Alan Licht: January 6, 2016 Union Pool

For my first recording of 2016, I got to witness the album debut of a New York music veteran, among a room of like-minded souls. We saw Alan Licht live debut many of the tracks that would make up his latest release, Currents, back in August, but he arrived at Union Pool this time with copies of the finished product in hand, and the ideas on it more tightly wound. Relative to some of his peers, Licht’s songs feel like they ride less on fingerpicking prowess (though that’s considerable) than on the strength of his melodies, which give the thrilling jolt of a good rock song even without the lyrics or band that typically accompanies such things. Like the previous show, this one began with the immediate appeal of “Riding On the S’s” followed by “First Lover, Haleema” from Currents, as well as serving up at least one track that didn’t make the record simply because it wouldn’t squeeze onto a side of vinyl. January shows are always a joy for the true music fan, as the cold weather tends to draw only those who really care, and that was evident in the pin-drop quiet room during these engaging, minimalist tunes. From the delicate “Uncertainty” to the melancholy and final “Seventh Song,” Licht showed off the strength of this latest cycle of creativity. Make a date for his next NYC visit, or wherever you might be able to see him.

Cass McCombs: January 7, 2016 Bowery Ballroom

The timing was excellent. My first show of the new year took place at the legendary Bowery Ballroom and featured one of my favorite artists. And did Cass McCombs ever deliver. We’ve seen Cass perform intense shows, fun shows, and even split shows with the Meat Puppets. But what Cass and his band did on Thursday night was one for the ages — an over two-hour epic night that featured a nice cross-section of material from his healthy catalog. Ostensibly Cass is on tour in support of his new album A Folk Set Apart: Rarities, B-Sides & Space Junk, Etc., which as its title makes clear, is a compilation. But the band only played a couple of songs from the new album, instead treating us to some inspired versions of older Cass material. Of note were the last two songs played — a huge thirteen-minute version of “County Line” and the finale, a fourteen minute take on “Dreams Come True Girl”, which also included a dual drum solo. The band this time out included the addition of two drummers (Jesse Lee and Ryan Sawyer) to replace Joe Russo (currently on tour with JRAD), and Cass regulars Dan Iead on guitar and Jon Shaw on bass. With several years together, the unit was both tight when necessary and also capable of letting loose for extended segments (see above) which ultimately provided us with a lengthy show that literally never lagged and was chock full of highlights.

I recorded this set from our usual location in this venue and the sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Alex Bleeker & the Freaks “Play Dead”: December 30, 2015 Rough Trade NYC

If you were a fan of the Grateful Dead, and you saw the actual band live, then you’ve probably got more than your share of opinions about the various combinations of the remaining parts of it who’ve tried to transact on the original’s greatness. As someone who never saw the actual band (but has seen some successful and less-than-successful related projects), I’m not here to convince you. But for my money, there’s something rewarding, something essential, about watching much-younger musicians, with full careers filled with their own original material in front of them, paying tribute to one of rock music’s foundational bands.

I  loved the Brooklyn Bowl show that we posted by Alex Bleeker and The Freaks — that one a combo run through their new album and some other originals, followed by a “Play Dead” set that’s become a staple of many of their live shows. This one flipped that script, with Bleeker and pals offering up a 100-minute set consisting almost entirely of Dead covers. This — my final show of the year — was billed as the afterparty to Phish’s 12/30 Madison Square Garden show, and the celebratory air from that event (an especially strong performance from this year’s MSG run) carried over into the more intimate confines of Rough Trade NYC.

Overall, this “Play Dead” was a looser, better and arguably truer performance to the spirit of the original band. While the Brooklyn Bowl set consisted mainly of discrete run-throughs of each song, you’ll notice that this set was filled with segues, kicking off with “China Cat Sunflower” into a surging “I Know You Rider” before venturing into  cosmic territory with “Eyes to the World” into “He’s Gone” into “The Other One,” taking a short detour through “Dark Star” and ending up, improbably, with a Bleeker original, “Sealong Hair,” from their latest record, Country Agenda. After that came three more non-Dead tunes (two more originals, plus their regular-rotation cover of Mountain Man’s “Animal Tracks,” a fierce jam in its own right. Where Bleeker was joined last time by Real Estate’s Martin Courtney, here we had another cameo by one of his Ridgewood, NJ pals, Julian Lynch and multi-talented Dave Harrington (of many bands, but perhaps best-known for his work in Darkside). The band managed to deliver a little birthday salutation to Harringon in between “Tennessee Jed” and “St. Stephen,” which closed the set. By that point it was 2 a.m. and the club’s neighbors weren’t going to tolerate any more. For those of us inside, though, this was an afterparty that we’d have been happy to continue all night.

