Kevin Morby has been part of a couple of bands we love, The Babies and, in particular, Woods, so we are excited to be a part of his next musical phase. Kevin left New York for the sunnier climes of LA this past year, and his record Harlem River is a bit of a wistful sayonara to his time here. Compared to his other bands, the record moves at a more sedate pace than the Babies, and doesn’t rely on the guitar freakouts that underline the best songs in the Woods catalog. The new material makes the case for Morby as a songwriter, without having to play loud and fast to make a point. The songs are reflective, mature and most importantly, memorable. Harlem River was easily one of the year’s most underrated records.

Morby opened a packed Mercury Lounge on this Thursday night that was already full for his set. Cate Le Bon is featured on one of the Harlem River tracks, “Slow Train”, so it makes sense that they’d share some of the same crowd. He hadn’t been to New York in a while, he said, and his first offerings to get us in his good graces were two new songs, “The Jester, The Tramp and the Acrobat” and the faster “The Ballad of Arlo Jones”, which is streaming below. From there, he hit the highlights of Harlem River’s eight songs, including a rendition of the title track that offered some extended guitar work, and the album’s logical single, “Miles, Miles, Miles”. For a closer, Morby went back to the well of new material, delivering the excellent “All My Life”, a song that shows that his new journey is only in its beginning stages. Expect to see the new songs on a forthcoming LP (timing TBD). You can follow Kevin on Twitter to keep up with his latest.

Alex Bleeker & The Freaks: July 27, 2013 Bowery Ballroom – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

I know I’ve thrown around the term “indie rock jam-band” before. But it’s hard to find a more appropriate label for Alex Bleeker & The Freaks, who used their three quarters of an hour opening for fellow Brooklynites Woods at Bowery Ballroom to play more than a few songs that hearkened to an earlier era in tone and in their ability to flow seamlessly from one to the other. Bleeker, who also serves as bassist in Real Estate, had a birthday on this night, and he treated himself by playing songs that I suspect reminded him of home. You knew this set was going to be right when the band led off with the Grateful Dead’s “Let the Good Times Roll” and went from there into a mix of songs from the band’s latest record and fun-loving covers that did exactly what the first one promised.

If you listen to their new record, How Far Away, you’d be forgiven for the cheap comparison that Bleeker & the Freaks sound almost like a hybrid of Woods and Real Estate at points, with some of the former band’s lo-fi style blending with Real Estate’s easygoing sound. That’s no more in evidence than on “Home I Love”, which made for one of this show’s most compact bursts of good feeling. That led into a superjam of sorts, with three more numbers from the album, with “See You On Sunday” jamming into “Steve’s Theme” and then “Rhythm Shakers” before the band switched gears into Katrina and the Waves’ all-time classic “Walking On Sunshine”. After “Step Right Up (Pour Yourself Some Wine)”, Bleeker toasted his birthday in grand style with their song “Epilogue” teasing Dylan’s “You Ain’t Goin’ Nowhere” into the set closer, Brewer & Shipley’s “One Toke Over the Line”. A happy birthday, indeed.

As Woods played in front of a fantasia of psychedelic swirls provided by Drippy Eye Projections, I thought back to another of many memorable Woods shows I’ve been to, where they played Abrons Arts Center with the Joshua Light Show, which these projections most resembled. Or there was the time they played St. Cecilia’s Church during the 2011 Northside Festival. Or the first couple times I saw them, in both cases opening for bands they are much bigger than now and whose careers they have outlasted, and thought, wow, these guys are really different. And they’re great. 

Like all bands with staying power, Woods have continued to evolve without abandoning the core elements of their sound — Jeremy Earl’s nasal, high pitched voice, the ramshackle folk, the not-quite-retro psychedelia. What has evolved into a very different beast is the band’s now-huge guitar sound, which barely resembles their earlier records and has turned them into a sonic juggernaut live. When the one minute, fifty four second song “I Was Gone” becomes a fourteen-minute behemoth of a jam now, the reaction isn’t being surprised or impressed that they’re trying it — it’s paying attention to what will be good about this version of the song. A Woods set, which rarely runs far past an hour, has become like a controlled dose of Grateful Dead. Every minute is worth watching, and the “jam songs” are ones you feel compelled to debate the best one of, date by date.

This set at Bowery Ballroom, which closed out their latest U.S. tour after a well-received Pitchfork Festival appearance the previous weekend, recalled several elements of the November show at Music Hall that we attended, but with a couple of exciting new offerings. Not only did the band play the new song “Shining”, which we assume will appear on their next record or in recorded format at some point, but they were also joined by Alex Bleeker of opening act Alex Bleeker and the Freaks for a special rendition of Creedence Clearwater Revival’s ever-popular “Have You Ever Seen the Rain”. Woods will be spending August in Europe and September on the West Coast. If you’re in either of those places, don’t miss seeing them. Tour dates can be found [HERE].

