Weak Signal: May 13, 2022 Tubby’s (Kingston, NY)

The immediate first impression of Weak Signal is “this dude’s guitar tone is going to tear my face off.” You could stop at that and have a decent idea of what the band is about but thanks to our own EricPH Weak Signal is now on the internet archive giving us several excellent live options to examine. Close consideration of these recordings reveal more than a monstrous guitar tone; beautiful and expressive song writing, excellent harmonies and one of the most engaging rhythm sections operating today. 

The rhythm section, Tran on drums and Sasha on bass, present the aural equivalent of a train coming down the tracks a bit too fast. It feels out of control, like it could crash at any time but then pulls safely to its destination right on schedule. It’s that possibility of collapse and the thrill of evading it that makes this band so exciting to listen to. In many ways it reminds me of the great early Kinks rhythm section of Mick Avory and Peter Quaife. 

This was the first show with the full band together in six months and features songs from all their records as well as a live debut of a new tune called “Don’t Want No Problems.” Weak Signal has several upcoming dates including two nights opening for Pavement! Go see them, you won’t regret it.

I recorded this from the soundboard with my MBHO mics and a mono board feed from the FOH engineer Kyle. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Mountain Movers: April 30, 2022 Tubby’s (Kingston, NY)

Much has changed in Kingston since the start of Covid. Many of the long-standing hubs of the community (RIP BSP, Boitson’s, Tony’s) sit empty while revitalization and housing prices march onward. Tubby’s, thankfully, has not only weathered the storm, but seems to be steadily gaining steam. 

At its core Tubby’s is a local hang. On any given evening it may be the gathering spot for local members of the LGBTQ+ community, Simpsons fans, Deadheads, Goths or just folks looking for a cold beer after work. This beautiful Spring evening was a double bill with Mountain Movers and Wet Tuna, a night for the heads. 

Mountain Movers have appeared on this website several times over the years, and I am happy to add another recording to the list. The New Haven CT quartet pulled from their entire catalog including several tracks from their excellent 2021 release “World What World”. The set ended with a particularly transportive 10-minute workout of “Unknown Hours” exploring all the corners of noise, psychedelia, atmosphere, and Rock they are known for. 

I recorded this set from my normal spot atop the riser next to the soundboard with my MBHO mics and a mono board feed from Tubby’s FOH engineer Brian. I am quite happy with the results!

SAVAK released their last LP, Rotting Teeth in the Horse’s Mouth, on April 10, 2020. To say that was a weird time would be an understatement. I vividly recall exploring my former neighborhoods of Ditmas Park and Midwood, frequently soundtracked by that new LP in those early days.

Now it’s two years later and… here we are. SAVAK’s latest record, Human Error / Human Delight arrives on Friday and I even got to see them play live for the first time in probably three years. Too long! But like those early days, SAVAK’s set from last Friday is a much needed salve. There’s nothing quite like live music and SAVAK’s energy is infectious as ever. This was my first chance to hear some of the new songs, like the standout album-opener “No Blues No Jazz,” “Dealers,” “Cold Ocean,” and a riotous, closing “Set Apart.” SAVAK steer full-throttle towards delight!

SAVAK have a few upcoming dates around NYC, including one at The P.I.T. on May 12, plus opening slots for Jawbox (!) in July and June of 44 (!!) in October, both at Le Poisson Rouge.

I recorded this set with the mics clamped to the soundboard booth, combined with a board feed from FOH Will. I mixed those down and then Sohrab provided some additional mastering. The results are excellent. Enjoy!

Tonstartssbandht: October 28, 2021 Market Hotel

In what is perhaps the most NYCTaper-friendly tour announcement ever, last week it was revealed that Ryley Walker and Tonstartssbandht will co-headline a six-date Northeast tour in March that will arrive in New York at Bowery Ballroom on St. Patrick’s Day. I’ve already purchased the Bowery tickets, but we’ve had some serious discussions about doing multiple dates on this tour, with the mostly likely being the Portland Maine and Providence Rhode Island dates on the weekend after the Thursday night in New York. We shall see, but suffice to say its an exciting tour that should not be missed by us, or by anyone serious about good music.

But the Bowery will not be the first post-pandemic show in New York for our old friends Andy and Edwin White. In late October, they toured for Petunia, the band’s first proper album in three years and played a sold-out show at our own Market Hotel. I can not properly express how thoroughly renewing it was for us to see one of our favorite bands and favorite people play live again. Nevermind that the crowd also included a bunch of old friends, this night was just magic from start to finish. The band’s set concentrated primarily on the new album material, and flowed as their sets always do, in remarkable continuity. The energy was peak throughout and hit a crescendo during the set-closing “Sorcerer“, ending a wonderful night in truly excellent fashion. We expect more of these peaks on the tour in March.

I recorded this set with the installed Neumann hypercards blended with an excellent board feed mixed by Osaro. We are very pleased with the sound quality of this capture. Enjoy!

