Kurt Vile: December 1, 2012 Terminal 5 – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

It is hard not to be overshadowed a bit when you have the task faced by Kurt Vile and the Violators, who opened the epic Dinosaur Jr. 25th Anniversary Show last weekend at Terminal 5. But, even facing an expectant crowd yearning for J. Mascis’ guitar shredding (and that of a slew of special guests, including Kurt himself), Vile was not to be outdone so easily.  Since we last caught one of his sets opening for Yo La Tengo at Maxwell’s last year, Kurt has continued to rack up accolades for his Matador-released Smoke Ring For My Halo and continued to improve and develop his live sound. That was on full display here, as the band’s psychedelic guitar pyrotechnics on songs like “Jesus Fever” from Halo dominated the room. The Violators on this night included a second guitarist from another Philly band and site favorite, Purling Hiss frontman Mike Polizze, who added his own unique style to this seven-song set. Getting to check out a set from Kurt Vile before an epic two-hour plus Dinosaur Jr. show was just the first of this night’s many awesome moments.

Johnny Fried Chicken Boy and I recorded this set from the floor in front of the soundboard, in a designated taping section graciously arranged for us by Dinosaur Jr. The microphones used were AKG 414s in the “mid/side” configuration, which allows the user to vary the amount of room reflections, and gave some nice clarity to the sound of this often-boomy room. Enjoy!

Port St. Willow: October 18, 2012 NYCTaper CMJ Day Show, Cake Shop – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

The documented connection between Port St. Willow frontman Nick Principe and childhood friend Peter Silbermann of The Antlers goes beyond their shared background. Both have a grandiosity and mournfulness to their sounds; both share a similar vocal style – a soaring falsetto that is its own instrument, at times obscuring the lyrics themselves. But where The Antlers lean more toward narrative storytelling and show a continued passion for rock dynamics, Principe is more comfortable in the realm of more obtuse, atmospheric composition. The songs on his debut record, Holiday, offer a variety of textures to plumb; some have described the record as “airy”. After catching an impressive set opening for The Antlers this summer at Glasslands, Port St. Willow was right at the top of the list of bands to play our unofficial CMJ Day show at Cake Shop, and this set delivered on the promise of that earlier experience. Principe, backed by his touring live band, played a set of six songs in a near-seamless 35-minute set. Even in mid-afternoon, the 10+ minute opener “Hollow” wowed the sizable crowd as Principe & Co. built his delicate compositions from scratch before our eyes. The recording that you have here is arguably the best quality of all that we recorded during this show, and other than a couple of spots where the vocal mic distorted during “Tourist”, it is virtually flawless. Futurebirds: October 27, 2012 Irving Plaza – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

Futurebirds continue to broaden their audience and appeal, as the Athens, GA band refines their live sound and, of course, books opening slots with well-loved acts like the Heartless Bastards. When I caught them last year at Union Pool, the venue and the atmosphere gave the proceedings a more boozy, party-band vibe. That isn’t necessarily untrue of this Irving Plaza set – it was Halloween weekend, the band was the only one of the night’s acts to roll in with Halloween costumes, and the crowd was drinking plenty – but the bigger stage and sound system gave the band a more commanding presence. Here, their music had a bit more of an epic scope, so much so that they reminded me of a pedal steel-playing, more countrified version of fellow Southerners My Morning Jacket. The band, whose last record is a live album that documents the strength of their live sound, is using these Heartless Bastards shows to work out new material, and three of those as-yet-unnamed tunes were on offer on this night. Together with regular tour classics like their cover of Stevie Nicks’ “Wild Heart” and “Johnny Utah”, this show reaffirmed my view that we’ll be seeing more of Futurebirds in the years to come.

I recorded this set with MBHO KA200N cardiod microphones from the center of the floor. Despite the challenges of the boomy room, with some TLC the recording is quite good. Enjoy!

