Psychic Ills: November 9, 2012 Knitting Factory – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

The Brooklyn band Psychic Ills hit the Knitting Factory a few weeks ago along with compadres Guardian Alien (recording HERE)  and Starring (recording coming soon) in preparation for the wide-ranging tour of China they have now embarked upon. By the look and sound of things, the foursome were ready to go, as they weaved together the druggy, deep grooves they have become known for under hushed lights. The band’s most recent effort, and first for Sacred Bones, Hazed Dream, was the most-represented on this night, with the band leading off with three fifths of that record’s excellent A side, including their most “poppy” (by their standards) number, “Mind Daze”. Along with the Hazed Dream material, the other half of the set touched down at various points from the band’s back catalog, with two songs from 2006’s Dins, “Diamond City” from their 2005 Mental Violence II EP, and “Way Of” from the largely misunderstood Mirror Eye joining the band’s most recent single, “Take Me With You”, which they released on a split 7-inch with Moon Duo earlier this year. While the “psychedelic rock” genre (massively broad as it now is) usually relies upon setting a mood, the Ills take things further in that direction than most, serving up the set as a more or less unified piece of music with guitar transitions instead of stage banter, substituting their songs’ evolutions and contrasts in tone and tempo for big, room-rocking singles. Expect a new record from the Ills next year, which we hope to continue with the strong style established on Hazed Dream.

The L.A. band He’s My Brother She’s My Sister have multiple personalities: Their twang suggests country, their style suggests retro, the natural bounce to their songs suggests a touch of swing. You cannot fairly call them any of these things, but once it’s all happening on stage, it makes sense – and it’s a fun, theatrical affair to boot.  This pre-Sandy, pre-Halloween weekend show at the Knitting Factory seems like it was a long time ago now, but it otherwise would have been the perfect way for its crowd to enter the big weekend.  He’s My Brother She’s My Sister (which does include siblings Robert and Rachel Kolar) is a millennial party band through and through, and if you couldn’t get that from the upbeat first chorus of “How’M I Gonna Get Back Home”, their costumes probably gave it away. Their fan base – drawn heavily from those millennials – seemed to know them well, and they did their part by partying their asses off through the full hour. And they should have – in just over one hour, this band gave us a veritable tour of some of the best music of the last fifty years, from the dancefloor ready honky tonk of “Let’s Go” to the 60s rock of “Escape Tonight” and the combo of bluesy guitars and Broadway exuberance of “Touch the Lightning”. The band has just released its debut full length record, Nobody Dances In this Town, and while no recorded music could fully bottle the lightning of the band’s live show, it comes pretty damn close. Appropriate to the Halloween spirit, the set ended with the band’s signature number “Tales That I Tell”, made all the more festive by the band inviting scores of costumed, dancing audience members onstage with them.

I recorded this set with a soundboard feed provided by the Knit’s great engineer, Rob, as well as new MBHO cardiod microphones. While a malfunction in the microphone bodies results in some odd-sounding distortion during the applause between tracks at points, the sound of the recording is overall excellent, and does not have this flaw during the music itself. Chelsea Light Moving: September 12, 2012 285 Kent – Flac/MP3/Streaming

Chelsea Light Moving is Thurston Moore’s new band. As Sonic Youth is on hiatus and has left the future of the band somewhat of a mystery, the various members have pursued their own projects. Thurston chose to debut Chelsea Light Moving with a series of concerts throughout Europe, but their very first show in NYC took place in mid-September at 285 Kent. The show was presented by Issue Project as a Benefit for Tom Carter, which acidjack outlined in his post of the Gunn-Truscinski Duo set from this show. Suffice to say, we applaud the artists who performed for Tom at this show. You too can support Tom by following this link.

