Animal Collective: February 24, 2016 Irving Plaza

In the early years of the last decade when the speed of the web aligned with the availability of high quality audio files, I went on a binge downloading all of the available Animal Collective live recordings from their page at the Live Music Archive and from various torrent sites. In 2007 I was finally able to see the band live. For the shows I recorded at Webster Hall shows that year, I had expected the band to play the live songs for which I was quite familiar, but those two historic Webster shows were heavy on new songs — my introduction to the material that would eventually become the band’s brilliant breakthrough album Merriweather Post Pavilion. I’m not so sure I was prepared for what would come next. When Animal Collective released MPP to overwhelmingly positive reviews, I recorded the first two shows in New York and the attention we received literally crashed the site. I learned a lot about the potential for this site to reach a large audience but also the mixed bag nature of viral material, and NYCTaper was forever inextricably intertwined with the music of Animal Collective. To this day, the recording for Animal Collective at Manhattan Center has been downloaded over 50,000 times and remains the most circulated of all of our recordings.

In the intervening years, we’ve had intermittent opportunities to capture the band live including some memorable solo shows. There was the secret Glasslands show with Avey Tare and Deakin that introduced us to that amazing venue (RIP) and to the material that would eventually become Oddsac. Our recording of Panda Bear at Governor’s Island in 2010 was so successful that the artist actually released a limited version of the recording as a free bonus download with the album Tomboy. There was a pair of Deakin shows in 2010, a terrific solo show by Avey Tare at Knitting Factory in 2011, and then a full band show at Terminal 5 in 2012. But we’ve never quite captured the magic of the MPP shows and the rabid interest those 2009 recordings generated.

Its now more than decade since my first obsession with Animal Collective and fortunately 2016 finds us both in very good places. The band’s new album is called Painting With and its quite an excellent piece of work and undoubtedly their strongest material since Merriweather Post Pavilion. The tour in support of the album is being played in smaller venues than anything since the small MPP shows and the feel of this tour is similar. There’s an excitement surrounding the band, the album and the shows that harkens back to 2009 and its a great feeling to have back. At Irving Plaza on Wednesday night, Animal Collective played a virtually flawless ninety-minute show that featured most of the new album, one bizarro cover, and several deep cuts from some of the earliest releases. Indeed, the final song of the night “Alvin Row” goes all the way back to the band’s first album, Spirit They’re Gone, Spirit They’ve Vanished. The venue was absolutely packed — I was pushed up against the soundboard cage for the entire night — but the crowd was entirely involved in the show. There is literally no yapping at all recognizable on this recording. And the band played off the energy coming from the crowd as this performance was top notch from start to finish. Indeed, the band only took two song breaks as they segued most of the songs from the main set, and the three encore songs flow as one.

The current Animal Collective tour continues throughout the Spring, moving West and then spending much of April in Europe before the band returns to the US in May. There is a show on May 14 in Sayreville NJ that we are going to try to record, but our attendance is not yet confirmed.

I recorded this set with my old Neumann KM-150 hypercardioids (the same mics as Bowery in 2009) from a prime position directly in front of the soundboard on the floor. The sound in the venue was phenomenal and this recording is quite superb. Enjoy!

Tweedy: June 28, 2015 Solid Sound Festival (North Adams, MA) – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

Our recording of one of the earliest Tweedy performances, at last year’s Mountain Jam, caught fire on the Internet. Before that show, I wasn’t sure what to expect from the new father-son band. While that performance was good, it didn’t fully predict the quality of the now-released Sukierae album, which (in my view) compares favorably to some of Wilco’s more recent efforts. Now, just over a year on, Tweedy is a force of its own, as Jeff and Spencer Tweedy let us know forcefully when they played Wilco’s Solid Sound Festival. This sprawling two hour and fifteen minute set, replete with covers, Tweedy songs, Wilco songs, songs from other side projects (Loose Fur, most notably), and special guests, seems like a window into what Jeff Tweedy wants this band to be. If Wilco will always be the man’s flagship and true moneymaker, Tweedy is where he gets to have fun. Here we have the Tweedys joined by all manner of Solid Sound guests, from Nels Cline to Ryley Walker, Bill Frisell to Cibo Matto. Would Wilco cover a Madonna song? Probably not — but with Tweedy, it didn’t even feel out of place. The set’s final number, a rousing “California Stars,” featured just about everybody on stage, and though this took place on the East Coast, the moment captured the wistful romance of that song perfectly.

