Soulive: March 12, 2013 Brooklyn Bowl (Bowlive IV, Night 4) – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

The look of pure joy on the face of Booker T. Jones on this night said everything that needs to be said about why a person becomes a musician.  As he sat at the organ, settling into the upbeat groove of “Hip Hug-Her” from the Booker T & the M.G.’s album of the same name, Jones beamed. And the Brooklyn Bowl crowd — most if not all of us much younger than his 68 years — smiled back.  Jones’ music has, in a sense, already outlived him, winning the hearts of generations who never saw his original band play, who only know the original Stax Records from the Internet and (if they’re lucky), the used LP bin.  That smile on Booker T’s face, as he played that organ in the exact way that only he can, was the smile of a man who knows he is immortal.

With their Bowlive series, now in its fourth year, Soulive have easily established themselves as the premier soul-jazz act in America right now, commanding large crowds over these seven nights in Brooklyn as well as top-shelf special guests. On this Tuesday night it was the inestimable Booker T, David Hidalgo of Los Lobos, and band semi-regulars the Shady Horns; appearances at some of the other shows included Warren Haynes, Derek Trucks, Lee Fields, Luther & Cody Dickinson (of North Mississippi Allstars), Nigel Hall, and more.  This set, just shy of two hours, was a bit shorter than some of the multi-set extravaganzas of the previous nights, but it made for a tight, nicely-sequenced run of tunes that never flagged and offered up one big number after another.  In addition to Booker T classics like “Hang ‘Em High” and “Born Under A Bad Sign”, the band dug into newer pop fare like Gnarls Barkley’s “Crazy” (also covered by Booker T on his 2011 solo effort The Road From Memphisand Lauryn Hill’s “Everything Is Everything”.  This show didn’t have the string of Beatles covers that the Bowlive we saw last year did, but tonight we did get “Something In the Way She Moves”.

Of course, no show featuring Booker T could be complete without his first classic, “Green Onions”, which closed out the main set.  Not content to leave things there, Soulive came back out one last time for a fitting finale of “Tuesday Night Squad”, which segued into a classic blues number (which I could use your help identifying).  With three nights to go, Soulive showed no sign of slowing down.  Bowlive may well be their own bid for immortality.

I recorded this set with a Schoeps MK5 cardiod microphone and a Schoeps MK8 figure-8 microphone in mid-side configuration onstage to capture the ideal width and upfront sound of the stage, plus a pair of Oktava MK-012 mics pointed at the left stack to give the recording a little flavor of the balance of the PA mix.  The results are outstanding, arguably better than last year’s Soulive recording.  Enjoy!

Hans Chew: February 15, 2013 Cameo Gallery – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

Hans Chew was kind enough to play a show for us for the second time in five months, taking the stage at Cameo Gallery as a bit of a sequel to his performance at Cake Shop during CMJ back in October.  As with that show, Hans delivered a barn burner of a set, this time in a venue with a loud, upgraded sound system that put extra oomph behind his boogie woogie blues-rock.  Along with new numbers like “Strange Love” and Junker’s Blues,” Chew delivered the finest version I’ve heard of one of his 2010 numbers, “Old Monteagle & Muscadine (Tennessee Part One)”, which leads off his Three Lobed Recordings debut Tennessee & Other Stories.  It is almost silly that an artist of Hans’ talent level was available to open a gig of this size — he has the style of sound, the chops and the showmanship to dominate far-larger stages.  We hope to see the Tennessee native’s next record in print some time this year, but until then, we hope this live set will tide you over. Enjoy!

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK5 microphones and an excellent soundboard feed by Cameo engineer Josh.  The sound is outstanding, easily surpassing the Cake Shop recording from last year.  Enjoy!

Chelsea Light Moving: March 2, 2013 Maxwell’s – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

Just before ripping into “Burroughs”, their first song, Thurston Moore opened this show by his new band Chelsea Light Moving with a quote from Mike Watt: “When you’re not playing, you’re paying.”

I had to remind myself at several points during this show that the exuberant, youthful guitarist and vocalist on the cozy Maxwell’s stage in his band’s own t-shirt was a 54-year-old member of rock royalty who I had seen perform in front of crowds hundreds of times this size. Sonic Youth may be on hiatus or it may be gone, but Thurston will keep playing – and keep playing well – for as long as he’s breathing. Chelsea Light Moving, as a band, isn’t Sonic Youth, but it isn’t just a dim facsimile of it, either. With Samara Lubelski (a well-known solo artist and member of Thurston’s solo band) on bass, John Moloney (Sunburned Hand of the Man) on drums and Keith Wood (Hush Arbors, Wooden Wand) on guitar, Chelsea Light Moving has an accomplished cast and its own personality. In some ways, CLM feels more like SST-era Sonic Youth – younger, hungrier, rawer. It seems fun to be in this band, in a way that’s almost impossible in a more established one.

