Deer Tick: October 30, 2015 Tommy Brull Benefit – Rockville Centre NY

One of the more inspiring aspects of the Tommy Brull Foundation is that the organization is very much about celebrating a life by helping others. I have been fortunate to get the know the guys over the last five years of attending these shows, and although the sadness of the loss of Tommy still exists sixteen years since his death, the best tribute that his family and friends can do for him is to continue to celebrate his love of music and his sense of community. For this most recent night of music, the Foundation brought back for the third time a band that seems to fit this vision perfectly. Deer Tick played the first ever “Shine A Light” music event in 2011, and returned a couple of years later. The connection seems real — Deer Tick are also genuinely righteous guys who also undoubtedly love to have a good time. So the fact that this year’s event fell on Halloween Eve kicked up the “good time” element of the event a bit more. Deer Tick came dressed as Blue Man Group and played a raucous set that also included two thematically appropriate covers — Warren Zevon’s “I’ll Sleep When I’m Dead” and Steve Miller’s “Abracadabra”. The balance of the setlist included a virtual career retrospective and even a brand new song, but it was the positive atmosphere, the band’s recognition of the importance of the event and the spirit of community that made this night so compelling. As a celebration of Tommy’s life, it couldn’t really have been any better.

I recorded this set with the Sennheiser cards mounted at the front of the stage and mixed it with a soundboard feed. There are points where the vocals in the PA drop out, so you’ll hear a lower vocal volume that comes from the on-stage monitors, but when everything’s on board, the sound is excellent. Enjoy!

Please donate to the Brull Foundation if you download this recording. The Foundation provides funding and spearheads worthy projects for disabled children on Long Island, particularly Camp Anchor where Tommy worked.

YVETTE: October 29, 2015 Trans Pecos

My first experience with YVETTE live was a night a few years ago at Death By Audio (RIP) when the band came off the stage and played their show inside of the crowd. The set-up made recording the performance impossible, but the sheer intensity and volume of that performance by YVETTE was astounding and I’ve been following them ever since. Acidjack caught their set at Hopscotch a little over a year ago, and his observations were consistent with mine. In the interim, YVETTE has followed up their superb 2013 debut album Process with a single (“I Don’t Need Anything From Anybody”) that appeared on a Godmode compilation (American Music – GM062) and then released an EP in October called Time Management which is available on cassette and through digital download. This set from a late Thursday night at Trans Pecos draws from all three releases, and continues to astound us in the sheer largeness of it all. You would not believe if you didn’t already know, but the depth of sound coming from the stage derives from a duet with Noah Kardos-Fein on guitar with various electronic enhancements and analog pedals and Dale Eisinger on drums and percussion. The overall effect is compelling and we will undoubtedly continue to follow this outstanding band.

I recorded this set with the Sennheiser cards mounted in the front of the stage and mixed with a board feed to fortify the vocals. The sound quality is quite excellent. Enjoy!

Destruction Unit: October 17, 2015 Ad Hoc Car Wash

Destruction-Unit-10

I’m pretty sure I can say that Destruction Unit has the best band name of anyone I saw this year. It’s not only catchy in its own right, but describes perfectly the maelstrom of noise that this postmodern Arizona punk band will rain down on you until you either risk your skull in the mosh pit or haul your ass to the exits. Destruction Unit is the kind of experience that’s polarizing, intimidating, and absolutely perfect to close out a show like Ad Hoc’s epic post-CMJ show in a Williamsburg car wash. By the time the band took the stage to close out the evening, the humble PA system was positively shredded, the house team fighting to keep the sound going. The band took things well past the limit, with a long lead-in to the pummeling track “Destruct.” This set stuck entirely to the band’s latest record, Negative Feedback Resistor, their second for Sacred Bones Records, though many of the songs found themselves extended for a few measures. The band was rightly hailed by Newsweek as the best band they saw at CMJ, and it’s hard to argue with that after seeing their live show. Even with the vocals buried under the beating being taken by the PA (you can hear them much better on this recording than you could in the room), it didn’t matter to the crowd, which erupted into a mosh pit early and didn’t let up for the entire, pummeling 35 minutes of this set. If you’re going to make a trip out east to slog your way through a bunch of CMJ shows, you ought to make it count. No question that Destruction Unit did that and more.

I recorded this set in the same manner as the day’s other recordings, with AT 4051 microphones and a soundboard feed. The sound quality is reflective of the setting and the style, and represents it quite well. Enjoy!

