Ignatz: May 24, 2015 Union Pool – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

Ignatz

Ignatz—named after Krazy Kat’s comic strip nemesis—is the solo folk guitar project of Belgium’s Bram Devens. Acoustic guitars and vocals are cloaked in distortion by an array of effects pedals, recalling the lo-fi sounds of AM radio. More than once during Ignatz’s set, I recalled the quieter moments in the Hush Arbors catalog—both share an affection for distorted acoustic guitars and the higher registers of the voice. Half of his Union Pool set is comprised of newer, as-yet-untitled songs, while “Drinking Tea and Bloody Maries,” “Japan is Romantic,” and “I Need a Good Night’s Sleep” are off Ignatz’s first record with De Stervende Honden (The Dying Dogs), Teenage Boys, released last year on Ultra Eczema. While the album features the full band, here Ignatz is accompanied only by his guitar and the result is an outstanding, delicate reimagining of American folk through through the lens of a Belgian guitarist.

I recorded this set with the AKGs clamped to the balcony and a board feed from Union Pool FOH, Kevin. There’s a little bit of ambient noise from the bar here, but the guitar and vocals are loud and clear. Enjoy!

Thanks to Jeff for organizing the event and inviting us down to record it. Avant Ghetto will presenting another show full of guitar worship at Union Pool on August 2 with PG Six, Chuck Johnson, Alan Licht, and Anthony Pasquarosa.

Woods Rough Trade (2)

To continue the theme from the Beach Fossils post on Monday, we saw Woods this past weekend at Rough Trade for the first time since our final night at Death By Audio in November. We’ve seen Woods many times over the years, including several other venues that no longer exist (Monster Island Basement, 285 Kent, The 1896) and one that been closed for a few years but will have a grand opening by the end of the year (Market Hotel). But things are going very well for Woods these days, and its really still all about the continued evolution of band who are now a tight, well-oiled machine. This show contained a similar setlist from the DBA show, but with the added bonus of a couple of encores that featured some classic Woods cuts that we haven’t heard lately.

In the next few days we’ll have a really special announcement about Woods’ next NYC show. Stay tuned.

I recorded this set with the Schoeps cards mounted inside of the soundboard cage and mixed with an excellent feed provided by house FOH Kyle. Kyle did a really nice stereo pan and the result is that the recording has superb separation and overall quality. Enjoy!

Mac McCaughan has pretty much done it all in the world of music. He’s the co-owner of Merge Records, one of the foremost independent labels operating today. He’s fronts Superchunk, one of indie rock’s most beloved and prolific bands of the last twenty-five years. But Mac has never released a solo record in his own name. His side project Portastatic has released a handful of albums over the years, but the 2015’s Non-Believers is a Mac McCaughan record. Back in April, we posted Mac’s solo show from the Bull City Record Store Day concert that featured a couple of songs from the new album. And in a nice bookend, in May at Baby’s All Right we captured this show which featured a full band (openers Flesh Wounds as Mac’s backing band) performing four Non-Believers tracks among Superchuck classics, selected Portastatic tracks and two neat covers. Mid-set Mac played a mini solo show before the band returned to close out the night ripping through some classics and three well-deserved encores.

Mac will be playing a few select dates during the Summer before we catch him again at Hopscotch Fest in September. Yesterday, Mac announced some new dates for the West Coast in September after Hopscotch, all dates here.

This set was recorded by Baby’s FOH Harrison. We mixed Harrison’s excellent board mix with the room mics and the result is a superb recording. Enjoy!

We last saw Beach Fossils at what would be our last show at Glasslands, a venue with which we had a long and cherished history before it closed on New Year’s Eve 2014. Prior to that, we saw the band play one of the late-era shows at 285 Kent, another now-shuttered venue with which we also shared much history. So at this point, we would much rather experience this excellent band at a show celebrating something new and on Friday we got the chance. Bayonet Records is the new label founded by Beach Fossils’ protagonist Dustin Payseur and former Captured Tracks General Manager Katie Garcia and their debut Northside Festival showcase was a fine display of just how well we expect this label to succeed. It was a four-band bill (more recordings coming later) that was anchored by this Beach Fossils set. The entire show had a celebratory affair and by the time the Fossils took the stage, the venue was in full-on party mode. Upfront, the fans were crashing and bouncing throughout the set, which featured a fine run-though the band’s catalog, and one new song. A new album is expected in 2016. Unfortunately, at one point the middle of crowd got a bit too boisterous and literally a fight broke out. But Dustin was having none of it, as his stopped the band, pointed out the brawlers and made them hug before finishing the set. The show’s finale was a blistering version of “Daydream” and we are streaming that below.

I recorded this set with the Schoeps cards mounted inside of the soundboard booth and mixed with a fine feed from house FOH Kam. The overall sound quality is quite excellent. Enjoy!