Compared to an early performance back in September at 285 Kent (recording here), this time CLM felt more like a real band with real songs than a Moore & Friends jam session, with songs like “Alighted” more fully realized than their rough-sketch forms. There was also new material to be had, including the mid-tempo rocker “Sunday Stage”, which seemed like an homage to Wood’s other band, Hush Arbors. “Empires of Time” was dedicated to another rock n’ roll survivor, Roky Erickson, while “Staring Statues”, the set closer, gave us some Psychic Hearts-era Moore greatness. The entire show might have been worth the price of admission for the encore break alone, as Moore told stories, promised a fan he really would make some Feelies recordings he had said he would make fifteen years ago, and generally held court. He was calm, engaging, relaxed. Free of expectations. Chelsea Light Moving stands as a great band in its own right, and as a second act, it’s more than a worthy one.

We recorded this set from our usual spot in the venue with a flawless soundboard feed by longtime Maxwell’s engineer Carson Kopp and the band’s touring engineer Bentley.  I used a pair of Schoeps MK5 microphones for my source while nyctaper tried out his new set of Neumann TLM-102 large-diaphragm cardiod microphones.  We are offering both sources for your enjoyment, and both are outstanding. Grace Potter & the Nocturnals: February 23, 2013 Capitol Theatre (Port Chester, NY) – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

The Grateful Dead graced the stage of the Capitol Theatre on the 23rd of February exactly forty two years before this Grace Potter & the Nocturnals show. They may not be the Dead, but Grace Potter & the Nocturnals have clearly been sprinkled with some of that early 70s pixie dust. The band, formed in 2002, has come into their own over the last few years as their reputation as a live juggernaut spreads, but they could as easily be from ’71.  How they got their reputation isn’t hard to figure out; listen to Potter start belting the opening lines of “The Lion the Beast the Beat” from their 2012 record of the same name, and then pick your jaw up off the floor. If Grace Slick, Janis Joplin, Ann and Nancy Wilson, and Chrissie Hynde each took a turn at the mic, they might not be better than Potter. This woman has rare, powerful, lead singer pipes, the kind that are too often misspent winning reality singing competitions these days, rather than actually rocking.

GPN do plenty of rocking, mostly of the big-riff, huge chorus, blues-inflected variety. For a band that cut its chops for years in small venues as an “indie” band, everything about the Nocturnals’ sound circa-2013 is as big as Potter’s Hammond B-3.  While other time-machine acts have risen more quickly (e.g., Alabama Shakes, the Lumineers), GPN has the most polish, and arguably the most staying power.  Potter’s ability to put on a big rock show, while sounding and looking every inch the Big Time Rock Star, is the key ingredient, sure, but her crack band similarly looks and plays the part.

On this Saturday night, Potter and the Nocturnals positively owned the stage and the room for a full two hour-plus performance, including a particularly on-fire rendition of “Medicine” to close out the main set. We saw the band tear through old and new songs from their catalog, as well as choice covers of “Paint It Black” and “House of the Rising Sun”.  But perhaps the most memorable moment of the night came at the end, when GPN gave a direct tribute to their forebears in the form of their first-ever Dead cover, a faithful version of “Casey Jones”.  The howls of this crowd could probably be heard through the streets of Port Chester by the time Grace thanked us and walked off. Who says there aren’t any rock heroes anymore?

I recorded this set with Schoeps microphones in a Mid-Side configuration to allow optimal stereo separation without unnecessary “room boom”.  This was a noisy Saturday night crowd, which is painfully evident at points on the recording.  Otherwise, the sound quality is excellent. Arbouretum: February 15, 2013 Cameo Gallery – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

