Chris Forsyth & The Solar Motel Band: December 12, 2015 Trans-Pecos

Over the past couple years—and 2015 especially—this site has developed quite a rapport with Chris Forsyth & The Solar Motel Band, resulting in six separate recordings in 2015 alone, plus a pair from 2013 and 2014. So it was only fitting that we booked this year-end engagement at one of the few clubs Forsyth & co. had yet to play: Trans-Pecos. I’m happy to report that the show was a raging success and that all were rewarded with what is truly the standout set of the year. Having recently announced the second proper album with The Solar Motel Band on No Quarter, The Rarity of Experience (preorder it here!), the band graced us with not only a pair of newer tracks we hadn’t heard before (the impeccably titled “The First Ten Minutes of Cocksucker Blues,” and “Boston Street Lullaby”), but played some older ones we hadn’t heard in a while either. The set’s centerpiece is a sprawling three-parter, consisting of the older “Paranoid Cat” into a transitional jam that takes us into “Solar Motel Part II.” A twenty-five minute epic that left the room spinning. Easing us out of 2015 with the quiet closer “Boston Street Lullaby,” we look forward to what 2016 has in store for Chris Forsyth. And no doubt, we’ll be there to capture more exciting shows to come.

I recorded this set with the mics set up at the stage lip, combined with a board feed from Trans-Pecos FOH, Ned. The results are outstanding. Enjoy!

NE-HI: October 15, 2015 NYCTaper Unofficial CMJ Show, Cake Shop

Chicago’s NE-HI have only been around since 2014, but they’ve already made a name for themselves in the local scene with their sharp hooks and the immediacy of their live performance. All of that was on display back in October at our unofficial CMJ day show at Cake Shop, in which the band kicked things off with their earworm single “Drag” and kept the momentum up throughout. These guys are fellow travelers with beloved Chicagoans Twin Peaks (our recording of them here) and it’s easy to see the kinship between sounds. They, like Twin Peaks, are vets of Chicago’s DIY scene, but their album production is straight-up professional, befitting the quality of their sound. Having now been signed to a major tour promoter, I’d say it’s likely we’ll be seeing NE-HI on many more bills come festival time. If they pass through NYC before then, make sure not to miss them.

I recorded this set in the same manner as the other recordings from the day, with Schoeps MK4V at the stage lip together with a soundboard feed. The sound quality is outstanding. Enjoy!

Kevin Devine: December 11, 2015 Bell House (Devinyls Splits Show)

We always knew Kevin Devine was one of the nicest guys around — what I didn’t know was how ubiquitous is that opinion. Kevin’s current project is the Devinyls Splits, a six-volume series released in semi-monthly intervals by Bad Timing Records where Devine pairs with another performer on a double-sided 7″. The roster of artists who have joined in this project is both impressive and eclectic — from indie-vet Matthew Caws (Nada Surf) to new punk frontperson Meredith Graves (Perfect Pussy) to neo-folk hero Mike Kinsella (Owen). Kevin’s ability to attract such a variety of artists is admirable, but it was astounding that when he planned a tour for the series and invited all six of the artists — every single one of them agreed to play the three-show run. The opening night of the tour was Friday at Bell House and if the Kevin Devine three-album show from a few years ago (recording here) was a wealth of riches, this year’s event was even more fan-friendly. In the end, the show featured two lengthy sets that lasted over four hours, offered seven guests including mini-sets from Laura Stevenson, Tigers Jaw, Cymbals Eat Guitars, Owen, and Matthew Caws, many collaborations between the artists, some neat covers, and interspersed within it all, twenty-four Kevin Devine (either solo or with The Goddamn Band) performances. But somehow the night never seemed to lose any momentum despite many stage changes. Ultimately, it was Kevin at the center of it all, and as his fans intrinsically trust him, on this night he and his friends delivered in spades.

I recorded this set with the Schoeps cardioids clamped to the front rail of the soundboard and blended with a superbly mixed soundboard by Bell House FOH Dave. The sound quality is quite excellent. Enjoy!

Tom Carter, Chris Corsano, Carter Thornton: December 5, 2015 Trans-Pecos (Solo and Trio Sets)

These are the moments that Trans-Pecos was meant for: daring performances by a crew of avant-garde artists, coming together at the night’s endpoint for a brave and spectacular jam. If you’re not familiar with these players, Tom Carter has appeared on this site several times. The experimental guitarist and co-founder of the band Charalambides continued his long tradition of exceptional work with this year’s Long Time Underground, released earlier this year by Three Lobed Recordings. Carter Thornton, who I hadn’t had the pleasure of seeing before, is a “guitarist” of a sort, but also a builder of instruments and master manipulator of electronic sounds. He’s appeared with a number of well-know underground acts, including fellow Three Lobed alums Enos Slaughter and Gnaw, a doom metal supergroup of sorts. And Chris Corsano — who we saw all over the place during the 2012 Hopscotch Music Festival as its “resident improviser” — is a drum innovator who turns most people’s conception of that instrument on its head.