Chelsea Light Moving has released four songs at Matador and through various media outlets in anticipation of a full length release later this year, or early next. At 285 Kent, the band began the set with those four songs. We’re streaming “Frank O’Hara Hit” in which Thurston riffs on the concept of having a birthday in July. Its also the most “familiar” sounding song of the bunch for SY fans. The balance of the set consisted of material that has not yet been released, and the song titles are approximated from our research into info about CLM online. The song we’ve titled “I Come to Get Wasted” (at the suggestion of this Spin review of the show) gave Thurston an opportunity to really stretch and his guitar playing on this track is notable for both its aggression and imagination. We expect that Thurston will continue to grow this material and we look forward to the development of this new project.

I recorded this show in the usual manner for this venue. The Sennheiser Cards were mounted near the stage and after requesting and receiving permission to supplement the somewhat boomy room with a board feed, we mixed in about 25% of the board for clarity in the vocals and guitars. The result is an overall excellent recording, as SY’s FOH Aaron mixed this difficult room about as well as anyone has done. Enjoy!

The guitarist Steve Gunn joined longtime collaborator John Truscinski (with whom he comprises the unit Gunn-Truscinski Duo), and bassist Justin Tripp (along with Laura Ortman on violin for most of the set) for a very special trio performance to benefit the guitarist Tom Carter. Carter, who has worked on many projects over the years but is best known for his work in Charalambides, contracted a serious form of pneumonia while on tour in Europe, and has incurred significant medical bills while being treated in intensive care and, more recently, at recovery centers in both Germany and the United States. This show at 285 Kent, sponsored by the Issue Project Room, was designed to raise funds for Carter’s ongoing recovery. The community of avant-garde guitarists and musicians is incredibly tight-knit and supportive, and this contribution in New York was one of many efforts to support Tom around the world.

This set consisted of both new material and work from Gunn’s two most recent LPs for Three Lobed Recordings, one highlight of which was “The Lurker”, Gunn’s side from the out-of-print Three Lobed 10th anniversary box set. For that song, Gunn & co. were joined by Marc Orleans, who most recently collaborated with Carter on the Northern Spy Records release Eleven Twenty Nine. The song, like much of Gunn’s work, showcases a range of styles and unique phrasing, and Orleans’ participation made it all the more memorable. Streaming below is a rollicking full-band version of the 2012 Gunn classic “Trailways Gramble”, which appeared on Three Lobed’s compilation of work of eight outstanding American underground guitarists, Eight Trails, One Path. While a lot of this night’s crowd may have been there for the headliner, Thurston Moore’s Chelsea Light Moving, it was perhaps this unique collaboration of guitar talents that was the most fitting tribute to Carter and the work he has done to this point in his life. nyctaper and I recorded this set in our usual manner for this venue with Sennheiser MKH-8040 microphones and a soundboard feed. While 285 Kent can always be a bit of a challenge with quieter acts, we feel this is a recording of excellent quality. Enjoy!

The Everymen: October 7, 2012 Public Assembly – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

PopMatters and a few others stole my thunder when they suggested that The Everymen‘s new record, New Jersey Hardcore, might be better understood with the word “Hardcore” first instead of last. PopMatters didn’t intend that as an insult, and neither do I. The simple fact is, this is the sort of band that revels in, rather than shies from, its home state, and the tropes The Everymen borrow from fellow Garden State artists are some of the state’s most lovable. Musically, they are not, despite some punk leanings, “hardcore” in the sense that, say, Minor Threat was. But they’re a lot of fun.

