Suzuki Junzo: November 27, 2012 Union Pool – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

The Japanese guitarist Suzuki Junzo‘s latest album is entitled Ode To A Blue Ghost, and that is an apt description for the spectral noise that Junzo wrings from his guitar. I was not familiar with Junzo before this show, but he has had a long career in the Japanese guitar underground, cranking out a host of self- and label-released records. This show at Union Pool with fellow avant-gardists Rhyton, Eidetic Seeing and the Gibby Haynes and Kohoutek-affiliated Ultimate Vag gave fans of far-out psych and noise a lot to love, but even the musicians in the other bands were somewhat unfamiliar with Junzo’s work. With an undercurrent of blues, Junzo’s guitar sounds can run a surprising emotional range, blending the familiar with the unfamiliar. This show represented a fairly rare chance to see Junzo outside his native Japan, and we are thrilled to have been there to capture it.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK5 microphones and a soundboard feed by the house engineer, Doug. This favors the soundboard mix as it is all guitar, and other than a few spots of DI distortion, it is excellent. Enjoy!

We had several nights with incredible collaborations. We had “quieter” nights, and ones dedicated to guitar freakouts. But the final night of Yo La Tengo‘s 2012 run was the night for obscure cover songs and left-field tunes. Of course, there was also a fitting almost entire-set collaboration, with Norman Blake of Teenage Fanclub, whom YLT had opened for back in the 90s. YLT also brought up several other special guests, including Don Fleming, WFMU DJ Gaylord Fields, and of course, Ira’s mother Marilyn, who sang the traditional YLT Hanukkah closer, “My Little Corner of the World.” But it was the raft of both obscure and more-common YLT covers that defined this night; of the 19 songs played, fully 11 of them were covers, along with the new song, “Ohm” that debuted here to lead off the set.

Ira had promised early on that “we won’t play a two-hour set” but the band all but did so anyway, clocking in at just under an hour and 50 minutes’ worth without seeming worn out from eight nights of consecutive long shows at all. After a hilarious lecture from the night’s “comedy act” Gaylord Fields (on the topic of Beatles imitators), Fields found his way back to the stage for an encore that included a hilarious Rice Krispies-themed cover of The Rolling Stones’ “Brown Sugar” and the Burt Bacharach and Hal David song “Little Red Book”. In between were a host of amazing moments, many with Blake joining on vocals, but the band’s own numbers, like “Moby Octopad” and this night’s superjam, “I Heard You Looking,” shone, too.

As Ira said, these shows – which are performed by everyone involved for free – take a lot out of the band. They represent one band’s ultimate expression of holiday generosity, to their fans, to their peers, to their community, to their city, and to their own legacy. Far from being de rigeur, we know that every Hanukkah season that YLT performs these shows is a gift. We’d like to thank the members of Yo La Tengo, the other musicians and comedians involved, the entire staff at Maxwell’s (but especially Carson and Mitch) and the fans whose enthusiasm for these recordings makes the expense and effort of making them available worthwhile.

Tonight’s show was a benefit for Jersey Shore Relief. As the band pointed out repeatedly during the eight nights, these shows are a bargain for the fans who attend them at the low ticket price charged. They are even more a bargain for those downloading for free from this site. While we will not require that you donate in order to download the show, we expect that you will donate to the cause that was the reason for the band playing it.

Donate to Waves for Water’s Hurricane Sandy Relief Initiative

When bewildered people ask me why I have spent a significant chunk of my December so far attending and recording Yo La Tengo shows at Maxwell’s in (currently hard-to-reach) Hoboken, I usually point them to this performance from December 7, 2010. That show had everything you look for in a YLT Hanukkah set – amazing setlist of old songs, new songs and covers; lots of extended guitar jams, and a special guest (Nels Cline) who added a whole new dimension to the band’s sound. Several of this year’s shows had that, too, including Sunday night with honorary members of the Sun Ra Arkestra and Fred Armisen, and Tuesday night with Kid Millions of Oneida. I thought that for me, Sunday would be the impossible show to top this year, but this Friday night show proved me wrong. I am not ready for it to de-throne 12/7/10 on my list of all-time favorites, but having now seen the entire 2012 run, I’m sure it is my favorite of this year.

For this set, singer-songwriter Andrew Bird joined the band for the entire performance on violin. Bird gave added a graceful, somber element to some quieter numbers like “Last Days of Disco” and Dylan’s “I’ll Keep It With Mine”. Though the violin naturally lent itself to quiet songs, this night saw yet another set of monster guitar songs as well, including an absolutely scorching “Flying Lesson (Hot Chicken #1)”. But it might be the main set’s closer, the Roky Erickson arrangement of the Velvet Underground’s “Heroin” that was the ultimate highlight; even compared to the version played last year, this was an inspired rendition, and Bird’s violin squealing along gave it added intensity.

