Wooden Shjips: May 22, 2019 Brooklyn Bowl

May 24, 2019
By

We here at nyctaper are fans of all things Ripley Johnson. Of late, that’s meant attending the shows of his excellent project Moon Duo, who’ve graced us here in NYC several times in the past few years. But as for his larger vehicle Wooden Shjips, it’s been since 2012 that we’ve caught a live show by the band.

I’m happy to say that drought has now ended, with a show worthy of the wait. Ripley and his bandmates rolled into Brooklyn Bowl with purpose and a light show that almost made you forget you were in a bowling alley. This set spanned the band’s entire career, including their most accessible album to date, V. Two of that album’s strongest songs, “Ride On” and “Staring at the Sun,” provided a mellow tempo downshift in the middle of a set that was largely a burner, including the very-early album track “Death’s Not Your Friend” into a Ripley-fied version of the VU’s “What Goes On” to close out the main set. Not to be ignored, too, is the band’s cover of New Zealand psych lords Snapper’s “Buddy,” which we’d last seen them play in 2011.

Ripley has another important piece of news today: It’s the release date of his latest project, Rose City Band, the name a nod to his current hometown of Portland. Hopefully we’ll be seeing them around these parts before too long — and it’ll be a shorter distance between our next cruise with the Shjips.

I recorded this set with MBHO microphones up front in the venue. The sound quality is excellent. Hope you dig it!

At this point in their career, Wooden Shjips have become a must-see concert for me. The quartet never fails to deliver a powerful and intense performance of their dense psychedelic rock. At Knitting Factory on Sunday night, the Shjips worked through a set similar to their previous NYC show at Music Hall last Fall, but the more intimate venue offered the opportunity to experience the show up close. While guitarist/vocalist Ripley Johnson is the obvious focal point, we were just as entranced by the rhythm section and their ability to rattle my ribcage with deep bottom end, and Nash’s authentic 60’s garage-style organ. The whole of the Shjips stage performance is a spectacle that is gratifying to experience, and we left Sunday night’s show hoping they will return to NYC soon. Wooden Shjips will spend much of July on tour in Europe.

I recorded this set with the Sennheiser MKH-8040 cards mixed with a superb soundboard feed and the sound quality is outstanding. Enjoy!

Wooden Shjips – November 10, 2011 Music Hall of Williamsburg – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

Last week in the underground Pink Floyd live music collector community, a recording surfaced for the first time in over 40 years. A 1967 performance of the original band with Syd Barrett in Stockholm was recorded by a local archivist and at long last reached collectors around the world. The proto-psychedelic music was groundbreaking in the mid-60s, but across four decades even this technologically-challenged recording is still fresh and exciting. The palpable energy of the songs and the ferocious nature of the improvisation is breathtaking. Its no wonder that generations removed the original brand of psychedelic rock, there are still any number of excellent purveyors of the craft today. On Thursday night at Music Hall of Williamsburg, we witnessed a performance of perhaps the most pure neo-psych band around, San Francisco’s Wooden Shjips. On tour to support their latest album West — the band’s first release on the excellent label Thrill Jockey Records — Wooden Shjips made one of their infrequent visits to NYC. We have been fortunate to have captured the previous two, 2009 at 171 Lombardy and 2010 at Music Hall. The set on Thursday continued on the same vein as the previous shows, with the band visiting much of their full catalog and stretching the numbers out with rich improvisation. While Ripley Johnson’s crunchy guitar is forefront of the mix, each member of the quartet shined on this particular evening. As an example, we’re streaming “Fallin'” below , which features the swirling psych organ of Nash Whalen for most of the song structure before Johnson shreds the last four minutes. The show concluded with a number from the band’s 2007 self-titled debut, “We Ask You To Ride” which was so loud that I could literally feel my knees vibrate when each bass note was stuck. I closed my eyes and for a second imagined that the 1967 Swedish crowd probably felt a similar physical rush from The Pink Floyd.

I recorded this set with the four microphone rig from the front center of the balcony. We’re still struggling to find the proper recording technique for this particular venue, but after some post-production and tasteful EQ, I feel that this recording can now be classified as an excellent listen. Enjoy!

Fresh off a killer set at ATP New York 2010, Wooden Shjips seemed like about the only ATP-goers who weren’t burned out by that intense weekend of music.  Headlining an excellent Sunday night bill to celebrate the third year anniversary of Music Hall of Williamsburg, the Shjip’s set of pulsing psychedelic rock reminded us both of our recent experience of guitarist Erik “Ripley” Johnson’s side project Moon Duo (albeit with a denser, even bigger sound) as well as the Shjips’ Halloween set that we covered last year.  This band specializes in a narcotic, intense West Coast-influenced sound, and they held most of this crowd in rapture for their one-hour set (even in spite of the $3 beers on offer).  Congratulations to the Music Hall for three years of epic music in Williamsburg!