One of the first things you notice at an Arbouretum show is how clearly you can hear frontman and lyricist Dave Heumann’s vocals. He enunciates, he articulates each word carefully, in a way that suggests he wants you to actually hear what he’s singing. And if you don’t pay attention to that, you’re missing out. This is, after all, a band that wrote an entire album (The Gathering) inspired by Karl Jung’s The Red Book.  You could be forgiven, though, since along with those literary-inspired vocals, you’ll get a deep, Southern rock-inflected groove punctuated by Heumann’s own searing guitar solos. This show, which we helped to present, at Cameo Gallery proved a worthy sequel to their set at Glasslands back in 2011 when we last saw them. This set introduced us to new material from their excellent Thrill Jockey release, Coming Out of the Fog, plus some choice back catalog including one of my favorites, “St. Anthony’s Fire” from their split EP with Hush Arbors. Also not to be missed among the older material was the mighty set closer, “The Gathering”, while “World Split Open” was a highlight of the new material, which is some of the band’s most concise in years.  Helped by an outstanding mix from Josh of the Cameo Gallery, the band put out a flawless set before the packed house that surpassed the 2011 show in intensity, though not quite in length. The band is spending the rest of this month and March in the UK and Europe, so for our readers across the pond, now is your chance.

Bleeding Rainbow: February 12, 2013 Glasslands – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

Bleeding Rainbow just released their first album, Yeah Right, under that band name, but the husband-and-wife team of Rob Garcia and Sarah Everton have been making music together for several years. As the band Reading Rainbow, the pair put out a couple of lo-fi records that hinted at, but didn’t fully deliver on their potential. With Yeah Right, the band has a masterfully produced record that does. Now joined by Greg Frantz on drums and Al Creedon on guitar, the beefed-up lineup has developed a rich, shoegaze sound with a newly-minted pop sheen. This show at Glasslands was the first NYC gig for the Philadelphia band since the record’s release, and they came out blazing. After a brief false start, the band launched into an extended version of the record’s leadoff track, “Go Ahead”, followed by the record’s next to two tracks, “Pink Ruff” and “Drift Away”.  One thing that sets Bleeding Rainbow apart from many like-minded acts is that they aren’t afraid to actually sing rather than let their vocals be buried in the washes of MBV-style guitars. Though Everton provides the lead vocal on most tracks, Garcia’s harmonizing with her gives the songs added depth. The pair mesh well together live, feeding off of each other’s energy, and enjoying the added freedom lent by the new personnel.  Bleeding Rainbow have set themselves on a path that will give them even more room to grow, and we look forward to watching that happen.

Brian Settles & Central Union: January 16, 2013 Barbès – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

Virtually all  of the music we cover on this website, partly by design, but partly by inertia, falls somewhere along the spectrum of “rock” music. Even if that’s the case, that represents only a fraction of the music we listen to, or are interested in. New York remains a hotbed of activity for the still-vital jazz scene, and one of the easiest and most low-key ways to get some exposure to the scene right now is through The Palimpsestic Series, curated by Oscar Noriega at the Park Slope bar Barbès every Wednesday night.  On the advice of a friend, I settled in on a recent night for an outstanding set by the Washington, D.C. virtuoso tenor saxophonist Brian Settles and most of his band Central Union (Jeremy Carlstedt, on drums and Jean Marie Collatin Faye, on percussion and bassist Corcoran Holt). Settles’ 2011 album, Secret Handshake, represents the first record for the accomplished Duke Ellington School of the Arts veteran as a bandleader, a role  into which he fits admirably. This set featured two of those compositions, “Zui Quan” and “Soulnimsky”, a cover of John Coltrane’s “Reverend King”, and three new numbers. Some rock shows make me flat-out bored these days; watching Settles and his band up close in this setting was riveting. In this postage-stamp-sized room, it’s not hard to arrive early enough to get a front-row seat to the action, and I would encourage live jazz newbies (like me) to take advantage of a chance to not only listen to the players, but watch how they interact with each other and the piece of music. Especially as live music is concerned, jazz (especially of the more avant-garde variety) is an undeservedly obscure art form. There is a whole world of exceptional performances out there – like this one – if you take the time to seek them out.

Settles will next appear in New York on this Saturday, Feb 2., when he and Carlstedt appear as a duo as part of the Evolving Music Series, located at 107 Suffolk Street in Manhattan.  Their set time is 10:30pm, and you can get tickets at the door.

I recorded this set directly in front of the band using the mid-side technique with a Schoeps MK5 cardiod microphone as the center channel and a Schoeps MK8 figure-8 microphone as the “side”, which allows the recordist to vary the width of the stereo image.  This recording provides exceptional width and clarity, though the instruments may be too localized for some people’s taste if they listen through headphones.  Enjoy!