If this had not already been my favorite show by that point, YLT sealed the deal with the encore. For the second encore song, the band was joined by Devendra Banhart. The song, Jorma Kaukonen’s “Song For the North Star”, was dedicated to “the tapers”, as Kaukonen’s band Hot Tuna was once a longtime favorite of the taping community (why they no longer are is the subject of another post). While of course it was gratifying to be acknowledged by the band at all, it was more gratifying to see such a unique cover at this point in the set, which the band then closed with another cover, “If I Only Had A Match.” Given how much these Hanukkah shows take out of the band, it was a testament to their creative energy and love for what they are doing that they absolutely killed it on their second-to-last night. Not that Night 8 (coming soon), didn’t have some treats of its own…

I recorded this set in the same manner as our other Hanukkah recordings, again with Schoeps MK5 microphones in the cardiod setting and an excellent soundboard feed by the band’s engineer, Mark. Enjoy!

Text “Brooklyn” to 25383 to donate $10 to the Brooklyn Recovery Fund

For the fifth night of Hanukkah, Yo La Tengo dedicated their show to Brooklyn and to benefit the Brooklyn Recovery Fund, and honored the borough’s rich hip-hop tradition with the somewhat off-the-wall guest opener of El-P. If special guest stars during the main set are your favorite thing about these Hanukkah shows, tonight was not your night, as we didn’t get to experience a rapping Ira, James or Georgia or find hip-hop beats blaring behind “Mr. Tough”. But if Ira’s patented guitar freakouts are more your bag, then this set that went more or less from quiet to loud gave you plenty to love. From the opening solo of “From A Motel 6” into “I Should Have Known Better” to the screaming three-song suite of “Deeper Into Movies” into “Some Kinda Fatigue” into “Sugarcube”, this was a night where the band could shine without any added players. And after that trio came the sprawling “The Story of Yo La Tengo”, a song that, if any in their catalog, is worthy of the name, evolving from a spare organ intro into a full-blown squall of guitar, Ira barely visible from the back of Maxwell’s as he hunched over to will the notes from his instrument. While by Hanukkah standards this set could be billed as a “conventional” one (albeit, one that also saw the debut of another new song, “Cornelia and Jane”), it was, in the story of this 2012 Hanukkah run, no less vital.

I recorded this set in the same manner as the other nights, this time with Schoeps MK5 microphones to produce a fuller, warmer sound. Like all of the recordings released so far, this one benefited from a beautiful house mix by the band’s engineer Mark, and is another outstanding document of the band. Enjoy!

Rhyton: November 27, 2012 Union Pool – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

After their thrilling performance at the NYCTaper Northside Festival Showcase back in June, I couldn’t wait for Rhyton to hit Union Pool last week so I could see them perform songs from their latest, The Emerald Tablet. Or at least, I assumed that would be the case, seeing that the record just dropped in September. But frontman/guitarist/other instrumentalist Dave Shuford, bassist Jimy Seitang and drummer Spencer Herbst aren’t the sort of musicians to “tour an album” or pause their creative process. So, instead of Emerald tracks, the band gave us a completely new pair of free-flowing compositions that are so new they only have working titles. These compositions are more of a piece stylistically with the band’s previous record, Rhyton, with a noisier, less Eastern-influenced feel than The Emerald Tablet. But, when you are dealing with a trio of improvisers like the Rhyton gang, it’s never correct to say anything is exactly like the past.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK5 cardiod microphones from the center of the balcony, augmented by a soundboard feed from the house engineer, Doug. The sound is excellent. Enjoy!

Port St. Willow: October 18, 2012 NYCTaper CMJ Day Show, Cake Shop – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

The documented connection between Port St. Willow frontman Nick Principe and childhood friend Peter Silbermann of The Antlers goes beyond their shared background. Both have a grandiosity and mournfulness to their sounds; both share a similar vocal style – a soaring falsetto that is its own instrument, at times obscuring the lyrics themselves. But where The Antlers lean more toward narrative storytelling and show a continued passion for rock dynamics, Principe is more comfortable in the realm of more obtuse, atmospheric composition. The songs on his debut record, Holiday, offer a variety of textures to plumb; some have described the record as “airy”. After catching an impressive set opening for The Antlers this summer at Glasslands, Port St. Willow was right at the top of the list of bands to play our unofficial CMJ Day show at Cake Shop, and this set delivered on the promise of that earlier experience. Principe, backed by his touring live band, played a set of six songs in a near-seamless 35-minute set. Even in mid-afternoon, the 10+ minute opener “Hollow” wowed the sizable crowd as Principe & Co. built his delicate compositions from scratch before our eyes. The recording that you have here is arguably the best quality of all that we recorded during this show, and other than a couple of spots where the vocal mic distorted during “Tourist”, it is virtually flawless. Mac McCaughan: October 18, 2012 Merge Records CMJ Showcase, Mercury Lounge – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

Merge Records co-founder and Superchunk and Portastatic frontman Mac McCaughan has more than earned his beloved status in the indie rock community. His contributions to the Chapel Hill and Durham, NC music scenes, and music in general, could have taken two lifetimes, and his confessional, direct songwriting continues to resonate and remain fresh more than two decades into his music career. As for Merge, the label has been one of those remarkable and rare successes in music, remaining staunchly independent and committed to promoting quality releases – and finally earning a Grammy for its current mega-artist, Arcade Fire. So, after we wrapped up our own CMJ showcase down the street at Cake Shop, the NYCTaper crew headed over to Mercury Lounge where McCaughan joined William Tyler, Mount Moriah, Reigning Sound, Eleanor Friedberger and Telekinesis for Merge’s CMJ Showcase.