Dirty Ghosts: October 15, 2015 NYCTaper CMJ Party at Cake Shop

Dirty Ghosts Cereal and Sounds

The San Francisco band Dirty Ghosts has existed in one form or another for the last ten years, but its real beginnings date back into the last century and band leader Allyson Baker’s parents’ house in Toronto. Baker was a young punk rocker (and big Dwarves fan) who invited touring bands to stay at the house, leading to some great stories and ultimately an introduction into the music world. Fast forward to last decade and Baker’s move to SF and the Dirty Ghosts beginnings as her solo project produced by then-husband Aesop Rock. In the intervening years, the band has evolved from a duet to a full-fledged band featuring guitar wizard Erin McDermott on bass. In September, Dirty Ghosts have released their second full-length album Let It Pretend and this Fall is perhaps the most active time period in the band’s history. We were fortunate that the band was available for CMJ and we slotted them into our show in the late afternoon when the room was overflowing. Dirty Ghosts responded with a superb set that included music from their 2015 EP Cataract, one song from their debut album 2012’s Metal Moon, and the balance from the new record. After CMJ the band remains busy with their hometown official CD release show in SF on November, to be followed by a full Europe tour in November and December with Kelley Stoltz.

Acidjack recorded this set in the same manner as the other bands from this show and the sound quality is superb. Enjoy!

One of the nicer things about this superb Luna reunion tour has been the band’s acknowledgement of their own history. In Atlanta, Luna performed the entire Penthouse record from start to finish (recording here), and earlier in the week of New York shows, the Bowery Ballroom night was a chance to acknowledge the location of their final pre-reunion show in 2005 and the excellent documentary Tell Me Do You Miss Me of that tour (recording here).

In Brooklyn, the band welcomed back the original drummer Stanley Demeski, the legendary percussionist from the Feelies who was the behind the kit for the first three Luna albums, including the aforementioned Penthouse. At this special night in Brooklyn, Demeski added a nice extra set of skins to three songs for which he played on the original recordings, including a particularly memorable “23 Minutes in Brussels”. The guest appearance was the highlight of one of the best played shows of the tour and what is also one of the longer sets of the reunion shows.

Kubacheck recorded this show from a stand at the right nook in front of the soundboard booth with his excellent MBHO cards, and the sound quality is outstanding. Enjoy!

Dirty Dishes: October 15, 2015 NYCTaper CMJ Party at Cake Shop

Dirty Dishes Cereal and Sounds

The story of how the band Dirty Dishes came into being reads like something out of a Judd Apatow movie. The guy who vomits on the girl’s shoes at a party later calls to apologize and buy her new shoes, and eventually the two decide to start a band. The nagging question is why anyone would want to start a band with a shoe-puker — but after about thirty seconds of seeing Alex Molini play bass guitar the answer is obvious. The dude can flat out play. While Jenny Tuite’s lead vocals and melodic guitar lines are the centerpiece of the band, its the Molini bass presence that sets Dirty Dishes apart and are a large part of the reason why we invited them to our play our CMJ Day Party this year. The band had other gigs later in the evening so they needed to start early, which gave us the opportunity to see the band up close unfettered by the massive crowds that filled the Cake Shop basement later in the day. The Dirty Dishes set drew primarily from their 2015 release Guilty (Exploding in Sound Records) with two apparently new songs. It was the interplay between the band’s guitarists that impressed throughout and proves that no matter how you meet, its always a good thing to find your musical mate.

Dirty Dishes’ Fall Tour continues throughout November as the band travels through the East coast, Canada and the Midwest — all dates here. This tour includes a return to NYC for a show at Silent Barn on November 22.

Acidjack recorded this set in the same manner as the WOMPS set posted last week — Schoeps mounted on stage and mixed with a board feed. The sound quality is superb. Enjoy!

Mothers: October 15, 2015 NYCTaper Unofficial CMJ Show, Cake Shop

October 26, 2015

mothers2

The “taping” community is not a large one, and among people who have similar tastes to us that do it, the number is even smaller. We’ve long-respected the Athens/Atlanta site Southern Shelter for both its excellent taste in music and its high-quality recordings, and we look to each other for inspiration for the next bands to check out. The Athens band Mothers is one that Southern Shelter has talked up for a while, making us extra-stoked to be able to include them in our unofficial CMJ day show. Other sites caught on in the meantime, with Stereogum naming them a “band to watch” just a day before our show.

The Cake Shop room was at capacity for this set, and it’s no wonder why: Mothers, whose debut LP is anticipated in 2016, truly are an up-and-comer you can’t miss. Frontwoman and songwriter Kristine Leschper’s songs have a depth, breadth and ingenuity that sets them apart. In addition to her powerful voice, the songs feature complex arrangements that at times recall math and noise rock — a part of Leschper’s evolution as a songwriter as the band’s debut has come closer to fruition. This band, like many these days, began as Leschper’s solo project, but its expansion makes it more than the sum of those parts. She’s got an excellent team around her, and during the four-song span of our show, they gave us a taste of their range. “It Hurts Until It Doesn’t” is emblematic of Mothers’ evolution as a full band, whereas “No Crying In Baseball,” one of few songs actually released and this set’s closer, is considered an outlier to the rest of the band’s style. We hear the influence of some classic Athens bands in their sound, including the New Wavers Pylon (who we’ve recorded twice) and Warehouse (who we caught this year). It’s easy to see why they’ve caught on, making several “best of CMJ” lists this year, as this is one of those lucky few acts that lives up to the hype.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK4V microphones in front of the stage together with a soundboard feed from the Cake Shop engineer Jeff. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Zs: September 8, 2015 Bowery Ballroom

