The Mekons: October 9, 2011 City Winery – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

The Mekons played two local shows this past week, and while we were not able to attend either (as we did in 2007 and again in 2009), friend of the site and occasional contributor neild was in the house.
He reports:

“To say that a Mekons performance is an odd one would seem to be redundant: For a band that has donned cowboy shirts and performed Hank Williams covers for 1980s punk crowds, collaborated with Kathy Acker on an album about lesbian pirates and Vito Acconci on a performance piece that involved playing one song for 45 minutes behind movable curtains, and recorded songs from their own show-in-progress on a cassette recorder and auctioned them off to audience members as “MeTunes,” odd is pretty much expected.

That said, this was an odd Mekons show. First off, it was at City Winery, where the upscale decor made for an unusual setting for a bunch of art-punk veterans. (They’d played a more traditional show at Brooklyn’s Bell House the night before, as part of a one-week US tour in support of their new record Ancient & Modern: 1911-2011) Secondly, this was billed as an “acoustic” show, though it would have been more accurately termed “sit-down”: All eight Mekons (vocalist/guitarist/lead quipster Jon Langford, vocalist/foil Sally Timms, vocalist/accordionist Rico Bell, bassist Sarah Corina, vocalist/guitarist Tom Greenhalgh, drummer Steve Goulding, violinist Susie Honeyman, and vocalist/saz player Lu Edmonds) were arrayed across the stage in chairs – Goulding sat on a cajon drum box in place of his standard kit – with one member or another occasionally arising to take the center stage mic.

Finally, Ancient & Modern is an odd record even by Mekons standards. The theme is Edwardian England during the run-up to the First World War, a time of accelerated technological achievements, concentrations of wealth, war, and terrorism concerns. (Two songs on the new album, “Space In Your Face” and “Arthur’s Angel,” [streaming below] name-check the 1910 bombing of the L.A. Times building and the World War I Angels of Mons legend, respectively — look ’em up on Wikipedia if you’ve never heard of them.) The music, meanwhile, runs the gamut of Mekons genres, from straight-ahead three-chord rock (“Space In Your Face”) to spare old-timey piano ballads (“I Fall Asleep”) to one song, “Geeshie,” that was apparently inspired by an obscure 1930s Geeshie Wiley record and then took off in a Mekonesque direction.

For the longtime Mekons fans in the crowd, the highlight of the evening was the return of band co-founder Greenhalgh to the US for the first time in four years. Greenhalgh sported a very Edwardian moustache and a tan suit that made him look as if he should be sipping sherry at the Explorer’s Club. As for the show, the “acoustic” setting didn’t much change either the song selection or the volume levels: Moments of pure wall-of-noise multi-throated sing-alongs (“Hard to Be Human,” “Curse of the Mekons”) alternated with aching beauty (the Timms-sung live rarities “Waltz” and “Learning to Live On Your Own” in particular), and were interspersed with the usual Mekons banter that has at times made them almost as appealing as an improv comedy act as a rock band.

The show was recorded with Core-Sound binaural mics on an iRiver 320 outfitted with Rockbox and a Microphone Madness battery box with bass rolloff applied. The recorder was right in the thick of the crowd, just left of center about 25 feet back from the crowd, so you’ll hear the occasional audience comments – but then, that’s only appropriate for a Mekons show, too.”

Pierce Turner: St. Patrick’s Day at Joe’s Pub + City Winery Gig with Philip Glass

January 8, 2009
By

Last year, Ireland’s premiere “celtic soul” singer-songwriter Pierce Turner performed his St. Patrick’s Day show at the authentic pub Puck Fair — and the size of the crowd was pressed against the walls in complete capacity. This year, the ever-popular show will be moved to Joe’s Pub where ticket sales will guarantee a limited entrance. Pierce is warning fans to buy early because this show will most certainly sell out, as many of his prior non-holiday Joe’s Pub shows have done. If the 7 p.m. show is indeed sold out, there is an open slot at 9 p.m. to add a late show, so all hope is not lost.