This night featured each of the three players performing a solo set, with Thornton followed by Carter and then Corsano. Thornton played two new compositions, “Right Turn on Green” and “Who Shot JR” followed by Carter performing a new short improv and two Long Time Underground tracks. Corsano’s improvisation was, as expected, an otherworldly experience, but even that had to take a back seat to the first-time-ever trio performance that followed, when the group combined to create a dense composition featuring electronic sounds, guitars and Corsano’s drumming, which the group is calling “Twelve-Five.” This is something that’ll reward repeat listens, as the careful listener can pick out the roles each of the artists is filling at different times during the performance. We are thrilled to share all of these unique pieces of music.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK4V microphones at the stage lip, mixed at certain times with the soundboard feed to bolster the electronic sound. The sound quality is outstanding. Enjoy!

New Pope: November 21, 2015 Trans Pecos + Secret Project Robot (Two Shows!)

After guitarist and vocalist Clara Hunter Latham of the Brooklyn band Starring moved to the same small Massachusetts town as Oneida’s Bobby Matador, it was inevitable that the two would get together and play some music. The band New Pope has evolved from that relationship and two weeks back the band made the trip south and played their first ever shows in NYC, an afternoon show at Trans Pecos opening for Fox Millions Duo (recording here) and later at the Oneida potluck show at Secret Project Robot (recording here). At Pecos, the band was a four-piece accompanied by a second keyboard and violin and performed a thirty-five minute set consisting of four songs. The first three tracks are key-based psych but the fourth song has Clara’s guitar out front in an almost surf-rock style. For the late show at SPR, New Pope was joined by Kid Millions on drums and the set took on a different feel — more driving and less spacey. Both sets prove that New Pope is a band with great personnel and great potential and we hope that they make more trips to NYC in the future.

I recorded the Pecos set with the Schoeps mounted in front of the stage and mixed with a board feed of primarily vocals. Eric recorded the SPR set with the AKGs in front of the board and mixed with a board feed. Both sets sound quite excellent. Enjoy!

Car Seat Headrest: October 15, 2015 NYCTaper Unofficial CMJ Show, Cake Shop

Twenty-two year old Will Toledo, who performs as Car Seat Headrest, is one of those songwriters whose skill actually matches his high level of output and obvious ambition. That’s a clear reason how, at a young age, and after already writing, performing and producing eleven albums (!!!) on his own on bandcamp, he’s found himself signed to Matador Records, where he’s about to release Teens of Style. Lest you dump this music in the category of mumbly lo-fi bedroom recordings that we’ve all seen a hundred times before, I’d point you to the very first song of this set at our NYCTaper Unofficial CMJ Show, “The Ending of Dramamine,” which was fourteen minutes of off-kilter pop-inflected rock reminiscent of bands like Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, the Cars and R.E.M. Or there’s how Toledo, prior to his affiliation with a “big time” label, had already sold 25,000 copies of those bandcamp-only releases. Oh, and those earlier efforts weren’t made in a bedroom — the story goes that the only place Toledo could find peace and quiet to record was the family car, hence the band name.

Toledo’s songs are lyrically dense, at times funny, at times teenage-confessional, unflinchingly honest. We were excited that Matador offered us the chance to have this artist close our show, because Teens of Style has already appeared on many best-of lists since its October 30 release. All of these songs appeared in some form prior to Teens of Style, but expect to hear brand-new versions of the last three — “Times To Die,” “Something Soon” and “Oh! Starving” — on that record. In the meantime, enjoy these right-on live performances, and expect much more to come, including a show on December 5 at Baby’s All Right.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK4V microphones in front of the stage and a soundboard feed from Cake Shop engineer Jeff. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

DVA: November 1, 2015 Trans Pecos

The story of how this “NYCTaper Presents” show came together is rather simple — we saw an open date at the tail end of DVA’s most recent US tour and arranged for the band to play that night at Trans Pecos. As you may recall, it was at a Northern Spy show at Pecos in early 2014 where we first saw and instantly admired this quite unique Czech duo. DVA is one of those bands that defies musical categorization. The duo loop a variety of captured sounds and perform their songs over an orchestra of loops. Its really something quite remarkable to see live. For their Pecos return, DVA performed a set similar to their previous visit which was exactly why we brought them back. The band featured three of the seven songs from their most recent album, Nipomo, released last year on Northern Spy Records.

I recorded this set with the Sennheiser cards mounted at the front of the stage and mixed with a board feed provided by house FOH Joe. The sound quality is superb. Enjoy!

