Viet Cong: January 28, 2015 Union Pool – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

Sometimes there’s something to the wisdom of crowds. Viet Cong, from Canada’s less-celebrated center (Calgary, to be exact) sold out this Union Pool show long before the not-at-all-catastrophic snowstorm hit New York City this week. Still, it takes something special to pack in almost any room on a slushy, freezing night in January, and Viet Cong had the place well past capacity. Half-composed of former members of the band Women, who we were lucky enough to see in their prime, Viet Cong continues that band’s art-rock mission, if not expands it. What makes the band’s live show flat-out better than their very-well-regarded debut LP is simply that watching them put this music together gives you a clearer sense of how much is going on. The interplay between guitarists isn’t simply your usual rhythm/lead dichotomy; guitarists Scott Munro and Daniel Christiansen’s instruments are almost in opposition to each other at points, at others answering each other note-for-note. Both guitarists double up on keys as well, but don’t think vocalist/bassist Matt Flegel isn’t producing himself. Granted, some of the members have history together, but this is still an incredibly tight unit for a band with only the Cassette EP and the new album to their credit.

The band’s sound mimics the bleak landscape of their hometown at times; the show, and the album closed with a ten-plus minute dirge named “Death”.  But there’s also humor running through Flegel’s lyrics, when you can make them out, and the Cassette songs, especially, have a more straightforward appeal. Ultimately, though, what comes across most about this band is just how effing good they are. The complexity of their work may suggest that this is music for musicians, but what Viet Cong do so well is make that complex music relatable, even fun, to listen to. This show will set a high bar for the rest of 2015, in the best possible way.

I recorded this set at the soundboard with Schoeps MK4V microphones and a stereo feed from Union Pool engineer Doug. The sound quality is outstanding. Enjoy!

Rhyton: December 10, 2014 Union Pool – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

January 22, 2015

IMG_8163

The other times we’ve seen Rhyton, the sets have tended toward new or unreleased material. That made this outing at Union Pool all the more of a treat, as we were introduced to three selections of brand-new material from their third record, Kykeon. The show kicked off with the Mediterranean flavor of “Topkapi” which featured frontman/guitarist Dave Shuford rocking the bouzouki, a Greek folk instrument that Shuford demonstrated his mastery of on his album Arghiledes. Kykeon means “to mix” in Greek, we’re told on Thrill Jockey‘s page, and that’s exactly what these songs felt like, as we got to hear “Siren in Byblos” and the “disco mix” of “Pannychis”, which built on some of “Topkapi’s” themes but expanded to surf and even vaguely pop (by Rhyton’s standards) motifs. Judging one piece of the Rhyton work against another is difficult, as the crew’s material is so varied, but this set represented some of the band’s most accessible work to date, and arguably some of their very best.

You can catch Rhyton tomorrow night at Trans-Pecos at 8 p.m. Be there.

I recorded this set in our usual manner for the venue, with Schoeps MK4V microphones and a soundboard feed by the house engineer, Robb. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

We like to think we have a special relationship to Lee Ranaldo’s solo career here at NYCTaper. We recorded the first few of his local solo shows back in 2011, and have been there for many more NYC-area gigs moving forward. We have captured live versions of pretty much all of his two excellent solo albums, some really neat covers, and an occasional look back at his Sonic Youth material. But through it all, the quality has been consistent — Lee is a pro with a fertile musical imagination, a penchant for picking superb collaborators, and unique guitar skills. At this Union Pool show a few weeks back, we were fortunate to catch all of this and more. Lee worked through most of the latest album Last Night on Earth (Matador Records) of which we streaming show-stopper “Ambulancer”, and from his eclectic bag of covers, Lee played a faithful cover of proto post-punk legends Wire, this one from their debut album Pink Flag. “Mannequin” is streaming below.

This set was recorded in our usual manner in this venue, this time with the AKG’s attached to the balcony rail and mixed with an excellent board feed. The sound quality is superb. Enjoy!

Ryan Sawyer and Darius Jones: April 16, 2014 Union Pool – FLAC/MP3/Streaming Full Set

We are very honored and excited to present our second experimental jazz recording for the site, the duo of Ryan Sawyer and Darius Jones opening for William Tyler at Union Pool. To quote my friend John Cook, a man much better educated on the scene than me, “both [Jones and Sawyer] are relentlessly experimental and quite diverse, leaving almost no stylistic or contextual stone unturned.” Indeed, these two have a recorded output and music history as diverse as the very bill they found themselves on this night.