McCaughan performed as a solo act, an uncommon treat to see in the New York area. As usual, this set combined new and old Superchunk songs with Portastatic classics like “Autumn Got Dark.” The set also included a brand new number that McCaughan said should appear on a Superchunk release next year, which we are streaming below. Though the singer-songwriter format lacked some of the punch of a normal Superchunk gig, it gave McCaughan’s lyrics and voice the spotlight. McCaughan’s exuberant, earnest delivery still comes across like that of a brash, young artist, and the themes of his writing continue to prove their timelessness. On a night that in many ways celebrated McCaughan’s success, this set was another one.

I recorded this set with a soundboard feed provided by house engineer Kevin Mazzarelli, with Schoeps MK5 microphones providing just a bit of room ambiance. The quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Oneida: September 8, 2012 Hopscotch Festival Day Show (Raleigh, NC) – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

Our friends in Oneida were a late but welcome addition to the “Megafaun and Friends” day show at Hopscotch Music Festival, and as usual, nobody knew what to expect in terms of the setlist. Joined by a number of special guests throughout the set (including the ubiquitous man-of-the-festival, the drummer Chris Corsano), Oneida filled the streets of downtown Raleigh, NC with their complex improvisational post-rock. For this show, we were treated to a rendition of the band’s LP Preteen Weaponry, which this site also recorded a live performance of back in June of last year. As we eagerly await their next album, A List of the Burning Mountains, out on November 13, this just-over-half-hour set of another of the band’s classic albums whetted our appetites for what they have in store for us in just under two weeks.

I recorded this set with a soundboard feed provided by the day’s hardworking sound team, plus Schoeps MK5 omnidirectional microphones. The sound is excellent, after some initial adjustments to the board mix. Enjoy!

As Hurricane Sandy’s damage continues to be assessed here on the East Coast, it seems grimly appropriate to highlight the CMJ performance of an outstanding New Orleans-based band that represents that city’s history as well as its brightening future. Hurray For the Riff Raff have been favorites of this site for a while now, and we did everything we could – including picking them up from the airport – to make it possible for them to play our unofficial CMJ day show at Cake Shop, just hours after they got off a plane from Germany. If this minimalist version of the band – lead singer and guitarist Alynda Lee Segarra and guitarist Sam Doores, plus special guest Matt Davidson of Spirit Family Reunion on fiddle – was worn out from traveling, they didn’t show it during this acoustic set. In fact, Alynda, Sam and Matt looked to be having a hell of a lot of fun as they played stripped-down versions of new songs, older songs, and a choice cover of the Ronettes classic, “Be My Baby”. After seeing a fantastic performance from the band back in August, it was a special treat to be able to see them again so soon. While the band has returned to New Orleans to enjoy some much-needed time to de-compress, we’ll be happy to welcome them back as soon as they are ready.

I recorded this set with a soundboard feed provided by the day’s engineer Justin, plus Schoeps MK5 microphones mounted at the front of the stage. The sound is excellent. Enjoy!

Hans Chew plays a brand of old-time, piano-driven rock n’ roll you may not have even realized you were nostalgic for. As the piano man for Brooklyn country-psych stalwarts D. Charles Speer & the Helix, Chew proved himself as a composer and vocalist in his own right on his debut album Tennessee & Other Stories. Imbued with a honky-tonk barroom quality, Chew’s piano playing is even more central to his solo project than it is to his work with Speer, and that’s all to the good. As a Southerner now living in New York, Chew’s work remains rooted down south, and incorporates elements of country, bluegrass and Southern boogie. Like D. Charles Speer, Chew isn’t simply a revival act, but a modern performer who has taken a classic, regionally-rooted sound and imbued it with new ideas and new vitality.

We were thrilled to have a chance to invite Chew to play our fifth annual unofficial CMJ day show at Cake Shop, and Chew and the band delivered in a big way, with a set of almost all-new material that continued on Tennessee’s promise. “Strange Love” shone among the new numbers, with its funky guitar groove and catchy refrain. “Junker’s Blues”, which closed the set, was the kind of timeless-but-new number we expect from Chew, and it ended his part of the afternoon on a high note. We would have loved to have Chew at our show in any capacity, but getting this rare preview of new material made it an even bigger honor.

I recorded this set with house engineer Justin’s mix combined with Schoeps MK5 microphones in the cardiod setting mounted on the ceiling just in front of the stage lip and spread wide. The results are outstanding. Enjoy!