Invisible Familiars: November 23, 2015 Manhattan Inn

Jared Samuel’s name shows up a good bit around these parts; even at a young age (tonight was almost his 26th birthday) the guy has already established himself as a go-to player for touring and local acts alike. Invisible Familiars gives Samuel a chance to stretch his wings as frontman, and he proves that no matter the setting, he’s able to deliver a compelling performance. In this case, he and his band (which has a rotating cast that includes Rachel Housley on backup vocals) performed in the round at the Manhattan Inn, which is becoming a go-to Greenpoint venue thanks to Hypnocraft taking over as the booking agent. It’s not always easy to give a full-on rock performance on the floor of a restaurant that advertises itself as a piano bar, but Invisible Familiars pulled that off, even with a more stripped-down instrumental lineup.

We’ve also seen Samuel appear several times with The Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger, Sean Lennon’s latest vehicle, and Invisible Familiars’ live sound suggests that not all of the Beatlesque flourishes of the former band came from the Lennon side. Samuel’s work shows a ready acquaintance with both the melody and vocal stylings that the world’s most revered rock band pioneered, but that classicism is anchored on the band’s 2015 debut Disturbing Wildlife with a delightfully modern dose of the weird, delivered in the form of keyboard and electronic flourishes. Those pieces weren’t on hand for this show, which required the songs to lean more heavily on their songwriting and melody. Needless to say, Invisible Familiars scored without those accoutrements, especially on “Clever Devil” and “Elaine Serene,” as well as “Digger’s Invitation.” The latter song is likely the source of another favorable comparison Samuel has earned — to Marc Bolan — and this pure rock song swaggers in a manner familiar to any T. Rex fan. There were also a couple of choice covers in this set, including of Henry Mancini’s “Lujon.” Don’t wait until next year to see Invisible Familiars — you can catch them at a Sunday residency at the Ace Hotel in Manhattan all this month.

I recorded this set with Audio Technica 4051 microphones in front of the band, together with a soundboard feed that primarily supplied vocals. There are a few moments where the vocal PA distorted, but for the most part, the sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Oneida: November 21, 2015 Secret Project Robot (Pre-Thanksgiving Potluck)

There is no band more emblematic of the Brooklyn music community than Oneida. From jam sessions in the band’s former Ocropolis studio to the Thank Your Parents weekender; from Brahloweens past to the NYCTaper Anniversary show; from the holiday Oneida Fest at the old Knit to this year’s Thanksgiving potluck, there’s a truly unique binding of community around Oneida’s music. On the weekend before Thanksgiving, friends and family gathered for a celebration of music and food. Admission was free at the door if you brought food and I can almost guarantee not a dollar was exchanged. Around two full tables of food including a turkey, plus all the trimmings and desserts you could imagine, friends old and new gathered to eat off paper plates and see two long-form Oneida sets bookending a set from New Pope (featuring Bobby and Kid Millions of course). For the first set Oneida is joined by Dave Kadden on clarinet; and for the second it’s an epic, extended nine-piece Oneida barreling through forty improvised minutes. To give thanks for Oneida seems a bit silly when there are so many other things to be thankful for. Yet there’s something here greater than just a band or a collection of songs and records—and it’s that intangible greater thing, call it community or simply shared experience, for which we can all be thankful.

I recorded this set with the AKG’s flown high at the back of the room, with a board feed from Secret Project Robot FOH Erik, which supplied much of the vocals. The sound isn’t perfect, but it captures an event. Enjoy!

Fox Millions Duo: November 21, 2015 Trans Pecos

Fox Millions Duo is in many ways an inevitable joining of talent. Greg Fox and Kid Millions are undoubtedly two of the most talented and ingenious percussionists alive today — and they also happen to both be incredibly prodigious and work within the same general musical circles. Both have appeared on the pages of this site dozens of times in many different configurations. Indeed, it was the 2012 NYCTaper 5th Anniversary concert where Greg Fox joined Millions and Oneida onstage for the first and, until later on this evening of this show, the last time. But it wasn’t until the 2014 recording sessions and the 2015 release of Lost Time (Thrill Jockey Records) that the Fox Millions Duo became a reality. Lost Time was released this Summer, but an actual live performance of the Duo is a rare event. So this past weekend, a recently booked afternoon show at Trans Pecos gave us the opportunity to catch the two together. Interestingly, the performance did not include any of the album’s material but was instead a single piece that is essentially a work in progress. The two were seated at a single snare drum in a similar configuration to Millions’ Man Forever project, but with an added wrinkle. Fox attached what appeared to be a guitar E-bow to the outside of the drum and thereafter through a cable to his laptop. The result was the activation of a sound sample upon each beat. I’ve titled this interesting number “E-bow Piece”, but in reality it is an untitled work that gives us great anticipation of a future Fox Millions release.

I recorded this set with the Schoeps cards at the front of the stage and mixed with a fine board feed. The interesting aspect of this recording is that the mics were primarily the drum beats while the board is primarily the E-bow samples. I’ve mixed the two sources to capture the music as it sounded in the center of the room. The result is quite excellent. Enjoy!
