NYCTaper Presents: Chris Forsyth and The Solar Motel Band + Herbcraft – Tomorrow Night (Saturday) at Trans Pecos

Over the last two years Chris Forsyth and The Solar Motel Band has become one of the favorite bands of the NYCTaper crew. The band has also been one of our go-to performers when it comes to taping — in slightly over two years, there are now seven SMB recordings on the site from a variety of our favorite venues (all available here). Listening to the music, its easy to see why the band is attractive to us. They combine many of the elements and influences that we favor, including psych-rock, space rock and a healthy dose of the innate ability to improvise and elevate the music to a higher plain. Its a rare ability and one that’s hard to describe but easy to recognize when you see it and hear it. Chris Forsyth and The Solar Motel Band have that “X” factor that must be seen live to be truly understood.

Of all of the local venues where we’ve experienced SMB, it was the most glaring omission that the band had not previously performed at the City’s premiere location for music that transcends genres and easy descriptions, Trans Pecos. We are so pleased to be able to present SMB at Pecos. It seems like such a natural pairing and we expect that the venue’s vibe will fit perfectly with the band’s live show.

Chris Forsyth and The Solar Motel Band will release their new album The Rarity of Experience in March and No Quarter Records released a teaser for the record today. We expect to see some of that new material at tomorrow’s show. Here is the teaser:

When it came to the invitation for the support act for this special night, we were certain that the band needed to be someone who shared a musical kinship with Forsyth. We harkened back to a very memorable experience acidjack had at Mercury Lounge in early 2014, a “heady” night that made such a mark that the show made our “Best Of” list for entire year of 2014. The band was Herbcraft, and although we have not seen them since that night, the music was really quite a perfect fit for this show. Herbcraft have released an even spacier album in August of 2015 called Wot Oz (with our friends Woodist) and we are very much looking forward to seeing the new material live.

Futurebirds: November 12, 2015 Bowery Ballroom

It’s been a satisfying few years for the Futurebirds, as we’ve watched them grow from Union Pool headliner to solid opening band to second stage at Mountain Jam to 2013 at the Bowery Ballroom. This show at the latter venue found the band doubling down on their strengths, as they jammed out their signature brand of country-inflected, booze-friendly Americana in front of an audience who knew and appreciated what they were in for. As their popularity has grown, the Futurebirds haven’t made the mistake that some bands do of overcomplicating things; if you listen to 2015’s Hotel Parties, you’ll find a good bit of stylistic and subject matter similarity with Hampton’s Lullaby, the six-year-old album that started it all. Perhaps that’s part of why, in an age where most bands are lucky to get an approving corporate blog mention or two, the Futurebirds have an entire fansite dedicated to them, and going to their shows has even become a verb (“birding”).

What has grown since the first time we saw the band in 2011 is their level of confidence, earned through that same relentless touring that’s responsible for the loyal fan base. This show found them the most comfortable and in control as we’ve seen them yet, as they ripped through new songs “twentyseven” and early number (an inspired, extended run through “Ski Chalet” alike. Futurebirds are a band that’s able to both bring the party and keep things musically in their lane, and based on this evening, we expect their success to continue.

These are the moments that Trans-Pecos was meant for: daring performances by a crew of avant-garde artists, coming together at the night’s endpoint for a brave and spectacular jam. If you’re not familiar with these players, Tom Carter has appeared on this site several times. The experimental guitarist and co-founder of the band Charalambides continued his long tradition of exceptional work with this year’s Long Time Underground, released earlier this year by Three Lobed Recordings. Carter Thornton, who I hadn’t had the pleasure of seeing before, is a “guitarist” of a sort, but also a builder of instruments and master manipulator of electronic sounds. He’s appeared with a number of well-know underground acts, including fellow Three Lobed alums Enos Slaughter and Gnaw, a doom metal supergroup of sorts. And Chris Corsano — who we saw all over the place during the 2012 Hopscotch Music Festival as its “resident improviser” — is a drum innovator who turns most people’s conception of that instrument on its head.

This night featured each of the three players performing a solo set, with Thornton followed by Carter and then Corsano. Thornton played two new compositions, “Right Turn on Green” and “Who Shot JR” followed by Carter performing a new short improv and two Long Time Underground tracks. Corsano’s improvisation was, as expected, an otherworldly experience, but even that had to take a back seat to the first-time-ever trio performance that followed, when the group combined to create a dense composition featuring electronic sounds, guitars and Corsano’s drumming, which the group is calling “Twelve-Five.” This is something that’ll reward repeat listens, as the careful listener can pick out the roles each of the artists is filling at different times during the performance. We are thrilled to share all of these unique pieces of music.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK4V microphones at the stage lip, mixed at certain times with the soundboard feed to bolster the electronic sound. The sound quality is outstanding. Enjoy!

New Pope: November 21, 2015 Trans Pecos + Secret Project Robot (Two Shows!)