Ryley Walker: September 12, 2021 Tubby’s (Kingston, NY)

Since my last post here (on March 9, 2020) New Yorkers have sought refuge in all kinds of places and a bewildering number of distractions. Vinyl record sales surged even more, Instagram overflowed with DIY baking, sedentary people discovered hiking, gym rats discovered the joys of being sedentary. New Yorkers moved to the Hudson Valley, New Jersey, Florida or farther-flung destinations.

Ryley Walker ended up in Vermont, running his nascent but growing label, Husky Pants and, as is his norm, recording and releasing a slew of new music. Course In Fable, the follow-up to 2018’s Deafman Glance, represents another stunning evolution in his sound. Prog-rock courses through its compositions, recorded with pristine sonics by Tortoise vet John McEntire. If anyone worried whether Ryley’s first post-sobriety album would lose the magic of his blurrier past, the answer is not only no, but the exact opposite. This is Walker’s most self-possessed work to date, bringing all of collaborators Ryan Jewell, Andrew Scott Young, and Bill McKay’s musical strengths firmly under one voice, with lyrics that can be evocative but obtuse as well as devastatingly direct. If Course In Fable is remembered as the finest album of Walker’s career, it will be worthy of the title.

It made sense to see these songs in the tiny but welcoming back room of Tubby’s, a venerable Kingston bar reinvented as a serious live music venue. The space itself feels like a refuge; its size compels an intimacy and familiarity that have been hard to come by for most of us in this part of the world recently. I’m not sure I’ve been to another venue of its size that has bookings at the level they do, and I hope Tubby’s keeps it up.

This show featured most of the Course In Fable lineup, with Walker joined by Jewell and Young, and the trio moved through this set of later-period (Course and Deafman Glance) tunes with aplomb. The Course tunes stayed fairly true to their original arrangements, with “The Halfwit In Me” serving as the 18-minute improvisational centerpiece of the set. While I’d love to hear some of those talents applied to the live new songs eventually, for this go, the thrill came in hearing the original arrangements live in a room, that special kind they were written for.

Ryley is on a west coast swing right now, and will be back east supporting Dinosaur Jr. to close out the year, followed by… well, his usual slew of tour dates in 2022. Just how it should be. See his tour dates here.

This recording was an extra-special collaboration between Kliked and I, using a combination of my Schoeps omnidirectional mics up front, his MBHO’s at the soundboard, and Zoots’ feed of the (mostly) vocals. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Chris Forsyth: August 4, 2021 Sultan Room

Chris Forsyth returned to live performance in the most exactly perfect way possible. Like most performers, he hasn’t played a proper show in more than a year, but for his two-show return last week, Chris compiled an incendiary quartet of top notch musicians, all of whom are quite familiar to these pages. Tom Malach is a founder and lead guitarist of site favorites Garcia Peoples, Ryan Jewell has appeared here about a dozen different formats, mainly with Ryley Walker, and Doug McCombs has appeared here with the seminal Tortoise and with his Brokeback project. Forsyth himself has appeared many times on this site, and always brings the goods. But this show was an entirely different animal.

If this performance was an indication, Chris Forsyth emerged from lockdown with well honed new material and having maintained the precision of his playing. The quartet that performed at Sultan Room last week (and Philly the following night) were tight, focused, and thoroughly in sync. The four new songs (and new cover) were presented in almost completed form (except for the working titles) and as if these four musicians had been playing the compositions regularly. That is to say that this show flowed from start to finish and left the boisterous and rapt crowd frankly stunned at the quality of the performance.

I recorded this set with the outdoor-friendly large diaphragm Neumann microphones set up front and center of the stage and mixed with a soundboard feed provided by the most excellent Imoni Cole Palmer. I’m extremely pleased with the quality of this recording and hope you enjoy as much as the sold out crowd and I did that night.

Chris Forsyth is returning to the West Coast for a show on October 9, 2021 at the Crystal Cavern in Oakland. The band will include Doug McCombs and Ryan Jewell. This is Chris’s first show in California since 2014. Tickets are available [here].

Garcia Peoples: June 4, 2021 Industry City

Welcome back! Its been a hellish 16 months for everyone we know. No one was spared, and many friends of the site went through trauma that no person should have to endure. But as far as we can tell, this existential nightmare seems to be coming to close. Today New York State celebrated a 70% vaccination rate, and much of the City is re-opening, including live performances.

Last weekend we experienced our first real “concert” event in forever, and it could not have been a more spiritually and emotionally fulfilling night. Garcia Peoples are obviously one of the site’s favorite bands, and most importantly a favorite set of people, so it was quite appropriate that this would be the NYCTaper coming out party. In the open air at Industry City, and with GP as a soundtrack, we grooved while smiling at friends we haven’t seen in months and months, shook hands, hugged, and generally felt true enjoyment. For their part, the band debuted a bunch of outstanding new material, jammed on some classics, and sounded tight and focused. They are truly back and we couldn’t be happier.

