock shows at Mercury Lounge. In my mind, I was prepared for the sonic onslaught and the noisy and trippy jams, but to see the band live is to be mesmerized by their proficiency and awed by their no-holds-barred approach to the material. There aren’t songs as much as themes that meld gradually into other themes and in some respects defy the archivist’s ability to track and provide a setlist. For me personally, there was a point during the trifeca of “Pink Lady Intro” (a fan-created title for an apparently untitled melodic jam segment) that segued neatly into the “OM Riff” and then crashed into “Pink Lady Lemonade” proper, when I truly appreciated the unique and powerful quality of AMT and their ability to play this style of music perhaps better than any other band, living or dead. Its really a treat that after twenty years and multiple groupings of personnel, that we are still able to experience AMT’s profound live shows. This may unbelievably be my first time, but it certainly won’t be the last. Acid Mothers Temple’s current US tour has another seven dates, all in the South and West, and ends on May 18th in San Diego.

I recorded this set with the Schoeps cards on a stand next to the soundboard and mixed with an excellent feed provided by the Merc’s FOH Val. The sound quality is quite outstanding. Enjoy!

Hurray For The Riff Raff: April 24, 2015 Bowery Ballroom – Flac/MP3/Streaming

We have followed the career trajectory of Hurray For The Riff from their very beginnings playing small clubs, basements and rooftops in NYC. We were so pleased to still be invited to join the party when the band celebrated their “Bowery Moment” last Friday night — a healthy sell-out of the Bowery Ballroom with friends and family in attendance. Its definitely a “we made it” night for bands and particularly sweet for HFTRR who’ve been working hard at their craft for a decade. The recent years have been kind them as we outlined when we caught them at the XPonential Festival last Summer, but that first Bowery night is always a special one. For the show the band worked through a setlist that featured primarily tracks from the last two albums Look Out Mama and Small Town Heroes but also a nifty Lucinda Williams cover (from their covers album) and one brand new song “Living in the City”, that Bronx-born Alynda Lee Segarra dedicated to NYC. Hurray For The Riff Raff is currently on an extensive US tour that is going through the South and Midwest before we’ll catch up with them again at Mountain Jam in June.

I recorded this set with the Schoeps cardioids mounted in our usual Bowery spot and mixed with an excellent board feed. The sound quality is superb. Enjoy!

Blitzen Trapper has always been a band who embraces their influences. Whether it be country-folk, 70s rock or even Zep, we’ve seen the band play some pointed covers over the years. I even had the pleasure of seeing lead singer Eric Early perform an outstanding mini-Dylan set at the Complete Last Waltz show in 2013.

For this year’s Record Store Day, Blitzen Trapper took it to the next level — releasing a limited edition vinyl of a complete performance of Neil Young’s Harvest recorded live in Portland last Fall. Accompanying the release, the band went on a small tour playing Harvest along with a selection of their own material. We caught the early show at City Winery on Friday, a venue that so impressed us during last weekend’s Mountain Goats shows. Despite the still-daylight starting time, the band came out ready to play with four of the own songs right out of the gate. The set’s centerpiece piece began with the familiar opening chords of the plaintive “Out on the Weekend” (streaming below), a performance so spot-on that we knew this would be a pleasure to behold. The remainder of Harvest was equally impressive — extraordinarily faithful to the original renditions while adding a very Trapper-like flavor to each number. The rest of the set was equally well played as the band worked through a fine selection of BT classics, highlighted by the well-jammed ten-minute “Thirsty Man” and a terrific version of “Furr” that we’re also streaming below.

I recorded this set with the Schoeps cards mounted on a pole about 10 feet in front of the soundboard and mixed with an excellent feed provided by the band’s touring FOH Engineer Nathan Vanderpool. The sound quality is superb. Enjoy!