This is not yet formally announced, but Pierce Turner will also appear as a pianist at a special event at City Winery on April 5, 2009 as part of Philip Glass‘s ongoing series of performances at that new venue. A bit of trivia — the piano that sits in Pierce’s living room in his NYC home was a gift from Philip Glass upon the completion of Turner’s solo debut It’s Only A Long Way Across, which was produced by Glass. At this point, City Winery has only announced that Suzanne Vega will also perform at this event, but expect Turner to be added soon.

the Mountain Goats: November 12, 2017 Brooklyn Steel

All the stars aligned for this Sunday night return to NYC for the Mountain Goats. On tour in support of their newest release, the excellent Goths (Merge Records) album, the band played their first local shows in over a year and a half. Those legendary 2015 and 2016 City Winery shows saw the Mountain Goats in an intimate setting, but at Brooklyn Steel this weekend the large room afforded the band the opportunity to stretch out. As they took the stage to the dramatic Vivaldi concerto, the Mountain Goats were greeted warmly by the packed room. This was a night when the fans played a truly complimentary role to the music — hushed during the quiet moments and raucous when required, but attentive throughout. There was no idle chatter and virtually none of the persistent shouted requests that sometimes annoy at Mountain Goats shows. Ultimately, the audience was rewarded with a lengthy show featuring stellar performances, a few rare nuggets, and two shout-outs to the crowd from John Darnielle later in the evening.

Goths is essentially a tribute to that early 80s British scene which included Siouxsie, Nick Cave, Peter Murphy/Bauhaus, and Andrew Eldritch/Sisters of Mercy. As with any subject of a Mountain Goats album, the songs are both tributes and explications of the melancholy and loneliness of the lifestyle. “Andrew Eldritch Is Moving Back to Leeds” finds the singer leaving the goth life in Germany and returning with little or no fanfare to the upper Midlands town where the band began. For this particular show “Eldritch” was preceded by the debut of a cover of the Sisters Of Mercy’s 1989 single “Lucretia My Reflection”, performed to perfection in large part because the band’s stage assistant had enough foresight to print and laminate the lyrics in advance. It was that kind of night, as seemingly everything the band did turned out right. John’s three-song solo set featured an infrequent appearance of “Autoclave”, and an exceedingly rare unreleased “Poltergeist”, before the band returned for a powerful second half of the show. The show’s finale was a return of “The Best Ever Death Metal Band in Denton”, a fun song that I haven’t seen in a few years and which always gets the crowd involved. Sunday night’s show at Brooklyn Steel represented all of the reasons why we keep coming back to see this band, and probably always will.

I recorded this set with the Neumann hypers mounted high inside the soundboard cage and mixed with the a feed provided by the Mountain Goats longtime FOH Brandon Eggleston. Both the room and the feed provided superbly balanced sound, so that this recording is truly a remarkable capture. Enjoy!

Mountain Goats New Haven 2

The Mountain Goats‘ current tour is called the “Brine Crypt Exodus” and it was inspired by a very special night last April when the band played a show at City Winery with a pared-down stage show. While not quite “unplugged”, the set stripped down the Mountain Goats to the basics and the result was an incredible inspired set that we were very fortunate to have captured.

The second night of the tour reached New Haven Connecticut on Saturday night in a fairly large theater in the center of town. The College Street Music Hall sits about a half block from the south border of the campus of Yale University and its in the “theater district” — indeed the location was not even a rock venue until May of 2015. The result of the recent upgrade of the facility is that the hall is outfitted with a customized state of the art sound system and prime seating configurations that compliment the acoustics and classic charm of the vintage theater. We agree with the person on our twitter feed that College Street is one of the best locations in the tri-state area to experience a concert.

With that backdrop and with the opening night of the tour (Woodstock) under their belts, the Mountain Goats began this show inspired and fully in sync with each other. The band is currently a quartet and each member shined throughout this night. The addition of multi-instrumentalist Matt Douglas permits the band to add keys, horns or an extra guitar to fortify the sound. Jon Wurster on drums and Peter Hughes on bass are simply one of the best rhythm sections around these days. Since this tour is technically not in support of any new release, the Mountain Goats also felt unfettered when it came to song selection. As a result, the setlist was culled from the deep recesses of the back catalog and we saw songs we’d never experienced before in our two dozen Mountain Goats shows.

The Mountain Goats will return to NYC later this month for three shows at the City Winery, where they played to great success last year. The shows are all sold-out but if by chance a ticket falls your way, don’t miss these nights.

I recorded this set with the Schoeps cards mounted inside of the soundboard area and blended that capture with a soundboard feed mixed expertly by long-time touring FOH Brandon Eggleston. The sound quality is superb. Enjoy!

This is a rejuvenation of the lists we used to do in the early days of the site. I’m trying to get every year up in this category, so this is a look back four years at 2011. The following year (2012) will be available soon, and 2015 will go up in January. That will complete a full listing of the entire NYCTaper archives and make available every recording in our history only two clicks away. Again, don’t take this as an invitation to download massive quantities of recordings. If I find someone downloading 10 or 20 shows at once, I’ll block your IP address.
