Widowspeak: November 3, 2012 Music Hall of Williamsburg – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

Among us, we have seen Brooklyn’s Widowspeak at least seven times in the past couple of years, including hosting them at last year’s NYCTaper CMJ Day Show. What we have seen each time is a band that keeps getting better and, most crucially, continuing to write great new songs. True to form, half of the songs played during this opening set for Woods at Music Hall of Williamsburg were new (relative to their LP), and they stood up well alongside some of the best numbers from their 2011 self-titled LP like “In the Pines”. Of the newer material, four of these songs will appear on the band’s second Captured Tracks LP, Almanac, which comes out on January 22.  I continue to be amazed at the depth added to the band’s sound by the addition of Pamela Garabano-Coolbaugh on bass, as it gives lead guitarist Robert Thomas and singer/guitarist Molly Hamilton more room to focus on their own guitar work. Sonically, Widowspeak is a moody, downbeat band, but they are clearly enjoying the ride; even if they don’t sound like it, they look like they’re having a lot of fun up there. With the band’s next NYC show scheduled for their record release date of January  22 at Mercury Lounge, we have plenty to look forward to from Widowspeak in 2013.

Purling Hiss: November 3, 2012 Music Hall of Williamsburg – Flac/MP3/Streaming

Its always an encouraging story when talent, hard work and persistence are rewarded. We have been big fans of Purling Hiss for a couple of years, and we have been convinced since we first saw them in early 2011 at Bowery Ballroom that Mike Polizze’s band was ultimately going to reach a large audience. Mike is an extraordinarily talented guitarist and the band’s ferocious performing style fits with the aggressive garage-punk songs. At Music Hall of Williamsburg last week, we learned before the show that Purling Hiss has signed to the excellent label Drag City Records. We expect a new album to appear in March. At Music Hall some of the newer songs were performed, and while the songcraft remains strong, there is definitely a more melodic tint to the material. Purling Hiss wasted no time in their thirty-five minute opening set and immediately got down to business, transitioning each song into the next. We’re streaming old favorite “Almost Washed My Hair” which was both the finale and the band’s chance to stretch out and shred.

Acidjack and I recorded this set with a combination of four room mics, his Schoeps hyper-cards and my Sennheiser cards and mixed with an excellent board feed. The sound is superb. Enjoy!

After a week without power, internet, regular food, and just about any semblance of normal life, it was extraordinarily comforting on Saturday to get back to something familiar — a show. This wasn’t just any event though, but prolific nyctaper-recordees Woods at Music Hall of Williamsburg. It also helped that the support bands included two other NYCTaper favorites, Widowspeak and Purling Hiss. We’ve recorded Woods for five years, and there are more than a dozen recordings on this site. Its a testament to the band that we keep coming back and find new things to enjoy about their music. In May at 285 Kent, we noted that longtime drummer Jarvis Taveniere had come out from behind the kit and played most of the set on guitar. As we learned speaking to Jarvis before the show, that change is now permanent. With a new drummer, Woods is now also apparently a quartet as original member tape-loop/effects player G. Lucas Crane was absent from this gig. But it was the addition of Jarvis’s guitar work, which included several different axes including a neat 12-string, that ignited the guitar interplay within the band. The main focus of the set was precise back and forth between Jarvis, Jeremy and bassist Kevin Morby, who anchored center stage. The show began with a segue of three folk numbers before the band got a chance to stretch out and jam a little with new album title track and longtime jam vehicle “Bend Beyond”. The guitar trio seemed to be having fun on stage and their enjoyable interplay culminated in the highlight of the night an intense 15-minute “I Was Gone” that we are also streaming below. Its these types of performance that will keep us coming back, as this band continues to evolve into one of the best live acts around.

Acidjack and I recorded this set from the center and back of the soundboard booth mixing the Sennheisers with an excellent feed. The result is a superb capture. Enjoy!

Crime & The City Solution: October 22, 2012 Music Hall of Williamsburg – Flac/MP3/Streaming

These twenty-year reunions can be mixed affairs. Some bands are content to simply play the “hits” (i.e. Pixies, Wedding Present), while others re-establish themselves as working bands performing both old and newer material (Dinosaur Jr., Mission of Burma). When Crime & The City Solution announced their first tour and album in more than twenty years, the hope would be that they would follow the latter course. Crime didn’t really have any “hits” to recycle anyway. At Music Hall last week, it was quite apparent from the outset that this was indeed a vital working band and while just three new songs were performed, the title track from the new album (American Twilight) was played in the final encore slot. The other obvious positive sign was that Crime was not just mailing it in — in fact it was quite the opposite. This performance was intense, tight, and inspired. Band founder and leader Simon Bonney anchored the centerstage with his dramatic and confident vocals while the twin guitars of Alex Hacke and David Eugene Edwards were both powerful and animated. The eight-piece band wasted precious little time with formalities but simply rocked hard from start to finish. I left the venue encouraged that sometimes second acts (or for Crime, third or fourth acts) can be just as compelling as the brand new. While their US tour is now complete, Crime & The City Solution will continue to tour in Europe for the balance of this month. We expect that they will return to NYC in the not too distant future, as American Twilight will be released on Mute Records in the Spring.