Woods: November 3, 2012 Music Hall of Williamsburg – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

After a week without power, internet, regular food, and just about any semblance of normal life, it was extraordinarily comforting on Saturday to get back to something familiar — a show. This wasn’t just any event though, but prolific nyctaper-recordees Woods at Music Hall of Williamsburg. It also helped that the support bands included two other NYCTaper favorites, Widowspeak and Purling Hiss. We’ve recorded Woods for five years, and there are more than a dozen recordings on this site. Its a testament to the band that we keep coming back and find new things to enjoy about their music. In May at 285 Kent, we noted that longtime drummer Jarvis Taveniere had come out from behind the kit and played most of the set on guitar. As we learned speaking to Jarvis before the show, that change is now permanent. With a new drummer, Woods is now also apparently a quartet as original member tape-loop/effects player G. Lucas Crane was absent from this gig. But it was the addition of Jarvis’s guitar work, which included several different axes including a neat 12-string, that ignited the guitar interplay within the band. The main focus of the set was precise back and forth between Jarvis, Jeremy and bassist Kevin Morby, who anchored center stage. The show began with a segue of three folk numbers before the band got a chance to stretch out and jam a little with new album title track and longtime jam vehicle “Bend Beyond”. The guitar trio seemed to be having fun on stage and their enjoyable interplay culminated in the highlight of the night an intense 15-minute “I Was Gone” that we are also streaming below. Its these types of performance that will keep us coming back, as this band continues to evolve into one of the best live acts around.

Acidjack and I recorded this set from the center and back of the soundboard booth mixing the Sennheisers with an excellent feed. The result is a superb capture. Enjoy!

Woods: May 5, 2012 285 Kent – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

Woods is one of those special bands with whom we like to feel as if we’ve traveled a long way. I first saw the band back in 2008 at Monster Island basement, and we’ve featured them on the site nine previous times over the last five years. The band has evolved in both songwriting and personnel, but the focus remains the same — strong folk-rock melodies with a heavy dose of experimentation. Woods has a new drummer, which means that Jarvis who played most of the drums in previous versions of the band is now out front all show playing guitar. At 285 Kent on Saturday night, Woods was part of one of the stronger bills we’ve seen all year with MMoss and Crystal Stilts. As the middle band, their set was shorter than we had hoped but on the last night of a two-week tour, Woods was energetic and tight. With Jarvis adding extra guitar, the jam elements of each song were also fleshed out. “Bend Beyond” filled the middle of the set and stretched to almost fourteen minutes. The set also included two brand new songs, and a nice variety of material. We are streaming “Blood Dries Darker”, the strong set closer. Woods will be off the road for while, but the annual Woodsist Festival returns to Big Sur California in August.

I recorded this set with the Sennheiser 8040s mounted on a pole 15 feet from the stage and mixed with a board feed. The sound quality is superb. Enjoy!

White Fence: August 13, 2011 Bowery Ballroom – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

One of the real joys of seeing live shows is seeing an opening band that just blows you away. That was the case with this opening set from White Fence on a stacked Bowery Ballroom bill led by NYCTaper favorites Woods. White Fence’s records are the solo effort Tim Presley, who also does time in the Strange Boys and Darker My Love, so for this show his backing band consisted of Nick Murray on Drums, and two members of Woods (Jarvis and Kevin), who handled Presley’s material as capably as if it were their own. Presley brings a Dylanesque vocal turn to his garage-psych songs, but the laid-back vibe of the songs doesn’t mean the playing isn’t also top notch, particularly Presley’s guitar work. The band’s entire set brought the rapidly-packing room to peak energy level, climaxing with jammed-out version of “Sticky Fruitman Has Faith” that was worthy of the night’s headliner in its ambitious scope. Whatever Presley’s other commitments musically, I hope he makes this project a priority, as White Fence is a can’t-miss band on any bill they’re on.

Woods: August 13, 2011 Bowery Ballroom – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Full Set

We caught Woods this summer in the unlikely Northside Festival venue of St. Cecilia’s Roman Catholic Church (that recording here), but it was an equally special treat to see them play the best-sounding venue in Manhattan, Bowery Ballroom. Although the set hewed fairly closely to what we saw back in June, no two Woods shows are alike, and indeed, the jam-heavy favorites “Bend Beyond” and “I Was Gone” took different directions than they did back at St. Cecilia’s. We also got a huge treat in the form of the band’s cover of the Graham Nash tune “Military Madness” as their final song. As at St. Cecilia’s, the band added an organ player to give them a bigger, more psychedelic sound, and the Bowery’s sound system was mixed to perfection.