I recorded this set with a soundboard feed from Rough Trade engineer Leah, together with Schoeps MK4V microphones. The sound quality is outstanding. Enjoy!

Holly Miranda: December 18, 2015 Bowery Ballroom

We’ve followed Holly Miranda for more than the last half decade, and she’s never let us down. Whether it was at the legendary Maxwells, headlining gig at Bowery, a private show at a wine bar, a night at Glasslands, or a show among friends at Zebulon, Holly Miranda has consistently delivered outstanding performances. Her latest record is a self-titled album that was recorded a couple of years ago after Holly moved to LA and parted ways with XL Recordings. As we noted in 2013, the new album and the artist would find a new home quickly and sure enough Dangerbird Records did just that. Last month at Bowery Ballroom, Holly brought together some old friends (including friend of the site Tim Mislock) and played a too brief support set which included much of the new album, a couple of older tracks and one sublime cover. As always, ultimately the set left us satisfied but wanting more. So, tomorrow night Holly Miranda will join forces with the excellent Hypnocraft and play a show at Manhattan Inn. Don’t miss it.

Herbcraft: December 12, 2015 Trans-Pecos

Like the Northeast’s answer to Eternal Tapestry, Herbcraft trade in spaced-out, far-flung psych pastorals. Ever since we caught the Portland, Maine band nearly two years ago at Mercury Lounge, we’ve been itching for the opportunity to get them back to NYC. So when we booked Chris Forsyth & The Solar Motel Band to headline Trans-Pecos (that set here), Herbcraft were high up on our wish list of openers. In forty mind-expanding minutes, Herbcraft took the room on a wild journey. Their set begins with a long improvised jam that segues seamlessly into “A Knock at the Door” from The Astral Body Electric and then into “Bread Don’t Rise” from last year’s Wot Oz. The tunes are rhizomatic head trips—pulsating, looping, and expanding without origin or destination. There is no other option but to kick back, tune in, and give in to the mighty Herbcraft…

I recorded this set with the mics set up at the stage lip, combined with a board feed from Trans-Pecos FOH, Ned. The results are outstanding. Enjoy!

Zachary Cale: October 15, 2015 NYCTaper Unofficial CMJ Show, Cake Shop

Zachary Cale is a slow-burn kind of musician. That’s true both of his songs, which tend to unfold at a middle tempo that neither rushes nor inhibits his point, and his musical career, which continues to grow bit by bit, solid album by solid album. Cale is one of those artists you tend to hear about from other fans and musicians, not so much from the PR-driven and mostly corporatized music “press.” Perhaps that’s a fault of his modest approach, but with this year’s Duskland, possibly even more so than 2014’s Blue Rider (released in December 2013), even those outlets have been forced take notice.

Though most of this year’s CMJ New Music Marathon (wisely named, since it bears little resemblance to music events people actually attend for fun) was run by the usual suspects — big name PR and talent agencies, particularly — we were excited that Cale asked to join our annual show at Cake Shop, an unofficial daytime event that, as tends to be the case with day shows, tries to put some of the fun back into the “marathon.” This five-song set doesn’t do justice to the breadth of Cale’s oeuvre, but “Blue Moth,” “Sundowner” and “Evensong” make the case for Duskland as well as any three of its songs could. Possibly as a nod to those who’ve seen him several times before, like we have, Cale offered up a rare nugget to close the set: the b-side “Holes In Everything,” an uptempo country-western affair that punctuated, as well as anything could, that this day show was about fun.

I recorded this set in the same manner as the other CMJ sets, with Schoeps MK4V microphones at the stage lip and a soundboard feed from the day’s engineer Jeff. The sound quality is outstanding. Enjoy!

Chris Forsyth & The Solar Motel Band: December 12, 2015 Trans-Pecos

Over the past couple years—and 2015 especially—this site has developed quite a rapport with Chris Forsyth & The Solar Motel Band, resulting in six separate recordings in 2015 alone, plus a pair from 2013 and 2014. So it was only fitting that we booked this year-end engagement at one of the few clubs Forsyth & co. had yet to play: Trans-Pecos.  I’m happy to report that the show was a raging success and that all were rewarded with what is truly the standout set of the year. Having recently announced the second proper album with The Solar Motel Band on No Quarter, The Rarity of Experience (preorder it here!), the band graced us with not only a pair of newer tracks we hadn’t heard before (the impeccably titled “The First Ten Minutes of Cocksucker Blues,” and “Boston Street Lullaby”), but played some older ones we hadn’t heard in a while either. The set’s centerpiece is a sprawling three-parter, consisting of the older “Paranoid Cat” into a transitional jam that takes us into “Solar Motel Part II.” A twenty-five minute epic that left the room spinning. Easing us out of 2015 with the quiet closer “Boston Street Lullaby,” we look forward to what 2016 has in store for Chris Forsyth. And no doubt, we’ll be there to capture more exciting shows to come.