Sawyer has played drums and otherwise collaborated across a range of genres, for artists as diverse as Boredoms, TV On the Radio, Rhys Chatham, Kid Millions, Gang Gang Dance, and Mekons, with current projects including Lonewolf & Cub and Oso Blanco, where he’s joined by local experimentalists C. Spencer Yeh, Colin Stetson and Nate Wooley).

Alto saxophonist Jones is an accomplished improviser who has joined projects ranging from the traditional to the wildly experimental. He participates in Gerald Cleaver’s Black Host, which released a record on Northern Spy in 2013, and found Jones veering ever-so-slightly toward a rock vibe. He has also released a series of three albums on the Aum Fidelity label that explore many sides of the jazz spectrum. As a player of the alto sax, Jones is able to wreak an almost unparalleled intensity from the instrument, as was in evidence at this short-but-powerful all-improvisational performance.

Jones and Sawyer collaborate periodically in addition to their other projects, making this set a welcome surprise. Clearly more than a few fans were in the know, as the club filled up the second the doors opened for this performance. What you will hear on this recording are three separate untitled improvisations that provide a good introduction to both players’ style. Though the pieces are abstract, Jones and Sawyer manage to establish a natural sense of flow and drive to them, suggesting that this is a pairing worth further repetition. We hope to continue featuring more performances of this kind in the future.

This set was recorded with an excellent stereo soundboard feed by Robert, the Union Pool engineer, together with Schoeps MK41 microphones. The sound quality is outstanding. Enjoy!

William Tyler: April 16, 2014 Union Pool – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

William Tyler has been pounding the pavement for the better part of a year now, touring relentlessly on his acclaimed Merge Records release Impossible Truth. No surprise, then, that the road has made his stories richer, his playing sharper than ever before. At this point, folks could be forgiven for forgetting Tyler is also a member of Lambchop; these days he’s more visible for his own work, as he ought to be after two song cycles — Impossible Truth and 2010’s Behold the Spirit — that reached the pinnacle of the solo guitar genre.

This night at Union Pool celebrated the end of Tyler’s long journey with new material and old, as well as some killer stories from the road. Of note in particular were the brand-new “Highway Anxiety”, which to our knowledge is not yet planned for release, as well as at least one of the songs that will appear on Tyler’s forthcoming Merge EP Lost Colony, which drops April 29 and can be pre-ordered at the link below. Unlike prior Tyler releases, this one will feature a full band. “We Can’t Go Home Again”, played on this night, is one of the songs you can expect to see on that album.

Tyler’s an ideal performer for an intimate spot like Union Pool, and the crowd’s attention was rewarded with fine-grained renditions of some of his best. We’re happy to see the man step off the road for a while, since he deserves a rest, but this was a stellar way to close out this latest chapter of a fine and promising solo career.

I recorded this set with a soundboard feed from the Union Pool engineer Robert, along with Schoeps MK41 microphones to provide the most direct sound. The first track, “Highway Anxiety”, does not include the soundboard feed, but the sound on all tracks is equally excellent. Enjoy!

Cian Nugent: February 19, 2014 Union Pool – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

I first saw Cian Nugent live last September at Hopscotch Music Festival, where we had the pleasure of seeing multiple sides of him both as a solo artist and with his “supergroup” Desert Heat. To date, the Irish guitarist hasn’t played regularly in the U.S., so there was no way I was going to miss him supporting fantastic new album at Union Pool. Here, the faithful were rewarded with Nugent working through solo versions of several standout tracks from his latest, Born With The Caul, as well as material from the seven inch release “Hire Purchase”, the only electric number of the night. The Wednesday night crowd rewarded Cian’s focus and concentration with an ample amount of their own, turning this sometimes-raucous room into a reverent space. With any luck, the reception from this tour will bring Nugent back to New York more frequently. This great artist’s catalog has much more ground to cover, as Pitchfork so presciently observed in a Marc Masters/Grayson Currin “Out Door” post recently.