Garcia Peoples are adding new shows to their touring schedule on a regular basis. At this point, they are playing 3 dates in consecutive months at Turk’s Inn (Sultan Room roof) in Brooklyn, beginning with a show next week (June 23) and then appearances at the Treefort Festival and Lockn Fest. Dates are being added, check out their bandcamp page for updates.

This show was recorded with Schoeps cards set up at the soundboard tent, and mixed with a board feed. There were issues with the elements and a humming noise from a generator, but overall we’re pretty pleased with the sound quality. Enjoy!

Pylon Reenactment Society: January 5, 2019 Market Hotel

Last week, it was announced that legendary Athens GA post-punk band Pylon will be releasing a comprehensive box set which will include all of their official releases, many unreleased tracks, and a 200-page book documenting the history of this incredibly influential group. Pylon Box will be available through New West Records on November 6, 2020.

For a band with such a lasting legacy, it was truly a blessing to have recorded the original band, including what was ultimately the last show the band played before the sad and untimely death of guitarist Randy Bewley in 2009. In 2014, lead singer Vanessa Briscoe Hay formed the Pylon Reenactment Society. At a gig we recorded at Mercury Lounge in July of 2018, it was clear that this new band was not just a tribute to the late great Pylon, but was a natural and organic continuation of the legacy of the band with top notch musicians who were friends with the original members. Our experiences motivated me to invite Pylon Reenactment Society to return to NYC in January of 2019 to perform at Market Hotel.

The Market Hotel show was yet another confirmation that although the original Pylon is a perfect subject for retrospective box sets, the current band is still a terrific outfit and a pure pleasure to experience live. This set included not only all of the classic numbers you’d hope to hear, but some extremely promising new material. In this current involuntary “break” from seeing shows, its great to remember the types of events that keep us coming back to see bands like Pylon.

I recorded this set with the installed AT mics mixed with an excellent soundboard feed from Eric. The sound quality is superb. Enjoy!

Jeff Rosenstock: December 23, 2019 Trans-Pecos

Its honestly hard for me to be objective about this concert for some pretty obvious reasons — including my involvement with the venue. But the real reason is because Jeff Rosenstock is truly one of the best people in music today. Jeff played four consecutive Monday nights at Trans-Pecos in December, and each night benefitted a different charitable organization. Each night also was a collection of coats for the homeless. There was no set admission price to the shows, but a suggested donation. And Jeff and his fans really came through, as over $10,000 was raised over the four shows and the funds were sent to Safe Horizon, Willie Mae Rock Camp, Educated Little Monsters, and Black Lives Matter.

We talked and the final night was Jeff’s favorite of the shows. It also happens to feature the most excellent Laura Stevenson (congrats on the baby!) in a guest spot for a couple of songs. Jeff and Laura are long time friends who also played together in Bomb The Music Industry! and the energy between the two was obvious. As Jeff moved to LA at the end of 2019, this show was also a goodbye of sorts, so the emotions are palpable. All in all, a tremendous night for a variety of reasons, and a show we’re happy to offer as a glimmer of hope in these tragic times.

This set was mixed by Manny and recorded in the thumb drive of the soundboard and the quality is outstanding. Enjoy!

Howlin’ Rain: February 21, 2020 Union Pool + August 7, 2019 Brooklyn Bowl

Howlin’ Rain rolled in from the West Coast into Union Pool a few Friday nights ago and proceeded to deliver a lick-filled, thoroughly jam-forward set that gave us all a quick reminder of why the band’s latest record is Under the Wheels: Live From the Coasts Vol 1. Many fewer bands cry out for the live album treatment as compared to those pushing bad-sounding, paint-by-numbers dreck. Rest assured that Howlin’ Rain are solidly among the good guys; not only does the new record boast an almost completely different setlist than this show, it’s also an outstanding recording that foregrounds Ethan Miller’s guitar pyrotechnics. If you attended this show and didn’t grip a copy of Under the Wheels afterward, I hope it’s because you already bought one.

As to this set, the band kept things loose, giving us seventy minutes’ worth of music in the form of seven songs, including a typically extended Calling Lightning Pt. 2″ and “Under the Wheels” — both of which feel like strong candidates for what I have to assume will be an Under the Wheels: Vol 2 at some point in the future.

We’re also offering a bonus recording here, with Eric PH’s capture of a Brooklyn Bowl barnburner from the band’s extended NYC run last year. It take the place of being there, but making a quick date with these recordings and the new LP ought to perk your ears for the band’s next trip through.

I recorded the Union Pool set with Doug Graham’s soundboard feed and Schoeps MK5 microphones; Eric recorded the Brooklyn Bowl show with his MBHO hypercardiods. Both recordings sound great. Enjoy!