This show at Public Assembly was the band’s release party for the record, which dropped October 9 on Killing Horse Records, and most of this crowd seemed thankful the following Monday was a holiday. Gruff-voiced frontman Mike V is the band’s beating heart, its big, rough-around-the-edges lovable – yes – everyman who you’d probably be cheering for even if you’d never met the guy. But sharing that stage is a bona fide rock band that includes sax, keyboards and its own version of Pavement’s percussionist/mascot Bob Nastanovich, and one that could power through an 18-song set on a Sunday night and gave a lot of different looks in the process. Consider just one sequence of covers during this show, when the band played Bobby Vinton’s “I Love How You Love”, then Reigning Sound’s “As Long”, then Midnight Oil’s “Beds Are Burning” – all pretty faithfully. The Billy Joel and (you guessed it) Springsteen covers came later on. But the band’s ability to mimic other bands shouldn’t take away from their original material, which also covers a lot of ground.  The leadoff track, “Dreams” showed off the band’s punk influences, as did “Coney Island High” which brought co-lead vocalist Catherine Herrick to the forefront. Other songs, like 2011’s “Ballad of Sarin” head in a different direction, with a prominent sax lead and a swing-y bounce. Much like the Garden State’s most famous artist, you get the sense that The Everymen’s main priority is putting on the most fun rock n’ roll show possible, wherever that takes them or however they need to do it. With the Jersey flag flying, the band’s encore was an extended version of “Boss Johnny & the Get Lucky”, a perfect coda to what Mike V called the band’s best show yet. Well, lucky him – it was also his birthday. As one of the audience members who had to work the next day, I took off right after the show, but when I left, there were still plenty of admirers looking to buy him a birthday shot.

I recorded this set with a soundboard feed from the Public Assembly house engineer, combined with AKG 414 large-diaphragm microphones.  Though the vocals are a tad low in the mix in the beginning, this is generally an excellent capture. Enjoy!

Melvins “Lite”: October 4, 2012 Music Hall of Williamsburg – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

The “Lite” version of the Melvins (one drummer instead of two, no electric bass) is still a hell of a lot heavier than most bands on their best day, and this show at Music Hall of Williamsburg continued that trend. The band is on a quixotic mission to play 50 states in 51 days (possibly setting a world record), and this Brooklyn show found the band a little over halfway through their quest. If they were burned out from the relentless schedule, they didn’t show it; the band came out charging, in good spirits, and as ear-bustingly loud as ever. Even without their usual dual-drummer setup, one Dale Crover can provide a whole lot of percussion, and Buzz Osborne’s guitars and Trevor Dunn’s upright bass similarly held their own. Dunn’s rocking out with the upright bass was a special thrill, as he manhandled the big bass like a smaller electric, playing on his back, twirling it over his head, and doing just about everything but smash it to bits all over the stage.  This set included some crowd pleasers from the band’s best-known album, Houdini  (“Hooch”, “Set Me Straight” and “Sky Pup”), but as usual, dug deep into the back catalog, kicking off with “Eye Flys” from the band’s first album, Gluey Porch Treatments. One highlight at several stops on this tour has been the “Inner Ear Rupture” and “Shevil” combo, and that closed the night’s set in special style, with the song stretching to a full 12 minutes. The band has a ways to go before they get the record, and we’re pulling for them!

Johnny Fried Chicken Boy and I were in the balcony of the venue in our usual spot for this set.  We used two pairs of mics that made roughly equal recordings, so much so that there didn’t seem to be much point combining the two sources.  This is my Schoeps MK41 supercardiod microphones in tightly-spaced configuration to provide as much direct sound as possible. The results are comparable to the site’s other excellent Melvins recordings from Music Hall, which you can locate by clicking the “Melvins” tag below. Enjoy!

Thee Oh Sees: September 24, 2012 Death By Audio – Flac/MP3/Streaming

As I wrote in the review of Ty Segall’s set, this show was one of the most fun nights of the year. DBA has always been a venue with a kinetic energy, but on a night when two bands who these days play much larger venues came in for a special secret show, the atmosphere was electric. Thee Oh Sees are a great live band — leader John Dwyer is indefatigable, and on this night the band played an extended set. From the very outset opening with “The Dream”, the band never really came up for air as they delivered garage-rock rave ups one after another. Seemingly at the end of their show, the crowd wouldn’t let them leave the stage and Thee Oh Sees played two more songs, including an extended jam on “Destroyed Fortress” that veered back into the melody of “Dead Energy” before closing at more than ten minutes. We don’t expect to see Thee Oh Sees at a venue the size of DBA again, but this show certainly left a lasting memory.