I can still recall my short, sharp gasp upon first hearing Shara Worden, aka My Brightest Diamond, bring the song “Be Brave” to its climax. It was one of those precious moments for me when an artist’s gift comes into focus, and goosebumps and rapt awe follow; when you realize you’re hearing somebody who is that good.  The song’s theme of metamorphosis is expressed in both the mask Worden wears while performing it, as well as in its explosive peak.  “Be changed, or be undone” is the song’s refrain and message, and it is an apt one for Worden’s music.  With a singular vision that combines classical training, cabaret flair and colorful arrangements, Worden’s palette has few borders and her ability to use it has few equals. Her music evolves, progresses, breathes, grows.

Like Björk, David Byrne, and The Dirty Projectors, Worden achieves the feat of making intellectually engaging music without alienating her music’s pop core. That skill affords her both the critical acclaim that she so deserves, as well as a dedicated, educated audience large enough to easily fill the Bowery Ballroom on a Wednesday in the dead of winter, after a holiday weekend. At least New York’s freezing temperatures of late are no worse than the weather conditions in Worden’s adopted home of Detroit, where she decamped in the late 00s after spending the formative years of her musical career here. Surveying the adoring crowd, she told us she missed us.

Now three albums in under the My Brightest Diamond moniker, Worden’s writing has never been sharper or more engaging than on 2011’s All Things Will Unwind, which has a follow-up in the works.  Worden played three of these new songs, “That Point When”, “Looking at the Sun” and “A Bronze Head” at this show. The first two tracks suggested a continuing evolution toward the orchestral pop of All Things Will Unwind, but “A Bronze Head” is pure angular rock, pairing No Wave-ish guitars with a soaring vocal that reminds you, if you’ve forgotten, of Worden’s opera training.  After last seeing My Brightest Diamond in smaller configurations duo recently (once at a private Obama fundraiser, once at a late afternoon performance at MoMA), experiencing the project as a full band, doing a full set, reminded me of just how awesome the range of Worden’s styles can be; the straight-ahead rock of “Golden Star” from her first record and “Inside A Boy” from her second fit right alongside songs like “Be Brave” and “Escape Routes”. Worden is indeed a brave artist; she is also an indisputably great one.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK5 microphones and a soundboard feed of the flawless house mix by longtime Bowery engineer, Kenny. The sound quality is outstanding, perhaps the best recording I have made in this venue. Enjoy!

Hospitality: January 10, 2013 Bowery Ballroom – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

Hospitality‘s eponymous LP on Merge Records was one of the more underrated records of 2012. Short on gimmicks but filled with concise pop songwriting and excellent hooks, Hospitality is one of those records that may not blow your mind, but it can make your afternoon.  Here in New York, the band sold out Glasslands handily for the record release party, and played other area shows at bigger venues like Brooklyn Bowl. But their Bowery moment ended up being postponed; this show was originally scheduled for the week in the wake of Hurricane Sandy, when Manhattan’s best-loved venue was without power. Despite that bit of bad luck, the band put on a hell of a show for us at this rescheduled date. Along with some of their finest ear worms like “Friends of Friends” and “Betty Wang”, the band debuted three new songs, “Nightingale”, “Experience” and “Going Out”. But the set’s highlight may have been them playing both sides of their 2012 seven-inch release back-to-back in a seamless jam, with “The Drift” moving seamlessly into “Monkey”. The new songs have a slightly harder edge, and that suits the band well. I am glad they got this much-deserved second chance at their Bowery moment; Hospitality has much more to offer.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK5 cardiod microphones and an excellent soundboard feed from the Bowery Ballroom’s longtime FOH, Kenny, with the band’s mix provided by Hospitality’s own FOH, Jiwoo Han. The sound is excellent. Enjoy!

Eidetic Seeing: November 27, 2012 Union Pool – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

Eidetic Seeing are continuing work into next year on a successor to their first LP, Drink The Sun, and since I last caught up with them at Public Assembly earlier this year, they’ve already made some evolutions in the new stuff. On a night filled with different psych/noise leaning artists, the Brooklyn psych rockers were easily the youngest band on the bill. If it scared them to be opening for Gibby Haynes, Dave Shuford’s latest project and a Japanese guitar god, they didn’t show it.  Among the treats of this 33-minute set was the set closer and a brand new track, “K-2”, along with evolved versions of the new “White Flight” and “Ashplant Blues” that will appear on the band’s forthcoming album. Their last album, Drink the Sun, recently appeared on a few year-end lists despite not even being released this year! Keep these guys on your radar screen in 2013 – there’s more to come.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK5 cardiod microphones in the balcony and a soundboard feed from the house.  The board feed was used minimally, as you will notice the keyboards were mixed a bit more loudly than ideal in the feed.  The sound of this set is excellent. Enjoy!