I recorded this set with a soundboard feed provided by Union Pool’s head engineer Ian MacCarthy, together with Schoeps MK41 microphones to provide mild room ambiance. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Caged Animals: December 11, 2013 Union Pool – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

We have followed Vincent Cacchione, the frontman and principal songwriter behind Caged Animals, for a few years now, beginning with his more straight-ahead rock n’ roll project, Soft Black. While Caged Animals is a different beast than that band we first saw back in the summer of 2010, what hasn’t changed are Cacchione’s songwriting instincts. The man can write hooks as well as anybody in Brooklyn, and his flair for that, coupled with his knack for inventive arrangements, makes any of his music something we want to see.

This show at Union Pool celebrated the release of the band’s second full-length LP, In the Land of Giants, a concept album that strikes an uplifting note compared to Cacchione’s Soft Black material. As he puts it on the leadoff track, “Too Much Dark”, there’s too much dark, and not enough light, but on this record, Cacchione helps lead us to it. The band played the album straight through in front of a tight-knit group of family, friends and longtime friends, and it showed in their relaxed, confident presence. My personal highlight was “Cindy + Me”, an uptempo number built around a sample from composer, pianist and technologist Raymond Scott. The song offered an emotional high point for a year rapidly drawing to a close and, it being a Cacchione joint, it was catchy as hell. The band will be in Europe and the UK this month and next — tour dates here. If you make it, you’ll be sure to leave with a smile on your face.

I recorded this set with a soundboard feed from Union Pool engineer Robert, plus Schoeps MK4V microphones providing ambiance. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Guitar prodigy and all-around nice guy Daniel Bachman closes out my posts for 2013, as he deserves to. This prolific young artist, who we first experienced at Hopscotch earlier this year, has been cranking out stunning solo guitar records at a breakneck pace, with the understated genius of Jesus, I’m A Sinner hitting shelves via Tompkins Square this year and another LP forthcoming on Asheville, NC imprint Bathetic Records in early-mid-2014. Based on some of his recent live sets, there seems to be yet more material at the ready for after that. This set previewed a bunch of the forthcoming record, and even gave Bachman a chance to do an extra-long set due to the disappearance of the night’s headliner. We were more than OK with that, as Daniel busted out some long songs to stretch it out, including “Copperhead” and his just-for-this-night mashup of “Blenheim” and “We Would Be Building”, which is streaming below. Daniel deserves your love and your ears, and we hope you dig it.

I recorded this set with a soundboard feed and Schoeps MK4V cardiod microphones. Other than some occasional HVAC noise in the audience mics, the sound quality is outstanding. Enjoy!

Zachary Cale: September 27, 2013 Union Pool – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

Zachary Cale is a classic songwriter in every sense of the word, who balances his aptitude with his six-string with keenly-observed lyrics and an obvious respect for his audience. This show at Union Pool represented the release show for Cale’s fourth proper LP, Blue Rider. The album is commendable both for its brevity and consistency; across its eight songs, there is not a weak one among them. Of its standout tracks, Cale played them all at this show, particularly “Hold Fast”, whose whimsical guitars and breezy vocal will find favor with Kurt Vile fans, among others. Cale is one of those artists who doesn’t seem to really need the studio; this live performance felt completely of a piece with the album in sound and structure, with the songs gaining energy from the Friday night crowd. Along with playing the bulk of Blue Rider, Cale gave us a special treat with a gorgeous cover of Robert Johnson’s “Love In Vain”.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK4V microphones from our usual spot in the venue, plus a limited soundboard feed consisting primarily of vocals and keyboards. At points, the keyboards are a touch loud in the mix, and there is a level of crowd noise not surprising for a Friday night crowd. Nonetheless, the overall sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Cale is on tour for October and November in a mix of headlining appearances and shows with Crystal Stilts. His next New York appearance will be with Crystal Stilts at Bowery Ballroom on Halloween. Tickets for that show are available here.

Little is known to date about the Brooklyn band Zoned Out, though they have quietly been building a following around town. Featuring current and former members of La Otracina, Grateful Dead cover band Dead Tape, Titan, Polygamist and Mirror Queen, they serve up deep multi-part psych meditations grounded in the rock aesthetic. For this Union Pool show, the band played under the swirling light show of Planetary Projections, adding to the otherworldly vibe of the night. Expect to see a new album from these guys, as well as more Brooklyn dates, soon.