I recorded this set from the center of the balcony with the Sennheisers mounted on the railing at a lower level to line up with the stacks. While the sound in the venue was somewhat boomy, we EQ’d a little bass roll-off and boosted the highs. The clarity (and vocals) now supplement the rich bottom end for an excellent recording. Enjoy!

The Mountain Goats: October 13, 2012 Music Hall of Williamsburg – Flac/MP3/Streaming

Transcendental Youth is the fourteenth proper Mountain Goats album. Its another strong record that continues the themes that the Mountain Goats often explore, misfits and tragi-comedic characters. The new album also spurred a tour, and although John Darnielle played a show as part of the Ecstatic Music Fest in March, this was the band’s first proper visit to NYC in more than a year and half, and it resulted in four sold out shows. On Saturday night at Music Hall, the Mountain Goats performed eight songs from the new album within a set of both tMG standards and a few rare nuggets. John was particularly effusive and hilarious on this night with the between-song banter, and for this tour tMG were joined for part of the set with show-opener Matthew E. White’s horn section. The result was a long and thoroughly entertaining night of music, one of the best Mountain Goats shows we’ve seen.

I recorded this show from the center balcony rail with the Sennheisers mounted fairly low. The room was mixed to perfection by tMG sound engineer Brandon, and the result is one of our best recordings from the balcony spot in this venue. Enjoy!

Melvins “Lite”: October 4, 2012 Music Hall of Williamsburg – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

The “Lite” version of the Melvins (one drummer instead of two, no electric bass) is still a hell of a lot heavier than most bands on their best day, and this show at Music Hall of Williamsburg continued that trend. The band is on a quixotic mission to play 50 states in 51 days (possibly setting a world record), and this Brooklyn show found the band a little over halfway through their quest. If they were burned out from the relentless schedule, they didn’t show it; the band came out charging, in good spirits, and as ear-bustingly loud as ever. Even without their usual dual-drummer setup, one Dale Crover can provide a whole lot of percussion, and Buzz Osborne’s guitars and Trevor Dunn’s upright bass similarly held their own. Dunn’s rocking out with the upright bass was a special thrill, as he manhandled the big bass like a smaller electric, playing on his back, twirling it over his head, and doing just about everything but smash it to bits all over the stage.  This set included some crowd pleasers from the band’s best-known album, Houdini  (“Hooch”, “Set Me Straight” and “Sky Pup”), but as usual, dug deep into the back catalog, kicking off with “Eye Flys” from the band’s first album, Gluey Porch Treatments. One highlight at several stops on this tour has been the “Inner Ear Rupture” and “Shevil” combo, and that closed the night’s set in special style, with the song stretching to a full 12 minutes. The band has a ways to go before they get the record, and we’re pulling for them!

Johnny Fried Chicken Boy and I were in the balcony of the venue in our usual spot for this set.  We used two pairs of mics that made roughly equal recordings, so much so that there didn’t seem to be much point combining the two sources.  This is my Schoeps MK41 supercardiod microphones in tightly-spaced configuration to provide as much direct sound as possible. The results are comparable to the site’s other excellent Melvins recordings from Music Hall, which you can locate by clicking the “Melvins” tag below. Enjoy!

Olivia Tremor Control: June 16, 2012 Music Hall of Williamsburg [Northside Festival] – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

After catching an exclusive acoustic warmup set the day before, we could not wait for Olivia Tremor Control‘s main Northside Festival set at Music Hall of Williamsburg. After short sets by the newly revamped Dinosaur Feathers and Laura Stevenson & the Cans, OTC took the stage and immediately tore into “The Opera House”, one of their most rocking numbers. Despite being on one of the festival’s bigger stages, OTC made the show feel like our own private window onto a living room jam session. The members chatted easily among each other, helped each other tweak their gear and evidently were still debating the setlist at points. While that freewheeling style could be a frustration with some bands, that is the charm of Olivia Tremor Control, who have always taken the “collective” concept of music-making to its fullest extreme (see, for example, the Elephant 6 Holiday Surprise Show I recorded earlier this year). An always-quirky band with a penchant for multi-part songs, sound collages, strange instrumentation,and acid-trip lyrics, OTC have always kept things weird, though they also have a penchant for pure pop songwriting that most bands would envy. Close your eyes at certain points in this set, and you might have thought you were hearing the Rubber Soul-era Beatles playing unreleased b-sides.

This 75-minute set featured many gems from the Athens, GA band’s landmark 1996 debut LP, Music From The Unrealized Film Script “Dusk At Cubist Castle”, including two of my favorites, “Can You Come Down With Us” and “Memories of Jacqueline 1906”, both streaming below. Of course, the band didn’t ignore the 1999 record Black Foliage, or some of their non-album material, including “Shaving Spiders” from the Giant Day 7″ EP. Although they have been back together for a bit now, fans are still anxiously awaiting a full record of new material from OTC, with onlyThe Game You Play Is In Your Head Pts. 1, 2 and 3 EP from last year to dig into until then. If this set was any indication, this is a group of players with plenty of musical vitality left – let’s hope they keep the project going.

