NYCTaper Top Ten Concerts of 2008

December 18, 2008

Its getting late, less than 2 weeks left in the year. So we feel like we left our yearly Top Concerts post until as late as we can, with all due respect to the rest of the shows we will see this year — Matisyahu (Dec 22) and Yo La Tengo (Dec 23 and Dec 27 — they won last year) and possibly others.

NYCTaper saw something like 100 concerts this year, and recorded upwards of 150 different sets. This list represents our totally subjective ten favorite show for a variety of reasons.

NYCTaper Top Ten Concerts of 2008:

1. Sigur Ros: June 16, 2008 Grand Ballroom
This two-hour set of majestic brilliance was the clear winner of the best concert of 2008 — and perhaps the greatest show we have ever seen.

2. Of Montreal: October 10, 2008 Roseland
This show is almost legend by now — almost more an artistic theatrical event than simply a concert. The horse, the noose, the stage antics all ultimately paled to the two hours of intense music.

3. Deerhunter: November 7, 2008 Music Hall
A band at its creative peak performed a flawless set primarily consisting of its new CD — perhaps the best album released in all of 2008.

4. Love Is All: June 12, 2008 Cake Shop (NYC Popfest)
A packed sweaty room literally swaying with uncontrollable joy as the Swedish punk-pop masters perform in the most intimate venue they will ever play in NYC.

5. Wilco: August 13, 2008 McCarren Pool
Perhaps the strongest Wilco show we have ever seen, the eleven encores at this show exceed in number and length the entire sets they are performing opening for Neil Young this month.

6. [deleted]

7. Sharon Van Etten: October 23, 2008 Cake Shop (NYCTaper CMJ Show)
Admittedly, a personal and sentimental favorite. Sharon delivered a breathtakingly beautiful set as the ultimate finish to an outstanding day of music and musical camaraderie.

8. The Mountain Goats: November 9, 2008 Webster Hall
At the tour-closing night, John Darnielle pulled out all the stops. As he revealed early in the night that he had considered retiring from touring and that the current tour rejuvenated his love for live performance, this show took on a celebratory air.

9. Ponytail: June 21, 2008 After the Jump Fest (Music Hall)
This thoroughly original set literally took my breath away with its unrestrained energy and musicianship. It was the final performance of the day session of the outstanding After The Jump Fest — an amazing day of music.

10. Natalie Merchant: January 8, 2008 Hiro Ballroom
A triumphant return to performance. Natalie sang and performed beautifully for nearly two and half hours. This is ironically the only recording ever removed from the site at an artist’s request.

New Orleans to New York: Hurray For The Riff Raff in NYC for 4 Shows This Week

December 4, 2008
By

Hurray For The Riff Raff is an outstanding band from New Orleans well versed in the ways of Americana and Appalachian folk music. Their CD It Don’t Mean I Don’t Love You is on constant rotation here at NYCTaper, as we are aficionados of this genre when its done correctly (i.e. Wilco, The Loom). Hurray For The Riff Raff is centered around the rich melodic vocals of Alynda Lee and a series of classic folk instruments played with understated proficiency.

Originally booked for Monday, December 8 at Pianos, Hurray For The Riff Raff now has a series of four gigs scheduled this week, beginning with a loft gig tonight.

Dec 4 2008 1087 Loft NYC
Dec 5 2008 Pete’s Candy Store Brooklyn
Dec 6 2008 Silent Barn Brooklyn
Dec 8 2008 Pianos NYC (with Sharon Van Etten)

The Pianos gig on Monday night is a free show, and nyctaper will be there to capture a recording.

Bar/None CD Release Show at Mercury August 19 – Hotel Lights, Shannon McArdle, Starling Electric

August 16, 2008
By

Now this is a really excellent triple bill that we’re excited about. We received an invitation from Bar/None founder-president Glenn Morrow to attend this gig at Mercury Lounge on Tuesday August 19.

Hotel Lights is Darren Jessie’s band, who was the drummer of the Ben Folds Five. Darren’s underrated vocal chops and songwriting talents are in the forefront in Hotel Lights, and Tuesday’s show marks the release of his second album Firecracker People.

As I was setting up my equipment at Wednesday’s Wilco show, by complete coincidence Darren came up and stood with the group of people in front of me. I immediately recognized him and struck up a conversation about this show and my invitation from Bar/None to capture it. Darren was really upbeat about the new CD and his plans to play more shows after the Mercury show and his in-store show at Vintage Vinyl on August 20. There was a point from 1997 to 1999, when Wilco and Ben Folds Five were my favorite bands and it was a nice kind of surreal to be standing with one of “The Five” while watching Wilco perform a decade later.

Firecracker People – MP3 [download]

Shannon McArdle spent nearly a decade with the Mendoza Line, and when her marriage to fellow Mendoza Line member Timothy Bracy broke up, so did the band. After a year of writing and recording Shannon will release Summer of the Whore next week. The Village Voice did a nice write-up of Shannon and the new CD [here].

The opening band on this bill is Starling Electric, a psychedelic pop band from Michigan whose self-released CD caught the attention of Robert Pollard (Guided by Voices) and for whom they opened a series of shows. Bar/None signed them this year, and will release Clouded Staircase next week.

The Mercury Lounge showcase is an early show that begins at 6:30pm.

nyctaper archives – Richard Thompson – The Fleadh June 15, 1997 – Flac Download

December 19, 2007
By

The 1997 and 1998 Fleadh Festivals on Randall’s Island were the greatest live musical experiences of my life. I volunteered to work on the crew for Pierce Turner, and as a result was able to witness a plethora of great music from stage-side, including Patti Smith, Wilco (twice), Van Morrison, X, Shane McGowan, Suzanne Vega, Black ’47, John Prine, Steve Earle, Billy Bragg, Freedy Johnston, and a host of others.

I recorded several of the acts with a small set of core-sound microphones and a portable DAT. Of these recordings, this Richard Thompson is the best sounding and greatest performance. Thompson performed a solo acoustic set of numbers typical from this era, including his classics “Beeswing” and “1952 Vincent Black Lightning” with subtle power and poignancy.

This recording is no longer available at nyctaper. If you look around the web, you’ll likely find a copy.

Mike Watt October 16, 1998 Knitting Factory – Lossless Download

September 3, 2007
By

Mike Watt is one of my favorite people in the entire music industry. His “resume” is one of the most impressive in rock history–co-founder of the legendary Minutemen, co-founder of the excellent fIREHOSE, a laundry list of collaborations, and current bass player for the re-formed Stooges–and yet he remains an engaging and personable character.

Contemplating the Engine Room (1997) was Mike Watt’s second solo album. Watt formed the band the “Black Gang” and toured the album in 1998. The second leg of the tour featured über-guitarist Nels Cline, then a fairly obscure local LA performer who has now become the permanent lead guitarist for Wilco (read more Cline). The album is a broad allegory in part for Watt’s Minutemen experience, and was performed start-to-finish as the first set for the tour.

Watt also permits open taping, trading and archival of his concerts. Throughout many of the Engine Room tour dates, fans were permitted to plug into the soundboard as you’ll hear in the download offered below. After the Knitting Factory concert, Mike Watt sat on the edge of the stage, chatted with fans, and sold merch. After I bought the tour t-shirt, I told Watt about my experience of seeing the Minutemen at the Ritz in 1985. Watt’s eyes lit up, and I felt a certain kinship with this man, who has spent his entire post-Minutemen career making his late best friend D. Boon proud.