Mac McCaughan: October 18, 2012 Merge Records CMJ Showcase, Mercury Lounge – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

Merge Records co-founder and Superchunk and Portastatic frontman Mac McCaughan has more than earned his beloved status in the indie rock community. His contributions to the Chapel Hill and Durham, NC music scenes, and music in general, could have taken two lifetimes, and his confessional, direct songwriting continues to resonate and remain fresh more than two decades into his music career. As for Merge, the label has been one of those remarkable and rare successes in music, remaining staunchly independent and committed to promoting quality releases – and finally earning a Grammy for its current mega-artist, Arcade Fire. So, after we wrapped up our own CMJ showcase down the street at Cake Shop, the NYCTaper crew headed over to Mercury Lounge where McCaughan joined William Tyler, Mount Moriah, Reigning Sound, Eleanor Friedberger and Telekinesis for Merge’s CMJ Showcase.

McCaughan performed as a solo act, an uncommon treat to see in the New York area. As usual, this set combined new and old Superchunk songs with Portastatic classics like “Autumn Got Dark.”  The set also included a brand new number that McCaughan said should appear on a Superchunk release next year, which we are streaming below. Though the singer-songwriter format lacked some of the punch of a normal Superchunk gig, it gave McCaughan’s lyrics and voice the spotlight. McCaughan’s exuberant, earnest delivery still comes across like that of a brash, young artist, and the themes of his writing continue to prove their timelessness. On a night that in many ways celebrated McCaughan’s success, this set was another one.

I recorded this set with a soundboard feed provided by house engineer Kevin Mazzarelli, with Schoeps MK5 microphones providing just a bit of room ambiance. The quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Heartless Bastards: October 27, 2012 Irving Plaza – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

On what was sure to be one of the year’s biggest “amateur nights” nightlife-wise, Heartless Bastards showed up at Irving Plaza and did what they do best – play the hell out of material new and old – without costumes, gimmicks or bullshit. As I mentioned back in February when they sold out Webster Hall (that recording here), Heartless Bastards have hit the big time, playing to the broader audiences that their classic blues-driven rock deserves. Even with a thousand costumed pub crawls and theme parties competing for one’s entertainment dollar on this night, the Bastards packed the place and gave us 90 minutes of unadorned rock n’ roll joy.  As in February, the addition of touring guitarist Mark Nathan added considerable meat to the band’s sound, giving them a guitar attack that is equal to the bigger spaces they’ve been playing. This set of 16 songs was slightly shorter than that in February, but no less powerful; songs from the band’s latest, Arrow are sounding better at each go round, as that record’s longer numbers like “Down In the Canyon” give the band opportunities for exploration. The crowd (mostly not costumed!), in turn, gave the band the level of enthusiasm they deserved. It doesn’t matter what night of the week or day of the year it might be; you can always count on the Heartless Bastards.

I recorded this set with my new MBHO KA200N cardiod microphones from the center of the floor.  The sound is excellent.  Enjoy!

Hans Chew: October 18, 2012 NYCTaper CMJ Day Show, Cake Shop – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

Hans Chew plays a brand of old-time, piano-driven rock n’ roll you may not have even realized you were nostalgic for. As the piano man for Brooklyn country-psych stalwarts D. Charles Speer & the Helix, Chew proved himself as a composer and vocalist in his own right on his debut album Tennessee & Other Stories.  Imbued with a honky-tonk barroom quality, Chew’s piano playing is even more central to his solo project than it is to his work with Speer, and that’s all to the good. As a Southerner now living in New York, Chew’s work remains rooted down south, and incorporates elements of country, bluegrass and Southern boogie. Like D. Charles Speer, Chew isn’t simply a revival act, but a modern performer who has taken a classic, regionally-rooted sound and imbued it with new ideas and new vitality.

We were thrilled to have a chance to invite Chew to play our fifth annual unofficial CMJ day show at Cake Shop, and Chew and the band delivered in a big way, with a set of almost all-new material that continued on Tennessee’s promise. “Strange Love” shone among the new numbers, with its funky guitar groove and catchy refrain. “Junker’s Blues”, which closed the set, was the kind of timeless-but-new number we expect from Chew, and it ended his part of the afternoon on a high note. We would have loved to have Chew at our show in any capacity, but getting this rare preview of new material made it an even bigger honor.