Our recent post of the great Greg Fox’s Hopscotch Festival duo set with Jefre Cantu-Ledesma reminded me that we had this Zs performance from September at Bowery Ballroom in the archives. The chance to go back and produce the recording gave me a second listen to what was at the time an excellent set but in retrospect is really one of the most astonishing shows we’ve seen all year. Zs opened this night for Thee Oh Sees (posted here), an odd pairing at first glance but one that gave band leader John Dwyer a chance to reunite with Zs founder Sam Hillmer after years playing in parallel music scenes. Sam founded Zs fifteen years ago, and while the band has been a fixture in the DIY scene since 2000, the personnel has morphed over the years. The current trio of Sam, Greg and guitar wizard Patrick Higgins has coalesced into a unique mix of noise, jazz, and avant to form a truly superb musical conglomeration. The band’s latest album Xe was released on the excellent local label Northern Spy in January to very strong reviews.

This performance at Bowery lasted less than an hour but kept the crowd transfixed for the entire set. For a 500-strong who came expecting some raging gararge rock, the powerful avant trio must have been a bit of a culture shock, but most picked up on the vibe pretty quickly. Zs worked through the new album in order, skipping only the opening track. The centerpiece of the set was the nearly nineteen-minute “Corps”, which gave each band member a chance to take center stage and showcase their immense talents.

Zs will be playing another local show at Palisades on November 20.

Protomartyr: October 17, 2015 Ad Hoc Car Wash

October 23, 2015

Protomartyr-11-edwina-hay
[photos courtesy of Edwina Hay as featured in Impose Magazine]

This was the week of the overwhelming, PR-driven quasi-festival known as the CMJ Music Marathon, meaning there were hordes of tired concertgoers and touring bands around by the time the week wrapped. Taking advantage of that, and perhaps bringing the vibes of our own scene back to earth were the already-legendary concert promoters/magazine Ad Hoc, who rented out a vacant car wash (and its adjoining parking lot) to put on a sprawling ten-band bill that boasted the best of local and touring acts. This event felt like an appropriate evolution for the neighborhood that once housed the best-known DIY venues of the prior decade: Here you had an unused commercial space converted to creative purposes, albeit this time with plenty of bathrooms, quality (and cheap and cold) beer by the can, and even a couple of food trucks.

If you went to a CMJ event this year, chances are you might have caught Protomartyr, who were all over the place at this year’s fest making the case for their recently-released third record The Agent Intellect. The Detroit band saw some heat from their last album, Under Color of Official Right, but consensus seems to be that it’s this new offering that is going to break them into wider consciousness. That’d be a more than fair outcome, as this thirty-minute, ten-song set showed off the best of their material, including “Scum, Rise!” from their previous record and a decent chunk of the new album. Frontman Joe Casey doesn’t exactly match the band’s sound or words, performing as he does in a weirdly-dapper dark blazer and sunglasses, but beneath that veneer boil bleak, personal tales set against the backdrop of the band’s hometown, such as the signature track “Pontiac ’87”. Though you could see the daylight streaming through behind the band (filtered only by the yellow car wash sign), they held the atmosphere where it needed to be, trapping the nervous energy within the stripped brick walls. Compared to some of their harder-edged peers who would share the stage throughout the day, Protomartyr were a bit more “musical” band than some of the other fare, and that’s part of what makes them special. If this CMJ was “their year,” then I say they’ve earned it.

I recorded this set with Audio Technica 4051 microphones and a soundboard feed from Ad Hoc’s staff. The sound quality reflects the “DIY” nature of the venue, but is still quite good. Enjoy!

After a couple of successful mini-tours overseas (plus one Summer NYC show), it was time for Luna to tour the East coast in their highly successful reunion. The first show of this tour became one of the most memorable because the band chose this night to perform the complete album Penthouse start to finish. This release came at the pinnacle of Luna’s 1990s success, and it is perhaps their most consistently excellent album. Its certainly one of my personal favorites. Penthouse material has been prominent throughout the 2015 shows, so the performance of the complete record only added three songs that had not previously been played, and a couple that only made sparse setlist appearances. But it was all very tight, well played, and the band’s between-song banter continues to draw smiles. After the completion of Penthouse, Luna came out for a mini-set and an encore that stretched this concert longer than any previous in 2015.

Luna’s current tour continues with seven more shows out West (dates here), including another performance of the Penthouse album at the Teragram Ballroom in LA presented by our friends over at Aquarium Drunkard.

Kubacheck recorded this set from the front and center balcony of this venue — an excellent location sound-wise for capturing the show. Unfortunately, the crowd is boisterous and a bit chatty, but overall its an excellent recording. Enjoy!
