Mothers Palisades

Its a beautiful thing to watch the deserved ascent of a high quality band. Mothers began as the solo project of Kristine Leschper before the full band formed about eighteen months ago. The addition of three superb musicians has elevated Mothers to entirely new level. When the band played the NYCTaper CMJ show in October at Cake Shop, the capacity crowd seemed to recognize that they witnessed something special — it was the best received set of the day and perhaps my favorite performance of the entire show. In the intervening three months the band’s status has grown further, so as a result Friday night’s show at Palisades was absolutely packed. This was the largest crowd we’ve seen at the venue, as it was difficult to even navigate from our taping position upfront to the back of the venue during the night. Kristine did in fact acknowledge the special nature of the evening, and indeed it also happened to be her birthday. The band itself has grown tighter musically, as lead guitarist Drew Kirby, bassist Patrick Morales and drummer Matt Anderegg (from the Athens GA musical collective Marching Banana) are clearly in sync with Leschper’s unique melodies and advanced sense of tempo.

But the remarkable aspect about the size and the energy of the Palisades crowd is the fact that Mothers has not even yet released their debut album. When You Walk A Long Distance You Are Tired (Grand Jury Music) will be released on February 26, and this set featured four songs from the album. The show also featured one unreleased song that the band has been playing since last year (“Fat Chance”) and an entirely new untitled song. Mother’s will be touring extensively over the next few months, including a trip to London and dates at SXSW, and they will ultimately return to NYC in late April.

However, NYC is fortunate that Mothers hasn’t left town yet. The band has a show tonight Monday Feb 1 at Berlin in the East Village.

We recorded this set with acidjack’s Schoeps open cardioid mics mounted at the front and center of the stage lip and mixed with a board feed provided by house FOH Ariel. The sound quality is superb, enjoy!

Lawrence: December 5, 2015 Mercury Lounge

Lawrence the band is co-led by a brother and sister duo, Clyde Lawrence and Gracie Lawrence. In a true display of the idea that talent is genetic, both Lawrence siblings have been accomplished performers for the majority of their short lives. Clyde Lawrence is on record as the youngest member ever of the Songwriters Guild (SGA), having written a song for a major motion picture at the ripe age of six. Clyde continued to write songs for movies throughout his teens and indeed wrote the complete score for the 2014 film The Rewrite, starring Hugh Grant and Marisa Tomei. Gracie Lawrence has been in several movies and indeed appeared on Broadway in Brighton Beach Memoirs. She has pages on the Playbill Vault, Wikipedia and IMDb and she is only eighteen years old.

At Mercury Lounge in December, the band previewed much of their upcoming debut album. The record was produced by Eric Krasno of Soulive and is expected to be released in February. Lawrence is going on tour throughout February (dates here), which culminates in the record release show at Webster Hall’s Marlin Room on February 18.

I recorded this set in our usual manner at Mercury — Schoeps on a stand at the board and mixed with an excellent feed provided by house FOH Alex. The crowd was a bit boisterous on this late weekend night but overall it just adds some authenticity to the recording, which otherwise sounds quite excellent. Enjoy!

Baby Birds Don’t Drink Milk: January 9, 2016 Palisades

January 19, 2016

Odd name aside, the band called Baby Birds Don’t Drink Milk is really just a bunch of regular guys playing some compelling drone-ish electric folk. The band is originally from Lawrence Kansas and has existed for ten years (minus a bit of a hiatus). This year finds a new release, a full length due in March called Burritos (Fire Talk Records). But for this Palisades show opening for Oneida, the band concentrated mostly on last year’s “mini-LP” release Kill The Fuzz with four of the six songs performed culled from that 2015 release. The thirty-five minute set offered a bunch of different looks at Baby Birds, including the quiet intro, some noisy segments, some folk harmonies and ultimately a little bit of psych. There was even a little drum solo. But the takeaway is that this band is very easy to like, and they will be showing up on these pages in the future.

Eric recorded this set with the AKGs mounted on a stand at the front of the stage. I mixed that with the fine soundboard recording and the results are quite excellent. Enjoy!

NYCTaper Presents: Wussy at Trans-Pecos – March 30, 2016

Wussy in Cincinnati

On more than one occasion, Robert Christgau has called Wussy “the best band in America“. As the readers of this site know, we don’t disagree. We’ve covered Wussy’s trips to NYC seven times over the last five-plus years. In March, Wussy releases their 6th proper album called Forever Sounds to be released in the US on Shake It and in the UK on Damnably.