I recorded this set with house engineer Justin’s mix combined with Schoeps MK5 microphones in the cardiod setting mounted on the ceiling just in front of the stage lip and spread wide. The results are outstanding. Enjoy!

Corin Tucker Band: September 27, 2012 Mercury Lounge – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

Corin Tucker is 39 years old. She spent most of the 90s and a solid chunk of the 2000s fronting Sleater-Kinney with co-frontwoman Carrie Brownstein, and she has also played in the bands Cadallaca, Heartless Martin and Heavens to Betsy. Corin may be (by rock standards) “getting older”, but she sure is making it look like fun with the Corin Tucker Band, now on their second LP.

“Groundhog Day”, one of the standout tracks on her band’s latest, Kill My Blues, tells her current story with its opening lines

Huh? Que pasa? I’ve just woken up / Like Rip Van Winkle in a denim mini skirt / Wait, you see, now, I took a rest  / I took some time to be a mom and have some kids

The rest of the song takes Tucker through some familiar territory for her – a disappointment with the state of modern feminism, a bewilderment at a cause that she feels is stagnating – “Instead of going forward, where the hell we going now?”.  So yes – Tucker is no longer 22, and yes, she is a mom. But take one listen to Kill My Blues, and take a look at the band that took the stage at Mercury Lounge on a recent Wednesday night, and tell me she doesn’t still have the fire. Corin’s first solo record, the critically-loved 1,000 Years, was touted as a more subdued “middle-aged mom record” in her words, Kill My Blues is a caffeinated, lacerating return to the form that made her contributions to Sleater-Kinney so memorable.

Which is to say, Tucker has the kind of voice that’ll rattle your cage when in full throat, and she lets it rip on most of these new songs. While many of her contemporaries in like-minded bands could hold their own in terms of raw power, Tucker’s voice is notable for her control and unique tonality as well as its power. Songs like “I Don’t Wanna Go”, Tucker’s tribute to Olympia, WA punk scene fixture Natalie Cox, push those vocals to the max, and live, Tucker is even more visceral than on record. This night’s lineup of the Corin Tucker Band featured Portland journeyman Dave Depper on bass, Seth Lorinczi (of Golden Bears) on guitar and keys, and Sarah Lund (of Unwound) on the drums, and they proved to be a formidable rhythm section, so tight that the show sounded like a studio outing at points. But for fans who thought that 1,000 Years was too subdued, Tucker had an answer, too, as the band tore through “Doubt” to close out the main set with a squall of perfect Pacific Northwest-style noise. For an encore, the band served up two covers, including Blondie’s “Atomic” and “Three Minute Hero” by the UK ska greats The Selecter. Seeing Corin Tucker Band will certainly help sate your Sleater-Kinney craving; it might also kill your fear of getting “older”.

I recorded this set with a flawless soundboard feed of the house mix by Jeff Hylton Simmons, the band’s FOH, together with Schoeps MK41 supercardiod microphones in my usual location. This recording demonstrates how good the club’s new PA system is, and it could well be my personal best Mercury Lounge recording of this year. Enjoy!

Magic Trick: August 16, 2012 Mercury Lounge – FLAC / MP3 / Streaming

As avowed fans of The Fresh & Onlys, we were thrilled to get a chance to see their frontman Tim Cohen’s bedroom project, Magic Trick, come to life as a full band for a set at Mercury Lounge. While Cohen’s lo-fi solo efforts have their charms, the songs feel more fully-realized with a real band, outshining even the latest official release, Ruler of the Night. Cohen and the band took a rapidly-filling room through many of Ruler’s new numbers, as well as a few from his older catalog (all of which can be heard on his bandcamp page). Compared to the Onlys, Cohen’s Magic Trick material is a bit more subdued and has less over psychedelic overtones; these songs veer much closer to confessional singer-songwriting than Nuggets-era jams. What hasn’t changed is Cohen’s knack for hooks and compelling songwriting. “Same People” is one of those songs that will stick in your head for days, while “Weird Memory” has a similar appeal to Real Estate’s blissfully diffident stylings. The Onlys have a tour and new record on the way shortly, but Magic Trick deserves a look on its own.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK41 microphones and an excellent soundboard feed by Kevin of the Mercury Lounge.  The quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Sonny and the Sunsets: August 16, 2012 Mercury Lounge – FLAC / MP3 / Streaming