I recorded this set from our usual spot in the venue with the Schoeps hypercardiod microphones.  The sound is excellent.  Enjoy!

Wooden Shjips: October 31, 2009 171 Lombardy – Flac and MP3 Downloads

November 3, 2009
By

If Wooden Shjips had until this weekend completely sailed under my radar, it could be explained by the fact that in their several years of existence, the San Francisco quartet had not played a proper NYC concert. On tour to support their latest release Dos, the band played a 92Y show on Friday, and headlined the Sacred Bones Records-curated and ToddP-produced show at 171 Lombardy on Halloween Saturday. At first blush, Wooden Shjips reminded me very much of the psychedelic acid rock of Black Mountain, but quickly veered towards a more trance and experimental take on the genre. The fuzzed guitars mixed equally with a Floydian organ are the centerpiece of the sound, and the tribal drums and chanted vocals are accompaniments. I was extremely impressed with Wooden Shjips and their too-brief forty minute set left us wanting more.

This set was recorded with the four-track R-44, and mixed two Neumann microphones set up at thirty feet with a stereo feed from the soundboard. Other than a brief segment of minor keyboard distortion in the early section of the first song, this is a fine recording. Enjoy!

Moon Duo: September 7, 2019 Hopscotch Music Festival (Raleigh, NC)

September 27, 2019
By

Not so long after catching an infrequent Wooden Shjips sighting at Brooklyn Bowl a few months back, we were lucky enough to see Ripley Johnson with his other (no less important) project Moon Duo close out the Hopscotch Music Festival in Raleigh, NC at our fave spot there, Kings.

Most exciting about this set was the fact that it comes just before the release of the band’s latest album, Stars Are the Light, a record that finds Sanae Yamada and Ripley wading further into the dance music arena. While you won’t find Moon Duo headlining a big EDM festival anytime soon, the vibe and texture of the new material has an airier lean to it. Yamada has cited disco as an inspiration for these songs, and you can hear it from the album’s title song as well as many of the new numbers that made their way into this night. If you’ve heard the second volume of Occult Architecture – billed the “light” side of that double album – then think of Stars Are the Light as the next logical evolution of that material. It’s a heck of a lot of fun to anytime, but it proved an especially fine coda to a multi-night music festival for me. Rounding out the new material, and the set, was a curveball cover, in this case Alan Vega’s “Jukebox Babe,” which the band released as a single last year.

Stars Are the Light hits the streets today, September 27, so do yourself a favor and head over to Sacred Bones Records or the band’s bandcamp to dig in.

I recorded this set with a soundboard feed, together with MBHO mics and the Aerco preamp for some warm goodness. Enjoy!

This is a rejuvenation of the lists we used to do in the early days of the site. I’m trying to get every year up in this category, so this is a look back four years at 2011. The following year (2012) will be available soon, and 2015 will go up in January. That will complete a full listing of the entire NYCTaper archives and make available every recording in our history only two clicks away. Again, don’t take this as an invitation to download massive quantities of recordings. If I find someone downloading 10 or 20 shows at once, I’ll block your IP address.

Moon Duo: March 10, 2015 Rough Trade NYC – FLAC/MP3/Streaming Full Set

Ripley Johnson and Sanae Yamada have been making music as Moon Duo for a while now, churning out consistent albums on Sacred Bones (and earlier, Woodsist) that have delighted both Wooden Shjips fans and those who were drawn to the more organ-driven sound led by Yamada. With Shadow of the Sun, and this latest tour, the band has swung a bit more to the rock side of the things, bringing on drummer John Jeffrey, who appeared on the Live in Ravenna album as well. If Shadow represents yet another refinement rather than a quantum leap, the addition of the live drumming is noticeable, and even more so in the actual concert space — compare this set, for example, with the set I recorded in 2010.

Fans of the Ravenna live set would agree that this set at Rough Trade NYC built on some of the good things you can see there, with the live drums adding viscosity and punch to the band’s hypnotic flow. The set consisted of just under half-Shadow of the Sun material. “Wilding” made for as good a kickoff for the live set as it did for the album, while “Thieves” gave Ripley an opportunity for a hardcore guitar freakout. The trio were barely visible most of the time, shrouded by an electric light show that matched the pace and vibe of the setlist. The seventy minutes ended on a high note, with an extended “Set It On Fire” that, by the time it ended, made you feel almost as if you’d woken from a dream. This band can do that to you.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK4V microphones mounted inside the soundboard cage, together with engineer Nick Cameron. The sound quality is outstanding. Enjoy!