Our friend gr8fulpete recorded this set with Neumann KM185 hypercardiod microphones. Other than some gusts of wind noise that can’t be avoided, the sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Wilco: June 26, 2015 Solid Sound Festival – Flac/MP3/Streaming

The Friday night Wilco show of the band’s semi-annual Solid Sound Festival has become the thing of surprises. Two years ago, the Friday performance became the now-legendary all-covers show that blew up the internet overnight and is by far the most popular recording in the history of this site. For this year’s Fest, the opening night set featured an all-acoustic performance with the band playing it in an old school centered microphone bluegrass style. While this configuration is not entirely new to Wilco — the encore segments of the 20th Anniversary the Fall tour featured a similar setup — the performance of an entire two-plus hour show certainly was a novelty. Additionally, in the long-form set the various band members got a chance to stretch their instrumentation wings — we heard some mandolin, accordion, banjo, slide guitar and stand-up piano. The show’s setlist was not particularly rare, but that wasn’t the point. It was the band’s ability to provide interesting new arrangements to Wilco classics that makes this show a special event. And, in celebration of the recent win for fairness, Jeff Tweedy saluted marriage equality by declaring in the middle of “Hesitating Beauty” that it was “so much nicer singing this song now that everyone can get married”. We’re streaming that track below.

Wilco will be on the Festival circuit for the most part this Summer, dates here. We’ll catch them again at the Gathering of the Vibes in Connecticut in August.

Our friend Pete recorded this show from the area directly in front of the soundboard with the hypercardioid Neumanns. As with all of Wilco FOH Stan’s work, this was is another excellent mix and the sound quality (other than the boisterous crowd) is quite excellent. Enjoy!

Hurray For The Riff Raff: June 7, 2015 Mountain Jam – Flac’MP3/Streaming

We’ve chronicled the rise of Hurray For The Riff Raff quite often over the last few years — so often that their appearance at Mountain Jam isn’t even the first festival appearance we’ve captured. Last year at the XPontential Fest, HFTRR appeared on the biggest stage we had seen them play yet and slayed the huge crowd. The experience at the Jam this year was quite similar, except that the band was placed higher in the bill right before the headliner Alabama Shakes (recording here). Though it was a tough spot, as the crowd seemed to be gravitating to the main stage, HFTRR played a tight hour-long set at the west stage. Opening with a “mountain” song in tribute to the Fest, the band worked through a familiar set of songs with six songs from last year’s career-changing success Small Town Heroes, a couple of older songs, and one brand new one that we first heard at the Bowery back in April.

Hurray For The Riff Raff performed at Bonnaroo this weekend, and will continue to play at several Festivals and other selected dates throughout the Summer.

I recorded this set with Neumann large diaphragm cardiods from our section up on the hill. There was some wind during this set, but the overall quality is quite good. Enjoy!

Joe Russo’s Almost Dead: June 5, 2015 Mountain Jam – Flac/MP3/Streaming

At this point, it is apparent that Joe Russo’s Almost Dead has achieved its mission of providing a fresh approach to the task of covering Grateful Dead songs. And at a Festival that has thrived on ability to provide a reliable recreation of the classic rock genre, JRAD were an easy stand-in for the greatest improvisational rock band of its era. The Grateful Dead made a one stab at the massive task of performing the band’s ultimate rock opus “Terrapin Station” in its entirety, but the performance failed to capture the majesty of the suite that owns the entire second site of the Terrapin Station album. “Terrapin” is perhaps the Grateful Dead’s crowning achievement in musical composition, but the complexity of the last half of the suite was not a task that the band had the fortitude to undertake at a live show and so it was only the first two sections that were performed consistently since its 1977 debut.

JRAD opened their set at Mountain Jam in the pouring rain with a jam that seamlessly merged with “Lady With A Fan”, the opening section of the Terrapin suite. When the band concluded the first section of the main theme and proceeded to the “Terrapin Transit” portion, it was a moment to smile. JRAD consistently takes this music to places where the original band never trod, and this was just another example — and the fun had just begun. Lead by the stunning keyboard work of Marco Benevento, JRAD took each section of the suite and transformed them into complete songs of their own. It was a breathtaking thirty-two minutes and this is a recording I’ve already sampled thoroughly four times and undoubtedly will experience many more times. The balance of this set consisted of meaty and committed versions of three more songs but the take away from this short JRAD experience was undoubtedly the complete Terrapin suite.

I recorded this set with the Neumann large diaphragm cardioids in a very advantageous location up the hill in front of the soundboard area. Considering the elements at the time of this performance, overall this is an outstanding recording. Enjoy!