Befitting the high quality sound in the room, we came out with a lot of high quality gear to record this show, including a soundboard feed and two sets of mics. The result is undoubtedly our best recording of Woods to date. Enjoy!

The Babies: June 18, 2011 McCarren Park (Northside Festival) – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

Having just caught their set at Knitting Factory a few weeks prior, I felt more up to speed with what The Babies were up when they kicked off the proceedings at the Northside Festival’s outdoor stage in McCarren Park.  I actually preferred this set to the Knitting Factory set, partly because the daytime outdoor setting was the perfect way to experience Cassie Ramone and Kevin Morby’s laid-back garage rock.  It didn’t hurt any that the outdoor PA mix was surprisingly strong, making for a recording that captures the artists’ vocal interplay perfectly.  One easy test of a band’s staying power is how well they hold up to repeated listens – especially live shows – in a short period of time.  Already, songs like “Breakin’ the Law”, “Sick Kid” and “Here Comes Trouble” feel like fantastic summer jams for this season and beyond.

I recorded this set with AKG large-diaphragm microphones on “omnidirectional” setting and split wide, plus an excellent soundboard feed.  The recording is excellent.  Enjoy!

Woods: June 17, 2011 Northside Festival, St. Cecilia’s RCC – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

Having already seen Woods perform in front of the Joshua Light Show last year at Abrons Arts Center (possibly the best show I saw that year), I wasn’t sure Woods could top the unique setting or outstanding performance. But then they announced that their Northside Festival performance would be held at St. Cecilia’s Roman Catholic Church, an impressive old-style cathedral nestled on a quiet block of East Williamsburg, and I knew they would have the opportunity to do both. Set against an imposing backdrop of religious icons and an American flag, Woods played a majestic set that, yes, could probably be called a religious experience. Although the band was celebrating the release of their well-received new record, Sun and Shade, rather than playing through the new record, they took the journey in a different direction reminiscent of the Abrons Arts Center show. All the qualities that led me to call them the “preeminent indie rock jam band” after that show were on full display on this night, as they wove deep psychedelic experimentation throughout some of their best-known songs. Combined with the cavernous room, the effect was magical, spiritual and satisfying. The set kicked off with “Pushing Onlys” from the new record, followed by a string of favorites – “Blood Dries Darker”, a typically extended “Bend Beyond” and “Rain On,” before taking a mellow interlude with “Be All Be Easy” and “Say Goodbye” from Sun and Shade. Things picked up after that with a mix of old and new material, with the set climaxing with a trippy, mind-blowing twelve-minute version of “I Was Gone” that rivaled the incredible “Bend Beyond” from the Abrons show. The band also played a new song, “Mind Them Empty,” which will be out next month on a 7″ on Sacred Bones Records. This is why Woods shows are always exciting experiences, and why I continue to believe they could very well be Brooklyn’s best live band right now. The band will hosting the upcoming Woodsist Festival in Big Sur, which will feature some natural beauty that Northside perhaps lacks. But for man-made incredible shows in equally grand surroundings, this show at St. Cecilia’s will be a very, very difficult one to top.

I recorded this set with a well-mixed soundboard feed from the house engineer Chris (who like many of the hardworking engineers at Northside, seemed to be inundated with late-breaking requests for board feeds), combined with Schoeps supercardiod microphones that picked up the natural sound of the room. The results are excellent. Enjoy!

The Babies: May 27, 2011 Knitting Factory – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

When we first saw The Babies at the beginning of last year (that recording here), they were a brand-new band mostly known as a side project of Cassie Ramone of the Vivian Girls and Kevin Morby of Woods. They rocked the hell out of Glasslands that night and left us wanting more – especially a new record. More than a year later, they gave us what we had hoped for in the form of a delightfully just-polished-enough eponymous debut album on the Shrimper imprint. This Knitting Factory show, opening for Times New Viking, found them working through many of the album tracks as well as some new and unfamiliar numbers. While the band’s sound owes more to Ramone’s Vivians than to Woods, the Babies have developed a solid identity of their own, marrying some of the surf vibe of the Vivians with a slightly harder-edged sound. We expect many more good things from the Babies – but in the meantime, just don’t call them a “Brooklyn Supergroup”.

I recorded this set from the same location as the Times New Viking recording, with the AKG large diaphragm mics set to a tighter pattern to reject more reflections from the room, as well as a soundboard feed. This one is probably the best recording of the night. Enjoy!

The Babies will be playing the Northside Festival this Saturday at McCarren Park with Guided By Voices.