After guitarist and vocalist Clara Hunter Latham of the Brooklyn band Starring moved to the same small Massachusetts town as Oneida’s Bobby Matador, it was inevitable that the two would get together and play some music. The band New Pope has evolved from that relationship and two weeks back the band made the trip south and played their first ever shows in NYC, an afternoon show at Trans Pecos opening for Fox Millions Duo (recording here) and later at the Oneida potluck show at Secret Project Robot (recording here). At Pecos, the band was a four-piece accompanied by a second keyboard and violin and performed a thirty-five minute set consisting of four songs. The first three tracks are key-based psych but the fourth song has Clara’s guitar out front in an almost surf-rock style. For the late show at SPR, New Pope was joined by Kid Millions on drums and the set took on a different feel — more driving and less spacey. Both sets prove that New Pope is a band with great personnel and great potential and we hope that they make more trips to NYC in the future.

I recorded the Pecos set with the Schoeps mounted in front of the stage and mixed with a board feed of primarily vocals. Eric recorded the SPR set with the AKGs in front of the board and mixed with a board feed. Both sets sound quite excellent. Enjoy!

Superchunk: December 3, 2015 Baby’s All Right

Superchunk spawned one of the most revered independent labels, revitalized the music scene of two entire towns, and continue to inspire men and women alike to pogo at the stage lip singing every word. Few bands can claim those achievements, but even fewer can claim to have not only kept, but expanded their fans’ loyalty since the early 1990s. Mac McCaughan may well be one of his generation’s few ageless indie stars, as unabashedly confessional, athletic and compelling onstage as he was when he was in his twenties. What separates his songs from those of lesser peers is that those lyrics aren’t just reflections of youthful naiveté — they just say what they need to in the most direct, compelling way. It hurts none that behind Mac is a crack band (sans, sadly, Laura Ballance these days) that has only gotten better over the years; if many drummers are hitting the kit better than Jon Wurster at any age, they ought to count themselves lucky. And that doesn’t even begin to touch the humor of Jim Wilbur (who’s a pretty darn good player, too).

The band came into Baby’s All Right on this Thursday to follow up a performance the night before at Ground Control Touring’s 15th Anniversary, meaning they weren’t here to flog a new record or for any purpose other than to remind their fans exactly why they stick around. They rewarded us with a set that drew from all over their catalog, treating 2013’s I Hate Music and their 1990s canon with equal reverence. The sold out crowd gave as good as they got in terms of energy, as the people in the front didn’t stop moving, or singing, the entire time. The band may have joked before “The Popular Music” (from Indoor Living, 1997) about how they would sit around in front of a Britney Spears poster in their practice room and wonder if a new song they were writing would “make them popular” (Mac’s reply — it didn’t) but the reality is that, in the longer run, their efforts worked. Sometimes it’s quality, and not quantity of “popularity” that counts, and Superchunk has the former in abundance. For a certain group of people, Superchunk were a foundational band, in the same way other giants of the era like Pavement (or further toward the mainstream, Nirvana) inspired countless stints as independent radio DJs, memberships in variously-successful bands, and LP/CD collections that burden many of us to this day. In 2013, we called them “the best working band in America today,” and noted that they “don’t have a bad song in their catalog,” and those sentiments remain true to this day.

To be honest, I’m not really sure if they haven’t played the first encore, “The Breadman” single in more than 20 years as claimed, but I’m not going to be that guy who disputes the band on the Internet (according to said Internet, this was only the second time it’s ever been played). I will say that “Hyper Enough,” still rings true — rocking this night with an energy that belied its twenty years in the rotation, and a song whose central premise still rings true of Mac now as when he wrote it. And “Throwing Things,” which closed the first encore, well, it was as compelling as it was when it first appeared on No Pocky for Kitty in 1991. True to their nature, the band came out for a second encore, and closed with “Slack Motherfucker.” Balance wrote the song back in 1990 and, whoever it was addressed to at the time, Mac has proven to be anything but.

Car Seat Headrest: October 15, 2015 NYCTaper Unofficial CMJ Show, Cake Shop

Twenty-two year old Will Toledo, who performs as Car Seat Headrest, is one of those songwriters whose skill actually matches his high level of output and obvious ambition. That’s a clear reason how, at a young age, and after already writing, performing and producing eleven albums (!!!) on his own on bandcamp, he’s found himself signed to Matador Records, where he’s about to release Teens of Style. Lest you dump this music in the category of mumbly lo-fi bedroom recordings that we’ve all seen a hundred times before, I’d point you to the very first song of this set at our NYCTaper Unofficial CMJ Show, “The Ending of Dramamine,” which was fourteen minutes of off-kilter pop-inflected rock reminiscent of bands like Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, the Cars and R.E.M. Or there’s how Toledo, prior to his affiliation with a “big time” label, had already sold 25,000 copies of those bandcamp-only releases. Oh, and those earlier efforts weren’t made in a bedroom — the story goes that the only place Toledo could find peace and quiet to record was the family car, hence the band name.

Toledo’s songs are lyrically dense, at times funny, at times teenage-confessional, unflinchingly honest. We were excited that Matador offered us the chance to have this artist close our show, because Teens of Style has already appeared on many best-of lists since its October 30 release. All of these songs appeared in some form prior to Teens of Style, but expect to hear brand-new versions of the last three — “Times To Die,” “Something Soon” and “Oh! Starving” — on that record. In the meantime, enjoy these right-on live performances, and expect much more to come, including a show on December 5 at Baby’s All Right.