The Hum Residency: April 20, 2015 Manhattan Inn – Flac/MP3/Streaming

The third week of the Hypnocraft-presented Hum Residency at Manhattan Inn was my own personal first experience with this extraordinary mesh of talents and it was a terrific night. The first set was scheduled to be a duo with our old friend Alyse Lamb from EULA with Alex Nelson of Oracle Room but the group became a trio with the addition of Pamela Martinez (of Teletextile), a veteran of the first week of Hum, on percussion, keys and effects. Their set was a shared group of songs that neither protagonist has ever performed live before, and for Alyse the material was more aligned to her solo project Parlor Walls (who we recorded last year) than to the hard-driving post-punk of EULA.

The second set was performed by another old friend, Jen Goma of A Sunny Day in Glasgow, who has previously appeared on NYCTaper a couple of times. She was joined by Teeny Lieberson (TEEN) and Zoe Brecher (Brainfreeze) for a set that primarily was fueled by dual keyboards and drums until Jen strapped on the strat for the final number. Overall, this trio’s collaborative effort was reminiscent of the synth-driven pop of the aughts but with stunningly precise harmonies.

The final set of the night was a full-on party, which is what we’d expect from a quartet that includes Rubblebucket‘s Kalmia Traver, but which was a true collaboration that also featured Sarah Pedinotti (LIP TALK), Kaila Mullady (champion beat boxer) and Jordyn Blakely (Invisible Familiars). This set included songs written and arranged by all four participants and was a mix of funk and electronica with some amazing harmonies, and also featuring nice bits of baritone sax, beats and some sweet guitar licks. The final song had the whole crowd standing and grooving and ended this fine night in very entertaining fashion.

I recorded this show with the Neumann large diaphragm cardioid microphones on the floor in the center of the performers and mixed with a soundboard feed which provided primarily vocals. The mix of the two sources provided an excellent balance and the sound quality is superb for all three sets. Enjoy!

Phish: July 11, 2014 Randall’s Island – Flac/MP3/Streaming

I’ll be the first to admit that my street cred when it comes to Phish is pretty light. After all, its been almost fifteen years since I’ve actually even seen the band live. That night in the Fall of 1999 at Nassau Coliseum was a fairly famous Phish event, when lyricist Tom Marshall took the stage to sing a few covers with the band. I was also at a Madison Square Garden show during New Year’s week in 1998 when the band played a mini acoustic set in the middle of the show. But 90s memories aside, I do still have some very good friends with close connections to the band — close enough to give us the first-report exclusive of the Phish reunion way back in August of 2008, for which we took a lot of flak but which ultimately proved to be correct. So when it was announced that Phish would play three local GA shows at Randall’s Island I figured it was about time I got out and saw them again and brought to the site a recording that many of our readers have asked about over the years.

The trek to Randall’s started out a little rocky — a long line and long-ish wait for the Ferry. But once on the boat the day went about as smooth as could be expected. At the GA shows, there is no “tapers’ section” to speak of, so when I arrived as the second taper to reach the spot we pretty much set up where we landed — about 30 feet in front of the board and pretty close to the ideal spot. Phish fans take a lot of criticism but in reality people were extremely nice to us and also respectful of the rigs. We weren’t able to raise the mic pole as high as I would have liked because we were instructed not to block the band’s cameras, but even with a “low” pole, there is surprisingly little chatter on this recording.

My knowledge of Phish is not sufficient for me to say whether this was a “great” show but I’m pretty sure it was a very good one. Perhaps motivated by the release of their new album Fuego, by all accounts of the current tour the band is playing very well right now. And while Friday’s show did feature songs from the new album (we are streaming the excellent performance of “Fuego”), the show itself didn’t dwell on the new material with only three played. Overall the band played a nice selection of songs highlighted by first set standouts “Bathtub Gin” (also streaming) and “Stash”, and second set stalwarts “Down With Disease” and “David Bowie” and a rare-ish cover of local band TV on the Radio (“Golden Age”). I can’t say this show will make me drop everything and follow Phish on tour, but I certainly won’t wait another 15 years to see them again.

I recorded this show with the large diaphragm Neumann mics from the front of board spot referenced above. These mics perform well outdoors and this show was no exception. There are two bumps from balloons, but with the excellent location, good crowd and no weather-related issues, this recording came out superbly. Enjoy!