Sonny & the Sunsets don’t make it entirely clear whether they want you to take them seriously. In the “yes” column you’ve got frontman Sonny Smith’s lifelong musicanhood and decade-long history of releasing records, many of which are of estimable quality. Smith’s latest, the aptly-titled Longtime Companion, arrives on 180-gram yellow vinyl and sounds like a well-worn LP you’ve had in your collection for years. An instant old friend, of sorts.

But then, you have to take into account a freewheeling show like their recent visit to Mercury Lounge, where a Smith, calling himself “El Borracho” (“the drunkard”), played a loose, at-times shambling set that offered up antics and anecdotes aplenty. Sonny comes off like a damaged Dylan, married to equal parts Robert Earl Keen and Todd Snider.  Country-rootsy on acid and Jameson, Sonny seemed thrilled to spend a significant chunk of the playing in the crowd, looking at his bemused band members onstage. Smith covered material from the three Sunsets albums, including the standouts “Dried Blood”, “My Mind Messed Up” and “Too Young To Burn”. Smith plays with the fearlessness of someone whose musical career hasn’t always gone easy; much like his music itself, he is raw and compelling. After about an hour of the band’s regular set, Sonny decided to take things into stranger territory, including a lengthy beat-esque piece about aliens. The set closed out with “Love Among Social Animals” and “Planet of Women”. Sonny may have his tongue planted firmly in cheek at times, but that’s ultimately part of his charm. As with his much-talked-about art piece “100 Records” where Sonny made, yes, 100 45s paired with various images, he is willing to take risks, and more often than not, they succeed.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK41 microphones and a flawless soundboard feed from Kevin, the club’s head engineer.  The sound is excellent, though you will notice the emphasis on the soundboard increasing toward the end as the crowd gets chattier (read: more drunk).  Enjoy!

A Sam Prekop show changed my life. I was nineteen years old, set up to record in the center of a tiny venue in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Halfway through the set, a guy came up to me who turned out to be my college newspapers music editor. Impressed that I was one of only two people from our school (not UNC) who bothered to come to see acts like this (Sam was touring behind his self-titled 1999 solo debut), he more or less offered me the job. My relationship with music, and with writing, was never the same hence.

Since then, Prekop has continued to make his own unique brand of jazz-and-lounge-inflected rock, both as a solo act and with the better-known Sea and Cake, still considered his primary gig. A recent Sea and Cake show at Bowery Ballroom confirmed the continuing vitality and appeal of that band, who have a new record coming out. But Prekop, who for years has incorporated African and Brazilian rhythms into his guitar work, has more ideas than one band can handle. So, while continuing to record with Sea and Cake, he has put out a diverse range of solo records, from his eponymous 1999 effort that was essentially Sea and Cake-style material, to his latest, Old Punch Card, which finds Prekop taking a radical, ambient turn with his sound. This show at Mercury Lounge, featuring Prekop and fellow Sea and Cake bandmate Archer Prewitt (also a great solo artist in his own right), gave fans a miniature retrospective of Prekop’s career. Kicking off with a new, untitled ambient jam reminiscent of Old Punch Card, the set then evolved into a mix of Prekop solo songs from the last twelve years, as well as Sea and Cake classics like “Do Now Fairly Well” and “The Staircase”. Prekop and Prewitt played with the easy rapport of long-time collaborators, and even without any particular stage adornments or a backing band, the pair held the attention of the packed house for the full hour.

Along with the Mercury Lounge recording, which is my usual mix of Schoeps MK41 microphones and a soundboard feed, I am offering the Sam Prekop show from North Carolina, which has not been distributed (at least by me) since the year 2000, as a bonus download.  The North Carolina recording, while made with a decent rig, is not comparable in quality to the Mercury Lounge show (in large part due to the jackasses talking in the audience), but features Sam playing with a full band, and is more focused on material from Sam Prekop.  Enjoy!