Vetiver: September 21, 2012 Glasslands – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

Vetiver aren’t the kind of band you usually find at the top of the bill on a Friday night at Glasslands. The Williamsburg club is best known for cutting-edge young rock and wild DJ nights – all good things, but not exactly this band’s style. Vetiver, on the other hand, seems at times to come from a different era, with a measured, melodic 60s-inspired sound that has more to do with Simon and Garfunkel and the Grateful Dead than what’s is trending in Brooklyn right now. They are a grown-up style of band in sound, style and sentiment, and they are outstanding at what they do. It’s a testament to the good taste of both the PopGun Booking team (who run Glasslands) and that of the ATP Festival, where the band was playing the following night, that quality counts for more than trend-following. Like fellow travelers and Sub Pop labelmates Fruit Bats, Vetiver’s music transcends trends and era-specific fixations; while there’s a strong vein of the late 60s going on with the San Francisco band, their melodic, lightly psychedelic sound doesn’t simply stay there. The leadoff track to their 2011 album and current release, The Errant Charm, was one of my favorites of last year, a slow-builder whose anthemic acoustic guitar riff combines with frontman Andy Cabic’s sweet, soothing vocal to create a six-and-a-half minute slice of blissed-out perfection. This show found the band playing to a fully-packed house, and despite the early set time (Friday nights at Glasslands means late-night DJs) they gave us a fantastic 13-song set into the 65 minutes they had. The set focused on Errant Charm material, but they did reach all the way back to their 2005 debut to give us “Luna Sea” and to its 2006 double LP followup, To Find Me Gone for “Idle Ties”.  The band made the most of their encore, too,firing off a faithful rendition of Townes Van Zandt’s “Standin'”.

I recorded this set with Berliner CM-33 cardiod microphones and a soundboard feed provided by Josh Thiel, the head engineer at Glasslands.  The sound quality is excellent.  Enjoy!

Cold Showers: September 20, 2012 Glasslands – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

Cold Showers come from LA, but their influences hail from less sunny shores. Stylistically, they’re a Manchester band through and through, with a heavy nod to Joy Division in particular. Lead singer Jonathan Weinberg (also drummer of La Sera) anchors the proceedings with his deep baritone, backed by insistent keys and swirling guitars for the full post-punk effect. Opening for The Soft Moon at Glasslands to an already-full venue, Cold Showers dispensed with the bullshit and launched right into “Alight”, which should appear on their forthcoming LP on Dais Records, Love and Regret. By the time “Violent Cries” got going three songs in, the entire crowd was won over. Like the best of the Factory Records bands of yore, Cold Showers take that dark energy and marry it to flawless pop instincts; “In Terms of Pleasure”, in particular, is a memorably well-crafted song, not to mention a killer song title and chorus, and the newly-released single “BC” is right up there with it. This set was brief by design – only six songs – but it whet our appetite for more. If more UK-like weather is needed to inspire this type of music, well, I know a certain borough of NYC where this band could fit right in…

I recorded this set in the same manner as the Soft Moon recording, with Audio Technica 3031 microphones onstage together with a well-balanced soundboard feed. Like the Soft Moon recording, this one is a winner. Enjoy!

Lightning Love: September 7, 2012 Spike Hill – Flac/MP3/Streaming + Playing NYCTaper CMJ Show!

When we announced the first couple of bands that are playing the NYCTaper CMJ Day Party this year, we teased/hinted at the other bands on the bill. Lightning Love, who I described as an “irresistible Michigan-based pop trio” will be opening the show. The description is partly based on the vocals of Leah Diehl, whose voice captures an earnestness and vulnerability that fits their quick and quirky pop songs perfectly. At Spike Hill a few weeks ago, Lightning Love accomplished a rarity. As an out-of-town band playing immediately after a local band with friends and family in the audience, their pop hooks quieted the chatter of the other band’s fans and turned heads. The balance of their too-short set was played to an attentive room and undoubtedly earned them some new fans, including yours truly.

I recorded this set with the Sennheiser cards on the stand in front of the soundboard and mixed with a board feed. The early chatter and mix issues were resolved after a few songs and the result is an excellent recording. Enjoy!
