Sir Richard Bishop: January 16, 2018 Union Pool

January 30, 2018
By

Though it would seem off-brand for Sir Richard Bishop to ever release a covers record, he’s developing quite the repertoire. Last year at Park Church Co-op, he did a beautiful version of “Till There Was You,” putting his own spin the Beatles classic. A couple weeks back at Union Pool, Bishop digs a little deeper with two surprising covers: the first is a faithful rendition of Gordon Lightfoot’s 1970 hit “If You Could Read My Mind,” which has been covered by everyone, including Johnny Cash. You’ll find Bishop doing a pretty good Gordon Lightfoot impression here—and if you think you don’t know this just listen and I’m sure it’ll sound pretty familiar. The second is a cover of the Michael Nesmith-penned Monkees tune, “Tapioca Tundra.” Again, the title might not be familiar out of context, but once you hear it you’ll know the song. Beyond the covers Bishop plays a few tunes we’re used to seeing him play live like “Mystic Minor 23,” “Safe House,” and the Sun City Girls songs “Abydos” and “Radio Morocco.” For the finale, he plays “Space Prophet Dogon” into an exciting return to “Zurvan.”

I recorded this from our usual spot with MBHOs combined with a board feed courtesy of FOH Doug. The sound is terrific. Enjoy!

Kid Millions – Jim Sauter Duo: January 22, 2018 Trans-Pecos

January 26, 2018

The resurgence of the wonderfully eclectic Ridgewood Queens venue Trans-Pecos saw the return of old favorite Kid Millions on Monday, this time paired with semi-regular collaborator saxophonist Jim Sauter. However, to call Sauter a “saxophone player” is to very poorly describe what it is exactly that he does. Sauter plays his horn through an amp preceded by a bank of pedals and the result is a sound that sometimes more resembles a guitar than a sax. For the larger than expected Monday night crowd, the Duo performed a short-ish set that was long on intensity. The Duo have collaborated for more than five years and have released two studio albums, Boanerges in 2012 (Doubt Music) and Fountain (Family Vineyard), and a recent 7″ on Feeding Tube Records. So that while the two only play together every few months, they remain entirely in sync and have that unspoken musical language not uncommon among extraordinarily skilled players.

This set was recorded from the Pecos board by FOH Eric who stereo panned the performers for a nice balanced mix. This recording is quite superb. Enjoy!

Gunn-Truscinski Duo: January 9, 2018 Union Pool

Until the surprise announcement of Bay Head from Gunn-Truscinski Duo last year, it seemed like these guys may never put out another record together. Their last platter, Ocean Parkway, was released back in 2012 and besides a very special gig for the Three Lobed Sweet Sixteen, the pair had been awfully quiet for a long time. Fortunately for us Bay Head picks up right where they left off, proving that when Steve Gunn and John Truscinski get a room together, it’s a rare magic that results. And speaking of rare, the duo aren’t doing many shows together in support of the record, but we were lucky enough to capture this set from Union Pool last week. Old classics “Bahn Mi Ringtones” and “Ocean Parkway” brought back memories of Zebulon gigs past, while new songs “Sugar,” “Seagulls for Chuck Berry,” and “Gunter” were captivatingly fresh.

If you’re in LA, be sure to grab tickets for their show with Body/Head.

And if you’re in Brooklyn, Union Pool has another free show scheduled for this Tuesday, Jan. 16, with the inimitable Sir Richard Bishop headlining.

I recorded this from our usual spot with MBHOs combined with a board feed courtesy of FOH Doug. The sound is terrific. Enjoy!

We had such a good time at the “Baker’s Dozen” shows this Summer at Madison Square Garden, so that when a taper’s ticket for the first night of the Phish four-show New Year’s run became available, I jumped at the chance to relive recent glory. Phish v3.0 is in a good place right now. They didn’t play as many shows in 2017 as in recent years, but what they did was quite memorable. The band themselves also seem to be personally doing well — clean and sober and enjoying each other’s company.

The first night of previous New Year’s runs of shows has been jokingly criticized as the “practice” night, a show used to work out the kinks and get back into the groove. But the current version of Phish isn’t playing by the old rules and this debut night was strong and confident from the outset. The band also is unencumbered by the mandate of playing different songs on every night of thirteen shows, so that the setlist was chock full of prime material. The abundant first set highlights included a solid “Wolfman’s Brother”, and extended “Roggae” and a peak version of “Back on the Train”. The second set started with the familiar, but the highlight of the set and perhaps the entire show was the twenty-four minute “No Men” which worked through a series of often melodic and thematic jams so that the extended length didn’t drag or seem indulgent. This was just the v3.0 of Phish playing to its strengths and operating on all cylinders. Far from “practice”, this night was a year-long highlight show and quite a cap to a perfect year for our experiences with Phish.

Thanks to Noah for the ticket and Walt for the clamp space!

I recorded this set from the first row of the taper’s section on the right side. Due to our fortunate position next to the great Charlie Miller, we were able on this night to maneuver the stand onto a raised platform in the center area, and that advantageous position helped this recording to achieve its maximum potential. Its perhaps our best capture of this year’s MSG shows. Enjoy!

Pile: December 9, 2017 Market Hotel

[photos by Stephanie Ronquillo – full set at her Flickr and Instragram]

Pile is one of those bands who you thought was your little secret and suddenly there are 500 people at their show. There’s something to be said for a band that grows its fanbase steadily and organically through consistently solid shows and records. Pile has existed for more than ten years and since signing to the most excellent Exploding In Sound Records in 2011, the trend has continued upward. The last couple of years have been remarkable. We saw them in 2015 at SXSW before a modest crowd and then later 2015 before a couple of hundred at Baby’s All Right. Earlier this year, we captured their sold out show at Sunnyvale. But a couple of weeks ago Pile sold out five-hundred strong at Market Hotel.

Buoyed by the band’s most recent album, the superb A Hairshirt of Purpose, Pile has finally and deservedly arrived. The Market Hotel offers a nice companion to the Pile experience, both are authentically DIY. The packed-in fans responded in kind, singing along to all of the lyrics showing true appreciation for the older obscure numbers that the band whipped out late in the set. The setlist for this show was heavy on Hairshirt material, but also delved into their self-released 2011 7″ (“Scissors”), “Pigeon Song” from the Boston Hassle compilation, and a couple of songs from the early Dripping album. We expect to see Pile again as often as possible, and hopefully at Market Hotel in the Spring or Summer.

This recording was captured by FOH Harrison utilizing the internal USB drive recording device on the Market Hotel’s Behringer X32 Soundboard. For a straight board feed from a smallish room, this recording is quite well balanced other than somewhat more prominent vocals. Enjoy!