NE-HI: October 15, 2015 NYCTaper Unofficial CMJ Show, Cake Shop

Chicago’s NE-HI have only been around since 2014, but they’ve already made a name for themselves in the local scene with their sharp hooks and the immediacy of their live performance. All of that was on display back in October at our unofficial CMJ day show at Cake Shop, in which the band kicked things off with their earworm single “Drag” and kept the momentum up throughout. These guys are fellow travelers with beloved Chicagoans Twin Peaks (our recording of them here) and it’s easy to see the kinship between sounds. They, like Twin Peaks, are vets of Chicago’s DIY scene, but their album production is straight-up professional, befitting the quality of their sound. Having now been signed to a major tour promoter, I’d say it’s likely we’ll be seeing NE-HI on many more bills come festival time. If they pass through NYC before then, make sure not to miss them.

Natural Causes: September 11, 2015 Hopscotch Music Festival (Raleigh, NC)

A year ago, local North Carolina garage rockers Last Year’s Men played the first night of Hopscotch Music Festival, having quietly dropped their long awaited second album, “Underwhelmed”, via Bandcamp earlier in the week. The album did not live up to it’s title and built on the hooks and wiser- than-their years lyrics of their earlier records, but there were signs that the band may be on its way out. For one thing, guitarist Geoff Schilling had joined Flesh Wounds as their bassist, and drummer Ian Rose and guitarist Ben Carr had joined up with Charlotte rockers Paint Fumes. However, the Last Year’s Men members weren’t done playing together either, and a jam session experiment turned into a brand new band with Rose switching to synths and vocals, Schilling taking over drums, and Carr remaining on guitar and vocals. The new trio was dubbed Natural Causes and they quickly began playing shows and honing their new, more urgent sound built on a combination of post/synth/garage punk sounds. The new tunes featured guitar work that slashes and crawls over top of woozy, unsettling keyboards, and lyrics that tackle classic punk themes of dread, anger, boredom, and anxiety with a healthy dose of humor.

Fast forward to this year’s Hopscotch and Natural Causes had already played a significant number of local shows, recorded and released a debut album on Snot Releases, written more songs, and hit the road for a two week east coast tour. Booked for an opening slot on Friday night at CAM, the band was a perfect pairing to kick off the night ahead of Nots, a gnarly synth driven punk band of kindred spirits from Memphis, TN. Natural Causes blasted their way through 4 songs off their debut 12″, plus five new songs destined for future releases, showing off their knack for tense sets, pushing and pulling tempos from song to song, all with a collective, wry grin. Including their day party sets on Friday and Saturday afternoons, Natural Causes played three sets in just over 24 hours, and generated a fair amount of positive press with each show. Look for much more to come in the year ahead.

The Friday night set at CAM was captured by area taper Rumbleset, with the same setup as the Moon Duo recording previously posted on this site: two sets of mics, Church Audio CA-11s on the ceiling and Shure SM-57s on stage, combined with a soundboard feed. The sound quality is outstanding.

Kevin Devine: December 11, 2015 Bell House (Devinyls Splits Show)

We always knew Kevin Devine was one of the nicest guys around — what I didn’t know was how ubiquitous is that opinion. Kevin’s current project is the Devinyls Splits, a six-volume series released in semi-monthly intervals by Bad Timing Records where Devine pairs with another performer on a double-sided 7″. The roster of artists who have joined in this project is both impressive and eclectic — from indie-vet Matthew Caws (Nada Surf) to new punk frontperson Meredith Graves (Perfect Pussy) to neo-folk hero Mike Kinsella (Owen). Kevin’s ability to attract such a variety of artists is admirable, but it was astounding that when he planned a tour for the series and invited all six of the artists — every single one of them agreed to play the three-show run. The opening night of the tour was Friday at Bell House and if the Kevin Devine three-album show from a few years ago (recording here) was a wealth of riches, this year’s event was even more fan-friendly. In the end, the show featured two lengthy sets that lasted over four hours, offered seven guests including mini-sets from Laura Stevenson, Tigers Jaw, Cymbals Eat Guitars, Owen, and Matthew Caws, many collaborations between the artists, some neat covers, and interspersed within it all, twenty-four Kevin Devine (either solo or with The Goddamn Band) performances. But somehow the night never seemed to lose any momentum despite many stage changes. Ultimately, it was Kevin at the center of it all, and as his fans intrinsically trust him, on this night he and his friends delivered in spades.

I recorded this set with the Schoeps cardioids clamped to the front rail of the soundboard and blended with a superbly mixed soundboard by Bell House FOH Dave. The sound quality is quite excellent. Enjoy!