Luna: June 11, 2015 McCarren Park (Northside Fest) – Flac/MP3/Streaming

June 17, 2015
By

luna-19

Luna’s first show in New York in 10 years was one of those damned-near perfect evenings that pretty much represents why we do what we do here at NYCTaper. On a beautiful night, one of the great New York bands in recent memory played a superb show before a huge crowd for the opening night of the Northside Festival. Dean Wareham and Britta Phillips are married, perform often together, and live in LA where they are friendly with drummer Lee Wall, and the couple have also played with guitarist Sean Eden on a few occasions, including a show we recorded in 2012. So, the Luna reunion was by no means a surprising event, but it was so sweet in its fruition.

The first reunion show this year was a night in LA in April, and then the band played sixteen dates in Spain and Portugal (Dean’s tour diary is a great read). When they returned to the US for this one-off Brooklyn show the band was in sync, relaxed and poised to deliver. From the opening “Slide”, the first song on the first album, through personal favorite “California” (streaming below) and continuing with a career-spanning setlist the show never really let up with the positive energy. The between-song banter also indicated that the band was both having fun playing and having fun being together. Several times the band acknowledged specific uber-fans, people wearing vintage Luna t-shirts, and various landmarks on the NYC skyline. Dean has remarked that Sean Eden has never played better guitar and on this night Sean seemed to be having the time of his life. The show was also special because the night was Britta Phillips birthday and the band acknowledged that fact early in the set. The main set concluded with an incendiary eight-minute long “23 Minutes in Brussels” (which we are also streaming below), before the band returned for two well-deserved encores including their cover of Beat Happening’s “Indian Summer”.

Luna returns to NYC for three sold-out shows at the Bowery Ballroom (October 7 and 8) and Music Hall of Williamsburg (October 9). All dates here.

I recorded this set with the Schoeps cards mounted in front of the soundboard cage and mixed with an excellent feed. The wind was not too bad but can be heard a few times, but fortunately the board cage was moved closer to the stage this year so that the audience feed is quite good. This mix favors the audience feed by about 60/40, giving it a nice “you are there” feel with the board used as a supplement to fortify the overall sound. The result is a superb recording that we feel fairly represents this great night. Enjoy!

Daniel Bachman: May 24, 2015 Union Pool – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

June 16, 2015
By

Daniel Bachman

So far, 2015 has been a banner year for solo guitar records, with new releases from Daniel Bachman and Tashi Dorji plus the upcoming new Chuck Johnson record—just to name a few that I’m excited about. With the recently-released River, Daniel Bachman has somehow managed to out-do last year’s incredible Orange Co. SerenadeIt’s no accident the North Carolina transplant has released those two records on a couple of the state’s most prestigious labels—River on Three Lobed and Orange Co. Serenade on Bathetic. (And indeed no accident that Chuck Johnson’s Crows in the Basilica came out on Three Lobed and Tashi Dorji’s Appa came out on Bathetic, to further the connection to like-minded guitarists and labels.)

Bachman headlined an incredible bill of solo folk guitarists at Union Pool a few weeks back—the show, organized by Jeff Conklin/Avant Ghetto, also featured North Carolina songstress Sarah Louise, L.A.’s Itasca (Kayla Cohen), and Belgium’s Ignatz (Bram Devens). Bachman’s set treats us to songs off both River and Orange Co. Serenade, including two covers: “Levee” by Jack Rose and “Old Country Rock” by William Moore, giving us a good idea of who he sees as his forebears. Bachman may be young among the crowd of solo guitarists, but already can be counted among the genre’s greats. I have no doubt we’ll be seeing more great things from him.

I recorded this set with the AKGs clamped to the balcony and a board feed from Union Pool FOH, Kevin. There’s a little bit of ambient noise from the crowd and bar here—including one very exuberant fan—but Bachman’s guitar is loud and crystal clear. Enjoy!

Thanks to Jeff for organizing the event and inviting us down to record it. Avant Ghetto will presenting another show full of guitar worship at Union Pool on August 2 with PG Six, Chuck Johnson, Alan Licht, and Anthony Pasquarosa.

Dommengang: June 6, 2015 Union Pool – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

June 10, 2015
By

Dommengang

Dommengang is the latest addition to Thrill Jockey’s roster of some of the finest hard psych bands out there, including Eternal Tapestry, Pontiak, White Hills, Rhyton, and Arbouretum—just to name a few. Celebrating the release of their new record, Everybody’s Boogie, Dommengang stopped by Union Pool this past weekend for a one-off gig to air tracks off that record. Despite frontman Sig Wilson’s insistence that the band hasn’t played together in a year, it doesn’t show as the band immediately syncs into a lockstep groove that doesn’t waver during their thirty-plus-minute set. Underpinning Wilson’s guitar riffage are bassist Brian Markham and drummer Adam Bulgasem. The three are clearly comfortable playing together and after seeing their live set I get the impression that Everybody’s Boogie is one of those albums born of extensive jamming that’s then honed into an album. Favorites here include the chugging “CC,” “Her Blues” (for which the band made a video), and the twangy “Hats Off to Magic.” So far no more live dates have been announced but east and west coast dates are promised in support of Everybody’s Boogie.