I recorded this set from the center of the venue balcony with Schoeps MK41 microphones and an Aerco custom preamp to create a warm, vintage sound. While we generally are huge fans of Bowery Presents and their fine venues, Music Hall has always been a challenge for us.  On this night, I was not permitted to use the equipment we have used for the past two years to hang mics safely and securely from the balcony, making the placement less-than-optimal. Further, the house mix on this night left much to be desired, with the bass levels seemingly left at the settings from the GZA show two nights before. The recording was cleaned up in post-production considerably, and now is a solid if not spectacular recording by this site’s standards. Listen to the samples, and enjoy!

Black Wine: February 11, 2012 Music Hall of Williamsburg – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

Going on first is never easy, so I was pleasantly surprised to see such a crowd out for Black Wine.  Opening the Don Giovanni Records showcase last month at Music Hall of Williamsburg, the band played their opening slot with massive enthusiasm that was rewarded with a rapidly growing crowd.  They also had a bit of an advantage.  With a sometimes-melodic punk sound (an oxymoron people used to rationalize with the word “emo”, which I’ll opt not to) that suggests echoes of the members’ most recent engagements in the New Brunswick, NJ scene – For Science, the Ergs and Hunchback – these musicians each have a fan base that stretches back into the 1990s.  Composed of the husband and wife team of guitarist Jeff Schroeck and drummer Miranda Taylor, together with Jason Nixon on bass, this team of veterans handles the vocal duties democratically onstage, with the focus shifting among players onstage as each takes a turn at the mic.  While this means their songs vary a bit more between each other than those of some bands, it also keeps things interesting, as a Taylor song will tend to have a very different feel to it than one from one of the men.  Their songs have a focused, professional feel that befits long-time musicians, perhaps most notably for me on their leadoff track “Through the Foam”, which was an immediate crowd-pleaser.  As bands like the Screaming Females and Gaslight Anthem continue to raise their profile in NYC, other New Brunswick bands like Black Wine are likely to see an increased profile for the north/central Jersey scene.  And they ought to – they’re making very good music there.

We recorded this set with Neumann KM150 microphones into a Sound Devices preamp to provide maximum clarity to the guitars and vocals.  The sound is excellent.  Enjoy!

Laura Stevenson & the Cans do not have much in common with their Don Giovanni Records labelmates stylistically – the label skews, with bands like The Screaming Females, a heck of a lot noisier.  But their performance this night at Music Hall of Williamsburg – in between the Screaming Females and gritty punk outfit For Science – was, like the Females’ (posted here), one of uncompromising quality.  It should be noted that Stevenson is not without her punk credentials, either.  Prior to going out on her own with the Cans, she was best known as keyboardist for the Long Island punk collective Bomb the Music Industry!, who will be her tourmates for the next few months along with the Felice Brothers, Screaming Females, and others.  Her band’s own music is more of the confessional, folk-influenced  singer-songwriter variety, and Stevenson executes her vision with a clarity and poise the reminds me of many of the things that have impressed us about other rising songwriters like Sharon Van Etten.  Along with songs from her first two records, including last year’s Sit Resist, Stevenson played several new numbers that portend a strong third album in her future.  Playing before a weekend punk crowd is hardly an easy task for any musician, but Stevenson did a fairly easy job of winning this crowd over.  At age 27, it might not be accurate to say Stevenson is a punk who has “grown up” – but perhaps it’s fair to say hers is grown-up music that punks can appreciate.

We recorded this set in the same manner as the Screaming Females recording, and it is a similarly nicely-balanced recording.  Enjoy!

I suppose one could fairly accuse this site of not featuring enough heavy music.  There are several reasons for that, not least being that a lot of “metal” bands aren’t into being recorded.  But here’s to hoping that changes, especially since Brooklyn has had a vibrant metal scene going for quite awhile now, as chronicled by BrooklynVegan among few “indie” sites that acknowledge metal even exists.  Naam are one of the first bands that made me realize such a gap existed in our coverage, when I saw them open for Om a few years ago.  Naam absolutely slayed then, and they have only gotten better since, combining bad-ass guitar chops with a psychedelic sensibility that makes them a crossover beyond only dedicated headbangers.  This show at Music Hall of Williamsburg found the band opening again, this time for stoner metal mavens Monster Magnet.  The amps and stacks were cranked this evening, and Naam made the most of them over a series of four blistering tracks, including two from their eponymous debut on TeePee Records.  I admit, I was also hoping to hear “Drain You” or “Pennyroyal Tea”, both of which appear on their Nirvana Covers 7″ – but maybe next time.  I hope this is but one of many heav(ier) shows I cover in the fine year of 2012!

JFCB and I recorded this set with tiny DPA 4061 microphones that captured the full range of the band’s sonic assault.  The recording is dense, upfront and excellent. Enjoy!  Note: any setlist help would be appreciated!