Thee Oh Sees: June 14, 2014 McCarren Park (Northside Fest) – Flac/MP3/Streaming

Here at NYCTaper we’ve been big fans of the Northside Festival, and L Magazine and indeed the Stedmans for quite a while. And we hope the feelings are mutual — we’ve hosted multiple Northside showcases over the years and have been the subject of several L Magazine profiles too. But the show that seems to have been the pinnacle for the Fest has also been one of our favorites and that’s the Saturday afternoon mega-show at McCarren Park. In previous years we captured the uber Guided By Voices event in 2011. But this year it was a whole other level — one of the best live bands in the world playing in the bright sunshine in front of a few thousand adoring fans. Thee Oh Sees return to NYC after a brief “hiatus” was met with quite a bit of enthusiasm — by the time the band began their set much of the huge McCarren yard was filled. Indeed, John Dwyer joked that the next night’s show at Death By Audio would have a capacity one-fourteenth the size of this day’s crowd. After an introduction by Daniel Stedman, the band ripped through more than an hour of their intense garage-rock before the show’s curfew called an end to the set. We’ve previously discussed Dwyer’s move of the band to a trio but on the big stage in a huge venue, the three oh sees had no problem filling up the sound. As John announced, they’ll return to NYC in November and we’ll certainly be there again.

I recorded this set with the Neumann wide cards set up in front of the soundboard tent about 80 feet from the stage and mixed with a fine stereo board feed. The problem on this day was the wind. It was blowing and bursting right into the face of the stage, so that there is phasing that’s present in the board feed through the mics on stage and also in the sound projected by the speakers. There is no wind noise problem in the mics because of was in front of the tent, and protected by both the mic grills and big windscreens. Other than the wind-phasing, this is an excellent recording. Nicole Atkins: June 18, 2014 Madison Square Park – Flac/MP3/Streaming

The last time we connected with Nicole Atkins her brilliant new album Slow Phaser had just been released and her tour was literally just beginning — it was the tour’s first show. That night at Bowery Ballroom there was a palpable excitement in the room and despite a huge winter storm the venue was quite filled. This album is a career-defining accomplishment and we were more than pleased when her new crack band brought the songs to life. Now with six months of shows behind them, we caught Nicole and her band earlier this month at Madison Square Park. This show was the first night of the Park’s concert series, run impeccably by the Madison Square Park Conservancy. On a beautiful summer-like night the crowd was a mix of fans, families on blankets, curious locals and park supporters but from the outset Nicole had their attention and kept it for the entire full-length show — even with the lively city noise behind us (including persistent police and ambulance sirens). There was been one change in the band which now contains one guitarist but has added a keyboardist who provided much color to the music. Nicole played much of Slow Phaser but also added a few older tracks. We’re streaming “Its Only Chemistry”, which ended the main set and contains a particularly strong vocal performance. In July, Nicole goes on a national tour in support of Nick Cave with two NYC dates, July 26 at Celebrate Brooklyn/Prospect Park and July 27 at Hammerstein Ballroom.

I recorded this show with the Neumann large diaphragm mics set up at the soundboard tent and mixed with a fine board feed. The Neumann LD’s are especially warm and wide in the outdoor setting and the mix is quite well balanced resulting in a superb recording. Enjoy!

Rocketship: June 1, 2014 Trans Pecos – Flac/MP3/Streaming

The sun was so bright in the yard of Trans Pecos for Rocketship’s afternoon show on Sunday that ToddP was passing around tubes of sunscreen to the crowd. It was that kind of day — friendly, fun and bright. The new outdoor area at Pecos was the perfect setting for Rocketship and Todd to do a throwback of sorts. Rocketship hasn’t toured since the 90s and not entirely coincidentally they also played the first show ever booked by ToddP in Austin in 1996. The band was in town for the NYC Popfest (they’re also playing the LA Popfest) but in the afternoon before their flight West they visited with old friends and old material in a setting that must have reminded them of their home in sunny California. Rocketship played everything from their first single (“Hey Hey Girl” streaming below) to several songs on the one full album they released on Slumberland Records, and indeed a couple of brand-new unreleased songs. Considering that the Rocketship catalog is a bit of a puzzle of singles, EPs, compilations, split-albums and long plays (excellent summary here), it was no small feat the band really quite democratically cherry-picked from seemingly all of their eras. But in the end, this show was all about the vibe — of which there were a ton of good ones. The band played forty-five minutes, but it easily could have been longer save for the plane the band had to catch. But for that near-hour, it was indeed a perfect day.

I recorded this set with the large diaphragm Neumann 102s set up at the front of the stage and mixed it with a fine board feed. The result is a superb recording of which we are very pleased. Enjoy!