We are so pleased to be able to bring Wussy back to NYC for a show at Trans-Pecos on Wednesday March 30. We’ve also selected the support for this show, Courtesy Tier, who were so impressive when we saw their CD release show back in November at Rough Trade.

Market Hotel Announces First New Calendar in 5 Years

January 12, 2016

If the format of this calendar announcement gives you some strange feeling of deja vu, its because that while things change sometimes they really do stay the same. The re-opening of the Market Hotel as a licensed venue that somehow also manages to maintain the charm of its original incarnation is the thing of dreams — Todd Patrick’s dream in particular. That Todd somehow managed to pull off this miraculous comeback is also the thing of legends. The calendar listed below has Todd’s unique layout and while it gives us a true feeling of looking back, the bills themselves are only looking forward. The outstanding show promoter AdHoc is producing the largest percentage of shows on this debut calendar, and their input is crucial. The Market promises to be exactly everything that ToddP’s illustrious career as the premiere NYC showmaker of the last fifteen years has been leading to. With the Market now opening and Trans-Pecos going strong, its full steam ahead and we can’t wait for the ride.

Cass McCombs: January 7, 2016 Bowery Ballroom

January 11, 2016

The timing was excellent. My first show of the new year took place at the legendary Bowery Ballroom and featured one of my favorite artists. And did Cass McCombs ever deliver. We’ve seen Cass perform intense shows, fun shows, and even split shows with the Meat Puppets. But what Cass and his band did on Thursday night was one for the ages — an over two-hour epic night that featured a nice cross-section of material from his healthy catalog. Ostensibly Cass is on tour in support of his new album A Folk Set Apart: Rarities, B-Sides & Space Junk, Etc., which as its title makes clear, is a compilation. But the band only played a couple of songs from the new album, instead treating us to some inspired versions of older Cass material. Of note were the last two songs played — a huge thirteen-minute version of “County Line” and the finale, a fourteen minute take on “Dreams Come True Girl”, which also included a dual drum solo. The band this time out included the addition of two drummers (Jesse Lee and Ryan Sawyer) to replace Joe Russo (currently on tour with JRAD), and Cass regulars Dan Iead on guitar and Jon Shaw on bass. With several years together, the unit was both tight when necessary and also capable of letting loose for extended segments (see above) which ultimately provided us with a lengthy show that literally never lagged and was chock full of highlights.

I recorded this set from our usual location in this venue and the sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

We’ve followed Holly Miranda for more than the last half decade, and she’s never let us down. Whether it was at the legendary Maxwells, headlining gig at Bowery, a private show at a wine bar, a night at Glasslands, or a show among friends at Zebulon, Holly Miranda has consistently delivered outstanding performances. Her latest record is a self-titled album that was recorded a couple of years ago after Holly moved to LA and parted ways with XL Recordings. As we noted in 2013, the new album and the artist would find a new home quickly and sure enough Dangerbird Records did just that. Last month at Bowery Ballroom, Holly brought together some old friends (including friend of the site Tim Mislock) and played a too brief support set which included much of the new album, a couple of older tracks and one sublime cover. As always, ultimately the set left us satisfied but wanting more. So, tomorrow night Holly Miranda will join forces with the excellent Hypnocraft and play a show at Manhattan Inn. Don’t miss it.

I recorded this set with the Schoeps cards mounted in our usual location in this venue. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

NYCTaper Upcoming Schedule: Winter/Spring 2016

Another Happy New Year to all of our faithful readers.  As we move into 2016 there will be some major changes at NYCTaper as we become involved in the minority ownership of a renewed venue, the Market Hotel.  We can continue to promise the same degree of archival work, but with an added extra — we’ll be documenting as much as we can from one particular venue which may also come to include regular streaming of shows.  Its an exciting time here and a ride upon which we hope you’ll join us!

Caveat: Below is the updated schedule. We expect to attend and record these events. However, circumstances will prevent some of these from being done, and others will be added in the meantime. Feel free to make suggestions or point out shows we missed or invite us to your shows!

This is a rejuvenation of the lists we used to do in the early days of the site. I’m trying to get every year up in this category, and when 2015 goes up in January it will complete a full listing of the entire NYCTaper archives and make available every recording in our history only two clicks away. Again, don’t take this as an invitation to download massive quantities of recordings. If I find someone downloading 10 or 20 shows at once, I’ll block your IP address.