I recorded this set with the AKGs clamped to the balcony. Though I got a board feed from Union Pool FOH Kevin, I set the levels a little high and ended up with some distortion so this recording only uses the room mics. However, Kevin’s expertise behind the board and Union Pool’s excellent sound system make for a terrific recording that captures all of Dommegang’s heaviness. I’m sure you’ll enjoy it!

Vulture Shit: April 28, 2015 Baby’s All Right – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

Vulture Shit

“We’re Vulture Shit. That’s the worst kind of shit.” —Randy Vandal, Vulture Shit

Vulture Shit are a non-traditional post-hardcore trio traveling under what I’m pretty convinced are assumed names: Randy Vandal (vocals), Mike D. (drums), and Mike B. (bass). If you were in a band called Vulture Shit, you’d disguise your true identity too. But these guys are no superheroes—according to their lyrics they are all too normal. Disgustingly, creepily normal. Feel free to connect with them on LinkedIn (surely the height of social networking banality), though your odds of landing that new gig will probably diminish due to the association. But enough about the players—what about the music? The lack of guitar is the obvious insight, but it’s not missed at all. Mike B.’s expert bass-playing is absolutely singular and I don’t think I’ve ever seen or heard anything like it. Combined with Mike D.’s powerhouse drumming, this is all Vulture Shit needs in terms of instrumentation. Randy Vandal vocalizes like a younger Matt Korvette (Pissed Jeans) or a way younger David Yow (you know). Laying down a whopping twelve songs in twenty-three minutes, this trio wowed a crowd—myself included—that had shown up early to catch Pile (their set here).

Baby’s FOH Harrison Fore recorded this set with a board feed and the Baby’s room mics. I mixed those two sources in post-production. Like the Pile set from the same night, the sound is exceptional even for Baby’s standards. Enjoy!

You can take my word—and this recording—for it, but seeing is believing: catch Vulture Shit next Friday June 12 on a stellar Northside Fest showcase at Aviv, along with NYCTaper favs Washer. Tickets are on sale.

Pile: April 28, 2015 Baby’s All Right – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

Pile

Don’t be surprised when Pile’s latest long-player, You’re Better Than This, is all over 2015’s year-end lists. It’s the most immediately engaging record I’ve heard all year, and another winner from the folks at Exploding in Sound Records. Pile has been supporting the record with a never-ending tour, putting Rick Maguire high up on the list of hardest working musicians in the game. This Baby’s All Right show from April is their second stop in NYC this year, having previously played the grittier Palisades in February. Meanwhile, NYCTaper caught up with the band down in Austin for a short SXSW showcase set back in March (that recording here).

You’re Better Than This has put Pile on many people’s radars, but it was clear from the crowd that some people have been with Pile all along. Early adopters could be identified as the ones mouthing the words to even older songs like “Pets” from the 2010 self-released album, Magic Isn’t Real, as well as “The Browns” and “Grunt Like a Pig” from the 2012 EIS debut Dripping. Though I’m a bit newer to the band, I count myself lucky to have caught them at Baby’s—these guys won’t be playing 280-capacity rooms for long.

Baby’s FOH Harrison Fore recorded this set with a board feed and the Baby’s room mics. I mixed those two sources in post-production. The sound quality of this recording is above and beyond even Baby’s usual high standards for sound. Enjoy!

Pile will be back around playing The Bell House on July 3. Tickets are still available.

Föllakzoid: May 23, 2015 Rough Trade – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

May 27, 2015
By

IMG_1424-2

The Chilean band Föllakzoid have a habit of latching you into their deep grooves and not letting up, each song building like a little universe around monotones to create pieces that fall squarely in the post-Krautrock camp. The artist Uwe Schmidt, better known as Atom TM, joined the band for their brand new record, III, and the electronic influence was evident at this show, as the band created trancelike numbers that lent themselves as much to dancing as to chilling out. There are hints of U.S.-based compatriots like Moon Duo here, but this music comes across are more beat-focused and less “rock.”

This show at Rough Trade marked a relatively rare return by the band to the U.S., and that was emphasized by the long line to get in the door. Some were no doubt there early to see Jim Jarmusch and Jozef van Wissem’s Squrl take the stage first, but the crowd only filled in further by the time Föllakzoid took the stage. From single, flickering beats, “Electric” grew into the roiling kickoff track from III that we’ve all come to love, followed by that album’s centerpiece, “Piure.” By the time those two songs ended, the show was already thirty-two minutes in. Those hoping for standard “psychedelic” fare might have wondered what they had walked into at that point; fortunately, the people here got it, and started dancing. From there, they turned back to their excellent previous effort, II, for the last four songs — “99,” “9,” “Trees,” and “Rivers.” The set’s intensity peaked at “Trees,” which felt like the biggest rock number of the bunch, making “Rivers” and its slightly more subdued pace the right way to go out. We hope these guys will be back soon.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK4V cardiod microphones and a soundboard feed from Rough Trade engineer Kameron Biehl. The sound quality is outstanding. Enjoy!
